Brandon. There is an even simpler way to raise the lever of the gas tube. There is a special groove in the pencil case, which will allow you to insert a lever there and turn it very conveniently. He also had a large knife collection including the ones he was issued in the USMC.
Brandon really takes every opportunity he gets to take apart an M1 Garand and tell us the story of how it was the inspiration for the AK and not the Sturmgewehr.
Yes, because everybody and their mom thinks that Kalashnikov stole the Sturmgewhr idea for his gun, all they have in common are the looks, nothing else what so ever, if anything the M4/AR platform was stolen from the sturmgewhr
The idea the ak was based on the garand is fucking retarded when the Russians already had more similar firearms in production to the ak than the garand. When you look at the design targets of the ak, service rifle, medium caliber, lightweight, controllable lower rpm select fire, 100-400m range conflicts, only intended to combat infantry with light armor and minimal cover, no need to share ammo with a squad automatic weapon, comparing the ak to the garand as inspiration is just fucking retarded.

Regarding the "biggest" cartridge debate... the 30-06 has a case capacity of 68 grains vs 64 grains for the 7,62x54R and 63 grains for the 8x57 Mauser. The .308 can hold "only" 56 grains. So yeah, in theory, the 30-06 can spit out those .30 caliber bullets with a bit more zip. But in essence, they all have very similar capabilities.
Not the only big AK platform produced in 30-06. Valmet produced the Petra ( M-88 hunter) rifle also in 30-06 as well as 308, and couple of other smaller calibers too.
Small addition, there is now an AK in caliber bigger than 30-06. It is the 9,6/53 Lancaster, which is designed for internal Russian market (it counted as smooth bore caliber, which was easier to buy legally. Unfortunately since 2020 Lancaster barrels become rifled in terms of weapons law in Russia). So, there is for instance gun ВПО-221 from Molot in that caliber.
Another neat AK chambered in .30-06 is the Valmet M/88 Petra (Hunter). A Russian design based on a American rifle designed by a Canadian redesigned in Finland and chambered in the same cartridge as the original inspiration.
There was also such an option: SVDK 9.3 × 64 The "large-caliber" SVDK sniper rifle was developed and adopted by the Russian army as part of the "Cracker" program. The main task of the rifle is considered to be the defeat of enemy personnel protected by personal protective equipment (heavy body armor) or behind light obstacles. But the thing is so rare and little known that even professional military snipers have not seen them. Probably released in a small batch for a specific customer.
I gotta nitpick that it's Dragunov-based and not AK-based design. However, it's kinda sad that they eventually have shut down the production of 9,3 mm rifles, at least for civilan market there are no new production line guns. I'm pretty sure servicemen don't get those anymore either. Also I've read some complaints about quality of russian-made 9,3x64 factory ammo. Right now large game hunters in Russia either stick to smoothbores (since every hunter in Russia has a smoothbore in his shed, for legal reasons), or pick 9,3/54 Lancaster, .338LM or .375 H&H. Or, obviously, heavy bullet .30 cals and .300 magnums
@@SamuraiAkechiwhile the OP did say SVDK, which is just a modernized SVD rifle, I'm pretty sure he meant the KSVK, which is a massive bolt-action anti-material rifle.
@@dark2023-1lovesoni KSVK comes chambered in 12,7 mm soviet round, not in 9,3 Brenneke, and it's a bolt action that has nothing in common with SVD or AK platform.
"Me. It punished me." - I felt that in my soul, Brandon. I was looking forward to getting a VEPR one day, and the gumbint dashed those dreams against the sharp rocks of reality.
Brandon’s Vepr furniture looks exactly like mine. Hence it was made by the late great Matt Schuster of Iron Wood Designs. There’s another company that made SVD wood stocks for the Vepr, but they didn’t appear as accurate as IWD’s. M
Cool to note the extra locking lug to compensate for the increased chamber pressure. I recently shot a bolt action Barrett M99 (chambered in .416 Barrett). The bolt had 8 locking lugs that I could see because if its massive chamber pressure
@@amorphoussolid8512 I fired 5 or 6 shots (at ~$8 each) and it felt...authoritative. If you think .308 makes a satisfying *DING* on steel targets, .416 Barrett is even more so. My shoulder didnt want me to fire more, but it was an experience that may lead to me eventually getting something in that caliber or bigger
Weapons design is always neat; they're all fascinating IMHO. Swords, pikes, pistols, rifles, tank guns, naval guns, missiles, mines, bombs... So many ways we've invented to do another dirty. Very morbid of me, but weapons were basically devices for the application and focusing of energy before humans even knew what energy was. And now today have reached some truly amazing and frightening heights.
All the truly unique ways we humans have come up with to maime, dismember, disembowel and generally fuck each other up IS very interesting. I'm right there with ya on that.
I just want to say, I think that Brandon was great in "The Mummy Returns". His portrayal as the head of a secret, desert dwelling, warrior sect was an inspiration.
I absolutely love how it pans from a boom boom to him sitting in a chair with a rifle on his lap facing up looking like one those extremies videos. I love how its filmed by hand rather than tripod.

So basically Kalashnikov walked into a board room with a picture of a Garand, turned it upside down and proceeded to make one of the greatest rifles in the world
Seems like Molot no longer produces this exact model, but the current production 30-06 Vepr platform rifles have full length wooden stock, which makes them look even more like M1. They are called "ВПО-102М" if you want to google the images.

@@Big_G-999 yes exactly he is saying getting svd performance for cheaper. Svd is overpriced in America. As they are rare. My uncle has a svd. The yugo m76 is much more accurate.
Was able to get a Vepr 54r, 21" barrel from Atlantic Firearms years ago, topped it with a 6x PSO scope (civilian, 1.5m marks) and it had Manticore furniture already installed. Carrying it to a gun show is like pulling up in a Ferrari. I love it like a favorite child. Molot doesn't mess around on making beautiful, tough, well fitted rifles. I also have a 12 gauge Vepr, folding tube stock, and I don't think I could break it if I tried. I've ran it hard and put it away wet many 'a times
I picked up one of those as well, back in 2014. Also with the scope. Very pretty. I was just looking at prices on gunbroker. Let's just say, they have appreciated, lol.
The way you are excited about your work and the history behind it is what really makes me come back again and again to this channel. Wonderful Video and i'm thrilled to see some more historical breakdowns from you.
I guess not everyone knows this but Veprs are made on RPK tooling because the plant who make them were slated for making RPKs only while AK was mostly IzhMash which make civilian AKs under Saiga trademark. So Veprs are inherently thiccer, softer shooting and generally nicer weapons in calibers over x39 than Saigas.
I would love for Brandon to really one day work on a project (after the AK-50 of course) to really design and manufacture an AK for the modern day shooter. Not just furniture but features, like actual bolt hold open/release features. That would be sick to think about an AK where something as simple as never grabbing a charging handle or a faster way to insert magazines would be pretty dope. People might point to the Mutant as the thing but it's like it's just an AR with the old rock and lock magazine rather than an evolution of the AK. Hope this happens someday
@@iltonnotattico6231 again, still clunky charging handles, bolt, nothing really "new" or evolutions of the AK, you're still kinda working with a top rail... Maybe a monolithic design or something...

Thanks, Brandon, I love your firearms history lessons. If only school were this fun and they had steel targets out back, that'd be real american shit right there. 🇺🇸
Us schools tend to have shooting ranges. They even use cheap flesh target instead of steel, they don't need a dedicated room as the whole building is used for that purpose
The review of the historical footprint of the AK was appreciated. I always thought the Soviets just copied the German rifle, but I see where the Garand mechanisms come into play. To me, that just makes the Garand that much more of the Mack Daddy of all military rifles. Massive respect to all American servicemen who carried and used them in battle.
AK is still just copied from an American weapon and a German weapon, IMO. The Russians have a two habits. 1) copy other people or 2) Make it absolutely, ridiculously huge
@@jasskeeper8152 Well, it's fact that the gas and operating system are scaled down clones of the M1 Garand. I don't think that part is in dispute at all. And it's pretty apparent that the overall form and shape of the AK is closely based on the STG-44. You tell anyone to scale down the Garand operating system into an intermediate cartridge, full auto capable rifle, and you'll get the AK every time.
The Zastava M76 is basically an AK chambered in 8mm Mauser. Pretty much equal to or even more powerful than .30-06, depending on what kinds of loads you're comparing.
At 0:49 seconds it kinda looks like the casing does has a conniption wanting to stay and go because it sits there just kinda spinning before the bolt closes.
We need to end all the destruction parts of gun buybacks. If people wanna get rid of their guns, give them to responsible owners. Not people who are gonna just destroy these pieces of art!

Not me lol I knew instantly what gun would be showcased by the name of the title cause he said he would do a video on it in a previous video during one of his ak 50 updates 😂 if you were paying attention
My Uncle carried an M1 Garand in WW2. When he returned home to N.H. he always hunted deer with a 30-06. It certainly killed an 80 pound whitetail real dead! My cousins would make fun of my 30-30 , but my deer seemed to be just as dead.
8:39 Is that a Valmet on your gun wall? If so, how does it compare to the other AK variants you own? It certainly looks like one, with the position and shape of the iron sights and the three-pronged flash suppressor.
There's Also the SVDK chambered in 9.3x64mm! As someone who has hunted Deer, Bear and Elk with the less powerful 9.3x62, the 9.3x64 would be monster. Basically, The equivalent of the .375 H&H but with bullets with sometimes better SD and BC.
Thank you Brandon for another fantastic video! Of course, like so many others, I was a little disappointed at first, but I got over it very quickly because your videos are the best when it comes to how these firearms actually work!!! I will see you on the next great video because you NEVER disappoint!!!
Not sure if you'll see this. BUT I figured I'd mention according to one of the designers I used to talk with at Molot, that these were supposed to have a larger ejection port with a telescoping dust cover like the Vepr-54r and the 12 gauge had. Which is why the .30-06 has kinda lousy ejection.. We did make a 30 round magazine, we have been out of them for over a year. They are difficult to make because of the length, the center welds are hard to get to, and it required a lot of fixturing to keep them straight during welding.

In Germany you could germany you could get a civilian version by Izmash called Tigr 9.

There's something beautiful about the AK bolt system returning to it's grandfather cartridge
It'd be really interesting to see one in .276 Pedersen.
Now let's have the rest of the rifle return to *it's* grandfather's cartridge. 😉
That wood furniture is so beautiful. Thanks for teaching us about other AK variants and firearm history.
Brandon’s Vepr furniture looks exactly like mine. Hence it was made by the late great Matt Schuster of Iron Wood Designs. There’s another company that made SVD wood stocks for the Vepr, but they didn’t appear as accurate as IWD’s. M
Yeah, huge glow up from the original furniture
Love that sound, anyone who doesn't? every time you fire an M1 you look forward to that. Thanks for showing how they are so similar.
Cool to note the extra locking lug to compensate for the increased chamber pressure. I recently shot a bolt action Barrett M99 (chambered in .416 Barrett). The bolt had 8 locking lugs that I could see because if its massive chamber pressure
Holy crap! That's my dream rifle and chambering! How was it? Did you get to stretch it's legs?

@@oxide9679in your opinion not the fact that have been provided and studied by brandon \'-'/
@@oxide9679 The AK is very VERY loosely based on the STG-44. It was more so based after the AS-44
Just 1 little thing. The M1 was originally created by John C. Garand a Canadian firearms engineer. The rifle was adopted for use by the USA
The Zastava M76 is basically an AK chambered in 8mm Mauser. Pretty much equal to or even more powerful than .30-06, depending on what kinds of loads you're comparing.

We need to end all the destruction parts of gun buybacks. If people wanna get rid of their guns, give them to responsible owners. Not people who are gonna just destroy these pieces of art!
so resell them at an auction, use profit to enforce more effective personal checks
Well that sounds like selling them but with extra steps.

The biggest ak ever produced. And Brandon Herrera took that personally.
If Tarkov has taught me a thing or two, it's that the 7.62x51 version is a great scav gun.
