@@niceguyeddie6427 It was not really an insult. At one point every script for every Broadway musical had to be vetted with a guy who reported direct to the Kremlin or else they'd use their pull with the unions to shut down production. Scripts for movies, musicals, and stage were written by card-carrying CPUSA members like Dashiell Hammett, Lillian Hellman, and Arthur Miller.

That silent moment when Nucky talks about his decision being made easier and Gyp stops long enough to realize that he was singling himself out in a den of jackals was perfect. He's a good example of a guy who got where he is by being hyper violent and aggressive...but eventually that stops working. If you can't play the politics and diplomacy, you're never going to get far in the upper echelons, and viciousness isn't going to cut it when you've pissed off every single person in the room enough to want you dead. He just couldn't let anything even resembling an insult to him go, and that made him weaker than he was capable of perceiving. Hence, why he dies on a beach in a puddle of urine, choking on his blood after being stabbed by his own guys.
Yep, and as soon as he let on that he was lashing out from financial pressure he marked himself as prey. Everyone was laughing inside and wondering what kind of amateur clown only has one plate spinning at a time, and planning how to screw him over.
The only reason that he left this place not injured, or even not killed, is that he had Masseria behind his back. However, probably he wouldn't have got invited otherwise. There was no place for small players there.
@missbelled6700 not true, he is a capo for Joe masseria and they are businessmen with ties in crime. He is basically a soldier with more influence, while they know the business world, he knows violence. They know that he is dangerous and thats why he is even able to unsult them without being interrupted, except for Nucky who should probably have chosen to be a bit more tactical here, similar to rothstein, seeing who is behind gyp.

The most powerful and notorious criminal kingpin in New York and thus the nation. His protege, the future founder of the Mafia as we know it and arguably the most powerful crime boss in American history. The politically connected boss of Atlantic City. His top enforcer, a former IRA assassin. Wonder why Gyp doesn't make it out of the season alive? Wonder no more.

They should've had way more scenes like this. Less of the Gillian crap or the ones with Margeret. The only reasons why this series is just below the absolute top is because they shift away too much from the mob features. Luciano, Remus, Meyer,.. Their parts are way too small.
Couldn't agree more! they spent hours showing Gillian and Margret who could have ended their roles in the first season if it was up to me but not even a minute to show Arnold Rothstein's final years? not a minute to show how Charlie and Lanskey teamed up again?

Now that i think about it i bet the writers did it that way on purpose for subtle irony
Because remus was the wackest one in the room lmfao
In a way he kinda did by letting him know that regardless of everyone getting the same news, that they weren’t on the same level/boat. But it was meager compared to the blazing onslaught he served everyone else with. 😂😂😂
@@niceguyeddie6427 It was not really an insult. Remus thought his reaction was over the top, but Gyp's point was he is worse off than the others because he is not making as much money, hence not being in the same boat as the others. The news from Nucky will not set Remus back as much. But Gyp has to buy his booze from elsewhere and it will not be cheap for him either.
I think Remus was so insignificant to Gyp that he didn't notice he was really there lol
@@spinmaster0
It wasn't just that he wasn't making as much:
Gyp has to answer to Masseria, who'd naturally not be very thrilled to find out one of his underlings wasn't making as much dough for him.
The others are either their own bosses (Nucky, Rothstein, Yale, and Remus) or are working for Rothstein (Luciano and Lansky), so their main worry is money, not the ire of the boss they work for. One of them--Yale--isn't even affected one way or another: he was infamous for mainly serving cheap, low-grade stuff (hence Rosetti's insult).
Rosetti’s insults are the equivalent of today’s roasting. He’d be a problem at the lunch tables 😭😭

@sneksnekitsasnek hard to take rosetti serious after his first scene.
Lol I love how Rothstein just grins at the “dentist with the ether” line. He simply doesn’t view Rosetti as a threat. Let the dog bark if he wants.
Either that or its funny enough that even Rothstein cracks a smile.
Rosetti was no threat to Rothstein.
That grin was a form of submission. Rosseti owned the entire room.
So funny though. I don't know how they all kept from cracking up
@@thesunoversea Rossetti owned the room so much that no one in the room took him seriously and had Rosetti’s own men kill him.
Rothstein was a legitimately dangerous person, Rossetti was a poser who thought that being the loudest made you the strongest.
Rothstein's creepy smile at 1:52 is so awesome. He's gotta be thinking, "We'll see who's laughing when I'm done with you."
I love Charlie’s face at 1:43 you can totally tell he’s like “ oh fuck here we go” even Myers stopped smoking for a second and gave gyp that look. You can also see the pure rage in Charlie’s face after he’s called short pants.

I love how Rothstein just smiles at him. He's so cool-headed.
"I got money, you got booze. What can be simpler than that?"
Business is business.
New year, new rules.
@manco828 The moment Nucky uttered that line, he would have been in complete and utter trouble in that meeting. You don't casually dismiss long term powerful players and partners. I appreciate it is a show, and I would like to read about the real life Nucky Thompson and his dealings, but these incredibly delicate meetings would of course have been dealt with far more nuance and compromise for any losses.
For example, I have to believe that if Rothstein was the one solely supplied from herein, that there would have been an agreement upon deal that others at this table would suffer only so much of a mark up so as not to cause major infractions between parties.
Lmao when he went at Rothstein, laughed my ass off
Rosetti did a great job roasting the most powerful gangsters in America.

@nickys34 Are you kidding? NYC and Hollywood were both chock full of commies in the 20s and 30s. At one point every script for every Broadway musical had to be vetted with a guy who reported direct to the Kremlin or else they'd use their pull with the unions to shut down production. Sadly this show fell off after this season.
Bravo 👏🏼 that was well put

So, in order, these are the people Gyp insulted in this scene:
The gangster responsible for the deaths of Big Jim Colosimo and later Dean O'Bannion.
The most powerful and notorious criminal kingpin in New York and thus the nation.
His protege, the future founder of the Mafia as we know it and arguably the most powerful crime boss in American history.
The politically connected boss of Atlantic City.
His top enforcer, a former IRA assassin.

Best scene in the show. Arnold's smile is the best. Shows how crazy he is to think that's funny.
I don't think he actually thinks it's funny; I think he just wants to show that he doesn't feel threatned at all.
They should've had way more scenes like this. Less of the Gillian crap or the ones with Margeret. The only reasons why this series is just below the absolute top is because they shift away too much from the mob features. Luciano, Remus, Meyer,.. Their parts are way too small.
Absolutely. Nobody cares about Margeret. She is boring.
Srikanth Rongali I like Margaret, but they don't have her do many interesting things.
Couldn't agree more! they spent hours showing Gillian and Margret who could have ended their roles in the first season if it was up to me but not even a minute to show Arnold Rothstein's final years? not a minute to show how Charlie and Lanskey teamed up again?
R. David I find it odd that they cut rothstein out of the show for the last season (so far, I'm only 3 eps in). Maybe there was a scheduling conflict? He was an intresting character.
theEarlofChip No, stupid HBO urged them to wrap it up quickly because the ratings went down a bit so they jumped ahead a few years missing stories from the great depression, the rise of Capone, the first criminal conference in 1929 (a very big deal) and Arnold Rothstein's downfall and death.
Oh well, we did get to see Margret's relationship with the maids and her affair with Owen, very interesting stuff!
