What are your challenges with high notes?

Exactly what you mention in the video. It helps me to think of myself above the note and then landing on it, instead of reaching up to it.

My teacher of many years would say the same as you (about high notes), it's all that you're doing 'before', that makes the difference. You're a fine and committed teacher...that shows.

It goes for very low notes also. I stopped working on "Fot behold, Darkness shall cover the Earth" for a long time because the very low "upon thee" ending the legato "and his glory shall be seen upon thee" was a craps shot. I just got it last night having realized that my approach was the problem. My "divine instructor" helped me see that the "p" in "upon" was killing the support for the vocal closure when I'd do a soft "p" like you do when singing in a microphone. So I tried doing a hard "p" instead and got it every time. I also realized that this song was originally performed acoustically without a microphone (they didn't exist yet), so the hard "p" wouldn't have been an issue.

I was also struggling with the whistle note at the end of "All I want for Christmas". I can get the note on its own, but not when I yoke it into the song. My approach was wrong because I was taking a breath between "Christmas" and "is" which resulted in my using too much vocal weight on the whistle note. I realized that even though there's a dramatic riff on "Christmas" followed by a pause, that it's NOT the end of the legato. So, I started resisting the urge to take a breath there and now I'm getting the note more consistently.
