Paris to Ancaster 2023 - A total Mudbath!

- After a week of almost continual rain, much of the Paris to Ancaster course was a complete quagmire. Muddy farmers fields, slick and treacherous single track and mud chutes that were quite literally flowing with torrents of...... yes you guessed it...MUD. This race was also significant for me as it was the first time since my cardiac arrest that I felt truly competetive.
Thank you to Victor from the Red Panda Bike Shop for getting my bike in such fantastic condition. Hope you don't cringe too much when you see it covered in mud. Спорт
I’m P2A “curious” and your video gives a great sense of what’s in store if I pull the trigger in 2024. Congratulations on your time and your finish position! I love how, regardless of how gnarly the conditions, you always keep a positive attitude. Thanks!
Thank you David. You definitely have to do next years race!!!
Fantastic milestone and amazing to see what a journey that you've obviously had over the last 10 years. Familiar weather as well with me being in 'sunny' Northumberland!
Thank you Patrick
Wow! What a race, congrats well down. Really liked the video.
Thank you Keith, I really appreciate that. It is what makes putting these videos together worthwhile.
Well done!
Thank you
Another great vid. Did not get to see you.was a lot
of fun.
Thank you Ed. I hope you had a good race!!
@@cardiaccyclist7477 I did. I was just cruising the whole time.
@@FortheLoveofCycling Awesome!!!!
So sorry we didn’t connect before or after the race but like you had an absolute blast!!
BTW! The tandem that passes you at 5:51 is my friend/coworker Terry (he was on the back and is totally blind).
He’s the one who convinced me to do this race last year which was my first race of any. And eventually led me to meeting you.
Until the next race/ride.
That's fantastic. They seemed to be going so well!!
awesome video! the mud field was indeed the most epic part. i rode the Breve also and that absolutely stopped everyone at my pace. no one could ride through after 3000 people had gone before haha. congrats on finishing and your recovery. it was my first time and i never thought i could finish either, but i did!
Great job Silas. There were many victories for lots of people on that day. Keep racing!!!
@@cardiaccyclist7477 thanks Cardiac! maybe i'll see you at a future race!
@@silas_wong That would be great!!!
I rode my fat bike for the 45km! Worked great and I flew through the mud chutes, still got bunged up in the field though.
I think we all got pretty bunged up there Richard!!!
@@cardiaccyclist7477 Some of the early first wave 100km riders mentioned that they didn’t have much issue with it because it hadn’t been too churned up and more rain added yet!
Excellent summary Andrew, as usual. For my case, in addition to the squeaky breaks, the song of the day was "on your left". I rode the classic, crashed and lost the rear shifter before passing St-George. From then on, I was a sitting duck because the gear was stuck in the easiest gear.
Oh boy, that would have taken some real grit to get to the finish! well done.
Congratulations sir! Most impressive 👍
Thank you James.
Excellent! It's great to hear than you've regained your competitve form & spirit. Nice to run into you and share a few words. See you at the next race!
Yes it was great meeting you Kevin. Hope to bump into you again soon.
Great job Andy!
Thank you!!!
Excited for this one!
It is an incredible race Scott.
Wow that looks like so much fun!
Michael it is like having a license to be a kid and play in the mud!!!
This was my 20th P2A (I think), my second 110km route, its my way to welcome in the cycling season every year
That is a fantastic personal tradition to have Drew
Great vid. Was my 1st and my buddies race as well. Congrats on your huge breakthrough as well !
Thank you very much. Did you enjoy the mud??
Congrats! It was my first P2A and what memories were made. Its great to have these events to push us beyond our comfort level to do something special
Absolutely right. Glad you had a good time
Amazing work Andrew! I have never seen the P2A like that before! I may just have to try this one day! Thanks for the great video and narration comme toujours! Cheers! 🍻
Thanks Alex. The course was terrible for our bikes but in every other way, it was fantastic.
Great to see you’ve enjoyed this event and keep spreading cycling fever!
Thanks Stan. It was amazing!
I was thinking of you all on Sunday, sad I couldn't make it but based on the cold and rain maybe not too sad!! Great achievement Andrew and everyone else.
It wasn't too bad, especially if you stayed in the middle of the bunch 😉
Way to go Andrew that mud and cold would have deterred most, and me included. Was there a fire truck at the end to hose off all that mud you accumulated 😂
HAHA, no but that would have been cool!!!
This was my 5th P2A and every year the weather brings a whole different race element. I had to DNF. No brakes at 80kms out of 108kms. Still epic day.
I am sorry to hear that Ron. A lot of people appeared to be having similar issues.
@@cardiaccyclist7477 and several didn’t stop down that steep hill after the muse chute, ended up in hospital. Many broken derailleurs and chains. It was an epic day in the mud, we’ve got stories to tell now! 😂😂🍻
@@ronrehel1176 Oh boy. I hope there were no serious injuries!!
@@cardiaccyclist7477 few broken bones, I didn’t hear about anything more than that, thankfully.
@@ronrehel1176 Not good, but it could have been much worse
Congratulations Andrew. I'm very much a fair-weather cyclist so I'll experience it through your ride if you don't mind ;-)
Haha, I totally understand William. It is probably not for everyone.
I am debating which distance are you going to do this year? I am thinking of doing the 70km but I’m not sure. The 45km seems a little short and the 70km might be the upper limit this early in the season.
I like the fact they have a 65 plus and Clydesdale division. 😂😂😂 I might rank in one of them.
Definitely, the 45K is not such a challenge in that you know you can comfortably complete it. What this means is that you can push it and be quite competitive. The 70 K can, depending on the course conditions, become a little bit of a slog and I know of friends, who, on the muddier years have finished the 70 K vowing to never do it again. I am doing the shorter distance this year, mainly as I have friends doing that distance and I want to compare my performance to last year. Whichever one you do, you really will love it. There is such a great atmosphere, it is packed full of top-class cyclists and it really is Canada's spring classic.
What tire did you use and what upgrade did you do to your defy?
Great ride
Thank you Menelek. I used Vittoria Terreno Dry. They are basically a gravel tire. I have upgraded the rims (Carbon ICan's) I also replaced the bottom bracket, cranks, chain and cassette. Everything was lighter, reducing the weight of the bike by close to a kg.
I signed up for the 45km P2A race next month and looking forward to it! One i was wondering is how does it work with start line positioning? Is it first come first serve or people get assigned who starts where in the pack?
They used to have two waves, but in the last two years at least, everyone has started at the same time and you just position yourself where you feel it is appropriate. I started about 2/3rds back, just because I didn't want to get in the way of anyone who was really racing. Look out for me on the start line!!
@@cardiaccyclist7477 awesome thanks!
