Totally agree. As a russian, i find this amount of damage on these rounds offensively low. They perform in the game like pistol rounds but irl they could be compared to subsonic .366 tkm. In russian army two types of 9×39 exist. Sp5 is a sniper round w better accuracy that is basically used in vss Vintorez (sniper val w wooden stock). And sp6 is an armor piercing round but it has worse accuracy. Its used by as val operators. Imho it would be interesting and more fair in game if there was an ability to choose armor piercing rounds instead of 30r mag. Rounds w bigger damage will add some sense to use the pso scope for this gun

Honestly, in either Insurgencies, I never really cared for the guns stats, or how "good" it was. I just play whatever I wanted at that minute. People drop dead when you hit them and that's all I care about :P And I feel like using VAL quite alot, just for the cool factor
I really like the AS VAL but I can definitely see where you're coming from. No gun is perfect (except the m16a4 maybe lol) and a gun can work flawlessly for one person and terribly for another. Also, for categorization I generally think of the AS VAL as an assault rifle since it fires a cartridge that's essentially just a necked-up subsonic 7.62x39. (7.62x39 is the round used by the AKM for those who are unaware) It's actually a little strange that its damage in Sandstorm is comparable to SMGs, since IRL its round was designed to pack as much punch as possible while remaining subsonic, being probably fairly comparable to the aforementioned 7.62x39.

I absolutely understand where you're coming from. I *wanted* to like the AS VAL so badly. I was so ready for that slick Spetsnaz loadout, especially going for full NVGs and point shooting on night maps. I really only play co-op, so I can't say how well it works in actual Player vs. Player settings, but it seemed like it would work great against the AI. Sadly, it just doesn't do enough. Single-shot won't drop an AI like the G3 or FAL, so you have to use full-auto. Full-auto is too fast and your magazine is too small, so you really have to feather your trigger. And even then, the recoil is just a bit too high, so you might miss entirely or only wing your target. At close range it's all right, but it really suffers at any sort of range, and it's just not punchy enough for how bad the spread is. I still want to like it though.

AS Val is thrash. In this game, it does less damage than any 9mm pistol bullet (which is dumb if you ask me). It should 2 shot kill unarmored and light armored targets (9x39mm delivers more energy than any 9x19mm bullet). It eats you ammo terribly fast. Those 1000 rpm don't make any sense, they should reduce it to 900 rpm (like the real VAL) so extended mags are not a must anymore. The Val is one of the worst weapons right now, it definitely needs a buff.
That it provides less energy down range than the 9x19mm might indicate just how much slower this subsonic round is than the standard, lighter 9mm, though the damage is not realistically portrayed (9x39mm is much more powerful than people realize of course). I doubt they will buff it too much, just to make the player actually "feel" the drawback of having an integrated silencer where normally it would take the sacrifice of points, and of course to "feel" the delay to emphasize the sub-sonic nature of the bullet itself so that it doesn't crack the air. The VAL has always been to me the "assassins" AK, made to handle really well the situations that the other guns in Insurgency just happen to be better at where sub-sonic velocities don't really benefit anyone.

When I first tried this gun, I did not expect it to perform like a BB gun beyond spitting distance. Seriously, that thing feels so weak beyond close range.
I adore the AS-VAL I feel like it's the only gun I can pop off with. In my hands it becomes a murder machine. I like keeping the irons and just putting on the extendo mag with the reloading grip and voila. perfection.
The val by definition is an assault rifle, it was made for special forces specifically for penetrating armour. It was actually banned in a conflict because it wasnt seen as “humane” since the SP6 9x39 rounds just melt armour and tear people apart. However it is still in use today by some russian special forces and FSB operators.
Honestly the thing I like about Insurgency is the low time to kill for almost every gun. The AS Val (& and the sks( fuckin bite me )) can be really good as long as u play to the role of the weapon and get used to it to. At the end of the day imo the best thing to do is find a gun u have fun using and take the time to learn it. While there are meta guns and u definitely won’t out right beat those guns out in some situations it’s gonna come down to you being more comfortable with the gun choice u made. Like I said even tho you can still just get out right beaten by a better gun u can still win most engagements with just about any gun as long as u GET GUD SCRUB

I don’t know if it’s a “technique” or just me failing to control the muzzle climb, but I’ll often end matches with the most headshots without ever trying because the muzzle just tends to climb right up to the enemy’s head lol. I think once you get down the amount of time on target needed to get a kill the gun becomes a lot more useful because you stop using more ammo than needed. I also really like the iron sights which are pretty amazing compared to the folded MP7 sights, let alone the MP5. Tracers are nice for practicing your hip firing too
It's kind of funny when you try to classify it. Like you said, is it an SBR? A PDW? A submachine gun? Where does it fit? Having shot one of these with Russian special police, it is ironically a DMR. Or at least that is the closest description in the American concept of weapon employment. The police very seldom have it selected to full auto, and they're not nearly as shy about selecting full auto as the Americans. But the AS VAL and VSS vintorez are almost exclusively equipped with a PSO-1 4X optic and fired in semi automatic. Both rifles are remarkably accurate and have extremely light recoil. They typically employ it at less than 100m in precision shooting. So it's like the American concept of a DMR in terms of rapid follow up shot precision shooting, but different in that they have very little intention of deploying past their zero range. Interesting rifle, definitely not one with an easy corollary to American weapons.
@@wanderingwonder111 They don't employ it as a de facto squad weapon like an SVD, it's kept for specific jobs. If they know a situation before entering, it will be chosen if it matches the circumstances.
The reason why the action cycling is louder than the gun firing is that the AS-VAL fires subsonic ammunition which removes the main source of gun noise, the sound barrier breaking.
I know I'm way too late on this, but to anyone saying that 9x39 is way too weak compared to 7.62x39 in-game, it actually isn't... Kinda. The way game calculates damage is it has a damage curve for every calibre, where it has a damage value corresponding to the velocity of the bullet. And a 9x39 going at the same speed as a 7.62x39 would do up to 15% more damage, but since the bullet velocity of AS VAL is so low it ends up doing almost half the damage of AKM
I haven't played this game but want to... From what your saying I gathered your prefered type of weapon is an all rounder, one that can be used at range, used in close range or mid range while having utility.
This gun is what can be called "OP" in real life keep in mind it shoots a massive caliber bigger then the 7,62x39 the AKM shoots. But it's subsonic that's why it's so quiet. A slow traveling hard hitting caliber. The predecessor of the as val the vss is basically the same just with semi auto only and a fixed wooden stock is used as a sniper rifle in the Russian armed forces. But it's used more as a designated marksman rifle.

Isn't it weird that what's basically the other variant of this gun, the VSS Vintorez, is a designated sniper rifle, despite keeping the same subsonic round and also having a 700RPM full auto mode? Russian guns are weird. I kind of wish the caliber damage was higher, since the bullet is pretty chunky, so you could use it as a sneaky high skill-ceiling steep trajectory one-shot gun with the scope.
Ehhhhhhhhhhh, "DMR" is a stretch. The VSS would be more accurately described as a sniper rifle for clandestine/undercover work. DMRs are primarily designed to give a squad marksman extended range so that they are able to deal with any targets that are beyond the range of a rifleman. The VSS has a engagement range of 400 meters. A M4A1 has a effective engagement range of 500 and the M110/SR25 and MK 14 EBR have well beyond 800 meters with a magnified optic. The VSS was clearly not designed with squad support in mind. If anything it was designed for solo use, hence it's briefcase like carrying case.
I'd say the asval is one of the solid pick for the insurgent breacher class. Since the only other sensible choice would be the mp5a2, which has lower rof, worse iron sight and velocity close to asval.
I have a feeling the AS VAL was intended to be used mostly in semi-auto so the 20 round magazine wouldn't matter so much. My understanding was it was issued as a weapon for point men who might need to remove sentries and the like.

To be clear, for something to be considered an SMG it has to: -fire a pistol caliber round (S) -be capable of automatic fire (MG) -not be a machine pistol -not be a PDW (designed as a defensive only weapon) Thus the As Val is an internally suppressed rifle carbine
No optic. Laser pointer. Recoil grip and extended mags make this my ideal gun for maps like ministry or tell. Becaue I die all the time, I even got rid of the light ammo vest to spare some money on a Browning hp as a sidearm.
The weapon fires a 9x39 rounds which was declared a literal warcrime to use, it was so good at killing people. All they need to do really is increase the stopping power and it's effective range is already pretty short so leave it as is.
@doomslayer5735 it still has high drop off for range because of the low velocity but in CQB its like a 2-3 tap depending on the vest. They tuned the fire rate down to 900 but it's much more usable. Its a superior CBQ gun to the mp5 now for sure.
@doomslayer5735 hard to compare. Val's velocity is like 253-270, the mp7 is like 715-750. Similar fire rate but Mp7 is more effective at range especially because of the Vals drop and damage drop off, plus the mp7 is easier to control. I would always use the extended mags on both because of the firerates. Round for round you probably get more value out of the Val, but if not always CBQ you would be better off with the Mp7. Source: I'm like level 1800 or something close to that, I've got atleast a hundred kills with every primary gun. Favorite game from the last few years. (Just a little bonus tip: quick draw holsters and grips are cumulative and effect the entire inventory, and the Welrod let's you pick up primary weapons off the ground in half the time if you run the quickdraw. Try to play like Hotline Miami, where you can't reload, you just gotta steal a new weapon.)

@@somerandommen nope. The M16 is an infantry rifle/assault rifle. The barrel is too long to be a carbine. Also, a PDW is defined as “A class of compact, select fire, magazine fed, firearms that use a rifle round”. This definition 100% fits the MP7 and VAL. Also, the M16 doesn’t fit the definition of a carbine. So, maybe try to correct people once you learn.
I've tried playing with the VAL a handful of times when I first started playing breacher class, and it sucked. It felt like every kill took 7-8 bullets even at decently close range. I'd stop shooting after seeing so many rounds hit just to realize that the guy is still standing. Nowadays I almost exclusively use the suppressed grease gun as primary and the MR 73 scoped single action for longer engagements, and it's a hilariously effective loadout. My TTK on the grease gun is better than with the VAL honestly. TL;DR: I concur with the statement that the VAL is certified armpit. GREASY GANG.

I also really like the iron sights which are pretty amazing compared to the folded MP7 sights, let alone the MP5. Tracers are nice for practicing your hip firing too

It's kind of funny when you try to classify it. Like you said, is it an SBR? A PDW? A submachine gun? Where does it fit?
Having shot one of these with Russian special police, it is ironically a DMR. Or at least that is the closest description in the American concept of weapon employment. The police very seldom have it selected to full auto, and they're not nearly as shy about selecting full auto as the Americans. But the AS VAL and VSS vintorez are almost exclusively equipped with a PSO-1 4X optic and fired in semi automatic. Both rifles are remarkably accurate and have extremely light recoil. They typically employ it at less than 100m in precision shooting. So it's like the American concept of a DMR in terms of rapid follow up shot precision shooting, but different in that they have very little intention of deploying past their zero range. Interesting rifle, definitely not one with an easy corollary to American weapons.

@@wanderingwonder111 They don't employ it as a de facto squad weapon like an SVD, it's kept for specific jobs. If they know a situation before entering, it will be chosen if it matches the circumstances.
The reason why the action cycling is louder than the gun firing is that the AS-VAL fires subsonic ammunition which removes the main source of gun noise, the sound barrier breaking.

I know I'm way too late on this, but to anyone saying that 9x39 is way too weak compared to 7.62x39 in-game, it actually isn't... Kinda. The way game calculates damage is it has a damage curve for every calibre, where it has a damage value corresponding to the velocity of the bullet. And a 9x39 going at the same speed as a 7.62x39 would do up to 15% more damage, but since the bullet velocity of AS VAL is so low it ends up doing almost half the damage of AKM

From what your saying I gathered your prefered type of weapon is an all rounder, one that can be used at range, used in close range or mid range while having utility.
This gun is what can be called "OP" in real life keep in mind it shoots a massive caliber bigger then the 7,62x39 the AKM shoots. But it's subsonic that's why it's so quiet. A slow traveling hard hitting caliber. The predecessor of the as val the vss is basically the same just with semi auto only and a fixed wooden stock is used as a sniper rifle in the Russian armed forces. But it's used more as a designated marksman rifle.

Isn't it weird that what's basically the other variant of this gun, the VSS Vintorez, is a designated sniper rifle, despite keeping the same subsonic round and also having a 700RPM full auto mode? Russian guns are weird. I kind of wish the caliber damage was higher, since the bullet is pretty chunky, so you could use it as a sneaky high skill-ceiling steep trajectory one-shot gun with the scope.
Ehhhhhhhhhhh, "DMR" is a stretch. The VSS would be more accurately described as a sniper rifle for clandestine/undercover work.
DMRs are primarily designed to give a squad marksman extended range so that they are able to deal with any targets that are beyond the range of a rifleman.
The VSS has a engagement range of 400 meters. A M4A1 has a effective engagement range of 500 and the M110/SR25 and MK 14 EBR have well beyond 800 meters with a magnified optic.
The VSS was clearly not designed with squad support in mind. If anything it was designed for solo use, hence it's briefcase like carrying case.

Damage is so shit for a 6 pointers, especially for a 9x39 which is absolutelty cursed.
I'd say the asval is one of the solid pick for the insurgent breacher class. Since the only other sensible choice would be the mp5a2, which has lower rof, worse iron sight and velocity close to asval.

I have a feeling the AS VAL was intended to be used mostly in semi-auto so the 20 round magazine wouldn't matter so much. My understanding was it was issued as a weapon for point men who might need to remove sentries and the like.

I don't get why every game's VAL has to use dovetail mounts, there are VALs that have a rail on the dust cover.
To be clear, for something to be considered an SMG it has to:
-fire a pistol caliber round (S)
-be capable of automatic fire (MG)
-not be a machine pistol
-not be a PDW (designed as a defensive only weapon)
Thus the As Val is an internally suppressed rifle carbine

No optic. Laser pointer. Recoil grip and extended mags make this my ideal gun for maps like ministry or tell. Becaue I die all the time, I even got rid of the light ammo vest to spare some money on a Browning hp as a sidearm.

The weapon fires a 9x39 rounds which was declared a literal warcrime to use, it was so good at killing people. All they need to do really is increase the stopping power and it's effective range is already pretty short so leave it as is.

@doomslayer5735 it still has high drop off for range because of the low velocity but in CQB its like a 2-3 tap depending on the vest. They tuned the fire rate down to 900 but it's much more usable. Its a superior CBQ gun to the mp5 now for sure.

@doomslayer5735 hard to compare. Val's velocity is like 253-270, the mp7 is like 715-750. Similar fire rate but Mp7 is more effective at range especially because of the Vals drop and damage drop off, plus the mp7 is easier to control. I would always use the extended mags on both because of the firerates. Round for round you probably get more value out of the Val, but if not always CBQ you would be better off with the Mp7.
Source: I'm like level 1800 or something close to that, I've got atleast a hundred kills with every primary gun. Favorite game from the last few years.
(Just a little bonus tip: quick draw holsters and grips are cumulative and effect the entire inventory, and the Welrod let's you pick up primary weapons off the ground in half the time if you run the quickdraw. Try to play like Hotline Miami, where you can't reload, you just gotta steal a new weapon.)

@@somerandommen nope. The M16 is an infantry rifle/assault rifle. The barrel is too long to be a carbine. Also, a PDW is defined as “A class of compact, select fire, magazine fed, firearms that use a rifle round”. This definition 100% fits the MP7 and VAL. Also, the M16 doesn’t fit the definition of a carbine. So, maybe try to correct people once you learn.

I've tried playing with the VAL a handful of times when I first started playing breacher class, and it sucked. It felt like every kill took 7-8 bullets even at decently close range. I'd stop shooting after seeing so many rounds hit just to realize that the guy is still standing. Nowadays I almost exclusively use the suppressed grease gun as primary and the MR 73 scoped single action for longer engagements, and it's a hilariously effective loadout. My TTK on the grease gun is better than with the VAL honestly.
TL;DR: I concur with the statement that the VAL is certified armpit. GREASY GANG.
