Narrowboat Treasure Hunting | Gin, Rum, and Firewood foraging [Ep 160]

- Slowly heading back along the River Weaver towards the amazing Anderton Boat Lift I leave the floating pontoons at Northwich heading first to the water point which isn't too easy as a single handed boater (solo crew) due to the angle of the mooring. But with a bit of faffing I manage to get myself moored up in a way to be able to fill the water tank. I then continue to my mooring at the bottom of the lift where I head on a walk back to the canal and stumble across a fellow trade boat selling Gins, Whisky, Rum and preserves - What a magical find.

You probably know this already but to clean or keep clean a sooty glass on the log burner fire use a good big fistful of wet newspaper....works a treat...

What is the total water capacity on your boat? Have you ever run out?
About 1000 litres … I top it up often because if I let it go too low it takes 2 hrs to fill

A bit of sunshine makes all the difference. Do you ever wear a life jacket while on the river? It looked a bit precarious when you were filling your water tank .
Depends on the river and the flow … I did when doing the Ship Canal

Nb Sun Uppers were heading for the Harecastle turn left at Middlewich, have some ,Pussers Navy rum, as I'm ex Navy. If you see us shout out for a tot of gunpowder proof!!!

They put to sea - nearly
On the ship canal wide
The outlook was dreary,
Well, it was Merseyside
“Batten down the hatches!” our brave captain cried.
“The waves are five inches - it’ll be a rough ride!
“You’re mentioned in despatches,
Bon, for not staying inside”
They saw ships a plenty upon the high seas
But the coffers stayed empty, for none did they seize
“’Cos my nips are like bullets; I’m worried they’ll freeze!”
With ship canal conquered
There’s rivers to roam
So it’s straight up the Weaver
Really quite close to ’ome.
The river’s a good ’un,
Fair, deep, and wide
but a storm is a-gathering
upon the outside
The outlook is vile for our brave heroine;
But her firm grip on’t tiller
means no ‘Woops! She’s fell in.’
“Any port!” cries the skipper,
In time-honoured vein,
“If out of Jones’ locker,
“We want to remain!”
With skiful ship handling they are soon snugged up tight
But checking the lines goes on through the night
After three tarsome days
The storm does abate
The sun pokes out rays
Says Cap’n to mate
“Yay, the storm has all gone-ee
“It’s time for some fun!
That’s walkies for Bonnie;
Cue: Shots of her bum
A new day dawns, fellow pirates espied
A cruise up the river? “Too right!” Heidi cried
They weaved and they dodged the natives afloat,
’Til lodged in a tree, they were, with their boat
“They don’t like it up ’em,” she might well have said,
Corporal Jones’ innuendo, no doubt in her head.
“Don’t be rude!” she says swiftly,
Put that thought to bed.
Out came the cutlass and the jungle was slashed
And back down the river in triumph they dashed
Past natives they sped at four miles an hour
Using all the five horses of their Honda power.
They regained safe harbour
laden with treasures
A grand day out boating,
One of life’s greatest pleasures
The crew rise sharpish
at nearly four bells
But it’s toot that doth wake them
And a slight breeze, that smells
The crew goes ashore in search of fresh spoils
Spying spirits infused with marvelous oils
“Don’t mind if I do” says Cap’n to crew
“Though the sun’s not yet yardarm, I fancy a brew”
The gin is so tempting,
Colours swirling and rippling
But she keeps a firm grip,
On this morning’s tippling.
While keen to find fame,
Like Blackbeard and Morgan
It won’t be her fate er-lie
this fine mornin’
To be lying in the scuppers,
With a hosepipe on ’erm.
So soon they’ll cast off
For adventures anew,
Cap’n Heid and Bonnie
And their gi-normous crew.
“Well, I do like a big’un,”

Hello Heidi. You are simply adorable 😊. Vibrant personality, interesting explanations and a bright light in my day. Is there a way you could show the location of the canal as an overlay of England? With so many locks, canals and rivers on the CRT it would be helpful. There are many river boaters on RUclips but I don’t follow them, only you because your channel is the best.

So, if you happen to fall into the canal, how do you climb back out? All I see are steep banks and walls. Watching your YT channel makes me yearn for Pusser's rum. Haven't had it for years so I have to be satisfied with watching old Rum and Coca Cola Andrews Sisters videos!
I’ve showed me getting out the canal on previous videos … you can stand up in the canals as they just shallow ditches … rivers however are another matter

Another lovely vlog. How you LOOK is completely unimportant; it is how you FEEL that is relevant to you. I am surprised you made it on time to the Anderton Boat Lift after sampling your friend's wares (but as they were on the canal and not the river that probably was a good incentive to make sure you made your booking!). When Mum and I are together on her boat in the Autumn we work as a team to pick the fresh fruit on the banks that people on the towpaths cannot get to. She then blends them together to produce her "Jokers' Jelly", which is great!
