How to Make an AWD Mustang In 20 Minutes! - American GT-R Ep 26 - Project Traction-AWD S550 Mustang

- This episode covers the complete build up to this point, combining all of the information from the first 24 episodes into 20 minutes. Basically, how to turn a Coyote powered S550 Mustang GT into an American GT-R!
It covers the fabrication of the following parts:
The Transmission and transfer case adapter
The AWD front spindles
The front Differential
The modified oil pan to adapt the differential
The Front crossmember
The jack shaft and custom front CV axles
The transmission started out as a GT500 TR6060 which is similar to a Tremec T56 Magnum.
The transfer case is a BW4440 from a Dodge Charger
The front differential is from a Toyota pickup
Now the goal is to make the final axles and get this baby boosted by a supercharger by spring and hit the track!

There have been a few questions on weight. I covered that in Ep 25, but I should have put it here also. But as the car sits it weighs 3915lbs. That is less than a 200lb difference from stock and I am pretty happy with that. I have over 20 lbs of weight reduction planned, but of course the supercharger will add some back in. I am looking for other potential weight reduction opportunities long term like an aluminum front differential housing, oil pan, etc.
The other common question is torque split, I guess the video wasn't clear, but it is variable from 0-100%. Basically 2wd mode to locked up.

Do a complete interior strip down with a Recaro 4 point harness seat 💺 then a 12 point roll cage

@@sctrep but in order to patent an invention it needs to be novel, and I don't see anything here that strikes me as novel. Not saying it's not awesome, it's just literally all based on other existing products and he didn't invent new processes to create this.

When you can see how intense putting a true variable AWD conversion on a modern car is, you can see why no one is doing it. Hats off to you, this is even more difficult than I imagined. So many manufacturers parts, so many custom parts and you've captured every step of the process in great detail. Stoked to see the final outcome and hope we get to see even more wild stuff coming out of that 2 stall garage
The problem with modern cars is if you want to do anything out of the ordinary you need to be not just a good mechanic and welder, but also electrician and possibly computer engineer too. MegaSquirt has made making a custom ECU simpler for the everyday guy, but it would be nice to see these sort of partially complete, universal, DIY systems for other things, like AWD, or running your HVAC and other in car luxuries even though you have an engine swap.
The most impressive thing, is that you this did in 20 minutes!!
This is how a new mustang should be outfitted. I have always wanted an AWD mustang it's long overdue. By the way sir, I have been a fabricator and hot rod builder for 30 years now and just wanted to say, your work is top notch. Well done.
That’s my wish, I wouldn’t even think about buying the Corvette E-Ray anymore. Imagine an AWD Mustang Shelby GT500.

I think you forget to give us a rough estimate of the cost of the build.
That way we can know what to expect to pay for the kit.
I was thinking of having the Ecoboost Mustang made AWD. I know it may sound silly. But the lighter front coupled with the AWD system makes it a track/autocross weapon.

My Ford Transit is AWD Ecoboost. For a work van it's quick and fun to drive too.

You know for all the drag racing that goes on with Dodge/Ford/Chevy you'd figure more people would do AWD conversion on their cars to go flying. Bravo to this guy paving the way.

@@pewpew-_-2157The amount of money guys spend on high end drag cars is quite huge, to the point where AWD conversion wouldn't be as big of a deal as some might think. Especially for Dodge since they have most of the parts in house. This guy built an Hellcat Magnum with some of the Trackhawk parts integrated. Obviously with custom parts as well.
Wow these are the kind of videos I like to see when someone actually takes the time and effort to do something never done before. So many youtubers putting on wraps and rims like they are doing something worth watching. Just purchased a HAAS TM2-p to prototype this is project is on the list for my S550!

I bumped upon this by accident. AWD American sports and muscle cars would change the game completely. You should be lead design engineer for any of them. 1000hp out of that with awd would kick ass.
I mean would it really though? Peeps have been modding Audis and Subarus for decades now, some are in the 1000hp mark.
@@newolde1 it would still change the game. Name an Audi or Subaru with 1k hp factory. Haven't heard of any 500hp factory Subarus. All the really high hp Audis are mid engine rwd.

@newolde1 ok...modded. There are plenty of 1k hp American cars modded. There are quite a few 2k hp American cars. Add awd to those and see what happens. It exactly would change the game. Don't get me wrong, Audi and Subaru have 4wd and awd down.
@@housepumpinpc3983 well again, nothing new, since there are 2k hp Subarus and Audis as well, amongst others brands. There's even a 3500hp GTR, that's about the craziest awd I've seen. Not sure what the fascination with American brands is about other than a form of nationalism. But if it works for you I'm not going to stand in your way. It's just not going to change any game. That game has been done for years.
Ok I have to say this. As a Subaru WRX owner I remember kicking Mustang butt back in 2002. Everyone going AWD now finding out what we have always known. AWD traction rules. The Honda guys all going AWD too. Now I am sitting here watching this video in awe. A 500hp AWD Mustang is crazy. I sure hope you can start selling this as a kit. I am sure you would become a billionaire. I would buy a S550 just to do the conversion.

Talk about a real old school shop. If the part doesn't exist just make it! So much stuff is just available nowadays that you can puzzle piece of car together. It's really cool watching someone do it the way they did in the '60s and '70s where you had to make everything yourself pretty much.
This is an amazing mix of skills, problem solving, resourcefulness, and art. Something like this would be difficult for an entire engineering team to accomplish in 2 years!

I've had this idea floating around in mind for years, it is so good to see someone put it together. Excellent job.
i have an awd bmw e60 with a twin turbo tkm built coyote with pure drivetrain solutions 8hp95 rated for 1800hp (bmw version of trackhawk transmission) using a bmw x5m front differential. its 3.15 final drive, and i have a ford 8.8 rear diff with mustang 3.15 ring gear. the x5m diff bolts to the sub frame and axles fit, i just need a custom oil pan for the coyote that the diff can bolt to and pass through. i need someone to take some 3d scans and design an oil pan! i first saw your videos back when you first started, and originally was going to ditch the awd and do the simple rwd but i saw your awd oil pan and it made me go for it.
I was enjoying my 2014 Charger R/T AWD then I saw this, I now need an AWD Mustang in my life
This man has the potential to put companies like Hennessey out of business with just this one conversion method.
That’s awesome! Only observations, the temporary shaft going through the oil pan, I’d say put the weld joint outside the engine. If it fails under load now it’ll take out the engine. And I’d try to figure out a way to put the steering in double shear, that’s a lot of unsupported stickout. But I’m more of an off-road guy, so that may not apply on the street.
So cool to see all your hard work to make this happen! Hope that making this will motivate Ford to come out with an AWD model of the Mustang.
