  • We gave this little 1999 Ford Mustang GT 4.6L 2v V8 a workout on our dyno and we managed to get it to break 300 ft lbs of torque and 260 rwhp with nothing but basic bolt ons and our custom tuning!

    How funny is it that a full bolt on 4.6 2v V8 mustang only makes 260 rwhp, while we have multiple 3.7 V6 mustangs making 300+ rwhp! This just goes to show how advanced the 3.7L V6 Cyclone motor is!

      Yeah the 3.7 is a awesome motor for sure..gets a ton of un dederved hate. Just for reference...the 3v 4.6 with fbo will make a good 50+ hp and 20+ tq yo the wheels over the ol 2v. Some real crazy stuff is how little hp the old pushrod 5.0s make with bolt ons....but...they make a grip of tq compared to the 4.6 2v...especially down real low

      Motors have turned from torquey to high hp. But personally I do prefer the higher reving higher hp multiple cam motors!

      @@automafiaracing yeah i like them high revving v8s! I still got love for the cyclone tho. The ol 3v pulls prettygood to 6500. That 2v is done by 6k tho....the old 5.0s were done by 5200 lol

      yeah we rev our 3.7 to 8,000 when NA and 7500 under boost.

    The thing is the 4.6 2v is very very durable. I've had 4 and 3 of them have well over 300,000 miles they all still run perfect and 1is my show car with 33,000 miles and always garage kept been my dream car since it first.i spend all my extra money on it. Anyway thanks for the videos.

      @@poopboxsquad Agreed. I had mine for 16 years and the biggest shortcomings are the bottom end. The powdered coated rods can't take the abuse in the fun range (400rwhp)+ for long unless you're watching it like a hawk.

    I use to own 1997 4v Cobra made 306 rwhp and 298 ft/ lbs. The 4v made a lot better high rpm hp, but the torque was better in this 2v, and my cobra was a full bolt on with 4.10 rear gears. I am actually impressed with this 2v and the tune.

    This basically convinced me get a professionally-done Dyno tune on my 2000 GT once I get my bolt-ons done. I'm planning on the same basic bolt-ons but with the addition of a Ford Racing manifold.

    New Edge Mustangs are not meant to remain stock. But to make serious power you need forced induction. I suggest the KB 2.1L. Ditch the Boost-a-Pump (get the Terminator dual pumps), ditch the heat exchanger (again, go with a Terminator HE), and also the water fill reservoir (get something bigger). Get suspension (there are many suspension kits to get rid of the 4x4 look and a firmer ride) and brakes (Mach 1 brake kit, front and rear, they work and look awesome with the red calipers and the pony). You will need an H-pipe (or an X if you prefer), and a Borla cat back. Then you will need decent tires. No street tire will grip, but if it rains where you live, do not get drag radials. I got Pirelli Pilot Sport PS4, and if you go easy on the throttle you can launch without too much drama. Get 3.73 gears. 4.10s will be too much for the instant torque of a twin screw sc. Remember to get the SCT, Diablosport, or whatever your tuner usually tunes with. Get a conservative dyno tune at 9 or 10 psi, unless you get forged internals, but the 4.6 2v engine can take a lot of abuse and keep going.

    They make about 220-230 normally through a 5 speed on a dyno jet. They were rated at 260 flywheel.

      @@automafiaracing well they shouldn't be making under 200 on a dyno jet unless something is wrong with the car or it's just worn out or something. I'm talking about the pi models...the non pi models make well under 200 to the ground every time. This one was low because of a horrendous previous tune that was dragging it down. I'm kinda amazed just how bad it was lol. Good job getting it sorted

      Yeah we have a dynocom so it reads a bit lower than the avg dynojet in our experience. But yeah it was basically a stock tune

      I have full bolt-ons on a 99 Gt 5 speed with full length BBK headers into an off-road x pipe and stage two Crower cams. It's a conservative 93 octane tune for reliability, 295 RWHP with 305 foot pounds of torque. Runs very low 13's. The car is so much more fun to drive and sounds fantastic!!

      What brand 75mm did you go with? Those are pretty good numbers. I wanna look into TB + Plenum + intake manifold for mine. Just a little stumped on the tb/plenum

    when i had my 1999 mustang GT, i ran a 70mm th body, mac long tube headers with 3 in collectors, 3 in mac power chamber no cats, ported upper intake plen, FRPP underdrive pulleys, 24 lb injectors, 4.10 gears, Ported 80mm mass air, K&N open element filter, Super Chips tune for 100 oct fuel.. 310 hp with a Auto and a 3000 stall and a transgo shiftkit. Key is the plugs, copper 1 step hotter. custom gap.

My Father and I worked with SuperChips and had a duel sided chip test deal with are lighting and are PI GT back in 1999-2000.. I would normally try to help you but since you were such a A$$hole your on your own.. Keep Bench racing and ripping people off...And yes, Stock PI Cams.. Hope you dont blow some stuff up kid,.

    260whp, so roughly 300 crank if you factor in 12-13% drive train loss, at 3200lbs. What's not to love? You can get that weight even lower and throw on a handling kit and you'll have a nice canyon carver, even if it's a live rear axle.

    Trick flow top end and it would be perfect around 340 wheel. Wouldn't be a rocket ship by any means but, it would be a blast and sound killer and not be, well...as much of a joke. I love 2v 4.6s and I'm planning to build one for 7-800 wheel and keep it around 550-600. Should be fun in a crown Vic 🤘

    Yeah unfortunately those little 2v's have some serious problems with making good na power without the help of some very radical cams or the trickflow top end kit.
    I tell you what though, this car would be a little ripper with a vortech and some 3.73 gears. 500whp can be achieved pretty easily with this set up. Granted you'll scatter your stock bottom end all over mexico, but itll be fast AF. 👍

      People hate on the 2v but I owned a full Bolt on 5.0 fox body and a 2004 4.6 full bolt on and my 4.6 would outrun it.

      @@setharnold3699 exactly. Nobody hates on the old pushrod 5.0 but it isnt any better at making power than a 2v is. A 2v might actually be easier to make power with. You can make 300 wheel with fbo and cams you can't do that with a 5.0 pushrod you would need the heads modded too maybe the intake as well. Idk why they get so much hate I guess because you can't make 800 wheel with a stock engine (stock rods and pistons)....forged rods and pistons only cost 1200 bucks then you can let it eat. Considering how cheaply the 2v can be had for I dont get the hate I think ppl just like to follow trends. Its trendy to hate on the 2v because that's what everyone else does right? Lol

    I have an '04 40th anniversary edition. I heard they came from the factory beefed up a little. It's bone stock except I was told it had new gears in the rear end. What sort of horsepower do you think it's putting out stock?

      @@automafiaracing I hear you. Was just wondering. I had a lowered 03 first thing I did was bolt ons but the car handled horrible. I have a 97 convertible now and it also handles horrible so Instead of the bolt ons for power I’m trying to get it to handle and feel safe.

    Damn I have an 03 GT with Exhaust 410 gears, bigger throttle body. I had my sct tuner tuned by Bama to the mods on the car but it feels no different to me and I have no clue what my A/F ratio is.. Wish i could have a better tune loaded to gain some power.

      No. We tune with SCT, HP Tuners, Cobb, most stand alones, UP Rev, but no not Diablosport.

      @@automafiaracing do you guys tune these cars with HP tuners? im thinking about purchasing HP tuners for my 99 gt. im gonna run stage 4 comp cams with the edlebrock vic jr intake/ fuel set up and tune it myself. but reguardless what ive noticed is i cant find any..good HP tuner tuning support/ activity for these cars. i dont really want SCT PRP mainly due to price lol.

    Those numbers seem low for a V8. What about the 4.6 4 valve that came in the Mach 1 and cobra? Those are much better right?

      This is just the reality of older V8s. The 2vs didnt make much power. yes the 4v made more.

      My manual Mach 1 made 290 whp About the same as my 3.7. Can’t remember the torque but I have nearly identical 1/4 mile time slips between the Mach1 I had and my 3.7

      The old 2 valve 4.6 doesnt have the cylinder head flow for higher HP. The 3 and 4 valve versions of the 4.6 made 40-50 more horsepower.

      The 2vs are truck motors but they get off the line with there low end power

    How did u get the automatic to run on the Dyno ??? The automatic 2vs have 1-2 low gears apparently they can't run on the Dyno because of it ??

      PI heads , off road x pipe , sct or bama 93 octane tune or better yet a custom tune like the guy in the vid , catback exhaust, cold air intake for starters .

      @@soulerflare7 All that, add underdrive pulleys, gears, and flowmasters mufflers. Also bigger throttle body. You’d be surprised how quick my mustang is. I’ve beaten brand new v6 muscle cars before. Pretty impressive for a 17 year old car.

    Hey man i have a question? My 99 gt when i bought it came with some maf sensor that came off a late 90s ranger ( done by the previous owner) i bought a oem maf for my year mustang and the car ran wouldn't run right ? Is this something i have to get tuned? Thanks!

    All manufacturers will lie about the hp ratings just to sell cars that mustang GT went across 140 mph easy there is a difference of 300 hp on a v6 compared to 228 hp of a v8

      I would do all your bolt ons first and than get a tune as adding bolt ons after a tune you won’t get what you can out of it

    You would think they would have invented a better dyno by now.
    With the motor precision we have today it should be EASY to just hook some sort of reading step motor and punch in some mass numbers and poof. Results.
    So says the dumb guy that only knows BASIC programming.

    The customer is driving, he's sitting on the right and he's shifting with his left hand. When you were doing the dyno runs it's obvious that the steering wheel is on the left side. What's the deal with that?

    Update....omg I just realized the selfie camera flips everything, for some reason I thought it compensated for that as they did sell RHD Mustangs in Europe for a time and I did see a 67 RHD mustang in Hong Kong when I was there.
    Now why is it the rear camera films it in the normal way and the front selfie camera doesn't?
