    Gentlemen, THIS is one of the happiest accidents in RUclips history haha. Ne Obliviscaris is a relatively obscure progressive metal band. They're one of my favorites. Never thought you would ever listen to this band, much less LIKE it! Shout out to whoever requested this and shout out to you guys for taking a risk on it! Just in case you're interested, the album this song is from (Portal of the I) is their debut and most people's favorite. Their sophomore album Citadel is absolutely fantastic in its own right. AWESOME PROG!!! Their new album from this year is called Urn. It's also excellent!!--but you may want to listen to them in order. BTW, the violinist is Tim Charles and he also does the clean vocals. Hope you guys enjoy this incredible band!!!!!

    Hell yessss !!! You did Ne Obliviscaris !!! You just took your heads and bodies outside the box man. What a great band and song to react ! And you gave them what they deserved, you were just on point ! Do you see why we, some metalheads act like elitist assholes now :)) ? When you hear a beauty like this, a band from Australia taking what Opeth from Sweden did to to the highest levels we just get addicted and that's why we have nothing to get from Slipknot etc... But only respect as the whole music scene around the world no matter what genre ;) You were already two super stars among the metal community around the world and by doing this reaction, your place is in a much more safer place from now on ;) Always respected what you did and please keep doing this forever. Love and respect and salute you guys !!!

      I love Ne Obliviscaris, and I appreciate how skilled they are. True masters. Though listening to them does not make me think any less of Slipknot, because I fucking love them too. It doesn’t make me think “oh, this makes Slipknots music instantly shit now, and I can’t like Slipknot after listening to this”. Both are awesome in my eyes.

    • @altanulu4289
      @altanulu4289 7 лет назад +1

      MasterZoro Of course! You have your own point and reasons to enjoy Slipknot and think they're awesome. And that is the way it should be honestly. Getting into one excellent band doesn't make others garbage at once, it's nonesense. I was trying to make sense as why some of us can't get what we need from some other over commercialised nu metal bands such as Slipknot. Of course they are doing great at their own area. But when you wide open your eyes and your mind to the galaxy of music you find so many unique and perfect bands which they deserve more than they get. Especially when you make your way to the prog/melo death/black scene, mainstream begins to suck. You know what I mean my friend...

    I love that you guys went with something not highly requested! I'd never heard of these guys, but I'm really into it. But seeing how you've reacted to this, you really, REALLY need to check out some Opeth. I'd say Ghost of Perdition or Reverie/Harlequin Forest (I'm a broken record). It's not just like this, but they've got a similar vibe, and I'd bet that Ne Obliviscaris are huge fans of Opeth. You will love the melodies and seamless transitions. Seriously, Opeth is prog metal exactly in this vein.
    Also Oblivion by Mastodon.

    • @DGTL_MRKT
      @DGTL_MRKT 7 лет назад

      I left a comment reprimanding them for not doing Opeth yet and also using Twitter to ask what RUclipsrs want. Please find it and give it a like, maybe we can finally get these dudes to listen to Opeth. The idea is to get LIVegas to listen to the heavy shit, and then let them hear Damnation. The song that I think represents Opeth's progressive music as well as Opeth's progression as a band is the song "Heir Apparent." The song is off of the last album that they growled on before completely changing sounds again. Cheers!

    • @DGTL_MRKT
      @DGTL_MRKT 7 лет назад

      @ProfKaos I know, I know... but I've tried the nice way numerous times. On almost every video I watch, even the country ones, I've liked all the comments that said Opeth and tried to create conversations in the comments to drum up interest. I don't participate with the Twits so RUclips is where I voice my opinion, and unfortunately it seems they are paying more attention to the Twits than their RUclips Comment section. Sometimes you have to stand up and have passion before your voice gets heard. If I have to try harder to get my voice heard on RUclips than on Twitter than so be it.

    • @JLandroid
      @JLandroid 7 лет назад

      I want them to listen to Opeth, but reprimanding seems a bit much, lol. Love the passion though. I love Heir Apparent, but I still fell like select songs from Ghost Reveries are the best introduction.

      A little Swedish band, Cemetary, was the one that finally sold me on the growled vocals back in 1991 or 1992, with the album "An Evil Shade of Grey" - that was a nice combination of folk-style melodies and a softer, hissed or whispered style of harsh vocals that sold me. Maybe all of us have that one album or band that finally convinces us of the growled vocals?

  • @al3exify
    @al3exify 7 лет назад +36

    I can't belive you actually hold off the popularity polls once. And ooh my god was I pleasantly surprised to see NeO. It's so much better to react to something that's new and unpopular but good at the same time. It's so much better because it's not only the guys, who know and like the song watching your reaction, you also have the people who are into this kind of sound but never heard it until now. And since it's not that popular, majority of the people won't know it hence more valuable to them too. They will share your reaction and your experience for the first time so to say. It's really interesting to see you dwell into the prog world. I haven't seen you react to one of the big names in prog Steven Wilson. Anesthetize is a great song by Porcupine Tree (the band began as a solo project for Steven Wilson) that would be enough for you to grasp the beauty of the genre. The song is a bit long but you already reacted to some long songs so you must be getting used to how that plays out (like Ryan said you need to learn to appreciate the patience). If you want something less popular and weird, I suggest Diablo Swing Orchestra - Justice for Saint Mary. The last 2 minutes of the song are insane.

    Wow I'm pleasantly surprised to see Ne Obliviscaris featured on here. I've been following them since they dropped their first album and I just saw them live a few weeks ago. And like everyone else is saying, Opeth should be next, especially after this. Bands like NeO take a lot of inspiration from them. Bleak is probably the best song to start with. You might find Ghost of Perdition a bit too chaotic if you're not used to their style.
    If you're not sick of prog metal after that, I really recommend giving Dream Theater another chance. Metropolis is a really busy song; you should check out Home, Constant Motion, or Pull Me Under for something slightly more accessible.

    • @RooneyTheGreat
      @RooneyTheGreat 7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, it was great to see they enjoyed the song. And not only that, I think they are really understanding the essence of this music. For example, the fact that they are learning to be patient with the music and the fact that they feel like being transported to another abstract place in their minds, is a very satisfying thing. I think the discussion around 12:00 is a very valuable musical insight they are getting at.
      I would like them to hear Ghost of Perdition, but also I'm not that sure. I got a little disappointed from the fact they didn't really like Metropolis Pt 1, it broke a little bit my prog heart xD But now I see it was just too much, it may be really an overwhelming song for a lot of people. I just really hope they enjoy Opeth if they chose to listen to them. It's a great band with great music.

      Of course not, the genre itself just happens to blend extremely well with classical instrumentation, as it does with Jazz, and several types of orchestral music. The growls will grow on you overtime. Once you find a band (like Gojira or Ne Obliviscaris for instance) that you become hooked on, you get to the point where you would be disappointed if the growls weren't there.
    When I started listening to metal, I barely listened to any growling bands so to speak. I was in the same boat as you guys are. I would come across a band I liked but the growls always bothered me. I was like that until I discovered Opeth. Opeth changed my musical tastes forever. I was so intrigued by the musicianship of that band and because of that, the growls didn't bother me anymore. Now I personally enjoy the growling vocals and I've been able to broaden my taste in metal because of it.
    You guys NEED to react to Opeth. It's been highly requested, specifically Ghost Of Perdition.

    • @Bmetalful
      @Bmetalful 7 лет назад +1

      Lurch Murphy I disagree. The growls eventually become tolerable but there are a ton of bands/songs that insist on having growling even if it's not necessary. This song is a perfect example of a song where the screaming was totally unnecessary. Professional heavy bands like Opeth is a good balance of vocals and some black metal bands warrant the constant screeching. But for the most part there are a lot of great songs ruined by shitty vocals. For instance, Epica has some beautiful music but their male cookie monster makes most of their stuff unlistenable for me.
      Look at bands like Slayer. The vocals are very aggressive and devious, yet you can still understand him and he's not an ear sore. Even Slipknot is very good at mixing up the vocals styles to keep it balanced. I'm so sick of great metal songs being ruined by overweight idiots that think that expressing their emotions through making puke sounds into the mic is something that anyone wants to hear.

    • @nukenfry
      @nukenfry 7 лет назад +2

      RazzorBlade Their harsh vocalist has amazing command over his gutturals. I don't find it unnecessary. They wish to include death metal, some of the rawest elements, into their tapestry. I see no issue with this as long as it works.

    • @skeletankmcgraw7343
      @skeletankmcgraw7343 7 лет назад

      I vouch for this take on the growling vocals as well. I had the same story when first getting into metal, I absolutely hated them, but once I got really into the sound of one or two key bands that used them I later came to appreciate them and couldn't picture those songs without the growls. Also, once you get accustomed to harsh (growling) vocals you will start to notice the differences and nuances of them and see they aren't just skill less "screaming". You will also be able to differentiate harsh vocals that aren't well done at all even. Probably the best way to get into harsh vocals is find a band you love the music of that uses both clean (regular) and harsh vocals. I guess this band could be the one actually. Ne Obliviscaris is a great band and this first album is still probably my favorite of theirs; although, I haven't had too much time to delve into the new album they just came out with.

    "Metal told me patience" - one of the best ways to describe how metal works in my opinion.
    For me, Metal is waiting for the good part of the song, like a great breakdown, solo, hard riff, drum part, whatever...most of my alltime favorites like old sepultura (schizophrenia, beneath the remains, arise) just to mention my roots in this genre, are not easy to digest, but when a song is like "building" 3 minutes and then that epic solo comes in, it just kicks in much harder in my opinion as listening to a "good song in its totality" which might have as good solos and breakdowns, but they just dont hit as hard.
    Lets take master of puppets from metallica, i dont like the vocals there at all and it took me like forever to fully appreciate this song, but now i love it - pretty sure forever - nevertheless ive heard the song like 1000times plus... that epic solo and melodic part makes it worth waiting and even enjoying every second of the beginning, knowing what to come. These kind of songs stick much longer than "catchy songs"... this might end up different for everyone in each genre of course.

    From a theory perspective, one of the reasons this song might feel different to a lot of music you're more familiar with is that it's written mostly in a 6/8 or 3/4 time signature, where the majority of modern music is written in straight 4/4. This might help explain the elegant dance-like feel, since 3/4 is the timing we see in Waltzes and other traditional dances often played on violin and other string instruments. Opeth often use this same type of rhythm in their music, though they tend to change it up a lot more.

      metal is mostly 4/4, but megadeth, dream theater, black sabbath, and other prog bands usually have songs with more time signatures in it. Five magics has 3/4, 4/4, 5/8, set the world on fire is 6/8, dream theater has all of those and a bunch of weird ass time signatures, but since every other genre these days is 4/4, metal tops anyways XD

    Thank you so much for doing NeO and giving them more coverage! These guys are artists and deserve to be known to a bigger audience. Their unique mixture always gives me goosebumps and surprise me every single time I hear it, even though I listened to every song a few dozen times already. I am so glad you enjoyed one of my favourite bands!
    Now, next, While We Sleep from Insomnium! :)

    I also REALLY want you to give Opeth a try so give "Bleak"(9min)(soft, heavy, complex, beautiful, just great and it shows the bands full potential imo) or "Blackwater Park"(13min)(heavy then soft than HEAAAAVYER).
    I chose these two because I think that those are the ones where Mikael Åkerfeldt's grauls are at their finest and beast utilized.

    Man this is a great song, never heard of them before! Instant playlist as George would say!
    You are ready for Opeth gentlemen. Reverie/Harlequin Forest is a MUST. The Drapery Falls, Blackwater Park or The Night and the Silent Water are also musts. Really any Opeth song is good, I have a feeling you will end up picking Ghost of Perdition since its hands down the highest requested song, rightfully so, its great!
    I'm truly happy every time I watch a new video of yours to see the huge Opeth backing in the comments, my favorite band, met them twice, great, great guys.
    I think its worth mentioning, about 8 years ago they changed their sound, they have 3 new albums that are all clean singing. The music is similar, but not quite the same as what they started as. Each album was an evolution for the band and they finally broke out of the 'metal' mold and went straight prog rock and its amazing! I miss the old Opeth as much as the next fan, but I really appreciate their desire to pursue their passion and continue to make great music that doesn't ever get boring. Thanks for reading if you got this far.

    Whats great about this channel is that watching these guys react to things for the first time brings you back to the time you first heard these songs too, and the reaction is the same. It's great that these guys come from a different backround but are still open minded and have an ear for music. Fair play.

      superma415 Yea. Neither suggestion is strictly metal, but fuck it. They're different and have more than enough in them to spark discussion. Might have to suggest other TMV songs because Cicatriz has the long middle section ambience.

      It would be so interesting to see how they react to Igorrr cuz its ... special to say the least. The Mars Volta is a must they just need to react to one of their songs in the future. I'm sure they'll love it too.

      I can agree it's a better song because Blackwater is just a phenomenal album(Still Life is still my favorite) but Ghost of Perdition is probably the best in my opinion to start on with Opeth because of Accessibility..

    MASTODON. DUDES. MAS. TO. DON. They are up for a grammy, won "Best Metal Album of the Year" from BangerTV's ( a huge metal channel that covers all the obscure stuff ) head editor (who invented the end-all-be-all chart of metal history), and are one of the only bands I know of who have NEVER released a bad album. Seriously, not even one. As a christmas gift to me (and yourselves) listen to this band. Listen to Roots Remain or literally ANYTHING and you'll thank me. I've been with you guys since the beginning and I feel like were friends now. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if you didn't listen to Mastodon in 2017.
    P.S. You guys are right on with NeObliviscaris, they are incredible and represent the wave of technical metal bands that are evolving and improving every day. Compared to even 10 years ago were lightyears away from the place metal was then in terms of skill and musical mastery.

      Keegan Carruthers I was thinking the same thing! Mastodon are on another level when they get more emotional with their songs. Roots remain, Ancient kingdom, crack the skye, the last baron, swallow, you can go on. Love them 🤘🤘

    • @butterlettuss4958
      @butterlettuss4958 7 лет назад

      I know what you mean about Opeth being prog (as obviously they are). But they aren't at the same level of experimentation as NeO if you ask me. Opeth does harsh and clean vocals, but usually not harmonized (Mikael can't do both simultaneously!) also they don't have the same expansive sound that this band is putting out. To me this hits a lot closer to an even more experimental Devin Townsend Project than it is comparable to Opeth. That being said, I'm no expert and music is 100% a subjective experience.

    The violinist is also the guy doing the clean vocals! I absolutely love the first half of the song, but I struggle to wrap my head around the second half. The breakdown is cool at first, but I feel it drags on a bit too long and I just get lost. Like, what happened to the gorgeous first part? Maybe it will just take me more listens and it'll click, who knows.
    Fun fact: This song was added to an Australian college in Sydney's music studies course as an "exemplar in structure, mixing timbres, meters, modes, how to approach virtuosity, sound and noise, extended performance and techniques". So you know these guys got songwriting chops.
    May I suggest Avantasia - Let the Storm Descend Upon You? Avantasia is a rock opera project where Tobias Sammet, the mastermind, brings together different singers and musicians for every album, with every singer playing a different character in the story. In this song it trades off between 4 singers.

      TheCrazyCanuck420 clean vocals are the opposite of harsh vocals. harsh vocals are the screaming, growling, squealing, stereotypical "death metal" vocals. clean vocals are normal singing.
