Toto was a sort of supergroup formed by some of the best studio musicians in LA at the time. All the original members have so many credits (and lots of non-credits) on so many albums, it is insane. Jeff Porcaro was such an excellent drummer, he'd come in, nail a song in a take or two and be done. Even the members of Toto were like 'he's on another level, we'd be messing around with guitar takes and he'd be waiting on us like "hurry up guys" '. I saw someone breakdown all the parts of "Roseanna" on YT and it was a phenomenal piece of recording.

The gentleman on the keyboard use to hit higher notes in this song, but with age, he’s singing at a lower octave, which happens to some of us singers as we get older. Bobby can still hit his high notes, though, and that makes me happy!

"The whole thing was the fun part." Hahahaha! I like that you saw the live version and liked it. I saw Toto numerous times live in different configurations and they were always great. Some of the most musical talent you can find in a band. Mike, the bassist, unfortunately died of ALS a few years ago. Lukather, the guitarist, was one of my main guitar influences. And he has a really good voice as well. You can hear him as lead singer on "Tambu" or "Kingdom of Desire" - two really great albums.

Two great covers of this song I would highly recommend: Leo Moracchioli of Frog Leap Studios has a great metal version. Also, another RUclips channel/creator Mike Massé, who's a full-time musician now, but was getting his start back in 2010 singing covers live in a Salt Lake City pizzeria. His 16-million view live performance video of Africa is legendary among his fans. Mike was a public defender at the time, and would sing and play his acoustic guitar, usually accompanied by his friend Jeff Hall, whose day job was prosecutor, who sang backing vocals and played bass guitar. After work, these two would literally leave the courthouse, slip into some dad-casual clothes, slide on down to The Pie, set up in their reserved booth, and perform seated all night for the pizza-eating public.
It's really an epic cover of Africa, not to be missed! And I think you'll be pleasantly-surprised at the vocals -- Mike's a natural tenor, plus it's a superb arrangement, winning praise from Toto themselves. Hope you get to enjoy this dynamic duo, Maggie!

  • @chetthehoss

There is a live version of Africa recorded either in Poland or Amsterdam where they kind of do a tribute to Jeff Porcaro (the original drummer that created the rhythm for the song). It's wonderful. As the song draws to a close, each band member gradually leaves one after one until only Simon Phillips (current, well, now former, drummer) is the only one playing for a few bars. Then the song fades. It's wonderful how they did that so subtly. You absolutely have to find the live version of Rosanna taken from "Falling IN Between Live". The intro is so amazing, then they break into the original arrangement. The harmonies are incredible.

Steve Lukather "Luke" is one of the best guitarists in the world and to prove a point I think he wrote this song and he also wrote Thriller for Michael Jackson and does most of the guitar work on that song baring that little fill from Eddie Van Halen who was the new kid on the block at the time. Steve formed Toto when he was 19 after two or three years as a gun slinger session guitarist.

You really need to hear this song performed by the Gaelic Choir. It's like, a 50-voice choir singing this song in Gaelic and it's genuinely brilliant.
Also the original line up of Toto was made up of some of the most prolific L.A. Studio musicians of the 70's and 80's. Hence, their extremely tight sound and vocal harmonies.

I really love the song "Goodbye Girl". I'm sure you will agree that the production on their first album was epic and way ahead of it's time!!! Also I have another artist for you to check out. Her name is Teena Marie the song is called "Out on a Limb" she is different, but very talented. By the way I'm a vocalist and I too studied opera. Since you started reading the lyrics to "Africa" by Toto, I would like to present an excerpt by the late, great Johnny Clegg (1982):
    Copper sun sinking low
    Scatterlings and fugitives
    Hooded eyes and weary brows
    Seek refuge in the night
They are the scatterlings of Africa
    Each uprooted one
    On the road to Phelamanga
    Where the world began
I love the scatterlings of Africa
    Each and every one
In their hearts a burning hunger
    Beneath the copper sun
    . . . . . . . . . . . . .
    Ancient bones of Olduvai
Echos of the very first cry
"Who made me here, and why
    Beneath the copper sun?"
    My very first beginnings
    Beneath the copper sky
    Lie deeply buried
    In the dust of Olduvai
And we are scatterlings of Africa
    Both you and I
We are on the road to Phelamanga
    Beneath a copper sky
And we are Scatterlings of Africa
On a journey to the stars
    Far below we leave forever
    Dreams of what we were
Deep ancestry. If this has piqued your interest and you decide to look into the song, you will find it well worth your while.
