Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid, has said that there is a single word... a single theme that can summarize each mainline game in the Metal Gear Solid saga. With that, I decided to look at each game in the series exclusively through the lens of their respective theme. Today, we will be looking at the single word/theme that summarizes Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. That word is "peace".

Having to kill The Boss the first time brought me to tears. Watching an echo of her soul overtake all logic and reason just to sacrifice herself again, and prevent thermonuclear war a second time was another punch in the gut. For the short time we got to actually know her, I can think of few characters that can have so much detail written into so little writing. What an unbelievably powerful character design.
I agree but when Huey says it’s using its heart it just ruins it for me. Mega cringe
@@bigorange4919You sound fucking five. What mature person would ever unironically say 'mega cringe.'
Yeah…. No it didn’t. There was absolutely zero character building with her. Stop lying for clout
@@FlyingKlutchKick Having an opinion =/= lying. Stop being an egotistical sycophant for clout.
More accurately you got to know what strangelove’s fan fiction/headcanon version of the boss
I like that Strangelove is named after the movie about this same situation, an automated doomsday device that will end us all if someone, anyone makes an erratic choice. I see Peace Walker as the serious counterpart to the satirical movie, taking the same ideas under a different lens. It also happens to be my favourite stealth oriented Metal Gear game, I'm glad we're on the same page about it being underappreciated.
Stanley Kubrick's movie - "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb". It's masterpiece (like all the Kubrick's movies)
@@GeneralMiller92FIN Man Kojima is a darn genius for understanding Kubrick's Motives after his passing I wanna thank Max Derrat for deciphering it if he is the next G.O.A.T on
understanding symbolism tho.
@@GeneralMiller92FIN In relation to OP, the book that Kubrick based his movie off is a more serious telling of the story on in the book. Kubrick turned the story into a comedy on purpose.
"stealth oriented metal gear game"
Fellow revengeance enjoyer?
@@TOG285 both do their thing perfectly crazy how they couldn’t be more different but are in the same game series lol
I like to think of Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes AND The Phantom Pain collectively as Metal Gear Solid V. Two seasons of an expensive tv show with special in between
I've said this same thing many times before and no one has ever thought that conclusion made any sense. So, although it might be selfish of me, it makes me very happy to see someone else at the same conclusion.
Peace Walker is the beach episode of the MGS series. If you really think about it, the main plot is actually the B-plot and the main thing people should be enjoying are the side-ops, characters, setting and overall slice of life feel. Cause once that’s over it’s all depressing shit from that point onwards.
@@purvdragon-sensei Funny how Peace Walker was my first MGS game.
@@abnerdoon4902
Same, I honestly don’t get how people could get so uppity about it, at worst it’s the little brother of the series, you could just ignore it, but you’d be missing out on so much good stuff.
Yeah, kinda. And first season was way better.
Something that seeing now in retrospective, if more people had played Peace Walker before the release of V, they would've known that V couldn't be about Big Boss turning in to a villain
Why not? Why couldn't V be about Big Boss becoming a villain?
@@r3gret2079 Because that's what Peace Walker does, you can't make it happen twice. Before Peace Walker the idea we get is that Big Boss whole motivation was about The Boss and creating a wold where soldiers are free out of good will, with Peace Walker's true end we see that Big Boss rejects The Boss and he becomes the warmonger for the sake of his own self fulfiment he his in the MSX games.
@ricardomiles2957 yayayayayya thats exactly what I was about to come back with. K ya I'm 100% with you. Just had to ask for clarification. I appreciate you.
Edit: I originally thought you meant he shouldn't be a villain at all in V. Had to ask. Lol right on
This game is really underrated. The true MGS V, since we see the point where Big Boss heart changed and abandon The Boss ideals. Can't recommend this game enough.
Fun fact - In development, this game was originally called MGS5: Peacewalker
Not watched the video fully yet so not sure it mentions this
I did QA for MGS Collection, i lost count the number times I beat MGS2 and 3, I hope I never play it again.
Except for Peacewalker. This game is a gem
To me, that moment happened in Portable Ops, when Snake is facing Cunningham and tells him directly: " I'm doing this out of loyalty to myself! I'm not gonna live my life the way the Boss did-!"
I really enjoy MGSV, for what it's worth. It does have depth but it's story is very much beneath the surface and I was initially, a bit befuddled and disappointed with it...but 3rd time through I'm having a blast. Will always love MGS1 AND 3 the most though
@@outerheaven2k7 Have you ever considered posting videos of your strats? I'm always up for watching another perspective.
That masculine urge to build a mother base ✊😩
The masculine urge to make a baby with a mother base😓😓😓😓✊️✊️✊️
Finally someone talks about PeaceWalker. It deserves it.
Edit: But I do wish you talked more about the surreal dreams snake has about the boss and the robot having the butterflies too.
Shit I wish he'd talked about the fucking gameplay at least once during this 40 minute exposition dump. This was more of a recap than a retrospective
30:54 just to interject, i personally love this mission, because of the fact that it's Big Boss taking on an entire base filled with soldiers on red alert. Even though Metal Gear is still Tactical Espionage, the fact that for this one mission it's a straight up run-and-gun gives the game the breath of fresh air that it needed. All the other missions have ranged from sneaking to battling vehicles, but for this one mission, it's a firefight. There was one other "firefight" mission before the Cocoon boss fight, but it was more campy since you can sit in one spot and take everyone out easily, giving it that "Sniper Elite" feeling. However for this one mission, you have to run-and-gun, and i love it. 💚
No Walkman allowed. Gotta jam to Heaven's Divide!
Exactly, all the games have a moment like that towards the end, it's fun
Not to mention they're great for challenge runs ok replays. Little design choices like this help keep the game alive
Me too!
The most compelling thing for me that came out of MGS 3 and Peace walker was how the various parties interpreted the Boss’s Will
This series of video essays have been some of the most concise and insightful on the subject of Metal Gear. Great work, thank you.
The fact you can't crawl is what pissed me off in this one but loved it and me and my little brother managed to beat this epic game on our PSP Gos back in 2010.
Peace Walker despite its flaws has my favourite MGS story. It builds on MGS3 so much and the evolution from Snake to Big Boss is so good. His speech at the end "...our heaven, our hell, this is Outer Heaven." is to me Kojima's finest writing work
Grew up with this on the PSP, vividly remember fighting Peacewalker during a family luncheon in Nicaragua, my cousins couldn't believe our country was centre-stage for any game. We were kids and didn't quite grasp the political underpinnings nor loftier subject matter, but the comradery of MSF stuck by me for life. Replayed it when I was older, found it just as great, couldn't agree more that it is essential to the totality of MGS V; by far one of my very favourite games.
Also remember teenaged me blushing at the "date with Paz" op.
I've never played a MGS game, but I've watched all your videos about them and feel like my understanding of humanity is better for having seen them, thank you!
Finally a video that fully Analyses this game's brilliant story
One of my favorites games for sure
Man, seing this video just reminds me again of how much I love this game.
Peace Walker has my favourite story of the series.
i love it dude, your way of breaking things down and looking over them is fascinating to me, and inspiring.. it makes me want to endure and do the same with life and its many scenarios.. as well as games and films and shows ive watched, looking for patterns and comparisons.. its amazing, keep it up ^__^ so much effort and work goes into these, just awesome :3
Great video (as usual), thanks for the effort!
My favorite game in the series with MGS 1 and 5, you just made my evening 🥰
Your analysis are just out of this world. If the game was available, it already had my money on it.
Man you do have a talent to this 🙂
Peace Walker is an absolute MASTERPIECE, only held back by hardware limitations. MGS3 is my fav game of all time, but if PW was a console game, ooowee it would be an easy top fav. One of the most important titles in the entire franchise, if not thee most important, period.
Edit; not only does Snake finally fully acept and take on the moniker "Big Boss", but this is also where he reshapes the ideals given to him by Gene, turning "Army's Heaven" into "Outer Heaven", and starts to put that ideal into motion.
There's only one thing, that would make Peace Walker a perfect game. One thing, MAKING THE TORTURE SEQUENCE LESS DIFFICULT!!!
Of course! I was only able to play it in one slot because of thatXD
If thats not immersion I don't know what it
@@DuelJ007 Indeed it was, but it would have been far more enjoyable only if the difficulty was bit lower. I died so many times during the sequence, I lost count. It made me frustrated so I looked up guides online and even gave it to other people to try to beat for me, but to no result. So I downloaded the completed save file and skipped the mission.
Don't get me wrong, story-wise and immersion-wise it's almost perfect, but that difficulty was just unbearable for me.
@@zaltajobratil3589 took me 3years to beat it on the psp
Brooo... i wasted like a hour trying to figure out what i was doing wrong xD
Every squence was so hard i nearly broke my psp, and then you dont even know what to do. I only completed this mission after watching youtube video.
Peacewalker is definitely one of my favorite mgs games. Shame it got overlooked because of it being a psp release.
a couple of corrections, the crew of the sub did not believe the charges were nuclear detonations, but they did believe they were under attack
the sub did have nuclear weapons, but it was a nuclear torpedo, not meant to attack surface targets like cities, however there was a risk of DRAMATICALLY escalating the conflict, because after you use a nuclear weapon on someone else, the genie is kind of out of the bottle
man i love this series, mgs is one of my favourite franchises ever
My first experience with MGO was on Peace Walker. The HD Collection on 360 was amazing! This is one of my personal favorite Metal Gear games
you just casually be dropping the fact that you're working on a MGSV video at the end of this one? insanity. I look forwards to it.
I actually snatched the ID card in my playthru and still tried the default route of breaking out of the cell. My xbox bricked and i sprained my wrist before i could get out that way. Before this video i genuinely believed the Xbox hd collection was bugged and you couldn't get past the torture scene.
I'm just heading about this "peace" of ART. 👌 Wow this is so amazingly AWESOME.
Thank You so much. I will now sit through this whole BEAUTIFUL storyline on RUclips.
EDIT: WAIT.... IS THIS SNAKE EATER/ WELP JUST HEARD IT, HE SAID "YEARS AFTER SNAKE EATER"
What a God tier video I’m just blown away by this
Love the video and the game , this was my introduction to the Metal Gear Series and a showcase for the PSP .
'When I inevitably discuss the events of MGS5..." Nice, I wouldn't mind seeing that. Just lemme open his channel and find that other video he probably made years ago. [Realizes the vid I just watched is only 14 hours old.] _GODDAMNIT!_
Definitely appreciate leaving out Paz's part. The best vids like this filter down to just the core elements that speak to the theme being examined and basically all of this vid did that which was great. (There were rare moments of weirdness, like mentioning shrapnel hitting a door to provide access to a facility, but overwhelmingly the video covers the theme of peace and is a fantastic vid overall! Thanks for sharing!)
One of the most underrated MGS, I loved it a lot!
Also the limitation of the psp hardware gave me some feeling of the original ps1 MGS mixed with Phantom pain stuff (Fulton, mother base development).
Ashley Wood drawings for the cutscenes were also amazing
Also I think MGS peace walker story is still really relevant especially in current times
Metal gear as a series is a work of art. Almost every game is thought provoking...except for survive.
My fav of the series, and I’m a hardcore MGS fan.
Great video Max, I've been needing to complete PW for such a long time, to prepare for V. I may now have enough info to jump into Phantom Pain. But now I want to play Peace Walker even more now.
I happened to play MGSV before this one, but boy, Peace Walker was intense. I think it was even better, because I was heart broken after V (the main plot twist plus other companion's stories). Playing PW after V was some kind of cure.
All the BB struggle was so well put. The Boss's backstory, the feelings, and *the horse scene...* (You know which one).
To this day my top three is: Snake eater, Peace Walker and MGSV. Linked story, same characters, the strength of the plot decreasing each title. But beautiful nonetheless.
Great video! Kind of a shame you never did a video over Portable Ops (the other PSP game with Big Boss) since I’d also call that kind of underrated. But I get it, Kojima didn’t make it, and it’s still debatable whether or not you can call that a mainline game in the saga.
That's precisely why I decided not to. It's not part of Kojima's "one-word theme" saga.
It is part of the saga! It's gameplay isn't as refined as PW but the story is definately worth checking out. It features the end of FOX and beggining of Foxhound, the first appearence of Colonel Campbell and Grey Fox and is a direct sequel to Snake Eater.
@@papapapa16 it's not part of the "one word theme" of the saga. And the story is the exact reason it isn't considered canon anymore(not even by Kojima). It needlessly retcons Gray Fox and ruins the mystique of Big Boss by saying the idea for Outer Heaven wasn't even his. "Army's Heaven? I'll just replace the Army with Outer and say it was my life long dream". That games story was a mess and I see why Kojima treats it like a bad fever dream of the franchise(or alternate timeline ala Ghost Babel).
@@thefearofg0ds758 what's the "one word theme"? And what about Fox was retconned? He fought against the portuguese regime in Mozambique and later found Naomi in Zimbabwe, that was already explained in MGS. Also Gene had the concept of Outer Heaven, but Big Boss had a different interpretation of the Boss's will initially. He only decided to go through with it and form MSF to go against Zero because the Enfants Terrible was the last straw for him. Gene saw soldiers as expendable assets, Snake wanted to give them purpose and jobs. Liquid also had plans for his own Outer Heaven with the genome soldiers. In any case, PO doesn't contradict any of the later games and contributes more to the story than Phantom Pain, there's no reason to consider it non-canon, screw Kojima. It's a great prequel for PW, much better than just "oh I started this merc group because I'm pissed at what they did to my mentor 10 years ago".
@@papapapa16 I'd say it is always the best way to treat it as semi-canon. Because as you said it does create that "Last straw" moment that finally pushes Snake to abandon USA to begin with - others also somewhat right that it is not as deep as other games... But it doesn't need to.
Personally always viewed it as a Prologue to Piece Walker + MGS5. Told from Big Boss perspective, not quite consistent or deep - but a good story he tells people who ask why he left USA and started MSF.
Incredible. I'm playing all the Metal Gear games chronologically and started this one a few days back. This definately deserves a remake with PS4 graphics.
Dude that ending is no fair I can’t wait to see the video on the phantom pain max has a way of making me see things I thought I knew extremely well and just turns around and flips my life and understanding of it on its head all while teaching me extremely intelligent things about it and doing it with ease his mgsv video is gonna be nuts
A really interesting story I would not have witnessed otherwise told in a very clear way, thank you!
oh god you killed those names
Great visual essays, thanks for sharing and creating great content. Subscribed.
I was going through your metal gear videos a few hours ago. I decided to get to work so I watched your scymchronicity video and logged off RUclips. Now the first video I see when I start my break is this... Max what is the universe trying to tell me!!!???
Some of us will be superhuman soon and carry on a new fight
Fantastic video as usual. I have an issue with how the use of nuclear weapons is portrayed in common parlance.
Vasili Arkhipov is a heroic individual but we do not all owe our lives to him. Nuclear war does not mean humanity's extinction, nor does it necessarily mean the end of civilization as we know it. There are an infinite number of possible outcomes in a nuclear exchange and some of the most extreme involve the death of billions of people. Hyperbolically assuming that all life on Earth will be snuffed out in a nuclear exchange diminishes public understanding of the threat of nuclear weapons. It also presupposes that countries that are nuclear powers encompass all of humanity. They do not. Arkhipov saved thousands and maybe millions of lives, but suggesting they saved Earth from a black hole is inaccurate.
Again, fantastic video, just hoping to push discussion of nuclear weapons in a more realistic direction as it's a big part of Metal Gear.
Love this channel man, love the deep dives and the high-quality writing you produce. Especially after watching every MGS video on RUclips lol. Ty and happy new year!
You're pretty good!
When I beat Peace Walker I didn't touch the Epilogue. So when I picked up Ground Zeroes it was spoiled for me. Haha. I find it very fitting that you left out the part with Paz
14:00 there is a much darker interpretation of this scene, where Chico is essentially Big Boss's first child soldier...
@Тити Мити 😭
I knew that a Russian refused to retaliate, but I forgot his name until I watched this video.
Beautiful video my friend ! Very clear and concise.
19:46 "At least to those willing to crack a few eggs." That phrase has two meaning in the Metal Gear context.
Finally, Peace Walker deserves more love.
Cool video but don't let this distract you from the fact that EVERY CHRISTMAS, NORAD SETS UP A HOTLINE--
This is the real reason they kicked out huey in my headcanon. And nobody can change that
Peace walker is for the hardcore mgs fans. A phenomenal game that did things that console games, even mgsv FAILED to do.
I think you didn't do the surreal elements of the boss's involvement in the story justice. Those dream sequences i feel have a heavy impact in snakes resolution to change, a surreal spector of her challenges his thoughts in his dream memories, while a cold real machine threat scrambles to recollect the the words for everything
Wonderful video. Peace Walker is one of my most favorite games ever and the second MGS game I've ever finished.
This timestamp 13:32 may also cause some "conflicts" of massive magnitude with the viewer's "internal timeline" lasting for about 1 minute and 14 seconds "for a S-Special reason."
I thought Vasili said "no" because he thought they couldn't be sure it was nuclear missiles and didn't want to jump the gun.
This game needs a remaster so bad
In the end i had more fun playing this and MGS Ground Zero in preparation for MGS:V than with MGS:V itself.
Loved this game on my PSP when I was a teen
I love that this game ends with an almost literal due’s ex machina.
*deus ex machina
I know you might not be getting as many views doing these vs other types of videos. Just wanted to tell you that it is really appreciated nonetheless. Thank you for all of these retrospectives.
damn it, now I have to go back and beat MGS5 so I don't get spoiled. Good videos btw
did it have spoilers? I can't watch it either :(
My problem with MGS V after having started with Peace Walker was the 180 degree turn in Huey's character. I think they managed to make him either too likable in Peace Walker or too horrible in MGS V. But regardless, I really love Peace Walker. I've played it through on PSP, PSP emulator on PC, then the PS3 HD version on an emulator and now once more on an Xbox Series X. Can't get enough of it.
I haven't finished this game so I can't watch this video BUUUUT Who else loved that beginning cutscene to persuade snake into accepting this mission?!?! It was an entire story in of itself. Intelligence and deciet mixed with lies and truth. All culminating in them essentially breaking the legendary snake and snake ending with a lie saying he'll do it for Paz. Chefs kiss!
Less than 3 minutes in and Max has already hooked me I gotta go before it's too late.
We have entered a new era.
*Metal Gear Solid 5: Peacewalker*
14:58 he also met Hideo Kojima.
Honey, wake up. There's a new Max Derrat Metal Gear video out.
A walk of peace? Or a dance or death? In the eyes of a madman, they may be one and the same. Next, on TBS!
This video somehow escaped my notice, so when I saw your MGSV video, I thought you skipped PW because “not numbered” (even though it’s just as important as a numbered game). Glad I was mistaken!
Skullface shoul've been Hot Coldman, they have a lot in common. Even down to the stupid names lol
I only just figured out Hot Coldman's name and... just... jesus. I love Kojima names but that one is so on the nose
What does it mean?
I'm so glad i still have my hunter green sppecial edition psp that came with the game.
Peace walker was simply perfect 👌🏾
Great video, despite his limitations, Peace Walker is a great game, eager to play the phantom pain and reach the conclussion of the franchise (my expectations are low)
Read Elite Theory.
I can recommend starting with James Burnham's The Machiavellians. It will help you understand power dynamics.
Love your videos btw
I did not knew this game was so hated. It's actually one of my favorites.
So good, Max!
Hey man! Love this series you made. Would you talk about "Portable Ops" someday?
Amazing video! For me, MGS: Peace Walker is the last great MGS game, that ties the story and complete MGS saga together.
Perfect as usual ...thank u max
Plz explain silent hill the room
It wasnt just a horse it was the bosses white mule from mgs3.
I feel like snake didn't give up the truth about the boss because it would be against the wishes if the boss. Beyond the pursuit of peace it was doubly
Yeah, but what's the symbolism behind fighting a Rathalos while eating Doritos?
Its an argument in favorbof Absurdism of course!
@@DuelJ007 An abstraction of surrealism to highlight the monstrosity of nuclear deterrence and the sheer amount of salt in Doritos.
This may seem kind of silly, but I think you meant the game was underplayed or something like that, since you said yourself that the game is highly rated.
That means it can't be underrated.
Love the Video.
The game isn't just about World Peace.
Its about Self-Peace, continuing MGS's theme of Identity. Turns out, the things you think might give you peace, may give you hell instead.
When people debate wether or not games can radicalize people- I say yes. This game solidified my stance on nuclear weapons, MAD theory, Weapons Limitations, Anti-Nuclear weapons proliferaiton, and many other things. Portable Ops disolved most of my sense of nationalism too.
I wonder with this notion than A.I should run nukes is from Hideo Kojima.
That half an hour felt like 5 minutes.
Very timely video given the state of Attack on Titan. We are seeing a peace walker... and there's alot of walking.....
30:37 thus creating one of the best stages in mgs: pw
You think you'll cover MGS Portable Ops? Portable Ops is a pretty underrated Metal Gear Game
this seems like a really nice and expensively thorough explanation, but I cannot see it for fear of spoilers on MGS V. can someone please confirm whether or not this has spoilers on MGS V ?
~ thanks 🙏
I haven't played MGSV yet, but I absolutely despise Paz's betrayal, I couldn't tell you why, but it's demotivated me to play MGSV.
I really wish Kojima didn't do that.
Do you mean in PW? Paz's betrayal was the most predictable thing in the entire game lmao. It's hinted at early on and she was always far too sickly sweet to be genuine. 8/10 times people in real life who are sickly sweet and are too nice have a very ugly side to them. I've come across scammers like that (and idiots who have been sucked in by them).
There was no emotional depth to her "betrayal." A 12-year-old hormonal boy having a crush on her didn't give it any. The adults should've been able to see through her.
Replaying it now and it still impresses me how good it is. People missed how subtly Kojima told Big Boss' villain arc at the time. Playing it now, just hearing the ominous Metal Gear Hangar music tells you all you need to know.
Happy valentine's day my dood 🎉
Peace Walker is way better than mgsv and the others in my opinion, more in touch with reality if you ask me, this along with portable ops changed my views of the world dramatically
Hopefully we are getting one for metal gear solid 5: revenge/race
