    Lost his arm in a car accident. The band waited for him to learn foot drumming. Great friends in my book. Cared more for his friend than fame. Try finding that now.

      Was it true that the drummer wanted to quit or give up the band after he lost his arm and the band didn't give up on him and kept him?

    • @athlonen
      @athlonen 3 года назад +13

      @@the1andonlyknudsen no. Rick didn't want to give up. 3 days after the accident, Phil and Steve (the guitarists) visited him in the hospital, where Rick was upbeat, saying "I'm going to play drums again!".. They initially thought "It's the medication!" A week or so after the accident, he was in the studio helping to put together a drum set to his specifications, to where whatever sounds he would play with his left hand, he would be able to use his feet to produce those sounds. The band was NEVER going to force him out; if he wanted out, it was going to be Rick's decision. Rick never gave up, to the point that they took a break to play the Donnington festival in 1986. Rick didn't miss a beat, in front of 65000 people. Joe Elliott introduced him, and the place went ballistic: straight cheers and applause for a good 5 minutes straight. Rick balled his ass off behind the drumkit, because he knew that it was a big stage in his comeback. He still gets that applause to this day.
      Watch their induction speed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You'll see what I mean there.

    It is an amazing story.They had put out a couple of albums and had a couple of minor hits,but when they put out the "Pyromania" album,they had hit after hit and became huge.Then the drummer looses his arm in a car accident.They had been great friends and worked hard for years together to get where they were,but he has one arm.Most bands(and it would be hard to blame them),would have said" sorry,man but we are finally at the top and we are going to have to go on without you.Who would ever think that he could ever be able to play drums one handed at all,let alone well enough to play in one of the hottest bands at the time.But,he was their friend and they had faith that he could do it.They put their careers on hold(at the worst possible time)and waited for two years for him to recover,a special drum set invented and for him to learn how to play again.The album this came off of was their first record after his 2 year recovery and they started back just where they left off. A major band,putting out hit after hit again.To me,it is one of the greatest stories in music history.I love their music,but I respect everything they did to get to being known as one of the best rock bands ever.

    Def Leppard is the quintessential 80s bands. Their set up had 3 guitar players and all five could sing backup. That makes a band successful. Rick Allen, drummer, car crash was so violent that the seat belt severed his arm at the shoulder. After rehab, the drums were re fitted with extra foot pedals so that he compensated for the lost arm. Also note Steve Clark, classically trained guitarist, died in 1991, from alcohol poisoning. These guys have been through a lot but they are family and they stick together.
    If you have a chance, search you tube for their acceptance speech into the R&R Hall of Fame. Joe Elliot give a great speech about their journey.

    Rick Allen lost his arm when he was 21. He had been with Def Leppard since he was 15. They DEFINITELY weren't gonna leave him behind when he lost his limb. They stayed with him and waited for him to heal. It's beautiful.
    He still suffers PTSD from the accident to this day, and says drumming is a meditational healing for him.

    Def Leopard is one of my favorite bands! Their High and Dry album came out in 1981 and is STILL my favorite album by them, though I LOVE everything they've done! When they made the album High and Dry, they were very young - the drummer was 15, I think, and the others were all 18 and younger. When the drummer lost his arm in an auto accident, the band said they would not go on without him. So he stepped up and became a kick ass one armed drummer, the best!! They put everything into everything they do!

    I discovered Def Leppard in 1982 as a junior in high school in small town Kansas. Twenty-four days after my 19th birthday the drummer lost his arm. The lead guitarist died and my bestie and I discovered this via news on the car radio and we both cried. I’ve now seen them several times in concert including the last show of this year’s Stadium Tour on 9/8/24. Still a fan and always will be. They don’t disappoint.

    2:26 when you've seen Rick Allen, and that "is the drummer playing with one arm?" moment suddenly takes hold, but you don't want to interrupt the flow of the song to voice your opinion of such! Gold! This was what hooked me, way back in the late 80s when I was watching the video for Rocket (oddly enough, now my very favourite song of all time), and had that "does the drummer only have one arm?" Yes, that is correct, he dos only have one arm! Too many people have already tried to describe how he lost it etc.
    And today, he is perhaps the best drummer in the world because of his achievement in returning from an adversity that would've retired pretty much every other drummer, and his talent having IMPROVED out of sight since. He might not play as fast or as "technically proficiently" as a Joey Jordinson (RIP) or Raymond Herrera (ex Fear Factory) but what he does is simply brilliant. Do yourself a favour and check out some live videos from their shows in recent times, most notably this piece of action they always play at the end of the instrumental song Switch 625, and watch all the way to the end. The Thundergod has no issues with his "disability". An absolute legend and a true, genuine bloke. Certainly my Hero. ruclips.net/video/sh9aHoSgl3U/видео.html
    And watching through this video, I absolutely loved your reaction, and the unconscious respect you afforded him, and the band, earned you another subscriber today :-) Rock on 🤘

    Steve Clark was one of the most underrated guitarists of that time. He was not only a great player but a great person. RIP STEVE!

    RIP Steve Clark (blonde long haired guitarist). I was so happy to have seen them on this tour before Steve died and watched Rick Allen is awe. I was in attendance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction of this amazing band. I tell you, not a dry eye on that stage as they accepted the induction. Please react to “Bringing on the Heartbreak”, “Photography” and an oldie but a goodie “Me and My Wine”. Thank you for the reaction.

    Great song, great reaction guys. You must react to : "Billy's Got a Gun" and "Too Late For Love" from the Pyromania album released in 1983.. Those two songs are excellent and very underrated. Cheers from Ontario,Canada.
