The reason Pierce made it all the way to the end is because his mother died 3 months ago. He feels lonely this time of year like he said and Abed knew that .
Seeing Aarons realization of what today meant to Abed is what makes me keep falling in love with this show. It goes from "over the top" to "right to the heart" without missing a beat
Fun Fact: All the Christmas versions of the study group are how Abed actually thinks of all of them. Jeff is just a talking head (only good for talking and nothing else), Troy is a soldier because he is very loyal and will fight for his friends, Britta is a malfunctioning robot who keeps trying to fight the system but has no faith in herself or he friends, Shirley is a big baby who wants HER version of Christmas or no Christmas, Annie is a ballerina who is graceful but fragile, and Pierce is a teddy bear who wants and deserves more love than he gets. Also Dan Harmon said that he made the “The meaning of Christmas is Lost” joke because he loved Lost when he first saw it but gave up halfway through the series because and I quote “I know when I’m being dicked around” because he knew the show runners had never really planned out the show.🤣
Shame Harmon gave up on lost. The writers had the ending in mind but ABC forced them to do an extra season hence why it was dragged out. Even with the padding lost is an exceptional show
@Big Picture Guys I used to work with one of the early writers. The creators of Lost kept saying they had it all planned out. He said they were making it all up as they went along and even had to do many reshoots to older episodes, which had yet to air to make the new made-up stuff make more sense. I have up in season three as I knew what tie it was based on the scene. It had slipped into a hard pattern. The flashbacks were all at the same time. You knew that was 5 minutes left with the slowmo wordless montages. And then I hated the finale, which I won't get into.
Lost was one of those shows* whose ending wasn't just bad, it was **retroactively bad** because it confirmed that the showrunners really had no overall story in mind and that even the 'ohh, what might this mystery be about' really were meaningless. *see also: BSG (remake), Dexter, How I Met Your Mother
@TAO TOLOGY I think they knew how they were going to end How I Met Your Mother as all the kids' scenes were shot in S1. They just didn't know when. The two best series finales I have seen were I Married Dora and The Shield, but for completely different reasons. I Married Dora was a bad sitcom canceled during S1. This is somewhere in RUclips, but in the finale, the father is about to board a plane fir a new job and leave his kids and new wife Dora behind. He walks off, then returns. Kid -:What happened?" Dad - "It got canceled." "The plane?" "No, the show." They turn to the camera and wave goodbye to the audience. The Shield was just perfect and I didn't see it coming. Breaking Bad was also excellent, but I saw it coming.
On the topic of Dupa, Danny Pudi is actually half Polish on his mother side iirc, just like Abed is, and thus his Polish is pretty great, which lead to few lines in Polish sprinkled throughout the series.
Last December, my mom died. Community uploaded this episode to their RUclips Channel, so I thought "Maybe this will get my mind off it." I completely forgot that it was about Abed coming to terms with the fact that his mother wasn't coming back. It hurt. It hurt a lot.
"The meaning of Christmas is the idea that Christmas has meaning" is, somehow, one of the most touching and profound things I've ever heard about Christmas.
The metaphor is specifically "Season 1 of LOST" which the season finale is them looking down a hole. While it make sense for the production side of season 2, it is a huge lack of pay off for people who had to wait months to find out what's down there after spending most the season teasing it. It's not speaking to the actual ending of the series which did have pay off, whether or not you liked it is a different question.
Oh that makes sense. I didn't watch LOST as it was coming out so it didn't feel like lack of pay off because I just watched the next episode. Also, love the ending of the series btw :)
I think you're right in this, in that it was referring to the end of Season 1 of Lost. Though I disagree the whole show had payoff. Sure it had an ending but whether it was payoff I certainly wouldn't argue.
I watch this episode every year around Christmas time. I tear up every time they sing that song at the end. I love how much they care about each other in this show. It's why I think Community is better than any Friends or HIMYM type of show.
Epidemiology to Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas is the best string of episodes of a TV show I've ever seen. There are obviously a lot of other great individual episodes and great runs of two or three episodes, but it's mindblowing to me that they came in day after day for a couple of months and came up with these incredible concepts, airtight writing and flawless acting.
Such a crazy and cute episode. ❤ I always have tears in my eyes when Abed says on the train: "We always watch together on December 9th. Always, always..." You don't have a NEW family, just a bigger one !!!

I didn’t think It would interest me until one evening when I came across the episode where Aeryn Sun turned in the man she had fallen in love with to the peacekeepers. A powerful and emotionally devastating story that I couldn’t turn away from until it broke me down and I was full-on sobbing near the end. 10:07 This is a common argument I've never understood for why people think Jesus was born in the summer. Do you think sheep stay inside drinking cocoa all winter? They literally grow the material we make coats and blankets out of. Plus, while it does sometimes drop below freezing in the winter in Israel, it rarely snows, so there's still food for the sheep to eat. And it's not like predators and thieves hibernate, either. The Bible is silent on what time of year it was, and shepherds in the field is not a good indication of the season.

@5:30 Abed kicks Britta out for trying to give him what he needs instead of what he wants. And has the gull to make her cry by saying she's "programmed badly" when he's the one literally having a psychotic break from reality because things aren't the way he wants them to be all the time. And that's why I hate Abed. Just a selfish man child hypocrite who needs to be enabled at all times.
