It's almost as canon as canon gets. It appears that Kojima can be a bit of a headcase, and maybe rightfully so considering the MGS series is his baby, but this game did right by the standards of MGS games. It's as if he wants to embrace it, but doesn't because he wasn't directing it. PW and PO are probably the 2 biggest underrated games in the series. I just finished PW and I'd say it's my 2nd most favorite in the series. I haven't played PO yet but have seen all the cut scenes online...it's a great story and it's undeniable how many links to other games are in it.
I don’t mean to sound like I dislike the game. Outside of the controls/gameplay, I love it. I think it deserves a full remake with an expanded story that accounts for the lore introduced in 4, PW and V. I’d love a remake to have an epilogue chapter showing the creation of FOXHOUND, Les Enfants Terribles, and Big Boss meeting Kaz and founding MSF.
I don't think it needs to account for those games since they are chronologically after PO. On the other hand, I'd like PW to have a few more ties to PO. But those ideas sound pretty cool. Especially the kaz one and Les Enfants Terribles. Imagine if we had a gameplay segment of Big Boss escaping the patriots like how Captain America escaped Shield in the winter soldier.
@@NobleBossI know one connection PO could have to V is the members of FOX interacting with XOF. I kinda wonder what Gene and Skull Face would think of each other lol
people going on about how if a mgs game doesnt have 100% involvement with kojima during production doesnt make it canon, makes out kojima acting like an insecure guy who can't handle the fact that someone else can make as good of an mgs game as he can lmao
That was true... When it came about the NES one. After that Kojima himself was actively encouraging their team to make Metal Gear games without him as the head of the project.
I love that you made an entire video for this, you could only say, Look the new timeline on the master collection has portable ops and rising, so they're canon.
Portable Ops was actually the first online game I ever played once I figured out how to connect to random neighbors wifi. I would stand outside for hours on the sidewalk next to my apartment complex looking for somewhat capable wifi because there was none inside my own complex.
PO and PW should have been developed on ps3 and xbox Imagine playing a console version of PO in 2006. Could have been on par with Splinter Cell Chaos theory and Hitman Blood Money if it wasn't restricted by the psp. Same goes for PW. We had to wait 4 years between then MGS4, then another 6 years for GZ. And for an xbox player it was a 10 year wait between the 2 console MGS games.
yeah i would of preferred them on console with better specifications tbh those games deserved it i didn't mind the comic book scene's but would of been better with full on cutscenes
Gotta love how much everyone romanticizes kojima. He was a game designer early in his career working for a company, he made that company a title that did well, with the company owning the rights to that ip, and went on to work on other projects. Of course they would want to make a port and a sequel, they had every right to do so with or without hum. Doing it with him was obviously the better route, but there is no reason to fault them for producing metal gear titles without him at the time, mediocre or not. As for portable ops, he considered it Canon until he decided to make peace walker. Kojima always goes on about how the consoles and hardware were never powerful enough for his visions; yet he went out of his way to make what was originally supposed to be mgs5 on the psp instead of on the ps3. Why? He wanted to show he could do better than portable ops. While he did just that, the reasoning sticks. I love kojima too, but the man has flaws and he has an ego. Retconning established lore and tying up numerous loose ends is why every game he makes attempts to explain the craziness of mgs2's plot while in the process making things more complicated, leading to more retcons. Remember, the story and scope of mgs2 was constantly changing from the intended idea of the Iraqi tanker, so lots of what we got was not exactly planned when it was written
My opinion: great story, ok gameplay, terrible controls. This game and Peace Walker should’ve used a fixed camera system (you know, like how almost the ENTIRE saga was up to that point other than MGS4 and the subsistence version of MGS3.) That way, the face buttons can be used for the traditional commands (crouch/prone, aiming/firing, CQC, etc,) and the D-Pad could be your inventory (and in the case of Portable Ops, more than just 4 options,) kinda a predecessor to how it works in MGSV.

The only, and I mean only, Metal Gear game that doesn't move the series forward from a gameplay standpoint and instead goes backwards making it way less playable than its predecessor. The story is a cool fan fiction, but still a fan fiction, because Metal Gear is so bound to his author you can't pretend anyone can just go and write a story. It doesn't have an underlying theme like all the Kojima games, it's just meaningless. It's just not that good of a game and people been praising it so they can tell themselves Metal Gear can go on without Kojima but it can't and that's just it. "Konami's masterpiece" yeah c'mon now

yeah perfectly well said man
Fukushima actually was a big role in the original trilogy. He left after MGS3 which is why the writing in 4 and V wasn't as tight and strong.
I hope we got Portable Ops in MGS: Master Collection vol 2 or vol 3. I wanna play this game again.
yeah it's a fun game
If they put Snake's Revenge in there then the Ac!d games and this are guaranteed.
It was more fun to play than peace walker. I didn’t finish PW, and I am baffled by why people praise it and dumps on portable ops
This is game is absolutely canon. It fits the Solid timeline better than mgsv.
a lot of fools would disagree even though kojima pretty much confirmed it was but hey guess you can't reason with dummies
