5 minutes in and the Porphis makes the BW look like the Craftsman spray gun I started with in 1976. The 717 is impressive, but, does it show signs of enduring like the Sata 3000? Edit: the BW did lay down the clear very nicely as well.
You can see that right 😂 and some folks still say the black widow won. Some people just see what they want to see. Definitely seems like a well-built gun man, only time to tell something what I can see I honestly think is something will last. I still have my Sata Jet 3000 and that's 20 years later.
What up Trigger ? I appreciate all the knowledge you drop on your channel! I have a 87 r10 lwb truck. My First time painting a vehicle. It’s my project. It has the original paint, thick peeling clear and a surface rusted roof. (Down to the metal) I have some questions to ask you. Que #1: Will 2k urethane primer-surfacer, base (single stage) black and premium high solids clear do the job or do I need a dedicated sealer primer also? Que #2: Will 1 gallon of primer with one qrt of activator be enough to spray the whole truck? Que #3: Is 6 qrts of clear / activator enough to spray the whole truck with 2-3 coats ? Que #4: Can I spray primer with a 1.3 tip? I have 1 spray gun I purchased months ago… the Black Widow HTE with rear controls. I am going to take the bed off, hood and maybe the two doors since I have to replace my rusted cab corners and rocker panels. I appreciate your feedback and thanks in advance.
#1 all of the materials there should do the job you don't need a sealer primer . #2 one gallon of primer sounds like plenty of primer you can even reduce your last coat to stretch the material and smoothen out the surface for easier sanding. #3 6 Quarts should be enough clear that gun doesn't put out an excessive amount of material so you should be ok if you want to maybe out your first coat on with the fluid knob turned in 1 extra turn just so your putting a thin coat then gauge from there and adjust the fluid out as you go. # you can spray primer the the 1.3 it will just take a lot longer to getter done open that fluid knob all the way out and turn your fan in a few turns and you should be good to go. Hope that helps and good luck on your project 👊🏼🤞🏼
Hey trigger. Great content as always. I'm going to order one of these just for something different. On the site I cant specifically which fluid tip I want. Do you get both 1.3 and 1.4 with the gun? Great paint work. Spray on brother 🤜🤛😎👍
Thanks Scot unfortunately it only come with one tip. But not sure which guns you're familiar with but this 1.3 allows me to spray with the same speed and similar results as my Lph400 with the 1.4 or even my ws400 I run a 1.4 and this gun is right there with those. People are telling me to try the 1.4 but I seriously think I would run into issues, runs, solvent pop. It all depends on your climate and materials. But hope that gives you an idea. And remember I love to paint fast. And if I'm scared to try it. That tells you something.
717 cause I looked at the specs lol 717 has that tulip tip and it uses less air . 4 split tip atomizes way better you can see it from the jump. I had to watch the clear part again ,i bet you could drop down to 24 psi on the 717 and still get a relatively flat finish . looking good .
Thank you Vegasbud, I'm going to keep playing with the gun I started out at 30 psi and slowly making my way down. But you're probably right. I'll try that on the next job 👊🏼🥊👊🏼
Would you recommend using the porphis 717 for primer/base/clear or using a separate gun for primer? If so, what porphis model would you recommend for primer
@@juanmena4676 No I wouldn't recommend you to get for primer, just get you a cheap harbor freight gun for primer. That's what we use at the shop cheap $30 guns and Just toss them after a couple years
Good joob Trigg! I saw on other channel that this porphis gun (prd 717) will lay clearcoat like glass at 1.3bar (19psi) and i'm curious if that is the case even with car pannels plus the advantage of low overspray. If you can try this on a future video ill be very grateful. Keep up the good work!
Hola buenas tardes siempre veo tus videos y me gustan mucho. Compre la pistola porphis PDR 717 Y NO LA pude regular me podría decir como regularla gracias
Hey my man. Once you put a regulator on the gun it should regulate the pressure. There is also a knob at the back of the gun that adjusts the pressure. It's the second knob on the back.
I got two black widows, the side fan control for base and rear fan control for clear, I love these two guns, now I gotta get this porphis 717, it's your fault triggerman 😁
Thank you Nick, 98% of the people live the voiceovers, but I do get the occasional miserable guy that doesn't want to hear anything but air coming out of a spray gun 😁 So I try to please everybody 😉
Hi Trigger, great head to head shootout there Mr Boss Man Sir😁as soon as this video started I thought the Porphis would be crowned the winner but I haven't seen the Black Widow apart from the reviews on here but just from the finish on the clear I think the Porphis gives a slightly better finish with a deeper flatter gloss👌loving these 👌2 guns one cup comparisons Trigga!!👏 Ok I'm off to check out your other channel bro😎🤠😂John UK
🥳🥳 thank you John yes the Porphis took the 🏆on this one. Glad you like the new series 2 guns 1 cup 😎 now we need a new challenger to go up against the Porphis 🤔
Have you tried the Fuji MP-V8 Trigger, I have 2 of them and they might be a contender against the Porphis but they are probably not as well made🤔 I couldn't find your other channel Boss, maybe you could add a link to it in the comments on your video🙏👍
Just my 2 cents, price point being much more on the Porphis, Black Widow is 152.99 this weekend, the Porphis uses quite a bit more CFM, which usually makes sense putting more paint on and smoother. Good comparison? not really, like comparing an LPH400 to anFLG5 or K4, jus' sayin'. For mid 150 the BW is a great gun.
Great video! Would you recommend a Phorpis 717 for a diyer in garage for the over sprayer? Or I can get an Iwata lph400 used from ebay? What would you be your recommendation? Both same price
If you can get an lph400 in good condition. Go with that. Man I've used my Iwata daily for over 15 years and that thing still is my go to and great with overspray.
@@thetriggerman954 thanks for getting back man! I’ll look into an LPH. Have you seen the new LPH replacement called Iwata Wider4L. They are going for same price as used LPH400s definitely worth a test 🙏🏼👍🏼
@@arvizu619 I've seen those around in don't think it's nearly as good. I'd just get the lph400 and be on the safe side. That wider4L is the same price as a used LPH for a reason.
Porphis vs Inokraft D1? That would be a great video for me to see! What Tip, pressure, sort of thing. Knowing what both guns need for setup and paint helps DIY guys like me figure it out.
Those are 2 different animals. One is HVLP one is LVLP I try to do guns of the same class. The Porphis is for bigger air compressors and the D1 is for small compressors. DIY guys using a small compressor could never use the Porphis gun.
@@thetriggerman954 Thanks for the info! If you had access to any compressor, painting in a blowup booth in the suburbs, would you go HVLP or LVLP? I will have the exhaust filtered so I don't expect too much overspray to hit the street. (I'm hoping anyway, if I spray the neighbor's van Viking blue he won't be happy!)
@@runningman00900 me personally I love the Iwata LPH 400. With the silver cap it's considered and LVLP it uses 9 CFM. It's a little more pricey than the Porphis but it's my favorite. But if you had those other 2 guns to choose from the Porphis will get you a better finish and it's more beginner friendly. Won't run as easy because it sprays out a little slower do to the fine atomization.
@@thetriggerman954 ok, I will keep my eye open for a used one. A few posted on ebay but still not cheap and they look run down! I see the wider4 with a split nozzle that says its the replacement for the 400, thoughts on it?
Trigger man i have a black truck that I want to paint. Can I just DA it with 400 add spray my base coat or do I need to put a primer or a sealer first?
@@phillipgonzalez5407 You can either 2K prime it or you can seal it right before you paint me personally I like to 2K prime then sand the 2K primer flat and then go directly with my base coat over the 2K because you get a flatter finish once you apply sealer to sealer will have a little texture which then would give you more texture in your finish.
@@thetriggerman954 by the way,,do you think this is a faster spraygun or the slow and steady one?.I can't decide which porphis should I take for clear gun.. what would you recommend?
oh yes i just picked up the black widow, cant wait to try it on monday. Whats your fluid and fan settings for it bro? i always get runs with x5500 on boxsides. how do you advise me to be more efficient to make my hours
I actually have everything wide open on the black widow. And to be honest I haven't worked on commission in about 16 years. And even the last time I worked on flat rate the shop gave me a guarantee so I would never make less than 50 hours even when there was no work in the shop. But the only thing I could suggest always be doing something, never sit and wait for anything to dry, you could be working on another part of the vehicle or on another vehicle in between coats of primer or whatever else, I actually have a video dropping next week where I explain a little bit of my method I used when I had two spray booths and two peppers and I was the only painter I used to turn around 400 hours a week. That's why I'm kind of heavy with my base coat people laugh and say trigger man You're one coat of base is equivalent to my five coats of base and it's because I was conditioned that way to make more money. But I'll speak on it briefly and the video I dropped next week. 😎💪🏼 And as far as runs on the bed sides you have to just stay at one distance and keep moving Don't get thrown off by the curves and body lines on the bedside hump treat it as a flat panel and just keep moving.
@@thetriggerman954 thank you man for always replying so quick lol. I appreciate the effort you put into your videos being informative about everything. Ill try your tips and wait for that video. Im only able to do about 130-160 hours bi weekly. Im working fast but prepping myself and competing with the other guys for the jobs. It gets stressful at times
@@dandee28 ohh I know exactly what you mean. Been there man it's like a rat race that never ends. I think 80 hours and above per week is good but it can always be better. By myself I use to get 100-160 a week with 4 other painters but the shop had unlimited work you can stay and work all night if you wanted. It was a huge towing company that had a body shop connected to it so they would tow in cars that were in accidents plus the insurance work so there was more work and we could handle.
The Black Widow is the better gun, especially for novices, because is puts the material out at a slower pace (which means more control over the application) and less likely to get runs in the surface. The Porphis puts the paint out quicker, which in some instances for a less experienced operator could lead to issues such as sags or runs. More control with the Black Widow is better in my opinion. You get awesome results with either gun, but the Black Widow is more user-friendly. Black Widow Wins !
I have the porphis prd-715 for my clear gun and i run it wide open and can say you really have to mess up to run clear because i havent yet with it. I have run clear with my slower dv1-c because its harder to go slow than it is fast. Plus that atomization of the porphis is a step beyond other cheaper guns. Also u can turn the porphis down if its too much. Black widow you can only open up so much but not as much as porphis
@@HPAcustomriflesandcerakote I know all of that, I just let them gun Diva know it alls talk lol it would be a never ending battle with those type of guys. Another guy just message me and said that some dude in a garage painting a motorcycle tank says that the gun can only operate at 18 psi with glass results 🤣😫 So never mind the climate that the guy is in? Never mind the materials that the guy is in? One guy even told me that the guy warms up the clear in the microwave I have no idea who they're talking about but it's a tad bit different so I just let them talk I didn't even correct him 🤣
@@HPAcustomriflesandcerakoteTrue, and it sounds like you have a lot of experience spraying cars. However, a novice might overlap the spray patterns at the doors for example, and with a heavy load coming out of the gun, he could over-load an area and so cause a sag or even a run, especially if the clear dries too slow. Just saying the Black Widow is harder to cause a run, cause it is more forgiving with overlaps due to its slower application of the paint/clear.
Hey trigger I tried the am tech clear and I like it but I got a little sag in it how long do you wait before you cut the run out and how long after can you cut and buff it

They are very close, that's why I said if you have either gun then you're still good to go. But I think the Porphis is a better deal/gun for the ease of spraying experience as well as a great finish. Plus less overspray which we all can use.

I can't give you a true answer. Both guns are great.

My thoughts exactly 💯
Hi Trigger, great head to head shootout there Mr Boss Man Sir😁as soon as this video started I thought the Porphis would be crowned the winner but I haven't seen the Black Widow apart from the reviews on here but just from the finish on the clear I think the Porphis gives a slightly better finish with a deeper flatter gloss👌loving these 👌2 guns one cup comparisons Trigga!!👏
Ok I'm off to check out your other channel bro😎🤠😂John UK
🥳🥳 thank you John yes the Porphis took the 🏆on this one. Glad you like the new series 2 guns 1 cup 😎 now we need a new challenger to go up against the Porphis 🤔
Have you tried the Fuji MP-V8 Trigger, I have 2 of them and they might be a contender against the Porphis but they are probably not as well made🤔
I couldn't find your other channel Boss, maybe you could add a link to it in the comments on your video🙏👍
Yea I do the comparison on guns that my subs ask me about. But thank you for your 2 cents. It's greatly appreciated 👍🏼

Everyone is buying them here in the US. Not sure about distribution but I know guys purchased it off their site
What's the size of the Porphis fluid tip Trigger Man?
This gun is a 1.3
Great video!

Depends how bad the old paint is. If it's not pealing and not to bad you can base it and clear it without priming or sealing
The clear coat is just peeling from the Sun what should I do after I d A it what would you do?
@@phillipgonzalez5407 You can either 2K prime it or you can seal it right before you paint me personally I like to 2K prime then sand the 2K primer flat and then go directly with my base coat over the 2K because you get a flatter finish once you apply sealer to sealer will have a little texture which then would give you more texture in your finish.
@@thetriggerman954 ok so sand the 2k primer with 400 ?
@@phillipgonzalez5407 yes 400 is good. You can start with 320 and finish with 400 or just use 400. But it is best to finish with 400.

The black widow looked like a more even coat with finer atomization.
Then the black widow is the gun for you my man 💪🏼
oh yes i just picked up the black widow, cant wait to try it on monday.
@@thetriggerman954 oh and can I use my pps adapter from my sata guns for the black widow? I forgot to buy one!
@@dandee28 I believe Sata uses a different # adapter. Because my adapter for my Satas do not fit the black widow
Right on brother 💪🏼
