Even a century ago, labelling "that type of food" was the ultimate in throwing shade. And people of 'class' have no ability to realize the transparency.
For some context prior to this episode Chalky had already noticed subtle hints that his family viewed him as backward, country and uneducated. When his daughter asked him a school question his son incredulously stated "Why would you ask Dad?" And when he specifically requested a type of food for this dinner, his entire family gave each other side-eye glances like "we're not making that." Strong scene, powerful acting. Excellent timing. The scene was tense! I remember watching it live thinking to myself he didnt feel appreciated and felt looked down on, pitied, tolerated instead of valued and appreciated because his humble beginnings were far from his own family's reality. His family was far removed from his experience and for him it felt as if they looked down on him although he had provided the lifestyle in which they had been accustomed. Interestingly enough it was from his not so honorable line of work that afforded them the expensive duck on the menu. His request was simple and should have been honored by his wife. Also the way the wife disrespected him in front of the children by referring to his country ways as if she was ridiculing him and also admitting how she felt they were better than that. I could go on and on. A simple scene with so much depth and content without having too much dialouge.
I watched this scene a couple of times, felt intrigued and went and made some Hoppin John, and holy crap! I can see why he was pissed off, anybody who says they're above Hoppin John is out of their mind. Best bean dish I've ever had, hands down. Now where the damn hoppin john?

Rest easy, King. This scene was so much. A man deep in thought, turmoil from the trappings of taking care of his family. To see his family reap those benefits without understanding what has to happen for them to live the way they do. But also, to not recognize that there are benefits to actually acknowledge and be thankful for what is. There’s a fine line here.
2:19 that little shameful look down, I think everyone's been at that point. That "yea I am drunk....but my point still stands and im still pissed off."
It goes much deeper. Here we have an educated woman of "mixed" race married to a darker husband (Chalky) who is uneducated and illiterate but manages to provide for his family. Women like that looked down upon uneducated black men like Chalky. She saw serving "hoppin john" as lower class, hence why she was so persistent on serving duck instead. She even said, "You'll have to forgive my husband's country ways," as if he being from the country makes him backward. Chalky notices and is hurt by it.
D Cisco at first I was offended by his behavior towards his wife and kids and I couldn't understand why he was so angry at her but your explanation makes me understand his point of view better
I have to add something else. Remembering this is the 1920s, the MAN of the house sits at the head of the table and says grace traditionally. Blatant disrespect asking another man to say grace.
I totally agree with highman58. I don't think it was Chalky's resentment toward the boy at all. I think his anger was more angled toward his family, who happens to be lighter skinned and better educated, for shunning his "country ways" and taste. I think he feels he provides the life they enjoy and on his sweat & blood, yet is still looked down upon... In his own house within his own family no less. It's enough to deal with the outside worlds opinions but to feel a stranger in your own home

Well said. I think it's all of it. He's a powerful man even though he is uneducated. He's a gangster with muscle but he was still a black man in the early 19th century. He had to deal with Judgments outside his home. And he put his life on the line every day. Then he comes home and his family who has it 100x better than he did looks down on him and his upbringing. It's a very intense scene for sure.

This is an example of extreme disrespect and honestly he woudla had every right to go further and shut the whole thing down. I certainly would have.
incredible that what she does is considered patronizing and disrespectful. this shows how little true self respect men have for themselves and how little responsibility they have for their actions.
That's her house...that's a woman's domain. Chalky is thinking about the lack of education he missed because of segregation and being poor. Chalky never disrespects his wife in her house. She will make hopin John's,make love to him and it will be all forgotten.

I don't often cook rice because I'm not a very good cook and while it's easy to make, I always found it a bit boring. I often buy those microwave packs and drown them in sauce. The other day I made some with lemon juice, garlic, butter and a bay leaf. Cooked some kidney beans separately and stirred them through afterwards. It tasted INCREDIBLE and cost about 50p to make a huge pot. I've been eating it all week and I'm still not bored. Making jollof rice next!
Same. My family can have the best of the best as they see it. Me, I eat Hoppin John several times a week. Been eating it since I was a kid. Make it myself. Like soup beans, cornbread and collard greens.

He's supposed to be the bad guy here, what with the tantrum and the drinking, but how he feels is understandable. He asked for one specific dish from his childhood, and not a difficult one to make. Just the one. Nobody told him no until dinner was already served, and when he asked they basically told him "of course we didn't make that, it's not worthy of being served". Of course he feels looked down on in that moment. Because they *are* looking down on him there. "country ways". It's like not serving mac and cheese on a holiday because it's too low class a comfort food.
there are upscale mac and cheese dishes. even rice and beans is served to rich people in many countries. it has extra ingredients or its beans and rice are of a higher quality but peasant to rich to noble born still eats rice and beans.
it's mostly because they have a guest....you don't just put out what YOU want when entertaining guests....ESPECIALLY the son from the family you're about to marry into. He's a representative of another family...and one it's important to garner good relations with. It's about thinking of the guest and the occasion. You don't put out just what you like, you anticipate what the guest might like. Later on, if they reveal they like a different kind of food, THEN you can prepare that on a separate occasion. And, if you don't have the finer ingredients to pump up a simpler dish, then you don't prepare it. Save the simpler dishes for more common affairs.

Yeah...but its not about him. Assuming he approved the visit. If he approved the visit its none of his business what she cooks as long as its delicious, sanitary/edible. No1guy is right. Chalky married her to be a trophy "just like all the other rich, coloured women in town". He picked her for her appearance, background AND her MANNERS. Her class. If she makes a misstep it embarrasses the house. Chalkys wife was born around 1880. Do you knoooooow what upper class life was like in 1900-1950s? Assigned seats in church. Two days set aside to pay visits-one social. The other one to go to hospitals and nursing homes and volunteer. Or to take food to the poor part of town. Knitting societies. Letter writing campaigns. And if a woman isnt "up to standards" they dont invite her to this committee or that. Her kids dont get invited to playdates or get picked for plays or recitals. They might be bullied out of school. Di you remember what her prime directive was as 1920s wife to a Black businessman? To be a trophy and bring CLASS to Chalkys reputation. If you think Im exaggerating pick up a copy of "Miss Manners" or Emily Post from the 1920s. Or read about the "Petticoat Affair" tldr; if she loses status, he loses status.

Yeh. The part where his wife asks the younger guy to "forgive" her husband's "country ways" envoked anger in Chalky - it was similar to a person asking forgiveness when the dog he/she owns does something that better trained dogs wouldn't do. The response of the younger man saying "he understands" makes Chalky feel as if they think that he some lesser bieng that does not know how to condone himself. Comparissons could also be made of a Master and his Slave, Mother/Father and an immature child etc
I understand Chalky.....my father was raised very poor and in those times poor Mexicans in Mexico city would eat "migas de albanil" which was basically scrapes of tortillas mixed with egg and what ever was available, today my dad is no longer in those dire circumstances thanks to this great country that is America...but sometimes he still eats those same "Migas de albanil" my mother makes and resents if he perceives that people give him the wrong look for it.....he still has nor forgotten what its like to be poor but at the same time can't let go of the some of the food from his youth
I'm black but it's the same with me, my father goes out of the way to eat the food he grew up on. He never stops to consider the fact that he doesn't have to. If my mother tries to branch out too far, she and I like to cook and try different foods, he gets upset and will go to bed without eating.
She's got some nerve. He makes all the money, provides a home and food for his family, but she has the audacity to talk down to him for growing up "uncultured". Obviously, she married the wrong man.
He pretends to read. Wears expensive suits. Deals with people that undermine him. Can he at least be himself in his home. Not accepted by his own family. Too much
My dad is from the deep south and his family grew up poor. He is very fond of food from the south and makes rice and beans (hoppin' john's) a lot. My mom was from vietnam, and she was very fond of southern food and she made us Vietnamese food. Same thing with my dad. Respect for culture needs to go both ways, there's no such thing as lower class food
Always liked chalky, obviously he came from nothing but scratched, clawed and did everything he could to get to where he was and to support his family. But I can understand his wife wants a better life for their kids but there's no need to basically insult chalky by saying about his country ways.
Another thing to add that no one has mentioned, this takes place in 1920, 55 years after the Civil war and slavery ended. So that kid's grandma was definitely a slave. So when he says "that type of food" that his grandma would make he means slave food.
Love this sence always watch it when life get me down makes me proud to be a father who puts the food on the table and the roof over there heads regardless of how much I get in return.
I can’t stop watching this scene. This is pure film in its greatest form. The writing is perfection. The acting is phenomenal. The references all line up… So awesome.
there's a big difference in the two situations. the reason why chalky is incensed in this scene is because they tried to imply that what he grew up with wasn't good enough. he's trying to make the point that they shouldn't forget or dismiss what he went through so they can be able to have such a nice life.
All these years later and man is that a powerful scene. Chalkey is 100% right. He’s the breadwinner in that house. If he wants rice and beans on his table he gets it and a thank you for everything you do for us. “Country Ways”….Really?
hes resentful because earlier on in the episode he was criticized by his community and belittled by nucky. losing control of his own dinner was the last straw which caused him to lash out at his family and samuel. his alienation from his family is probably what caused him to take a liking to dun purnsley and make him his right hand man.
This scene is the scene for all who ate what was affordable, and the man point of view who provided it. I love this scene!!!! Reminded me of my father. What he asked for we ate. He was the provider. Touching and to the point for me. Always a pleasure seeing my OMAR/CHALKY . He never scared,🥰🙏
I'm glad the writers threw in some classism in a black family. Usually in these situations, the black characters/family's are a monolith who all live under the boot of some evil white character. But in this one, it shows how people of not just the same group, but the same damn family can have prejudices towards each other, which, in this case, is along class lines. Chalky's wife is obviously a cultured and intelligent black woman who feels 'above' a "field n-word", and her more refined mannerisms are inundated to her children. The straw that breaks the camels back is that none of them really show the gratitude or respect towards Chalky and how its his work, however rough around the edges he may be, provides them with the cultured, upper-middle-class lifestyle they enjoy.
That’s the point everyone is making it seem like he asked for an entire entree of hoppin John’s she could’ve easily made it for him as a small side dish.
I was treated like this when my girl brought me to her home. Her father hated me with a passion. He even asked her if i was all she could do? And he said i was ugly to my face. I felt so bad and ashamed. 10 years later before he died. He apologized to me and thanked me for loving his only daughter. He didn't want me to take away the one thing he ever loved. I cried because he now had 2 things he ever loved. This scene shakes me up.
If the man is good enough to marry, to have children with and provide, he is getting the food he wants. If he eats "country", everyone at the table is going to be eating "country." My only question for him would be: "Honey, would you like collards, cornbread and fried chicken with that too?"

I grew up so poor, I used to eat cheese and Ritz crackers for dinner, sometimes... today, I'd take the steak over that any day. I don't get the idea of romanticizing paucity. It was horrible.
I respectfully disagree, hes mad that his wife would make something "special" for the guests. They have not evolved at all unless they have guests and thats called frontin. Chalky wouldnt mind having Rice and Beans with his family or the guests. The wife is frontin.... Chalky doesnt like that fakeness.,
Everyone at that table was educated except Chalky. He’s a down-home country boy who married a light-skinned woman (a status-symbol in those days), and sent his kids to good schools. He wasn’t in their class
I totally get this scene. It was the hypocrisy. They were putting on a charade eating food like that; it's clear their normal food would be hoppin' john. Chalky disdained the hypocrisy. Of course his liquor no doubt contributed as well.
This is a scene that speaks volumes in a generations. Despite all the success and well-being that Chucky had achieved. He still has to face the fact that he is generational result of past slavery and the world is progressing before his very eyes. He does deserve respect for what he's achieved, but the lack of world education is reflected in this dinner table arena.
The realism and this dinner table scene is uncanny. I can feel every bit of it as winds of these times were passed down through my father and his mother. I do have it in me, but see no need to release any of that in the modern day Friday night.

Strong scene, powerful acting.

Breaking his back only to be looked down upon. Happens far too often.

I totally agree with highman58. I don't think it was Chalky's resentment toward the boy at all. I think his anger was more angled toward his family, who happens to be lighter skinned and better educated, for shunning his "country ways" and taste.

Chalky White = Top 10 Character on any show ever!
there's a big difference in the two situations. the reason why chalky is incensed in this scene is because they tried to imply that what he grew up with wasn't good enough. he's trying to make the point that they shouldn't forget or dismiss what he went through so they can be able to have such a nice life.

Couldn't she made some Hoppin Johns to go along as a side dish?
