      When VSS was modernized as VSSM, they kept the same suppressor. They didn't go fix something, that wasn't broken.
      And that is the thing here, the gun has incorrect suppressor because import sanctions.
      The VSS was well designed, and even when it can be joked "worst muffler, with some bent hardwarestore washers in it" it still does correctly everything, and is easy to clean and service.

      @@paristo Lolll, go tell that to the chieftan, who specifically mentions it in one of his videos on the topic, that the T34 would break down not only crossing small streams because it would fry the electronics if they got wet, but also that a heavy rain would do the same to them. You are legit just biased- they were garbage tanks AT THE BEGINNING. Obviously they got better over time, but that takes til the end of the war to reach real, reliable quality.

    An interesting fact about the Val is that the cartridge and supressor were designed not only to supresss the sound, but also to create vibrations that our hearing aids are less able to perceive. The sound of the shot itself is still relatively loud, but we react worse to sounds in this range.

  • @Rex_Starborne
    @Rex_Starborne 2 года назад +803

    That "first round pop" (from the bolt-action) is caused by more oxygen being in the barrel than the follow-up shots.
    Edit: If you want to fill your barrel with Co2 look up a "Gallo Drain Gun" and use that to remove the oxygen. You can then seal your system by chambering a round and taping the other end. Some suppressors also support sealing with a "wipe".

    On why the first shot was louder, that's a phenomena called "First Round Pop" or FRP. Before you start shooting there's a lot of oxygen in the suppressor that is burned off by the first and second shot and replaced by burnt gas and it gets silent after that. To negate FRP you can spray an inert gas into the suppressor to replace the oxygen like a CO2/Nitrogen spray and some military guys shoot off a round into the dirt before going on mission and tape off the barrel to keep FRP to a minimum.

      The "Shoot a round off into the dirt and put a strip of masking tape over the muzzle" trick is good for a few hours of eliminating FRP. After that, enough O2 works its way in that you have FRP again.
      So it does work, but it has its limitations.
      Also, this only applies to closed bolt guns. Where rhe fresh cartridge "seals" the breech end.

    If anyone is curious, the sound meter is not working for guns because gunshots are really loud and they are really quick. Most of the OSHA meters are trying to make sure something is under 130 dB as that is the usual limit in the United States, and it takes an average of the pressure over several seconds to register the constant but it does not sample fast enough to actually register the peak of the pressure wave. They can be somewhat useful to give relative ratings, so if you put a sampler the same distance and orientation from the muzzle of two guns then it will tell you which one is probably louder, but how much louder it is still cannot be trusted. There is absolutely no way to convert or translate those readings to actual accurate numbers. Most of the time dB ratings are worthless anyway and virtually all of the advertised levels for silencers are lies, and I say that as a design engineer for a silencer manufacturer that has published some obviously incorrect dB ratings. I still give a manager grief for publishing the dB level he got on his iPhone in the product launch announcements. "Really, you think its a 78 dB reduction? You think you invented the quietest silencer in the world on your first try?? Oh wait, our good meter says it is only a 12 dB of reduction, weird! I wonder which one is correct, given the ringing in my ears???" Daily reminder that just because someone does something for a living it doesn't mean they have any idea what the *F* they are talking about. Anyway, while the military does have an official standard of testing for how loud a gun is, usually manufacturers are not using that standard when testing (if actually testing at all). If you want legit levels hire a reputable sound engineer for a day or drop $3-5k on a forensic sound meter designed specifically for gunshots.

      Thank you, you explained it better than I could have.
      I still have to explain to people that the suppressed M3 was not 85 dB as people claimed. If they could get a .45 that quiet in the '40s, we could still do it today. They just sucked at measuring it because, well, they were using 1940s technology.

    • @karatos
      @karatos 2 года назад +3

      @@TheScrubsfanforever That's not even the half of it! Sound itself is not a simple thing, it's our interpretation of very tiny changes in air pressure over time. This means that environment is a major factor as well because the pressure wave reverberates off surfaces and comes back in echo. Outside of a sound booth there is always an echo but usually it is so fast our brain doesn't register it unless the reflection is from far enough away or if it's an echo of an echo of an echo. Since sound is a factor of pressure over time if you shoot outside in an open field on a grassy knoll for instance you mainly get the primary wave then a minor ground reverberation and that's it. If you shoot in a typical indoor range you get the primary wave then you get the reverberation off the shooting booth then off the concrete floor then off the bullet trap combined with the noise of the bullet hitting the trap (which, as they noted, is frequently louder than the gun when shooting suppressed) then the reverberation off the floor of the bullet hitting the trap. That noise just got like 6 times longer, which means it is perceived as being louder to the ear even if the actual peak of the noise was the same.

    • @karatos
      @karatos 2 года назад +7

      @@Bacteriophagebs haha exactly. This isn't to say things like the welding rod and the zipper gun and the de lisle were not super quiet for the time, they for sure were, and in some cases some guns can be made Hollywood quiet, but most were still pretty loud. It's also important to remember that the past was very loud too! Machines were much louder, cars without mufflers before our man Maxim, hard hobnailed shoes on cobble, and the reports of generals having silenced stens mag dumped within 10 yards of them and them not hearing it is less evidence of the silence of the sten and more evidence that general was a veteran of many Enfield firing lines, artillery barrages, or Vickers nests because he is probably deaf as a cabbage.

For better impact with the 300 Blackout the 240 gr Sierra Matchking was superb until they quite making them. 220 MK seems as heavy as they make now so if are using those a little doctoring to increase expansion rates may help if done carefully. I did this a long time ago with original Sierra 185 gr 45 Hollow points that would not expand. A 60 degree angle center punch my dad a tool and die maker reprofiled tap gently into the nose made a huge difference in performance and were shown to Sierra at a NSGA show in the 60's resulting in line shut down and redesign of their bullets. The same can be done with match king with a very small sharp angled punch open the tip about 2 millimeters wider in a uniform matter. Test until fast uniform expansion with tight groups are achieved.

      The key to measuring gunshots is the rise time of the sound meter. Suppressed gunshots are VERY short events and so the meter must be able to react quickly enough to capture all of the sound event. The meters that are used to capture gunshots typically require a rise time faster than 20 microseconds.

    As far as I understand suppressors, while they do provide room for the gasses to expand in the baffles, another significant part is that they direct the sound of the shot downrange better. Most likely, the sound meter is picking up the poorly reflected and disrupted sounds off of the berms and less from the rifle itself.

    10:14 the first shot was louder because the baffles in the supressor were filled with oxygen wich alowed the powder to burn longer and as a result you bullet goes faster and sound is louder, avery subsequent shot is quieter because that first shot used up all the oxygen in the supressor

      the 300 only need a 9 inch barrel to get full rotation velocity, i think 900s way too much of a low ball tbh, this prob has at least 1750

    • @frankiecrouch3918
      @frankiecrouch3918 2 года назад

      most factory 300BLK subsonic ammo (what he's shooting) is loaded to go 1050ish FPS out of a 16" barrel, with 5" barrel you are more than likely be in the lower 900 FPS. If he was shooting supersonic (1750FPS) which you suggested you would hear the sonic boom of the bullet breaking the sound barrier. You can achieve enough rotation velocity to stabilize the bullet with as short as a 4 inch barrel and maybe shorter. The whole 9" barrel thing is that if can efficiency burn its powder charge in a 9" barrel, but still benefits from added velocity in longer barrels.

      @whatsmolly5741 2 года назад

      9x39 does what it's intended to do, 300 blk is more of an improvised way of doing something similar. 300 blk factory loads are either sub sonic and equivalent in power to .45 acp or pretty much 5.56 power with more recoil and less accuracy. Would be really cool if 9x39 just became a thing instead of .300 blk becoming a thing because everyone already has .223 brass to re neck.

    Comparing noise levels is fine, but those will be close anyway (actually it would be more interesting to compare those at ~50-100 m, where some additional differences may appear due to the different sound spectra - and it's the distance where silencing actually starts to have some tactical meaning anyway). The most important part, however, is that all the tested weapons have very different ballistics, so the most informative comparative testing would be measuring accuracies and penetrating capabilities at various distances.

    "Automatic gain control (AGC) allows a microphone's signal to automatically adjust to compensate for variations in volume from different talkers, or variations due to a single talker moving relative to the mic."
    Many cameras have option to disable AGC in settings, Android smartphones need special software that have this setting available. When AGC is disabled, you need to manually adjust voice levels. So if speaker comes closer, audio level needs to be adjusted while taking video, or avoid moving while making a video.
    Or if AGC setting is not in the menu, maybe get a boombox to generate constant background noise 😁

    10:15 According to DemolitionRanch, the first shot through a supressor is louder because of the amount of oxygen present... Since most of the "barrel" IS the supressor on that gun, and the cover was screwed on just before the first shot, it would be louder than the following shots by that logic. But you'll have to contact/ watch DemolitionRanch for the specifics. (I just watched a fairly new video with Nicholas Iriving where this was mentioned by Matt 🙂)

    • @joew6277
