    PertSnergleman's Review:
    -------------------------------------------
    She did everything she could. Stayed in the same room, at the same hotel. Practiced at the same time, said hello to the faces she remembered from before. Monica Seles came to Melbourne three weeks ago looking to reshape time and fact, hoping to erase more than two years of doubt and fear and pain. The key was not to think too hard. Seles would walk the halls of the Flinders Park tennis complex and see photos of that teenager holding the championship trophy in '91, '92 or '93 and looking new and so happy. She would feel the truth like a mean wind, and not even winning again could change that. She is not that girl anymore.
    Seles's opponents are asking themselves the same question. Since Seles left the game in April 1993, after having been stabbed by Parche during a tournament in Germany, a new generation of talent has risen in women's tennis, secretly sure it had made the strides needed to handle Seles upon her return. As she accepted her trophy in front of 14,879 cheering fans crowding Centre Court, Seles thought of last year, when she had watched the final onTV. "It's just great to be back," Seles said, her quavering voice filling the stadium. "I still can't believe I'm here."
    But the fact is, Seles herself had no hopes of winning in Australia in the months following her return to tennis last August. Certainly her dramatic and draining loss to Graf in the U.S. Open final was a perfect jump start to the second half of her career, but then the machine seized up. Tendinitis in her left knee and torn ankle ligaments forced Seles to withdraw from one event after another. The lack of action, especially after such a build up, threw Seles for a loss. She found herself falling into the same state of depression that had consumed her during the winter after she was stabbed. "A lot of times, when I would be home, keeping to myself, I'd be very down and everything would start back again," Seles said a few days before the final.
    In early December, Seles became afflicted with recurring dizziness that left her barely able to leave bed. No one could tell her what was wrong. Seles consulted various doctors, visiting the Mayo Clinic twice. Her condition was diagnosed as meningitis, then as severe flu. Her treatment included iron tablets and vitamin supplements.
    "I thought maybe I was missing that part," Seles said after the final. "It meant a lot to know it's still there, to know that I could pull it out."
    At her post match press conference, Seles giggled over the win and spoke of her plans: the French Open again, the Olympics, perhaps a Wimbledon title at last. Someone asked about playing in Germany, and she grew angry and said it would be very hard to feel safe there. Someone asked again about Germany, and Seles said she didn't want to think about it and she stopped talking. She began to cry. She pulled her hat down over her eyes. One photographer's flash fired, and then they were all popping before her eyes like small bombs. "Don't take pictures of this," Seles said softly.
    Instead of racing out of the room, Seles tried to push through. She wiped her eyes and asked for another question, an effort she would not have been capable of six months ago. It was progress, however small. Finally Seles mumbled, "There's no point in continuing this," and hurried out. She sat down in a chair in the locker room and cried.
    The locker room door swings open, and here comes Seles, walking slowly down the gray hallway, surrounded by her friends, her mother, her handlers. Her father, Karolj, hugs her, and she begins to smile. She starts to make her way out of the stadium, sees tournament director Paul McNamee and his wife, Lesley, and their baby, Rowan, and stops to talk. Soon Seles is swinging Rowan in her arms, laughing and spinning around in a tight circle. One second the baby gurgles happily, the next he begins to squall. Seles spins around again.
    "You're happy one second, the next thing you're crying," she says in a singsong to the baby. He stares, he squirms. He doesn't understand a word she has said.

  • @roobookaroo
    @roobookaroo 4 года назад +14

    It is surprising that in her 2d book, GETTING A GRIP, Seles does not mention anything about those matches, not even the names of Chandra Rubin and Anke Huber, nor the excellent final 6-4, 6-1 score. Huber was exactly one year younger, and the same height. Inexplicably, Huber's name does not figure in that book nor its index.
    Still it's a great joy to see that Monica Seles can still produce here her precise shot-making and some of her brilliant cross-courts and wonderful down-the-line shots. Her game is still of the highest quality. Her legendary FOR-TEH grunt is as sonorous as ever. And the giggles of adolescence have not yet disappeared. She remains a charming player in looks, behavior and words, but she has also remained an intensely ferocious competitor. After all, she is only 22 here, with a good number of playing years lying ahead and waiting for her. But it is undeniable that she's lost her lean, wiry girlish figure and a bit of her former lively bounce and dancing on the baseline after a winner, and we can see her stomach pushing through her shirt. She said that she was more worried over her thighs visible to all under her tennis skirt.
    More specifically, Monica Seles has lost some of her agility, speed and mobility, especially laterally. She is a little less eager to run after some balls seemingly out of reach. And, if less visibly, she must have lost some of her overall fitness and athleticism from those 26 months of withdrawal from tournament play and binge eating. So on the whole, the spectacular talent is still there, but the fitness is no longer 100%. Monica Seles is not exactly the same player at the peak of her powers as she was pre-April 1993. And, in fact, it turned out that she never was able to recover that optimum, olympian state. The more than two years of a critical period of growth (19 to 22) she lost in inactivity and uncontrolled junk food addiction were irreplaceable. Although nobody could foresee it then, this 4th Australian Open win at age 22, her ninth Grand Slam, was also to be her very last one. Notice that her father, her best friend and adored coach, cannot contain his tears of sheer, overpowering emotion, not only of joy, but also relief at seeing his beloved daughter finally emerging from her funk and coming back to the full life of champions. He quickly hides his eyes behind dark glasses.
    So this match is, in a way, at age 22, the closing win of Monica Seles's brilliant Grand-Slam collecting career. The technique was still there, the fundamentals were good and survived, enough to allow her to keep enjoying playing the game at the highest professional level (ranking among the top ten) and holding her own against the best, if not any longer with the same kind of phenomenal success as in her teenage years. Here, at the awards ceremony in Melbourne in January 1996, Monica looks bursting with happiness, a very normal, still giggling young woman. No doubt she is right then experiencing a surge of renewed confidence in her ability to resurrect her full game and past dominance. And at the same time her hope is returning for other future Grand Slam triumphs. Which was not to be. Das ist das Ende - all good things come to an end. The tragedy of young Monica Seles's life remained whole and real, and could not be effaced by this exciting triumphal return to the game.
    So, as a matter of historical fact, Monica Seles's period of glory, like a shining comet in the tennis sky that soon passes away, was over. But her ingrained love of tennis kept her traveling in the international circus of tournaments, chasing titles and prizes, in a continual struggle to maintain her high ranking, for another full seven years. It was the only life she knew. Until foot injuries got the better of her.
    In 2003, Seles started once again on the European swing of tournament tennis in Rome. There, on May 14, a younger Russian player, Nadia Petrova was leading 6-3, 4-1 in the second set, when the pain in her ankle forced Seles to withdraw. Two weeks later, on May 27, 2003, at Roland Garros in Paris, Seles confronted the same Nadia Petrova in her first-round, where she lost decisively by 4-6, 0-6, the only time Monica Seles, the invincible 3-time teenage winner and darling champion of Roland Garros, had not reached the quarter-finals. Seles couldn't even bring herself to quote those lamentable scores in her books. Her foot took a year to heal, and in 2004, she decided that was it, time to stop traveling for professional tournaments and just go home, start living for herself and finding herself outside of tennis. She was only 30 years old.

    Bittersweet memories of this. Monica's last grand slam victory, which when you look at her 90-93 record just breaks my heart, because she absolutely would have won SO MANY MORE. But watching this match again she just isn't the same player she was pre-Hamburg. I think at the time I didn't really want to accept that, because it was so amazing to have her back on the tour. The real highlight of the Aussie Open 96 was the semi final when Monica showed some of the nerves of steel she'd possessed in the early 90's. Anke really should have won the first set in this match and then who knows what might have happened? But I'm glad Monica won - even if it gave a false hope that she might be able to carry on winning the grand slams. Sadly that wasn't to be :(

      Rubin is a fascinating individual to think of at this point too. Had she not choked at the end of that semi vs Seles she almost certainly wins this event, as 99% likely she beats second tier contender Huber in the final. Yet just as this would shockingly be Seles's last slam, this shockingly would be Rubin's last even semi decent shot of a slam ever when she looked like the rising superstar of womens tennis coming out of his event. Injuries, and Hingis and the Williams sisters, and Davenport dropping down in weight from a U haul to merely a dumb truck changed everything for Rubin.

    I get deeply moved every time my memories go back to this match and I agree with Tom Ogden that seeing Monica competing again was extraordinary considering what she passed through.
    The standing ovation tributed to her by the crowd’s stadium at the end of the match is amazing and seeing his beloved father Karoly in tears is really touching.
    Unfortunately bigger existential problems were about to emerge for Monica. Her father was already suffering from stomach cancer and mostly for this reason she looked for some psychological relief with food, but this lead her to binge eating disorder and despite she was training tremendously her efforts were not enough to compensate the extra pounds she was gaining. That extra weight, together with her mind facing the brutality of real life, didn’t let her to be competitive enough for the new generation of female tennis players that were behind the corner like: Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Venus and Serena Williams, Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters and others.
    Paradoxically after having decided to retire from tennis, with great commitment and strong will, she regained her confidence and life’s control. She started new activities and showed once more how a great human person she is.
    At the end she has taught me the most important lesson after her tennis career , that is to say that sooner or later everyone has to deal with its own fragility, defects and problems which are not always solvable and for those there is no easy choices or right decisions.
    For me she will always be the real Goat in female tennis and most of all a great person.

      Seles beating Steffi in 94 AO form? Don’t be asinine.
      In 93 Steffi struggled at the AO semis against Sanchez and even lost to Navratilova one week later in Tokyo.
      But in 94 Steffi destroyed Sanchez 60 62 in the AO final and beat Navratilova 62 64 in Tokyo.
      Considering what tough work it was for Seles to beat Steffi in the AO 93 final it is no rocket science to conclude that 1994 Steffi would have easily beaten Seles in a AO final.
      Why can‘t you clowns accept that Steffi was the far superior player and Seles only a interim #1 during Steffi‘s deep slump caused by some nasty criminals? Don’t tell me that crime is a part of life…

    Thank you for this. So that is why Seles was out of action for a while after the 1995 U.S Open. And it's also why she didn't look as impressive here at this Australian Open. The fact that she still won here shows how amazing she is as a competitor.
    As for Huber, I remember watching her get to the finals at the 1995 year ending championships and then getting to the finals here. I thought maybe she had conquered her inconsistency. But IIRC, she became even streakier afterwards. Part of that was due to injuries in the late 90s and early 2000s but she could be maddening to watch sometimes. And against Seles, the match-ups just didn't favour her at all, even when Seles was not at her best. It seems like the best she could do was maybe play one tough set.

    • @harveywolfe8787
      @harveywolfe8787 7 лет назад +3

      Anke stayed consistent. She was a consistent round of 16 level play with the odd quarterfinal and the really rare semifinal, while also having some early round losses since she isnt so imposing an unseeded player dont feel they can beat her on a great day. That was her norm. I dont know why you thought she would magically be so much better than that just because she had a big event at the 95 YEC where she even benefited from an easy draw, Seles being absent, a badly slumping Sanchez, Martinez sucking ass indoors, Novotna and many others who probably would have beaten her ending up in the other half, and all the upsets that event. And even her 5 set final vs Graf was deceptive when the stats were in Graf's favor a ton, but Huber somehow snuck out every close game which is the only reason it went 5 when it could have easily beeen 6-0, 6-3, 6-1 for Graf.

    It's a real tragedy that we'll never know how Monica's career would have panned out if the stabbing hadn't happened. Although without doubt she would have won more grand slams, , there were factors which may have counted against Monica. Firstly, nobody can have a dominant run like Monica had in the early 90s without then having a serious dip. It's just too physically and mentally draining. Other players who've had such a dominant run then have had serious dips - it happened to Navratilova, Federer, Djokovic and Graf to name but a few. It's interesting that as early as 1991, Monica was talking about her problem with food and comments had been made about her weight gain even then (she said in an interview in 1991 that she was 'addicted to butter'). There were signs that the stress was perhaps starting to catch up with her at times in her match play too. For example, she went through a very dry patch for three months from the French Open 1992 to the US Open without winning a tournament, including easy straight set losses to Graf and Navratilova, and then losing her first ever match to Sanchez Vicario. Secondly, Monica never enjoyed the most robust health. In 1989/90 she had to withdraw from a number of tournaments due to injury. In 1991 she was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon due to injury and then in early 1993 she was forced to take three months off the tour due to illness - Hamburg was her first tournament back. That meant that in the year from May 1992- May 1993 she had six months in total of tour time without winning a tournament due to either illness or bad play. It's also very possible that the injuries that forced Monica out of the game may well have happened earlier if she'd kept on playing.

    When you consider Monica won 8 Grand Slams by the time she was just 19, I don't
    think any other women will come close to that. She was dominating Steffi Graff in
    play at the time, and just steam rolling along, winning consecutive tournaments. In
    this tournament here, she wins her 9th grand slam. After her win here, her dad got
    very sick the next 3-4 years, and died, and this took a lot out of Monica.
    If she would not have been stabbed in 1993 by a Graf fan ( nut) I think there is a
    good likelihood Monica would have won at least 20 slams. I have never seen a player
    play with such grit, determination and desire to win. Monica Seles always motivated
    me when I watched her play, and will always be my all time favourite tennis player.

      Be it before Seles became #1, be it when Seles was #1, be it in later years. Steffi had a winning H2H in EVERY period. Actually Seles has the WORST win/loss record ever of a #1-ranked player to any opponent with her 2-5 H2H against Steffi.
      Cherry-picking only certain matches or a diligently carved out time frame doesn’t change this.

      It's a real tragedy that we'll never know. Monica is a truly outstanding tennis player - that's not necessarily the same thing as being an outstanding athlete - Monica's skill was more in having great hands, a great tennis mind, and an absolutely iron will with brilliant concentration. I don't think anyone has ever claimed she was the greatest at athlete. She was quite candid about it herself. In terms of athletic ability, she was behind the likes of both Williams sisters, Navratilova, Court, Novotna and, yes, Graf (of whom it was said that she could run an Olympic 800 metre qualifying time and at one point after completing the grand slam in 1988 actually briefly considered changing careers to become a runner).

      if Monica was capable of winning this slam then I'm not sure what the logic is as far as her being incapable of winning more going forward? despite the tragedy stabbing a few years prior, when she came back she immediately was winning again, making the US Open final and then winning here. Why would she have not continued winning? my answer would be she just declined early. When players get so hot at an early age they often fizzle out as far as longevity. Monica should have been able to compete for years moving forward. Sure, she lost opportunities to win slams in 94/95, but if she won as soon as she returned then the only thing we can blame for Monica not having a long career would be natural decline.

    • @whfan007
      @whfan007 6 лет назад +3

      Derek Woods The same can be said about Graf who won only 1 slam after 1996. So after 1996, both lost their dominance (although still had some great results). The real question is what would have happened between 1993-1996 if Monica would have continued her natural evolution (both fitness wise and mental wise), not necessarly in the late 90’s and 00’s. Even an out of shape Monica continued being in the top five for well into the 2000s. But between 1993-1996 Monica could have passed Steffi, then starting in 1997 both were far from their dominant years so it’s irrelevant. Graf was young enough so there’s no age excuse, Serena won 10+ slams after her 30’s. It’s just that after 1996, there was Hingis, Davenport, Serena, Venus, Henin, Pierce, etc. So things became difficult for both Seles and Graf no matter what their age was.

      If Seles was so great she would have won more. She was perfectly fine after the stabbing incident. That was unfortunate but that didn't cause the decline. The field caught up to Sele's game and drove her out. Her 2 handed style was limiting. She had to compensate with extra foot speed. As she aged she slowed down.
