The tragedy of Nucky is that he never paid attention to the details in his relationships. Nurturing partnerships generates loyalty, and loyalty is priceless. He wasted so much of his time chasing profit and completely forgot that his objective was power.

Instead, Nucky tried to help him escape safely. It almost didn’t work because Mayor Bader cut a deal with Narcisse behind Nucky’s back and the police almost killed him and Maitland. Also in season 5, Nucky gives him money while he’s a fugitive and lets him hide out at the club.

      Hal Jordan
Hal, I can't argue, because I've never actually been able to watch the show -- terrible, personal circumstances. All I know is what I've been able to infer from the clips.
But once upon a time (and still, I think), I had a broad knowledge of film, and if you like Michael Pitt (whom I agree is terrific), he has the lead in a great movie which I believe is his first -- Bernardo Bertolucci's 'The Dreamers', based on Bertolucci's own experience coming of age as an obsessed cinephile in the movie-mad Paris of the '68 Leftist student uprisings.
It's the only other thing I've seen Michael Pitt in (he plays an American college student in Paris), and it's a terrific film.
      Have a good day.

Nucky even said they can work something out, but Chalky seemed hell bent on going after Narciees at a certain angle that would expose the whole distributions and raise brows amongst all of them… they were helping each other out up until that point because it became pointless and highly ridiculous situation over a female that most likley was connected to Narcees to begin with .. in that world everyone is suspicious. What this scene shows from me is the parallels between both these characters both similar and indifferent. Nucky Thompson learned some hard lessons from the last two seasons prior about keeping his business all business. Yet he didn't see the enemy within his Gates later on till the end. As much as it pains me to say this, chalky white still a black man in the 1920s, with little to no power, with the only leverage he has that he's a means to in end. Nucky gives him only respect because he makes money for him. Chucky fails to realize that he thinks he has his loyalty because he saved him once. Nucky gives him a slight nod of understanding because he has something that he doesn't have, solid family unit that he throws away due to desire and lust.

Real drama in all different directions here. You feel betrayal for Chauky as he had been loyal to Nucky. But when Nucky asked him for proof, he had nothing to provide. So feeling Narcisse out actually seems like a wise next step. Especially since Chaukys judgment is questionable because of the girl.

Jazzin' baby blues are drivin' me insane There's nothing to them but that lonesome blue refrain But when that cornet and that flute begin Have you ever considered it was Purnsley acting alone? It was Narcisse.
    I know it.
That's what the girl says? I'm asking if you can prove it.
This ain't no court of law, Nucky.
That doesn't change the fact that you're asking me to impose a death sentence.
    I wasn't askin'.
    Let's get something straight here.
You move against Narcisse, you risk losing everything you have.
He ain't comin' after what's yours.
That's because I mind my business.
    - What that mean? - Look.
    - Let me get him in here, sit him down - What that mean? It means when I'm conducting business, I mind it.
    It and only it.
Not some piece of ass with a sugary voice, not my pride, my business.
Heard a lot of "we" last year.
    When you was in trouble.
    Now it just you.
How do you like your fucking nightclub, on the Boardwalk? You have any idea the bullshit I had to put up with? The strings I had to pull, the palms I had to grease to make this happen? Already said thank you by saving your ass.
And this place evens the score.
    You've got a family, Chalky.
    Children.
A wife who loves you, a daughter about to be married.
What we gonna do about Narcisse? Let me talk to him, feel him out before you do anything.
I'll give you a minute for that.
    Just.

      @TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 6 лет назад +1

I would say that Mariah Dillard, Cottonmouth and Diamondback's plot in Luke Cage season 1 is a parallel of Valentin Narcisse, Chalky White, and Dunn Purnsley's in Boardwalk Empire's fourth season. Cottonmouth's office in his club has the same layout/overlooking view as Chalky's office here. Mahershala Ali bears resemblance to Michael K. Williams, and Erik LaRay Harvey was in both shows, playing Purnsley and Diamondback.
