the beetlejuice joke is actually a 3 season long setup, they say it first in 1x16 again in 2x8 and now in 3x5 and thats when he appeared, after they said his name 3 times
It wasn't so much a 3 season long setup - as it was that one of the writers realized it was going to be the third time "Beetlejuice" was said in a Community script, so they had the idea to have him walk by. Regardless, it's briliant.
I love that Calvin, in his uniquely Calvinesque overconfidence, managed to flip that into "Beetlejuice has been in EVERY SINGLE EPISODE" even though that's very demonstrably not true lol.
I've always thought that this was one of best episodes of Community that doesn't get the attention it deserves. The character work in this episode is fantastic and I wish more shows would have their writers do exercises like this even if they never become episodes.
Jeff: You Britta'd Britta Abed: Way to pull an Abed Shirley: I don't get it Jeff: Shirley don't Pierce Pierce: I don't get it! What an efficient summary of these characters and their roles in the story.
"No! Wait, ha! You fools. By sewing my butt to my chest, you’ve given me boobs I can touch all day!" - When Joseph Campbell wrote "The Hero's Journey" surely this is what he had in mind.
Community in MCU (plus old Marvel stuff): Russo Bros as directors, Jeff as Bank guy in Spider-Man 2 (Toby McGuire), Abed as tech drone in Winter Soldier, Dean as the guy at MIT in Civil War, Chang as security guard in End Game, Shirley working at the Army base / SSR base in End Game, Troy as the guy who gets webbed to his car with his thawing groceries in Spider-Man 1 (MCU Spiderman), and apparently Britta britta'd her audition to be Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy.
There’s also some MCU actors that were in minor Community roles. Brie Larson and Kumail Nanjiani are the only ones that come to mind but I’m sure there are others
You guys have the best or (at the very least) my favorite explanation for why Abed scored as the sane one; usually I see people go through such hoops to “justify” it - buts yours makes the most logical sense. He knows what the “correct answers” are, because he can modify his behavior. He’s very accurate when it comes to predicting people’s future actions, because he’s great as observing people, which allows him to be an excellent mimic, especially when it comes to his friends. Not a real spoiler - but in a future episode Abed makes a comment on the normal behavior of practicing smiling in the mirror, so one knows how or when to do it. So, your explanation works out perfectly, in my opinion.
And I know I’m looking way too deeply into this, but that does indicate Abed feels very comfortable with his friends, as he doesn’t put an act on for them.
I don't know if you guys paid close attention to it, but the closing dialog ends up using almost everybody's name as a verb. It's quite funny: Britta: We should never make the Britta of Britta-ing each other's feelings. Pierce: You're using it wrong! Jeff: Wow. You Britta'd "Britta'd." Abed: Yeah, way to pull an Abed. Shirley: I don't get it. Jeff: Shirley, don't Pierce. Pierce: I don't get it! [indistinct] Jeff: Well now you're Shirleying.
Love the Baseketball talk. And funny you mention it being like Airplane, when the director was David Zucker, who was one of the directors of the first Airplane movie.
That sudden onset monotone scream Annie does in the Jeff story at the end is so fckin funny. Annie has some good screams throughout the show but this one's probably my fave lol. Too bad they cut right around it :(
I believe this episode is the first appearance of the song Daybreak in the show, the song Abed is humming during his story. Most of the music budget for this season was spent getting Roxanne for Remedial Chaos Theory, so Daybreak features heavily throughout the rest of the season.
When Annie tells us all she has on her iTunes only had the BEETLEJUICE soundtrack, it was the third time over the course of the series Beetlejuice's name was said (first by Prof Slater, making fun of Britta's name, the 2nd time was in the bottle episode, Britta talking about Jeff's underware Stripey beetlejuice number") say his name 3 times and Beetlejuice appears
You guys should definitely watch Community bloopers. They have one for every season! It’s awesome when you can recognize every scene that the blooper came from
Makes me think of the commentary tracks on Kevin Smith DVDs back in the day. They always referred to Ben Affleck as Phantoms Ben Afleck. Cracked me up every time.
I know she's pretty young etc etc but Annie looks incredible both in her werewolf story and in the blue during the Magnum Pierce story. Love the ep overall but it's no Epidemiology
I just had the same realization about Spider-man 2 like this weekend. I've been going through MCU with a family member who missed out on most of it and before No Way Home we started watching the old Spider-man movies so they could get the references and I did like a double or a triple take before going "That's Jeff."
If you look closely, in the story Britta tells toward the end, the book that Britta is reading is "Warren Piece" instead of War & Peace, because she wants to sound smart, but isn't actually an intellectual.
I don't say this often, but I'm with Aaron on the "Fixing v Modifying debate." If my car breaks down and it requires a part be replaced to get working again, it has been fixed.
“He had to watch his own flesh dissolve in her stomach” Eric: is there light down there? Aaron: vampires have dark vision Eric: oh right duh. I love nerds so much.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. So. Said three times, duty fulfilled. - "I have an overactive imagination and sometimes I remember the wrong thing." Give me fife.
Each story briefly sums up the character telling it: Britta’s was rebellious, protested against social norms, and got some what messed up Abed’s was calculating, emotionless but still funny, and showed everything as one big film cliche Annie’s started to act sexualized but grew darker with a personal grudge Troy’s was filled with child like wonder and was being cool in his own way Pierce and Shirley’s go without saying Finally Jeff’s was short and made for an angle
Fixed is often used as a term for modifying like and example Grand master flash invented the queing system for records for DJing One would say " he fixed it so you can line up different tracks"
In addition to Joel Mchale being in Spider Man 2, other Community characters have made appearances in Marvel projects: Danny Pudi's (Abed) in The Winter Soldier, he appears as one of the people in the SHIELD headquarters P.A. room whenever Cap makes his speech; Yvette is also in the elevator during Cap and Iron Man's extra timetravel plot in Endgame.
I personally always saw the relationship between Jeff and Abed as the core of the group. I know most will say its Abed and Troy, but those two have a codependent/complimentary relationship. Jeff and Abed are REAL equal friends. They're the first two to meet in the series and have a weird understanding about the group. I always thought they were the only two real sane people in the group, and they know it lol. Watch the series with that in mind, I'm sure you'll pick up on it.
I always assumed that he did it again and actually took it seriously and that’s what we see at the end because why would Britta even bother to run it through again if she knew he did it randomly
So glad Eric caught the Beetlejuice joke. That was the third time they said his name, thus... Appearance. Keep paying attention to the background. There's an entire background story with a couple.
Damn, they talked over the rest of the ending gag. One of my favorite moments from the show. "Way to pull an Abed." "I don't get it." "Shirley, don't Pierce." "I don't get it!" Just another example of the layered, snappy, clever writing that elevated this show's humor.
Things are fixed if they work the same as they did before. It’s modified if it serves either a new purpose or the original one but with an added bonus.
Here is the genius of Community. The reason Beetlejuice walked through the background in this episode is that the word Beetlejuice was mentioned twice before in previous episodes. This is the third mention of the word and thus he appeared. It's a joke that literally spans three seasons.

Aaron Brittaed "fix it."
the beetlejuice joke is actually a 3 season long setup, they say it first in 1x16 again in 2x8 and now in 3x5 and thats when he appeared, after they said his name 3 times
Came here to say this… brilliant!
They discuss that in the reaction. Calvin looked it up

@@Wolf6119 that could’ve been a joke. although if it isn’t, that’s such a widely incorrect statement to make
“What’s the blonde’s name? Bitter? Butter? Beetlejuice” - season 1
“Don’t you usually wear the stripey, turquoise Beetlejuice number?” - season 2
"Gay Marriage!!" And "YOU DONT WANNA BE BARIUM-SULPHATED" when Pierce has the fire extinguisher will always take me tf out
8:11 This scene always cracks me up. Man the Dean never has a weak appearance. He never fails.
You guys finally got introduced to the unofficial community song Daybreak by Michael Haggins
It hasn't been on the show until now? Why I remember it came way before third season.
I've always thought that this was one of best episodes of Community that doesn't get the attention it deserves. The character work in this episode is fantastic and I wish more shows would have their writers do exercises like this even if they never become episodes.
I think it gets lost in the shuffle because the episode right before it is legendary. But I agree, great character work in the episode.
Jeff: You Britta'd Britta
Abed: Way to pull an Abed
Shirley: I don't get it
Jeff: Shirley don't Pierce
Pierce: I don't get it!
What an efficient summary of these characters and their roles in the story.
Omg this is so underrated! I always love hearing that exchange
"No! Wait, ha! You fools. By sewing my butt to my chest, you’ve given me boobs I can touch all day!" - When Joseph Campbell wrote "The Hero's Journey" surely this is what he had in mind.

Happily, she at least got to play Supernova in Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender
Donald Glover was playing Miles Morales's uncle
There’s also some MCU actors that were in minor Community roles. Brie Larson and Kumail Nanjiani are the only ones that come to mind but I’m sure there are others
@@liamr4117 Excellent point. Walter Goggins is another example. Thanks for expanding this bit of trivia!
@@amara139 how could I forget him! That’s one of the funniest episodes too!

I just want to feel as much satisfaction for once in my life as Annie does after finishing telling her story lmao
The debut of “Daybreak”
Currently humming it
And the best use of Daybreak. Second best, strangely enough, happens in the gas leak year. In the tag at the end of the Puppet therapy episode.
Good catch by Eric seeing ya boi Beetlejuice in the background
Did you guys know that Shirley and Chang are also in Avengers Endgame which is also directed by the Russo's
And Abed's was in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Troy was in Spider-Man: Homecoming. And Britta and Annie have directed stuff for Marvel
And the Dean was in Civil War
Eric nodding everytime annie takes off clothing 💀
The ‘Adam driver you killed Han Solo’ is from the 2019 Tony awards beetlejuice performance
I don't know if you guys paid close attention to it, but the closing dialog ends up using almost everybody's name as a verb. It's quite funny:

Another banger of an episode! Annie's story was probably my favourite. There was a twist!
Love the Baseketball talk. And funny you mention it being like Airplane, when the director was David Zucker, who was one of the directors of the first Airplane movie.
They said beetlejuice once each season of the show. This episode was the third time they said it and he appeared
Abed is in Captain America Winter Soldier
And Troy on Spiderman
And the dean(jim rash) is in Civil War. And Shirley is in End Game
And Annie and Britta have both directed stuff for Marvel
And once again, Pierce is the only one left out
Chang is in Endgame too!
That sudden onset monotone scream Annie does in the Jeff story at the end is so fckin funny. Annie has some good screams throughout the show but this one's probably my fave lol. Too bad they cut right around it :(
Same lmao that scream always takes me out

Ladies and gentlemen, the smooth sounds of Daybreak by Michael Haggins.
How long did it take people to figure that out?
You guys should definitely watch Community bloopers. They have one for every season! It’s awesome when you can recognize every scene that the blooper came from
GAY MARRIAGE!!! 😈
"Vampires have darkvision" got me, well done Aaron
"Laughter is the best medicine"
Arron's body: "and I took that personally"
When you “Eric” something is when you add a “D” to a name that doesn’t belong
I’ve seen an interview somewhere where Joel McHale introduced himself as a cast member of Spider-Man 2, cracked me up
Makes me think of the commentary tracks on Kevin Smith DVDs back in the day. They always referred to Ben Affleck as Phantoms Ben Afleck. Cracked me up every time.
Modifying would change its initial function. They would fix the jet so it could fly again AND modify it to allow them to sit side-by-side.
I know she's pretty young etc etc but Annie looks incredible both in her werewolf story and in the blue during the Magnum Pierce story. Love the ep overall but it's no Epidemiology

This episode is the start of one of the best running gags in the series
I will always love the line 'Aw man, end of days?"
If you look closely, in the story Britta tells toward the end, the book that Britta is reading is "Warren Piece" instead of War & Peace, because she wants to sound smart, but isn't actually an intellectual.
Oh, I agree so much with Calvining and Aaroning. The reasoning is perfect! That's how you can tell they're real friends.
I don't say this often, but I'm with Aaron on the "Fixing v Modifying debate." If my car breaks down and it requires a part be replaced to get working again, it has been fixed.
Loved the reaction guys.
The begin of community and daybreak!
Aaron-ing is yelling random things you just heard on a show.
3:58 the start of something beautiful
Comedy comes in threes; beetlejuice, beetlejuice, beetlejuice 😂
“He had to watch his own flesh dissolve in her stomach”
Eric: is there light down there?
Aaron: vampires have dark vision
Eric: oh right duh.
I love nerds so much.
Dont forget Shirley was in the elevator in Infinity War acting suspicious about Cap and Tony
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
So. Said three times, duty fulfilled. -
"I have an overactive imagination and sometimes I remember the wrong thing." Give me fife.
I finally understand why Eric says chapucin instead of Capuchin monkey.
This episode has so many of my favourite moments.
Troy is in the new spider man movies he's the criminal with the unfreezing stuff on the car when Peter asks about crime
DAYBREAK IS FINALLY REVEALED
3 seaons to set up a beetlejuice joke. I love Harmon. LOL
I wonder if the Blind Wave crew have ever Britta-ed anything before?
There's community members in many marvel movies. Abed, Shirley, Chang and Dean have appeared in the MCU
Each story briefly sums up the character telling it:
Britta’s was rebellious, protested against social norms, and got some what messed up
Abed’s was calculating, emotionless but still funny, and showed everything as one big film cliche
Annie’s started to act sexualized but grew darker with a personal grudge
Troy’s was filled with child like wonder and was being cool in his own way
Pierce and Shirley’s go without saying
Finally Jeff’s was short and made for an angle
I believe Abed has super sanity.
He is a sitcom character that knows he's in sitcom.
Fixed is often used as a term for modifying like and example
Grand master flash invented the queing system for records for DJing
One would say " he fixed it so you can line up different tracks"

The dean is in Civil War as the, I believe, the dean of MIT when Tony is speaking there.
And Troy is in Homecoming as the criminal webbed to his car while his groceries thawed.

It may be to two characters Dan Harmon put the most of himself into.
On that Fixing vs Modifying argument.
You fix something when it's broken but you modify something even if it's not broken.
mmm... seductive Annie... I think Abed is really the most well adjusted and happy with himself. That's why he scored the best.
The third time BeetleJuice appeared if I'm not mistaken
One of my favorite episodes of the season
That was the 3rd time they said bettlejuice in the series so then he appeared
10:52 fixing it could mean making it work to suit their new needs.
There's a community Easter egg in,, Spiderman Into the Spiderverse"
See if you spot it 😊

Beetlejuice walked by in the background because this was the third reference to Beetlejuice in Community.
fun fact this was the first community episode I watched
The whole deaf part of the video is relatable. I hear well enough to be a "what?" machine.
9 more till the best community episode ever
