Mikael Åkerfeldt is one of those rare musicians who only come around once in a while. His songwriting is phenomenal, every song takes you on a journey. His voice is incredible, whether growling, or singing clean. He's also pretty damn funny too. And the band itself has always had some of the absolute best musicians playing alongside him.

    • @seventhsonmedia
      @seventhsonmedia Год назад +19

To touch upon his humour: I saw Opeth in Toronto in 2009, and during a song break, he says, "Apparently Bryan Adams also comes from Toronto," and how we are all supposed to secretly love Bryan Adams. And then he plays the riff to Summer of 69 with the dumbest grin on his face as the whole crowd sang the first verse. One of the most priceless live concert moments I have ever experienced.

Oof I don't know... Harlequin Forest is probably their magnum opus of that golden era of mixture of "beauty and the beast" in my mind.
In any case, Opeth tricked me into growling too. Fisrt exposure to them was Windowpane and A Fair Judgement, which led me to listen to Damnation... Which was love at first listen.
Sure enough, Ghost Reveries came not much later and made me not only appreciate growling in time, but became what I consider their best album (even though my favourite is still Damnation), and to this day they've become one of my three dearest bands (along with Pink Floyd and Snarky Puppy xD).

Great video man! I stumbled onto this band in the most unique & bizarre way. A friends band was out on tour & they came through where I was located.
We met up at the venue prior to sound check to touch base & I happened to have some green on me so I offered.
The guys I knew didn’t feel like smoking but told me that the opening band would want to.
I walk over & offer & they say “yes!” and we blazed a couple of bowls.
I picked up on an accent & asked & they said “Sweden.”
Fast forward a few hours & I return for the show & happened to be early enough to catch the openers, from Sweden.
Holy shit! That was absolutely insane!
After the show I met back up with my friends & I mentioned how badass the openers were & one says “Mike is a genius! He’s going to take you on a journey for decades to come.
    And he was right! 💜🤘

When I discovered Opeth in around 2006, my reaction was the same!
They quickly became my favorite band and I can’t go more then 3 days without hearing one of their songs.
Your reaction was so emotionally pure, yet you still had to nerd out technically.

Went to my first Red Rocks show in October. Insane venue. Also, Opeth is an insane band, and they’ve been around since 1990, so happy hunting into their discography. My friends and I were obsessed in high school, which is when Ghost Reveries, the album this is on, came out.
If you’re looking forcanother guitarist that’ll impress you with his ability composing, Mike Stringer of Spiritbox is incredible. He can shred with the best, having been in tech metal bands in the past, but he plays to what suits the song. Watch their live in studio recording of their 3 parter “The Mara Effect,” and you’ll see what I mean about his ability to play what is needed. He also wrote and recorded all the instrumentation for their releases.

There’s some good stuff from this same show on RUclips, or, some from Royal Albert Hall show if I recall.
And yes, they’re spectacular live. I saw them in 2004 in Orlando FL and they’re were amazing. Back then they only had 6 albums under their belt. Probably my favorite live show ever. I need to see them again!

Thanks for the pick Michael!! I knew that you would love Opeth. I have seen them live a half dozen times and they are unreal. The whole Ghosts Reveries album is amazing. It's crafted like an orchestral movement the way the songs flow. I'm a bit surprised that you haven't heard of them before as they have been around since 1990. Regardless, now you know, and knowing is half the battle. They are on tour now supporting their latest album, but no US shows on their calendar at the moment. You should watch some of Mikael Åkerfeldt's RUclips videos, he is one smart dude with a rye sense of humor.

Music that I had kind of brushed off became some of my favorite of all time.
