Now one of their top 5 songs would be along the lines of “the moor, blackwater park, heir apparent, the night and the silent water, black rose immortal, to bid you farewell, demon of the fall, face of Melinda, serenity painted death, harvest, the leper affinity, bleak, masters apprentices, harlequin forest, the grand conjuration,

Blackwater Park gets more press - and I understand why, given that Bleak and the title track are two of the greatest, most perfect metal songs ever written - but Ghost Reveries, from start to finish, is just as good IMO. I don't think there's another album out there that has a better opening track listing than Ghost/Baying/Mire. Those three songs are each masterpieces, and they're arguably not even the best songs on the album.

Love that. If you've got to curate songs from albums (instead of going straight through, I'd go:

      Grand Conjuration and Harlequin Forest
      When
      The Moor and Godhead's Lament
Porcelain Heart and the Lotus Eater
      Deliverance
But really, it's almost easier to just say: "Listen to Damnation, Deliverance, Watershed, Still Life, Ghost Reveries, and Blackwater Park front to back, over and over, and throw away everything else you've ever heard." And that's before you get to their newer, proggier sound.

I'm 61 years old and this is my #1 favorite song. Previous to that, it was Kashmir by Led Zeppelin which held my top spot from 1974 to this release. I love thrash metal, yet epic songs like Kashmir and Ghost of Perdition beat them. O[eth to me isn't about steady beats. It's about a flow which could go anywhere in each song they do. Some songs like The Funeral Portrait are more steady. You should check out the studio version of Deliverance which was when Martin Lopez was the drummer, and is on the top of my list of great songs.

The first time I heard this song I was confused but most importantly intrigued. At that time I wasn’t a fan of growls period. But boy did opeth help pop that cherry for me. What I like best about Mikaels growls is that they have character. It’s not monotone, it has flavor and emotion. This piece takes about 5-10 listens to really appreciate. As with most of their music, it’s best to take small bites to savor the ingredients because large bites will overwhelm and sometimes confuse (because it’s different).

Every single Opeth album is really its own vibe. I really recommend for your own sake that you listen to their albums in their entirety, whether it be through reaction videos or just on your own. Though most of their songs are good on their own they are definitely ALL better when listening to it in the context of the album.
As I saw a wise fellow viewer comment on another video somwhere, you do not simply put on an Opeth song. You put on an Opeth album.
And looooved the reaction. Keep it up!

I genuinely fall asleep to Opeth every night lol. I have two playlists, and one has all the songs without growling and it’s super relaxing to me (I like the growling normally too, hence the other playlist). They just have that type of melody and progression that you can just let yourself fall into, and not have wandering thoughts keeping you up.

@@AlexHefner Edit:Sorry for the wall of text.
I have real trouble falling asleep unless I can get rid of distracting thoughts, and it's one of two playlists I can load to help me sleep, been using that one for at least a decade. It's rare I remember more than a couple of songs playing before I fell asleep, puts me out like a light. I think it has around 25 songs from them, and none of them having any screaming or growling, they're all pretty chill songs.
The other one is a relaxing eastern sounding album that sounds straight from a massage parlor or something lol, so more what you might expect to find if you searched for relaxing soundtracks (Daniel May--Feng Shui).
I've been listening to the Daniel May one since I was like 12, but I've been using the Opeth one for at least a decade (I still have it playing on an old iPod Classic of all things, plugged into my bedside radio). Last two nights I feel asleep to Opeth, night before the May one, kinda alternate on a whim. The last time I had insomnia without my music was complete torture, just could not keep my mind from racing.

Dude, you've come such a long way in your musical journey; it's inspiring to see! Your vocabulary to describe what you're hearing has expanded so much since your early days as purely a "hip-hop head." It's been so neat to have you share this adventure with us and watch/hear you understand the nuances, mainstays, and rule-breakers of the genre! I hope you continue to enjoy exploring and sharing!
One cool thing about Opeth is that you'll be hearing something new every time you listen to them. One listen you'll catch the vocal harmonies and be like, the fuck?! How'd I not hear that before? Next it'll be little percussion flourishes; the next, the dynamics of the guitar parts. I swear, it never gets old.
