Session musicians are a whole different animal. The way they are able to adapt and perform in short order is remarkable. They are definitely the unsung heroes of the music industry.
Lukather is actually also a competent singer and piano player since that was his first instrument. He plays guitar, piano and sings on the Toto track I Will Remember.
Jeff even said himself he doesn't like doing solos because he's more interested in doing a good groove to song than being flashy. I know a guy who recorded an album with him and he said Jeff was very kind and humble but the grooves that he laid down were second to none.
Jeff, Neil Peart and Phil Collins were the three drummers that inspired me to become a drummer. I admired (and still do) Jeff because he was more interested in serving the song rather than showing off.
"Hold the Line" is definitely one of my personal favorite Toto songs. Beyond the ones that got airplay like "Rosanna" and "Africa," I'm partial to "99" and "I Won't Hold You Back."
My favourite is Rosana, I just love how the opening line trips off the tongue but the vocal range is very enjoyable as well plus that instrumental jazzy outro. This band definitely deserved to be a lot bigger than they were. So great to see and hear the praise for session musicians. While they get a credit when they contribute, they don't get THE credit they should. This was from an era when I felt so much music coming from America was well-written, well-performed and just so great to listen to.
My favorite Toto song is Roseanna. Vocals are shared between Steve Lukather, the guitar player, and Bobby Kimball, the lead singer you so raved about. The drummer, Jeff Porcaro, does some interesting fills that are sort of unique to him and drum students learn this as the Porcaro shuffle. Pretty cool! Another more subdued song is “99”. Give a listen.
Thank you Beth for the wonderful insights and analysis. Players have to sight read, period. Even the great drummers. Toto is a high school band, I should know, I went to school with them. My high schools favorite band! Fun to watch them become so loved, RIP Jeff P and Mike P, never forgotten, couldn't be prouder. ❤
These guys were all over Michael Jackson’s Thriller album…the synth player wrote “human nature” which is a *serious* highlight and Steve (the guitarist) played most of those funky guitar licks that everyone knows to this day. Regarding this tune, “hold the line”, I’m always impressed during the chorus. How any dude can hit those highest harmonies with any sense of musicality is completely beyond me. I can squeak my way up to an E on my very best days and this is obviously higher than that…at least an F-F#.
For me this song is my favorite of Toto. Perhaps it is because it was the very fist song of theirs that I heard on their album. There are many other great songs from Toto, but this one is my fav.
For me, 'Hydra' from the album 'Hydra' has always captivated me. Great musical textures, fantastic use of empty space, storytelling and virtuosity; this collection of session musos really did explore the medium. Shout out to Andrew Higgins who turned me on to them back in the day.
I love these guys! I got the chance to meet them twice during their 40 Trips Around the Sun Tour and it was soo awesome! I think my favorite Toto Song would be 'Better World' from the album Mindfields, it's got a good mix of rock, prog and epic AND on top of that it has a great message.
Thank you for reacting to this song, I've been a fan of this band for many years now, and have so many favourite songs, they have done quite a lot of albums with many great songs on them, so it's hard to choose one. I highly recommend going to see them live, even though there is only two original members Steve Lukather ( guitar ) and Joe Williams ( singer who occasionally, but now permanently replaced Bobby Kimball who's in this video ) they are still a great band to see live. I understand they will be touring Europe ( hopefully UK ) in 2023/24 with Journey supporting them. Bobby was a fantastic singer but now sadly suffers with dementia.
This is absolutely my favorite late '70s song. And the astonishing thing about that is that it has been my favorite late '70s song since the very first time I heard it in the late 70s.
Beth, I was there for Toto's first tour in our city back in February '79 and I have been following them ever since. IMO, they are the greatest collection of musicians in one band in the history of rock n' roll. Jeff Porcaro on drums was the engine that drove so many hits for so many artists. Cheers!
My cousin's band Restless Heart were all Nashville session musicians that were put together as a group by producer Tim Dubois. They had a good level of success in tge late 80's to early 90's. They were always known for their harmonies.
absolutely love this song...... love the way it starts ...a buggar to count in until you understand where 1 is, the keyboard parts the bass line the vocals and harmonies the drums ....total from toto
Richard Page is another example of a session musician who eventually made it big with a band called Mr Mister. Broken Wings is one of the best songs of the 80s. Kyrie & Is It Love are awesome hits too.
There's a wonderful twee track from a little known singer - the late Clifford T. Ward on his 1972 debut album "Singer Songwriter" (the closing track on side one called "The Session Singer" which explains everything about session singers / musicians. Lyrically apt !
In regards to Toto favourite song, That is difficult, there are so many. But I'd say: Anna, Lea, Cruel, English Eyes, The Last Love (for me), just to mention some. Thanks. Love your way to analyze and enjoy songs. I follow You from México 💞
Oh, this is my favourite Toto song… and Rosanna, Stop loving you, I’ll be over you.. Africa of course.. we used to play all of them before the war started in 🇺🇦…. Thank you for your reaction, Beth ❤
You are spot on Beth - love ya!!🥰 Favorite Toto-song is sooo hard to say but ok "Endless" on the "Isolation"-album. The thing is that every song is fantastic!! No matter how far back you go.... 😲
Would be amazing a reaction of this record, especially where Fergie sings, cause he had a really high voice: Endless, Isolation, Lion or Angel Don't Cry are gems from him.

"Without your Love" and "I'll Be Over You" are two that didn't get as much attention as "Africa" or Rosanna" but I really liked them. The group 38 Special also had some great songs at the same time period
As a musician, I have an immense respect for everyone who has ever been in Toto, but I've never been a big fan of most of their music. Having said that, I absolutely love this song. The vocal, guitar tone and keyboard riff are just brilliant. I also really like Stranger in Town and I have a soft spot for Africa.
Same here. Toto was never a band I cared to much about, despite them being great musicians. But this song get's me every time. I esp. love the e-piano riff.
Toto is such a versatile virtuosic band of several different influences: R&B, Soul, Jazz and of course Hard Rock. Some of their songs contain just one or two of these things, while others - like this song and especially "Rosanna" - are a combination of all the above. Also, with "Hold The Line," Toto literally pioneered the use of the piano / keyboard riff along with Hard Rock guitar, and directly influenced Jefferson Starship to do that on their amazing Hard Rock songs "Jane" and "Find Your Way Back." (Keyboardist David Freiberg admitted this in a recent interview.) Toto is a very unique band that really bridged genres and every single one of their 6 original members were absolute virtuosos at their respective instruments.
My favorite song is anything live that they do I've seen him in concert in the 80s because I'm old and they were awesome they were A step above they're a whole different Band live

Oh there are a few great songs to choose from. Toto is one of my most favourite bands, always hearing them on the radio when I was growing up in the 70s onwards. Africa, Rosanna, Georgy Porgy or 99 first come to mind :)
You are asking for my favourite Toto song? Impossible to tell because there are so many and it changes so often. Right now, I guess it's "Slipped Away" from the Tambu album. Steve Lukather is singing. Completely different kind of voice, but really good.
They have so many fantastic songs. This one is probably my favorite besides Africa. But I’ll be over you, Rosanna, I won’t hold you back, and Pamela (comes in 3rd place) are all fantastic songs.
Oh yes,;I have watched everyone of your episodes. I was thinking, when you were doing the circus routine and holding my breath, because I knew that there was a good chance that you could be hurt . Those are the guys who plays in the Michael Jackson's album BAD ...
@@SebastianPerezG Paich and Steve Porcaro only played on Liberian Girl on BAD. The band members were much more involved in Thriller.
Props for knowing. Many didn't know they were a group of the greatest session musicians of all time.
I like this song so much better than Africa.❤
Especially the ones of that era before there were so many options to create and tweak sounds post-recording.
EVERY member of this band is a master of their instrument!! Love Toto!! One of the best live bands to ever play a show!!
Lukather is actually also a competent singer and piano player since that was his first instrument. He plays guitar, piano and sings on the Toto track I Will Remember.
Steve Lukather has played on over 1200 albums. At his studio height he was doing 25 sessions a week. Insane.
His finger will never be the same after that😂😂😂
Jeff Porcaro is one of the best drummers in history. His ability to drive a groove was second to none. He never did too much.
I had the same feeling Dave Grohl from Nirvana. He drove the songs.
Jeff even said himself he doesn't like doing solos because he's more interested in doing a good groove to song than being flashy. I know a guy who recorded an album with him and he said Jeff was very kind and humble but the grooves that he laid down were second to none.

"Hold the Line" is definitely one of my personal favorite Toto songs. Beyond the ones that got airplay like "Rosanna" and "Africa," I'm partial to "99" and "I Won't Hold You Back."
Luv 99
I won't hold you back is amazing. Steve Lukather is unreal!!
Interestingly, Luke said that he (they?) hated playing 99 in the years following the album's release.
What is the meaning behind, "Hold The Line?" A friend of mine dedicated this song to me.
My favourite is Rosana, I just love how the opening line trips off the tongue but the vocal range is very enjoyable as well plus that instrumental jazzy outro. Rick Beato has a superb breakdown of Rosanna and it made me appreciate them as musicians even more.
I'll check that out, I subscribe to his channel too!
My favorite "unknown" TOTO tunes are from the first album, "Georgy Porgy" and "Goodbye Girl". Worth a listen!!!
I love George Porgy!!❤
I was dating a Georgie when this came out, so it's always reminded me of her.
I love Bobby Kimball's vocal performance in "Rosanna" 😁 And I love singing that song 😍
Plus getting the rhythm of the drum part on Rosanna right is still the test for drummers of all abilities.
Steve Lukather is great on that track too. Underrated as a singer.
"dance like...an Uncle!"😂 Fav TOTO song is tied between I'll Be Over You and Rosanna!
My favorite Toto song is "I Won't Hold You Back". Steve Lukather is amazing.
I Won't Hold You Back, written and sung by that amazing guitarist Steve Lukather.
Another more subdued song is “99”. this song has pretty difficult drumming.
I saw them in 1982 in concert and Michael McDonald open forum there's such great players all of them in concert they take it to a whole other level
Bobby Kimball not only did the lead vocal, he also did the background vocals with Luke
This is one of the best songs ever. Great song and vocals and the band is amazing
Love the sparse minimal but yet wonderful jigsaw puzzle composition of this. It just works so well and the vocals command beyond belief.
That high harmony in the chorus is *wicked* stuff.
Thank you Beth for the wonderful insights and analysis. Players have to sight read, period. Even the great drummers.

The mostly played on the entire thriller album. Especially Jeff Pocaro. Rip.
But Toto as a band had their best time with Simon Philips on drums.
And then to boot you add in an Eddie Van Halen solo.
They are simply the most prolific band of “greats”, ever!!!
In my opinion Steve Lukather's opening riff makes Beat It so good, more then Van Halen's solo
@@symbiosisai lukather played all the guitar and bass parts on beat it. Except the solo
