For some context prior to this episode Chalky had already noticed subtle hints that his family viewed him as backward, country and uneducated. When his daughter asked him a school question his son incredulously stated "Why would you ask Dad?" And when he specifically requested a type of food for this dinner, his entire family gave each other side-eye glances like "we're not making that." Chalky feels like the odd man out with a sophisticated, educated and cultured family who looks down on him and his country ways despite the fact that everything they have is due to him and his country ways.
This had nothing to do with really wanting hoppin johns. It was Chalkys way of expressing his displeasure towards his wife for being a bit pretentious subtly implying that the food he grew up with was beneath them.
Simple...Chalky is NOT a hypocrite...his wife...is. She has served him and their family Hoppin' John the entire time they have been a family. She is ashamed to serve it to a guest...and that sets off Chalky.
She insulted his roots and in a really subtle way, showed what she really thought of her husband. That must’ve been upsetting, You don’t insult a mans roots.
Even a century ago, labelling "that type of food" was the ultimate in throwing shade. And people of 'class' have no ability to realize the transparency.
I totally agree with highman58. I don't think it was Chalky's resentment toward the boy at all. I think his anger was more angled toward his family, who happens to be lighter skinned and better educated, for shunning his "country ways" and taste. I think he feels he provides the life they enjoy and on his sweat & blood, yet is still looked down upon... In his own house within his own family no less. It's enough to deal with the outside worlds opinions but to feel a stranger in your own home
Powerful scene... The man works his a** so everyone in his family can have a better life. All he asked for was rice and beans, and his wife feels that that's inappropriate. She could have easy made rice and beans along with the rest of the meal. He had every right to be angry.
Rest easy, King. This scene was so much. A man deep in thought, turmoil from the trappings of taking care of his family. To see his family reap those benefits without understanding what has to happen for them to live the way they do. But also, to not recognize that there are benefits to actually acknowledge and be thankful for what is. There’s a fine line here.
My father is a old country boy from the deep south, born/raised during the great depression. He grew-up hungry. He made sure we, his wife/kids, ALWAYS had a fridge full of food. Truly, a great man/husband/father and friend.
I watched this scene a couple of times, felt intrigued and went and made some Hoppin John, and holy crap! I can see why he was pissed off, anybody who says they're above Hoppin John is out of their mind. Best bean dish I've ever had, hands down. Now where the damn hoppin john?

Wifey gets major side eye for that "Country Ways" comments.
Poor Chalky, disrespected in front of a guest in his OWN HOME.
Can’t believe this monumental actor is gone. RIP Michael K. Williams...

He wasn't mad at the boy he was mad at his wife
If Chalky White wants Hoppin' John, get the man some Hoppin' John dammit
"That a duck?"
What a scene. Chalky was an incredible character. Rip Michael K Williams.
You stay right there son. Inside the house...

Its a paradox that he made a success out of his life to make his family's life better only to feel out of place in the life he created for them
R. I. P. Michael. Couldn't have picked a better actor to play Chalky.
"You stay right where you are son right there INSIDE THE HOUSE" dam Chalk!
