Part of me wishes they could've made the joke "It's going to be a windmill." That would've been a great joke and a great callback to the pictionary incident
my favourite part about it is the first two examples are a real stretch, like they can be taken as being racist but they’re pretty innocent things, but the “maze” is just so blatant and jarring.
Aaron's actually right for once. Bullying is a pattern of behavior, not a single action. That's part of what makes it hard to deal with, because an action that's no big deal in isolation becomes bullying when done repeatedly.
@@_BangDroid_ It's been three months since I watched the video, I don't remember what Eric did. But an action can be wrong/cruel/harmful and still not be bullying if it's not part of a pattern.
@@JenABlue-ed1bw I agree. And I guess I wasn't specifically asking you, although I did reply to your comment, yours was the highest rated comment on the topic. @@_BangDroid_ it’s definitely a terrible measure, speaking as someone who was a bloody enormous and very unclear about the rules. When I was bullied by someone the same age and reacted verbally or physically, it looked like a 13 year old shoving a 9 year old and teachers were horrified and unable to separate my height/ strength from my maturity level. When I got in an argument with an older friend and shoved her, and sent her flying, she was the one at fault somehow even though i had lost my temper in a normal friend argument. It’s a very odd way of measuring when it’s okay to use physical violence against another child
My favorite joke here is Jeff's willingness to stab Pierce to keep the trampoline a secret. Also the these are the first reactors I watched to notice that a chainsaw was being used to cut steel.
We are in the middle of one of the best stretches of episodes any show has ever put together. The next 4 episodes in particular are all 10/10s and I am so excited to see your reactions. In this episode, the Joshua reveal always gets me. The freaking "maze" tattoo is such a good gag.
“Back, back, back, freeze it, enhance…..enhance…..enhance………enhance…..STOP.” I can’t tell you how many times I have laughed at that in both this and other tv shows and movies.🤣🤣🤣
17:55 I think Calvin hit it on the head in the Bully discussion when he said that if you tease someone for your own entertainment then it's bullying. If you're just fighting back against a bully, that's not bullying. But if you're picking on that bully because you enjoy seeing them suffer, then it is. I don't think it necessarily needs to be habitual in that case, though I doubt it ever really happens without being at least somewhat habitual.
I love when they do that. It's all a continuation from the debate ep in season 1 where he is able to predict the study groups actions before it happens. Similar gag was done in Contemporary American Poultry where Abed's whiteboard in his dorm room features some foreshadowing and character traits for each of the members of the study group.
Bullying is about power differentials, not specific individual actions. It's intimidation, harassment, 'picking on' people weaker than you. If two very similar kids who otherwise have little interaction happen to get into a fight, the one who wins didn't 'bully' the other.
Aaron is so right. Bullying is a pattern. You can be mean and that’s not bullying that’s just being mean, but making a habit of it or doing it to multiple people is bullying.
I love this episode because it shows how good S2 Community's writing is. The situation is so toned down compared to the episodes we'd gotten previously and really it can be placed almost anywhere in the season -- it's interchangeable, barring Pierce's injury, and is just a great efficient and creatively hilarious episode of a sitcom. It has satire / an homage but really the different plots aren't necessarily connected, yet they work so well! I love the scene in the study room of seeing the difference in attitude between the girls, Jeff and Troy, and Pierce. It gives off the feeling of them all having their own adventure and then they reconvene in the study room and we see the new dynamic play out. I love this show
It was about a decade or so ago that the definition of "literally" was amended to include the figurative use common today. The problem is "literally" has no synonyms. Which means we no longer have a word in the English language that exclusively means what "literally" once did.
I'm with Aaron on this one, if you only do it to one bully once then you're not bullying them, that's not habitual! Even if you're doing it to lots of different bullies, if each person is 1 incident that's not bullying, it's just...fighting ^^

Re the bully getting beat up: it's weird that when we were kids, the only way adults could think of to deal with bullying was to make us handle it internally.
Bullying is just a plural for harrasment in my view, anyone can harras someone, but bullying is going out of your way to make someone uncomfortable with daily environment of intimidation.

Might be better served applying judgments & actions to specific criteria rather than trying to find specific criteria for the label and applying judgment/action to the label.
When Pierce makes the "gay joke" the object of laughing is not the joke, the object of laughing is Pierce. We are laughing at Pierce for being bigoted and at Jeff for not reacting when normally he would. Same when Abed says the fat joke to Shirley, the funny thing is that Abed says that as something that a bitch would say and then Shirley's reaction. The subject of a joke is not the same as the object of laugh. Nobody is laughing at what Pierce said, the context is everything. One of the great things about Community is that the characters are deeply flawed people that we can like despite not agreeing with their views. Shows like Brooklyn 99, while still funny, fail at creating multidimensional characters that are more relatable because their flaws are superficial. She is too perfectionist, he exercises too much, he is too perfect, he is too much of a friend, she is too badass; for me that is boring and unless the jokes are good they don't make me laugh unlike Community's character that can make anything funny because they are delivering jokes in multiple levels. Things are funny because a particularly character said it, in a particular moment, and to a particular person who in time reacted in a particular way; just like the "gay jokes", the "fat jokes" and the "racist jokes" in this episode. The writing is brilliant.
This is a great episode, and it sets up some things. Abed's HUD is full of references to future events. Now that Pierce is in a wheelchair, I know we're getting close to one of the best episodes in the show, and it has to be coming soon so I am very hyped to see your reaction. Unfortunately, as excited as I am for a few of the upcoming episodes, this is also the beginning of what I'd call the assassination of the character Pierce. I don't know if this was the height of the difficulties with Chevy Chase, or just the beginning of them, but the writers really don't seem to like that guy and really ruin the character for me. I liked Pierce most when he was the rich playboy past his prime, dispensing bits of wisdom to the rest of the characters one-on-one, while being the clueless, inadvertently offensive guy in the larger group. From this episode onward, they really take his character to a dark place. He actually gets quite mean. This is not a Pierce I'm a fan of, from a story writing perspective. It's just so unnecessary, and it feels like the real world is coming into the writing too much. But, that said, the best of Community is yet to come.
Well said. Ironically the show gets funnier when he's in the wheelchair but his character definitely gets "assassinated" miss the old Pierce too. Season 3 helps a bit.
