I have to say this,Our ride on broke down,so i resorted to pulling out a lawn mower we had in shed for i would say ten years.Living in Ireland we need to act when the sun shine`s as it`s a rare occasion....It never really worked to be honest, that`s why it ended up in the shed, anyway,i came a cross your videos and i took it apart and followed all your videos.....To my shock i got it started!!!!!!! All thanks to your clear, concise videos....Thanks so very much for all your informative help....My other half works abroad and he was shocked i done it..I think we are the only people on the planet with this lawn mower as i cant find any info on it.......Thanks a million Ruth x

Hurricane Irene is bearing down on us here in Eastern NC. I had someone who was going to throw out a generator that had not been cranked in 8 years. Instead I got it , changed the spark plug, and followed your video. She fired right up and we are good to go when the power goes out....Thanks!!

Awesome video! Got an old lawn mower from my grandfather as a house warming gift. Only used half a season, but has been sitting for 12 years. He had drained the gas, but when I went to fire it up, gas just poured out of the air filter though the carb. Other research told me it was the float. This video was so easy to follow! Took of the bowl, cleaned it and the exposed part of the float, and was good to go! Thanks for the video

Thank you so much for this video instruction. After I changed spark plugs, air filter, fuel, removed rust off the coil/flywheel, etc.....my mower still would not start. But when I simply removed and cleaned and reinstalled the bowl around the carb float, and the mower started right up and now runs as new!! Awesome!! Thank you again!

Kudos to you donyboy73....and to others like you who take the time to share their knowledge....
I have zero small engine experience.....And after being in storage for nearly 10 months, my Troy Bilt Storm 2840 snowblower was DOA today.
Your vid taught me enough to get the carb off and give it a good cleaning....I just got it all back together, filled the tank, engaged the electric starter and it fired right up.
    Thank you so much!

Saw a mower on Facebook today, "free to collector, non starter spares or repair" it has this same engine. It already had a new spark plug so I searched and found your video. I stripped the carb and did exactly what you did.........and the mower started first time! Happy days and cheers for the vid mate. All the best from Swansea, UK.

I dismantled and cleaned the carburetor on my B&S 675 yesterday. A little different but close enough. I found the needle had some gunk on it it took 5 minutes to scrape it off and burnish with a very fine sanding stick. I sprayed starter fluid in rather than carb cleaner then cleaned the jets the same way. I needed a replacement air filter/carburetor gasket and found it at a Sears parts/repair shop.
The procedure was very easy and the mower runs like it was new. Thanks very much!

i have an XR600 that I had not run in about 3 years. A mechanic friend of mine told me to make sure I drain the old fuel out of it before starting it..
I should have listened. I put fuel in it today and took it for a run. Petrol was flowing out of the tube off the carb.
Seeing this vid I have the confidence to take the bowl off and give it a clean. Fingers crossed that is all i need to do.
    Great video.

    Hello Dony,
You and Steve have helped me a lot over the year with y'alls well narrated and informative videos. I have made some different carburetor/brake cleaner tips for different angles and size jets/passage ways. I use a lighter or torch 2 barely heating the red spray extension tube and make the sizes and shapes I need. I heat them about a 1/2" from the end and stretch it 2 desired size and or direction for example a 90 degree angle for the little holes inside the carburetor. By stretching the red tubes makes the outside and inside diameter of them smaller. Easier 2 get in those small jets and your carburetor/brake cleaner can will last twice as long. Thank y'all from (D.R. Small Engines) and keep it up!

I have a similar Briggs and Stratton engine on my mower and it was giving me problems starting. It would start and run and not start again if I shut it off. I took it apart and removed and cleaned just the carb. bowl and nut. I wasn't confident enough to remove the whole carb so I just sprayed cleaner thru the hole where the butterfly is. Got it back together and it runs fine. Thanks so much for your video. It helped a lot!

Excellent how-to, many thanks. First time really disassembling any carburetor. My problem was that it was very dirty inside, clogged jets (especially the jets on the screw) worn seat and corroded needle. Originally it wouldn't run an leaked gas from the carb. Just got finished with it and its working great. A small drill but works well for removing the old seat, its the method I used. Also for anyone wondering the needle/seat kit is part # 398188 and costs about $5.

I have this exact same carb setup which has no idle and runs rough. Experience over the years tells me to do exactly what you have shown but it's nice to see all the steps illustrated. Small motors have carb problems all the time due to running in dirty environments and sitting a lot. A fuel tank can draw moisture over time, even if it is covered so I suggest the use of "Stabil" gas treatment for stored motors, especially 2-strokes! Very good job on your video. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

Great job! I have a lightly used 1100 (on a big chipper/shredder) with the float carb and when I turn the gas shut off to the on position, gas pours out of the air cleaner tube. Previous owner probably stored old fuel in the tank without Stable. Figure it is the float hanging up with the needle suspect too. Have the confidence to remove carb after watching your video twice and will grab a rebuild kit and have at it! Many thanks!

Donyboy what a fantastic video! My mower is 23yo, it started on the usual 3rd pull and cut about 8 ft before stalling, restarted fine only to stall again as previous, third time mower wouldn't catch. I assumed the carb needed work as the plug was dry after several attempts and it was the first tank of fuel this season. Your video made this task so simple. Only difference was my carb did not have the side hole but all seemed open. Reassembled and same problem, no start, plug dry, bowl wet. Help

Awesome, thanks! I was ready to buy a rebuild kit or a complete replacement carb, but tore down the carb and cleaned everything thoroughly (esp the jets+bowl) instead - my B&S Quantum 50 then started second pull on the rope and had the smoothest idle I've ever seen from it (bought second hand) and allowed me to finally get the thing in tune. Subsequent starts have occurred on the first gentle pull on the rope.
This is the same engine that wouldn't run for more than 20 seconds this morning!

at all . My thought was to see if you had a video on internet
about this machine ....And like for me you do have one !!
As i watched and listened your advise
I pulled the carburetor apart it was dirty as well the petrol
in the tank .You mentioned the adjustment screw to come
out ONE and HALF TURN ... Is this the same for our
lawn mover too? Because the screw was ONE TURN OUT .
Thank you TONY D from Australia .

Thank you very much for posting this. It made me see how easy carb maintenance can be, so I did it and got my lawn tractor running again. I used a lot of your ideas and they worked. Many, many thanks for your help!!!

Great thank you. Cleaned the carb out and found some corrosion . Also found a lot of debris in the pipe from the fuel tank to the fuel valve/tap before the filter. Change this pipe too and it now it runs really well.

Thanks for the video. I'm about to do a carb rebuild on a Quantum 5 HP. You've saved me a bunch of time. I usually just figure it out as I go along. Take care.

Thanks for the video. My 20 year old lawn mower would start but not stay running. After cleaning the carb and replacing the fuel line it runs great!

Thanks for your time and effort in putting this together and making it available. I just bought a used mower and this is pretty much all I think it needs, and I haven't torn into a small engine in years. This reminded me of all the stuff I had forgotten. Cheers!

I'm at a loss. Currently mower (B&S 650 series) will start with starter fluid sprayed in and then immediately shuts off. I replaced spark plug for good measure as well. So far, I've pulled the bulb and cleaned the bold like you showed. It was in fact gunked up. I cleaned the jets. Gas seems to be making it into the bulb area ok and all. I put it back together and same thing. As far as I can tell, everything is cleaned like you showed (First time trying this so...) But no luck.

This is great except for one thing. How did you get the engine so clean before you start the job? Dish washer?

Thank you. Not the same engine but it gives me an idea of what to look for and more importantly what tools I will need. Hopefully the carburator cleaning and valve adjustments will do the trick !
Thanks for reponding so quickly !

Glad I eventually found your video! Unlike other videos for 3.5 Briggs engines this looks exactly like the one on my 1990 mower. It's a 3.5 HP Briggs and Stratton Max. Gas went bad last winter and it stalls constantly now. I almost pulled the trigger on a new mower since I thought cleaning the carb would be complicated but your instructions make it look simple.
Great job! One of the best instructional videos I've seen.
What's the best way to winterize the engine?

Many thanks form the informative video. My Harrier 48 has been good for the last 18 years (with regular servicing, last time a year ago) but has just developed a fault. Once primed it will run for a 5 secs or so and then stop so assume a dirty carb or fuel line ? Have some confidence now to clean the carb thanks to you and hopefully will fix it. Any other tips welcomed ?

Almost a million views on a video about cleaning a small engine carburetor! Well done you! Very useful. It seems to be the same carburetor as on my rototiller engine, a tiller that was in the garden of the house we just bought. It seems to have stood in the rain and snow for several years. We'll see if all the repairs on transmission and engine pay off.

ok,heres my story. A friend of mine said i just got a new mower i couldn't figure out what was wrong with my old one, if you want you can take my old one for free its just missing the spark plug. I said shure i'll take it, then when i got it home the it wouldn't start, so i sprinkled a little gas on the air filter then it would run about 3-15 seconds. and then i tryed what you did here and it was 100% perfect! And thats the story of the freemowerme and my wallet thank you donyboy73! you rock! !

Dony what do you think of using kerosene for soaking a carburetor for cleaning and then using carburetor cleaner spray for final clean up?
