    I understand non metal people focus more on the vocals because popular music is mostly vocals based. But in metal it's just another instrument, which comes together with all the other layers.

      You put this nicely: yeah the growl always hits people at first like it's a comedy piece,but it's another tone that adds to it all. Meshuggah for instance- some pop singing over it would not make sense. It's the wrong sound. Same as with Buddhist chanting. Pop singing would sound out of place entirely. I always thought isis were a great psychological key for the cookie monster vocals, their lyrics almost don't matter, the voice is just obviously another tone in the musical mix

  • @TheSadSadBanana

    One important note I'd like to make is that music that is based on Groove is more or less meant to be played at a party or a club as a background filler to make you move (not always) but music like this song is based on Harmony; Chord progressions, Transitions, Dynamics, etc. Songs that are based on harmonies like this one is more or less meant to be listened to with headphones, sitting down and just taking in the song for what it is. That's an important distinction to make when you're listening to these more "experimental" songs that drag on, it's supposed to make a bigger picture by itself, you don't need to watch a play and have it in the background, the music IS the soundtrack to the play that unfolds in your imagination.

    • @fyodorkaramazov2136
      @fyodorkaramazov2136 6 лет назад +1

      My point exactly.
      When he said "if this playing in the background I think this is awesome for that" there is the beginning of an understanding, you can just see it as the OST of your life. (Not a surprise if a lot of metalheads like movies or video games OST music too)
      Then with that "the song is very long for the sake of being long" I thought "Who cares ? I never listen an Opeth song out of its album anyway"
      Music is not necessarily made to dance, or to fit on radio playlists, or on your personal shuffled playlist...
      Metal is not made to make girls dance, and help guys getting laid, it's made for dudes who enjoy listening full albums all day (and going dead drunk to live shows).

    Props. As an Opeth fan, that's exactly the kind of reaction I'd expect from an honest objective first listen. Each song is like a mini opera and can be a bit much at times. Check out Mastodon "Oblivion." They have 3 vocalists and the song (whole album, really) has this cool kind of classic rock vibe mixed with modern riffs... and no guttural vocals! Also, I know you're gonna jump back on some Gojira. "L'Enfant Sauvage" Even if you can't show us the official music video, you should check it out for yourselves. Dark, heavy, fast, rad. They will not disappoint.

    Man, I remember when I first got into the growling vocals. It took a long time, but the best way for me to describe it is, and I hope this makes sense, try thinking about it like it's just another instrument meant to accompany the piece. It's meant to set that darker, fiercer, and harsher tone in a way that standard singing just can't. At least that's the way that made it a lot easier for me to get into it. Anyway, another great reaction guys!

    • @uoabigaillevey
      @uoabigaillevey 6 лет назад +1

      I only recently got into the more growling lyrics within the past year. Granted, I was already familiar with them through 80's bands like Possessed, Cyclone, Slayer, etc.. but I had not transitioned to the harsher growls until I stopped trying to process the gutterals as a sung lyric and instead processed them as an additional played instrument. Once the 'feel' of the song has been defined, then I can go back and learn the lyrics within the gutteral to better appreciate the mix. :)

      I got into the screaming, growling when I started realising what it is and how difficult it is to make those growls. It's the best way to release anger and sadness in my opinion, but also a way to show a dark, huge sound that normal singing cannot do. It's such a great asset to have if you're a metal vocalist in my opinion. It took me maybe a year of my girlfriend playing a lot of metalcore, death core, death metal, and progressive metal for me to actually appreciate the growls and screams.

  • @annatar2619

  • @thebluriam
    @thebluriam 6 лет назад +95

    YES! Finally! You guys hit the nail on the head with the interpretation pretty much. The song is meant to have acts because every song in that album is a part of a larger story.
    The emotional roller coaster you felt is there musically because those are the emotions that the main character is feeling, the highs and lows; that's' kind of the point of old(ish) Opeth, and why they're amazing! Their newest stuff is more palatable for most listeners, shorter songs, no growling, less transitions, etc.

    I think the problem is, the majority of people suggesting songs are mega-fans of those bands - and they are suggesting songs THEY like, but not necessarily the best song to expose a newcomer to. People need to suggest stuff that's the most accessible first. I don't think this is Opeth's most accessible. Here is the problem with giving a first impression of a progressive type of song - there is no way it can "click" in your brain the first time. I don't LOVE hardly any progessive metal song the very first time I hear it. Instead the song has to sink in time after time, intil finally it "clicks" and makes perfect sense to your brain. Here is the beauty of it though. Once that happens you don't get sick of the song like you do normal/cookie cutter songs. That's why I can put on the Blackwater Park album any time and not be sick of it.
    So cool that you guys listened to this and to be honest I'm shocked you didn't hate it the first time hearing it!

      Gonna challenge you there. Opeth has such strong songwriting that more people can get into them as opposed to most extreme music. The dynamics, shading and overall musicality bring in more people who normally wouldn't listen to extreme music. I've been following them since the second record, and I remember when Blackwater Park came out, I was in university for music and showed it to some of my professors...they were all blown away...and remarked how a band like that shouldn't be able to do what they do.

    • @ferox965

      JWolf013 in all honesty, in my opinion, Opeth lays these bands to waste. The musicianship is top shelf, with a ton of emotion as well. To me, some of the best songwriting in decades...they still haven't put out a bad one. I got hooked from the second album (not easy, all their albums were expensive imports at the time) and loved them ever since. You always find something new as you revisit each album. Cheers from Canada

    I heard of Opeth when I was still in high school, but I never gave them a chance. I was too new into metal to appreciate growl-vocals, so I wrote them off.
    But (having already been subscribed to you because of your rap videos) when you posted this video, many years ago - but still much later than my high school years, I fell in love with the band.
    It's especially ironic, since you guys didn't really like this song.
    Now, many years later, they're - by far - my favorite band of all time, and I've seen them multiple times, and I own many T-shirts.
    Thanks, fellas.

    What I love about your videos is that you guys make me think about it from an outsiders perspective. I already knew and loved opeth, so the style and up and down was "normal to me. This album is a sort of concept album and if you two are feeling adventurous check out the whole album. I think of it more like watching a movie, characters, action, and emotions. The up and down feels less forced and more like story telling. Could be a brand new experience. As for the growling vocals, try to think of it more like another instrument, casting shadows and light on the traditional instrumentation. The vocals are more moody and powerful when framed this way. Keep trying new stuff, tho. Peace.

      random danny I think that they would probably like something from blackwater park better. The harvest has softer vocals throughout and more of a traditional verse/chorus/verse/chorus type of writing format. I also think that something like the drapery falls that starts with somewhat softer and transitions into heavier riffs and vocals in a more linear way may be more suitable to their taste.

    George and Ryan, as a listener of Prog Rock/Metal for 40 years, these songs need to be heard a few times to REALLY get into. The first listen is almost always more rough because the changes in Prog songs are always numerous and can seem like they ruin the "flow" of the song, but when you really KNOW the song and come to expect the changes, the song (if written well) will flow beautifully and "make sense". One of the best earlier examples are songs like "Roundabout" by Yes and "2112" by Rush.

    WARNING LONG REPLY
    Listening to Opeth (and prog metal in general most of the time) is a different type of listening than you regularly do for music. Usually you just want to enjoy the music you listen to, grooving along. With this type of music listening becomes more of an activity in itself. It's almost like you're studying, trying to constantly wrap your head around what crazy transition they did this time and the epic lyricism. You're watching a play unfold with different movements etc. It's not necessarily made to headbang to. I also have to tell you that this is the first song of the album Ghost Reveries, a concept album with an overarching story throughout it (except for the final song), so in that sense it's even more like a play. A story is being told. I'm often in my head so this is great music for me, but if you prefer to groove and just enjoy the music this is probably not for you. Unless, like you said, it's a very specific situation. If you feel like cracking your head open and you're up for a challenging listen, prog metal is the way to go (listen to the rest of the album!).
    Now that you listened to Opeth, Dream Theater and Tool, you have a solid grasp of what the genre is about. I like to call those three bands the three "cornerstones of prog metal". Opeth for the extreme metal with soft passages thrown in (where NeO got their sound from!), Dream Theater for the "regular" metal sound with flashy solos and Tool (even though they're not actually metal) for the rhythmic and emotionally intense aspects of the music. Most modern prog bands have (at least) one of these three bands as one of their main influences. They're HUGE in the prog metal scene. There are other prog bands with big influences like Meshuggah (djent movement started with them), Animals as Leaders (instrumental prog), Between the Buried and Me (prog metalcore with even more transitions than Dream Theater), Porcupine Tree (prog rock/metal borderline) and Mastodon (sludge/stoner prog), but the three I mentioned before are probably the biggest of the bunch with the most influences.
    Now you probably just want to rock out (and not think too much! Opeth can take their toll lol). I HIGHLY suggest you listen to some power metal now, which is like the middle ground between Maiden and Metallica/Megadeth. Try [Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings] or [Crimson Glory - Eternal Worlds] (Red Sharks is also a great pick!). I'd also like to suggest Symphony X, but that's more prog power a la Dream Theater (less wank though and more headbanging) so I'll hold that off for now.
    Love your channel guys. Keep rocking!

      @pietrayday9915 6 лет назад +8

      As much as I love Prog and Avant-Garde rock and metal, I think that expecting a positive reaction from an "outsider" to the style of music is just unrealistic - the musicians and fans of Prog and Avant-Garde kind of pride themselves on how alien their music is compared to popular music - in effect, Prog and Avant-Garde can be thought of as running on on how deliberately off-putting and jarring the music can be to casual listeners, and on seeing and bringing out the beauty in things that don't fit into the popular music mold.
      Most people are well used to more popular forms of music, with an ear tuned toward it, and it takes a little while to develop a musical palate tuned toward the sort of discordant chords, strange rhythmic patterns, something other than the usual pop-music verse-chorus song structure found in Prog or Avant-Garde. Nobody can expect someone used to popular music to embrace a rather dramatically anti-popular form of music overnight.
      That's not to say that George and Ryan shouldn't keep trying these Prog metal songs, I remember those moments when the weird stuff that bands like Celtic Frost or Voivod were doing finally "clicked", and I stopped thinking "that sounds like noise", and started thinking "wow, they actually used noise as music, and made it work - how did they do that?"
      I also think it's fair to say that there are a fair number of Prog and Avant-Garde emperors who aren't wearing any clothing - I appreciate the rare outside voice that's willing to say "I'm perfectly happy to give this a chance, but I really don't think that this band is wearing clothes, and someone's pulling our leg!" I think that sort of honesty can only be expected from someone who's not familiar with this sort of music, or someone who has really been listening to it a long time, and thoroughly understands musical theory and rules and how and when to bend or break them, and so on... for the rest of us, I think it can sometimes be hard to tell the difference between genuine brilliance, and a really shiny shovel-full of B.S.....

      I listen to prog metal and I never liked most of the bands you listed. And it's not like I didn't give them a chance. Bands like Opeth, Dream Theater, Mastodon... they have good ideas, but I feel as if they can't properly combine them into songs. They are also in a way do what's expected from prog metal, I'm not surprised by their music, from avant-garde and prog stuff, I want music that makes me wonder how did they even begin composing something like that. Compositions that are alien and weird. And also I agree with Ryan and George about transitions and song length. The transitions sound forced, and the songs feel as if they are really long for the sake of being long. There are bands out there with more transitions and bands with longer songs, but they make it work. Stuff like Opeth and Dream Theater, when I listen to them I just hear a mishmash of cool ideas and not so cool ideas in stitched together in whatever way.

      I do feel a bit bad that we're leaving these poor fellows to try to figure out lyrics written by foreign bands in garbled English - one of the exciting things I discovered about international metal bands is that there is some amazing music there, and some fascinating influences from different cultures that put a whole new spin on the basic Metal formula, but about half the time, the lyrics are just impenetrable at best, as seen with Brazil's Sepultura a couple weeks ago! :D
      I think a lot of us just tune the lyrics out and listen for the music, with the death growls and other vocals taking on a percussive, rhythmic, or melodic element appreciated separately from the lyrics themselves....

    Thanks for listening to this.
    1. This is headphone music. This is something not something to casually listen to.
    2. It’s not something you’re gonna get the first time. It’s a concept album, so the entire album has an underlying story. So the changes are really setting the vibe as to what is occurring in the story (like a play soundtrack... literally...good looks).
    3. I’ve always thought (even though I’m a huge fan) that Opeth would stick around on certain parts too long. As musician, I’ve always noticed that they “felt” they had to do each part 4 complete times, which can drag shit out unnecessarily for what seems like an eternity. Especially when it’s an 8-bar riff as-is. I think this was more of a crutch of Mikael’s writing than anything. However, parts like the acoustic breaks really suit well for the longer arrangements.
    4. This is literally the band that got me into dirty vocals. The way they contrast/compliment the musicality of the band really play on your ear differently than other groups do. It’s just intensity. It’s not anger or aggression or a crutch... it’s used intentionally. Because he clearly has an amazing voice.
    The next track I highly recommend you check out by them is Windowpane, from Damnation. No growling, no distorted guitars. Completely clean.

    Dude, Opeth is an impossible band to digest as a first listen. I'm a die hard metal fan, but I made the mistake years ago to just casually try and get into them and I was like "nope". This kind of progressive music needs like a predisposition. It's not something you necessarily headbang to, but listen to when you're in the right mindset, which is kind of meditative, chill (the irony) and like, focused, like you're in the mood to fly with a song, not party to it. I make no sense. For example, I paint, so I like to listen to this because it just kind of goes with that flow state of being focused, so you fly with the song. It's the trippiest feeling. Like being high without drugs. But takes sooooo long to "get" it. The mind just gets hooked and desires to go back to it. It's worth it in the end! You get used to it and enjoy it just as much as any other popular song. It's the weirdest thing.
    ANYWAY.
    GUYYYSSSSSS you know what I'm gonna say! Epica - The Holographic Principle or Kingdom of Heaven PART 1. If you think you need the right thing to get into metal growling (not screamo haha), check these songs out! Growling, operatic vocals, pop vocals, big ass choirs, Kingdom of Heaven even has some freakin tibetan throat singing. Like seriously, I ASSURE you, you haven't listened to this kind of metal yet.
    I have many other suggestions but goddamnit, I won't give up until you react to them!
    Also omg 182K!!! Insane!! Congrats!! ♥

      This 100%. I didnt get into Periphery, Meshuggah, and Gojira until this year because of my original distaste for heavy vocals. My transition started a long time ago. My first albums were Breaking Benjamin and As I Lay Dying, but I never listened to AILD's songs that were strictly screaming. I needed the conflict of heavy verses and the resulution of clean, powerful, and soaring refrains. Eventually, I began to enjoy the brutality. That was about 8 years ago. I tried listening to other bands in heavier forms of metal, but couldnt do it as the vocals were too much for me. This past year was my first experience with the brutality and complexity with prog metal. And I have never been happier.

      You kidding? I came in to these guys early in their career, and I got into them just fine. I'm talking before Blackwater Park. I had a feeling when you guys finally got to this song that you would respect it but wouldn't totally be your taste. I still love that you gave this an open minded shot (free thinkers after all), and I have more respect for ya than ever. For a newer shot of prog metal I recommend "The Last Baron" from Mastodon, or even their song "Blood and Thunder" which is also amazing. Also, I would recommend you check out Periphery starting with their song "Scarlet" and if you like that try out some more. That's all I will ramble about for now. Keep up the excellent work. #freethinkers

      The Last Baron is my favourite song from Crack the Skye, but I'm worried that it might be too proggy for them still, maybe something slightly less proggy from Mastodon though.

      Periphery doesn't have a song called Crimson. I think you're thinking of Scarlet.
      Also, if you're gonna suggest they do Periphery, you'll need to make sure they start with a song that grooves so they're more likely to get into it. I'd recommend Icarus Lives, 22 Faces, or Pale Aura.

    The first time i listened to Opeth i thought they were boring and that it was just not for me, 3 years later Opeth is my favorite band and Ghost Of Perdition is definately one of my favorite songs by them. For me it has always been that the best music takes time to understand, so I think after you really know every second of this song well your gonna love it. And also the growling in Opeth´s music is some of the best out there, there are not many singers who can make that awesome evil sounding growling like Mikael, and that mixed with his beautiful cleans just make Opeth the perfect band for me.

      Haha, it did not take 3 years for me to like them, i liked Opeth after my 3rd or 4th listen and the only reason I kept on listening was because i heard from everyone how good they were. And after everytime i listened to them i liked them a little more and then eventually I fell in love with their music.

      Demonkiller123 I totally agree! I'm a big Opeth fan but I understand and accept Ryan and George's opinion. And you're right on about Nightwish, Helloween, and Eluveitie. I would also suggest songs from Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica, Nevermore, Sabaton, Redemption, Fates Warning, Queensryche, even "Pull Me Under" from Dream Theater before going into the more growl vocals and many transitions heavy part of metal. That takes a while before you develop a taste for it.

    • @mordraug
      @mordraug 6 лет назад +1

      Exactly David. A lot of Metalheads may have done a mistake I think,when they threw Extreme Metal on them,even while they liked some of it and were super open minded,you could see that they did not like it that much.Apart from Gojira or Ne Obliviscaris that is. I get it...you wanna see them react to your favourite band or what,but you need to remember that they have not listened to Metal that much,especially to Extreme Metal,their hearing of Metal is not yet that advanced,they may not get a lot of stuff that is going on,the proper unique feeling to it... It takes a lot of time to appreciate Extreme Metal and the first vital step is to firstly listen to a lot of non-Extreme Metal,cause there you get this sensitive feeling for Metal,where you will be able to distinguish and appreciate a lot of hidden stuff while listening to it.

      Demonkiller123 So on point. That was a very big mistake with those recommendations. If they couldn't really handle Slayer and the vocals from Sepultura, I doubt they would be pleased with Opeth. And you're totally right, they definitely need to listen to more non-extreme metal before trying out Opeth again or another extreme metal band. I think NWOBHM as well as power, folk and symphonic metal would be more up their alley for now. I'll admit, I wanted them to try Opeth after their reaction to NeO, but I hoped they would choose a more straightforward Opeth song like Bleak or Harvest from the Blackwater Park album or a song from their Damnation album; something with zero to little transitions and not as much growling. I think the high demand for GoP as they said in the video raised their expectations so much, and that also may have been a factor to why they were just meh about it.

    Guys, Opeth takes time. But the time pays off. It's hard to believe that the growls and the clean singing come out of the same guy. And it's mind boggling that so many musical ideas go into one song. Other bands would make 4 or 5 songs out of the different ideas. But Mikael Akerfeldt (the singer, main song writer, guitar) is in my mind the Mozart of metal. His genius becomes clearer with more listening time. And on that note, if you decide to give them another try, I'd recommend Bleak. The song again covers a lot of ground, but it's less proggy and contains some great clean vocals. Keep doing what you're doing. Love the channel!

      @leebrennan612 6 лет назад +1

      Michael Robertson well that's what I read in an interview with them some time ago. It's an interesting idea actually and you could argue that this tracks transitions are just an amplified example of what songs such as holy wars and master of puppets do by implementing a step change to change mood. The difference with opeth is that, in my opinion a great deal of thought about taking the listener on a journey and it's more about the journey than the groove..... So to speak. Sometimes there's more to listening and appreciating a piece of music than just banging ya head 😉. Metal is unique in the fact that it is so diverse and bridges such a musical chasm

      wojtek1721 I disagree. I think that most bands will have at least one song that serves as a good intro. In the case of Tool, they really should have gone with Sober or Prison Sex. In the case of Dream Theater, they should have gone with Pull Me Under.

      wojtek1721 no flames whatsoever! All nonnative speakers have my utmost respect as your English is so much better than my attempt at your language.
      That aside, you make a valid point on vocal styles, but that is just one component of music and these reactions show that these gentlemen are truly open-minded enough to appreciate each component in isolation.
      My argument is that if the songs they react to were more "approachable" for a first-time listener, the initial impression would be more positive.

      wojtek1721 yes, exactly. While the Tool and Dream Theater examples aren't the best (not every band has the benefit of a song/video getting rotation on radio/TV), I think every band has songs early in their career that are good representations of their overall body of work.
      In the case of Metallica, they started with something from the Black Album, but followed with something from Master of Puppets that was a better reflection of the band.

    If it helps with the harsh vocals, try treating them as a separate instrument and see how it blends in with the other instrumentation in the background. That usually helps most people get into it. Then you can add that extra layer of lyrics on top of it and see how it, in my opinion, meshes better with the music more than clean vocals would.
