It took Mutt four and-a-half months to mix this album. This was after two years of actual recording. He was incredibly exacting. Just a single guitar part would take hours to track. But that was back when bands had massive budgets to do that sort of thing. And 'Hysteria' was the most expensive album ever recorded in the UK at the time.
This Album was produced to absolute perfection and holds up perfectly 30+ years later. The band went thru the third circle of hell for like 3 years making the record to prove it!
2 years late to this party, but in relation to your comment about Def Leppard going through 3 circles of hell making this album... yep, and Def Leppard is the group they are now because of everything they had gone through just in those early years!
There really isn't much more to say about this song than what you've said. Musically, it's incredibly deep in layers while not being "busy" with noise. Everything about it, for me, is perfect.
Agree. It’s a masterpiece in that sense. At times the guys are layering at least 5 guitar parts from the 2 leads but still manage to blend it and make it sound minimalist!
I bought this when I was 16 in 1987 on cassette, and just played this album to death, man I still love it, I’m glad people re finding it again for the first time. Gives me chills!
Rock of Ages and Pour some sugar. Rock Anthems!!! Photograph is the song that hit the American charts and radio, it was their big break. I seen the 3x in the 80’s. AMAZING. Joe’s voice is like heaven. The Drummer Rick Allen lost his arm from a car accident. He is called Thunder God!! The group said if he can’t come back than they are done.
It's a thing of beauty huh. Mostly down to (Boston guitarist) Tom Sholtz's portable Rockman Chorus unit, which a lot of 80s guitarists used through that decade. Kudos to Mutt Lange too for getting Steve & Phil to individually record each of their guitar strings to make up a single chord, rather than simply strumming it, to get that crystal clear chordal "clang-clang-clang" during the chorus.
@@Nui. I had never heard that before... about Mutt's production and the way he had Steve and Phil record those chords for the chorus. It's so cool to learn that and at the same time understand and fully appreciate the sound and how it came together. Mutt's genius just blows my mind, and I'm just really curious where you read or saw that. What makes this album a masterpiece is this is undeniably the quintessential example of "over production" but in the best way possible. Impossible to not love this.
@@rudygonzalez8755 It's definitely a quintessential recording of it's era, and one which still holds up amazingly well today. I've been reading up on all the "hysteria guitar tone" interviews I can find, so amongst all those dozens of articles there was one (pretty sure talking to either Steve or Mutt) where they talked about capturing that enhanced string definition chord via recording every string separately. Another thing they used was the Gallien Krueger 250ML amp, but only in a few select places.... like the feedback start of Animal, otherwise the Rockman covered most of the album.
You two could do "Love Bites", if you want to go down the Deff Leppard hole. It's another really romantic and really charged with feelings songs of theirs ❤
Love bites is a great choice. This was their seminal album. Pour some sugar on me rocks. Did you know the drummer lost an arm in a car crash not long before this album, rest of the band waited til he reinvented himself as a drummer. That explains the trippy double bass drum beat. A one armed rock drummer!
I was 15 when this album came out....I remember it was huge...I met my future wife when this album came out....we are both big Def Leppard fans. We saw this tour and the Adrenalize tour. This brings back a lot of memories....we used to go skating and back in the 80's going out skating with friends was just so fun...my wife and I couple skated to this song....then they played "Run Riot" from Def Leppard for the boys speed skate and I ran into the barrier wall...IT WAS AWESOME!
This song was big for us. A perfect driving song. Sadly, it also brings back sad memories. In our group, one of my friend's girlfriend died in a car wreck when this was on constant rotation on the radio and she loved it, too. Every time I hear this song I love it and always remember how crushed our friend was... every time it came on the radio he'd break down. My eyes are watering up now, even :(
There is an incredible documentary about the epic, torturous making of this album from the brilliant British series 'Classic Albums'. However you can get it, it's worth it to see how much went into making an album as sonically perfect as this.
This whole album (Hysteria - the album) is a classic for the reasons you say: the sonic impact and production. The whole album is like it. Then you have have to go back further in time and listen to Pyromania (1983), then High & Dry (1981).
Absolutely a "production masterpiece". This song (to me) exemplified the unequaled feeling of being in love when you're young. Walking those high school hallways thinking about that girl, this was the song in my head. Damn. This band's music is all about those emotions, and just being an accompaniment to your daily trials and tribulations. Love it. You guys need to listen to "Bringing On The Heartbreak", "Love And Affection", "Photograph", "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad", "Miss You in a Heartbeat", "White Lightning", "Animal", "Women", and finally, "Gods of War" by them. Thank me later. 🧐
First of all, I've never seen you guys before but I love you, two. Secondly, it is so beautiful that 34 years later, people still appreciate the effort that went into this album. This recording was approached as a symphonic endeavour - not unlike an entire orchestra building chords and melodies one note at a time, but rather than doing it as an ensemble, recording it one instrument at a time. There are as many as 100 guitar tracks layered on top of one another, dozens of vocal tracks over dozen of vocal tracks, and rumour has it that chords were recorded ... ONE NOTE AT A TIME... so that you can hear the brightness or the power of the chord but you don't hear the strumming. Imagine the effort and the focus that takes. It was so intricate and intentional, that when the guys were done recording, they had to sit down and relearn the songs in a way that could be played live. As per my symphonic analogy, it was like taking a symphony written for and by an orchestra, and then telling a quartet to play it. I think it's fair to say there will never be an album like this again.
This is in my Top 3 favorite albums of the 80s along with Moving Pictures by Rush, and Synchronicity by The Police. Hysteria is also my favorite track on the album.
I'm a Def Leppard fanboy since 83 and this is arguably my favorite song (Photograph as well depending on what time of day). Talking about the engineering, their producer/task master Mutt Lange took it to a whole different level. On those dreamy, shimmering cord sounds, he had them play each string 1 at a time for each cord and pasted them together to create that tone. I'm envious of all the songs you still have to hear.
This is one of the albums that was the soundtrack to my youth. Hours playing and rewinding of my Sony Walkman cassette player learning the lyrics. 🤘😁❤️
The whole hysteria album is amazing. I own it on CD and lp. Had it on cassette as a kid. I loved this band growing up. Still do but I played them to death lol.
I absolutely LOVE Def Leppard. Their music makes me wanna jump up & down in cheerleader fashion, and grab my guitar and just play along with them. Their Hysteria album IS the best produced rock album in-the-world. Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame good. One song that just won't go away in my head is "Love Bites". But these other 2 songs are also unforgettable: "Pour Some Sugar On Me", and "Photograph". Coincidentally, these 3 songs were also their highest grossing songs ever (made the most money).
3rd grade when this came out. Even at that age it was euphoric when parents or high schoolers played it on the radio or cassette. Just a week ago I saw my 3rd grade teacher Mrs/Dr. Rich with my 2 daughters for the first time since leaving her class. Miracle, magical. Capture your 20's and 30's the best you can. Be satisfied you did everything and Feared Nothing. GOD bless you.
Out Loud Studios, I love every song they recorded and there is many songs by Def Leppard because many years ago I bought every L.P. they released I was 30 years of age when this record was recorded I had it both on L.P. and cassette so I could listen to their music while walking. I am super glad you both love it. Great music. Now there RUclips downloads. Thanks so much for this video and it is Tuesday 01-02-2024 so, Happy New year into 2024,
30 years later and it still blows my mind Def Leppard had 7 #1 songs on this album even after drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car crash and had to teach himself how to play with one arm. And they had just finish their tour for their latest album right before Corona Virus hit giving them a 30 year career and they are still making music.
You guys need to see them in concert when this song is played. Its an experience. In the round in 88 was incredible, its very well remembered. Truly one of the greatest songs of all time by one of the greatest bands of all time. 40 year fan here.
Yeah, the LAYERS of music (guitar strings), beats (especially that killer drum sequence before the crescendo like), and vocals! And wow that's the exact word, "melancholy" that I wasn't sure how to verbalize how but it's definitely palpable, or just tuned more into the fade-out which was a kind of fading away and missing, like a longing over distance as he's saying "closer". Hit the nail on the head! Unexpected shared reaction!
Def Leppard made me put motley Crue back to number 2 spot. Def Leppard is like 5 genres. Their sound. And this song? Made me think back in the 80's? Once I get older like 50's? And when I hear this? Bring back memories. OLD SCHOOL. and I'm 51. SMH. Guess what? It's happening. Thank you GUY'S. ROCK ON.
The producer for this album was Robert "Mutt" Lang...he produced many Def Leppard albums, he also produced Brian Adams hit album Waking Up the Neighbors, the classic Cars album "Heartbeat City", AC/DC "Highway to Hell" AND "Back in Black" also "For those about to Rock", Foreigner's "4" album, Nickelback "Dark Horse"...plus a ton of pop songs too, from Britney Spears, to The Backstreet Boys and Shania Twain....the guy has been all over the place.
Go my Def Leppard power ballad's list: Love bites Have you ever needed someone so bad When love and hate collide Miss you in a heartbeat (electric version) Stand Up (kick love into motion) Goodbye Two steps behind (electric version) Bringing on a heartbreak (live version in the round in your face)
I did exactly as you said at 3:00 back when this album came out. Wife and Daughter were sleeping in their rooms and I was out in the family room on the couch with headphones on sleeping to this. When I woke up to go to bed, I took the headphones off and realized the music was blasting because I forgot to hit the button to disable the speakers. Nobody woke up!
Love you guys, yeah, ole Mutt!! Even Joe Elliot- the singer, was always saying he couldn't hit those notes, Mutt, "Don't worry, I got that handled", he did, Is your wife always that nice!!! So cool to see a couple groove to some good ole rock!!!! I subscribed!!!
Huge def lep fan here, if u wanna get to the more heavy stuff, check Stagefright, Let it go or photograph. I u wanna try somth more like hysteria check love bites, stand up... All this attention to details is insane.
I have seen Def Leppard live with Styx and Foreigner...it was one of the best concerts I have ever been too. Serious bucket list shit. You gotta check em out if you ever get the chance.
Good video. I was watching the Classic Albums episode on this album a few weeks ago, and I just couldn't believe the amount of stuff this band went through to get it made. Something about having to sell 5 or 6 million copies just to break even on the cost of production! Needless to say, I think they recouped their costs! Solid track, but for me, Love and Affection is probably my favorite song on the album. Just love the guitar tone at the beginning.
Favorite Lep song. That "wall of sound" that's layered is a direct result of Robert "Mutt" Lange. He went on to produce and engineer Shania Twain's biggest hits in the 90s, as well. Got a sub. Good video.
No forgiveness necessary this is my first time watching any of your videos and i quickly subscribed because i like watching ppl get excited over the little things in life wether their watching videos or opening mystery boxes plus def leppard is my favorite band.
I just found u guys & am loving your musical & audio engineering journey listening to recordings of what's considered classic artists. Keep doing what you're doing, it's awesome. I think there's something that we've all been guilty of at least once is when we hear about or see something about an artist from a previous era a lot of times our 1st reaction is "oh yeah, that's old stuff" or "oh god, look at their hair & clothes" or "that's stuff my parents or grandparents listened to". And we have a tendency to mentally block it & judge without giving it a fair chance. Case & point, I grew up in the '90s & had music that was way different from Def Leppard. But something I learned then that changed so much for me was to look at the artists ages when they did something. It can change your whole perspective from "oh whatever, that's old" to damn they were my age or younger when they made that. I learned that they were all only in their late 20's except for the drummer who was like 4 years younger than the rest of the band when they created this. And this album was mega huge.
If you like it this much, you should see it LIVE!! It will bring a tear to your eye when they run the old vintage reel of black and white photos. RIP Steve Clark. Great reaction!!
I was 15 when I went to my first big rock show. The Def Leppard Hysteria 1988 tour. I love a lot of bands but I have to say Def Leppard is my all time favorite. This whole album is nuts, and the last track on the album Love & Affection may be one of my favorite songs. Do more Def Leppard! Try their killer early ballad “Bringiung on the Heartache off the High and Dry album! Keep Rock Alive!! 🤘🏽🖤🔥🙌🏼 ℁
This album is one of 3 albums in music history to have all the songs a #1 hit & you really need to watch the video & pay very close attention to the drummer . He's the best drummer ever .
Just discovered your channel, it showed on my feed. This is my favorite romantic song ever!! I already subscribed, and I'm on my way to watching your reactions to Dream Theater 😁 Keep it up! Great reaction
I highly recommend Def Leppard’s Two Steps Behind (Acoustic Version) on the B-Side of Adrenalize. If you’d like something with more action I recommend Excitable which is a lesser known song off the Hysteria album. Good video!
This is my first time watching any of your videos on your RUclips channel. I LOVE DEF LEPPARD !!! The drummer; Rick Allen lost his left arm on December 31st 1984 in a car accident due to a faulty (or defective) seatbelt but he still rocks.. I think Joe Elliott is an amazing lead singer
If you want to know why this song and album sounds so amazing check out the 'Hysteria' episode of the UK series CLASSIC ALBUMS. It lays it all out, from soup to nuts.
I really enjoyed both your observations about the song and the production in particular. You wouldn't believe the sort of backlash against this kind of approach that began. Guys like Mutt Lange and Bob Rock, once considered wizards with a magic touch, turned into "dinosaurs" of the industry.
Welcome to THE 80's!!!!!!!!!!! 😎 THAT sound is in the majority on the 80's records, in a multitude of genres and artists. Full, warm, punchy, powerful, multi-layered, detailed.... 😉 Listen to the whole of the Hysteria album, every single song it's a hit!!
Honey, that's Joe Elliott. Go find some videos from the Hysteria era to see the whole package that goes with that voice. He had girls falling out all over the world. Still does actually.
I used to black out my apartment and blast this album laying face down and eyes closed. The bass and drums thumped through my body complimented by the guitar and lyrics. My neighbors hated me.
this albumm and def leppardd wereeee soooo wayyy ahead oh their time,,it sounds like todaysss productions in 2020 ...mannnn thats called perfection...it doesnt for a second sounds from the 80sss damnnn DL are the besttt thingg in Rockkk
It's not just a great band and song! This is part of the sound track to my life! This is me cruising down Bloomfield ave in Jersey, in my camaro, picking up beautiful chicks!!!

I have seen Def Leppard live with Styx and Foreigner...it was one of the best concerts I have ever been too. Serious bucket list shit. You gotta check em out if you ever get the chance.
Oh for sure! We'll be all over it if we get the chance!
Loved y’all’s reaction. 11 guitar parts to Hysteria 👊🏼✌🏼🎶🎶keep rocking
That's why that was their #1. It's so dang good. A close second, IMO.
Love bites was a huge one when I was young ha ha totally brings me back
I glad you like it🙂 grew up with music like this. Thanks for keeping it alive with enthusiasm❤
My fav Leppard song - love your reactions and u have a new subscriber!
Favorite Lep song.
That "wall of sound" that's layered is a direct result of Robert "Mutt" Lange. He went on to produce and engineer Shania Twain's biggest hits in the 90s, as well.
Got a sub. Good video.
And marry her.
@@phelimmckeown1816 And divorced him when she discovered him cheating on her with her best friend.
Awesome song and Band. Have a good weekend.
And this album was mega huge.
i'm lucky enough to have found you guys! Just subbed and great review ! L%P from Sheffield U.K. (home of Def Leppard!)
Favorite Album all time. Hands Down. No question!!!!
If you like it this much, you should see it LIVE!! It will bring a tear to your eye when they run the old vintage reel of black and white photos. RIP Steve Clark. Great reaction!!
My favorite album ever, I remember being a teenager on my bike listening to this tape and wearing it out.
Yep thats Mutt Lange. Not only was it incredible production but he made the entire band play their instruments to absolute perfection.
I've seen them live over a dozen times. Hoping for more.
The whole "High and Dry" album is great!!
Goddammit this takes me back! I had this on cassette :-)
Good video!
Great reaction video. You just reacted to my all time favorite song. 😀😁😃😄
Este es uno de mis álbumes favoritos. Que bonitos recuerdos de los 80's. It is magic.
Watched them "live" at Rochester War memorial, Rochester, NY in 1988.
they wanted to make a greatest hits album of new songs and did it spot on
Love this song!!
THAT sound is in the majority on the 80's records, in a multitude of genres and artists. Full, warm, punchy, powerful, multi-layered, detailed.... 😉
Listen to the whole of the Hysteria album, every single song it's a hit!!
Honey, that's Joe Elliott. Go find some videos from the Hysteria era to see the whole package that goes with that voice. He had girls falling out all over the world. Still does actually.
I still have the actual record from the 80s. Singles from the album too
I used to black out my apartment and blast this album laying face down and eyes closed. The bass and drums thumped through my body complimented by the guitar and lyrics. My neighbors hated me.
Should see them in concert, even better.
Lmao ha ha yeah my head phones are on as well it’s tight as hell eh super dynamic
I’m 57.....you too Rock!!!! My Music!!!!!thanks!!!!
My absolute favorite song.
Great reaction to my favorite all time song. 😃😄😁😀

Def Leppard’s sound is so good. I have this album in CD quality FLAC format on my Fiio X7II paired with KEF Space One headphones. 🔥 Amazing sound
It's not just a great band and song! This is part of the sound track to my life! This is me cruising down Bloomfield ave in Jersey, in my camaro, picking up beautiful chicks!!!
It sold by the truck load when it was 1st released
