Caledon Trailway to Elora Cateract Rail Trail - via Forks of the Credit
Even the Porsche doing 120KMH on a country road could not permanently spoil the peace and tranquility of the Elora Cateract and Caledon Rail Trails. I decided to find a really good way to link the two trails together. Following the route of the Trans Canada Trail, I was led through the Forks of the Credit Provincial Park (losing my camera on the way). This seems to be a fantastic way to start to explore the possibilities of longer trail routes in Ontario.

    Been using the saddle for a few months now, close to 1000 km and I am impressed with the quality. I chose the version without the carbon base because I generally find the saddles' extra stiffness uncomfortable. This is the most comfortable saddle I have owned to date. Took two or three rides to find the right position. Picking up on a couple of other posts. Delivery was 5 days and the tracking info was spot on. Original I ordered the saddle for a bit of fun because I specialise in 3D printing and was curious. The Ryet saddle I received is not printed on a cheap filament printer but rather a higher quality material similar to that used by the name brand 3D saddles.

    Best purchase I ever made. I have had epilepsy since 1996, always biked. I can drive with active seizures but morning after Ive had 1 Im a little dizzy so not so smart. Im also REALLY sore all over. Pedaling a bike is not easy when it hurts to walk, enter the ebike. Thanks to an ebike the 3 or so days a week I have a seizure I can still get to my chiropractor a mere 12km away. Every other day of the year I have 3 fractures in my spine to worry about, cant even walk 200yards to the store so I bike. Ive had 3 doctors now recommend a bike or ebike for my health. Chiropractor and physio say bike for the good of your back, use an ebike to lessen the work but still get the excercise. Epilepsy specialist says bike for your mental health, do it every day the less stress you have the better your seizures will be. Use an ebike when everything hurts, it’ll stretch those swollen muscles and hurt less, you’ll still get your stress reduced and best of all it beats doing nothing which only makes things worse! Currently my ebike is a fat bike, Im looking to add a motor to 1 of my mountain bikes so I can still hit trails when Im sore all over. Its a lot more peaceful than being around cars, safer too. I hear a lot of funny things about speed with them, on my ebike I bike no faster than on my mountain bike. Average about 15km/h, I can even bike on the sidewalk without inconveniencing anyone walking.

      @@cardiaccyclist7477 Speaking of which I did the Port Dover LE&N Trail to Brantford yesterday. I had the legs to power through to the Hammer or alternately, do the supreme leg via Paris up to Cambridge, but the older I get (I'm mid Seventies, post cancer w/an irreparably torn right shoulder cuff) it's the hassle of dealing with transit at the end that gives me pause, so I caught the 15 bus to Aldershot, then the GO train into Toronto. Speaking of 'missing links'...getting to Cambridge is an absolute treat, getting through Cambridge to the 25 GO bus is hell...which means taking GRT transit to connect. There's the option of cycling further north to Kitchener, but in all my tries over the decades (I lived in Guelph for five years a decade back) I've never successfully found a contiguous link to join them. Emphasis on 'contiguous'. There's a series of scraps that can be linked, but the older I get, fighting with maps and bad directions stymies me. Next year ostensibly I'll have GPS navigation. On the LE&N: It's been three years since I last did it, and the paving improvement is starkly positive since then. The section from just south of Waterford all the way to central Brantford is now not just paved, but paved double width cycle path, and with very high quality asphalt. It has become a cycling superhighway. I have mixed feelings on that, as it presents itself too readily to those with no real sense of adventure. I get it, there's a lot of old folks (albeit many younger than me) with e-bikes flowing with Nature, but for my adventure spirit, I actually like crushed limestone. I have to state though that the e-bikers were, without exception, friendly, courteous, talkative and *respectful* to only travel at push-bike speed. There were also some seniors in great shape on push-bikes. I've never seen that trail so busy! (But not too busy). What's impressive, albeit it's taken a few decades, is how many of the jurisdictions that the trail (which technically is a series of trails meeting head-on) travels through are working in concert to maintain and promote the trail. The southern most links are crushed limestone, and it gets to be 'track' in some sections, but still easily navigated with a road bike with ample tire sections. I'm pumped still today, must head out again. Distance doesn't deter me, dealing with the lack of connections between trails does.

      That's a huge factor! Oddly, when presenting this to even some serious cyclists (although a minority) they react with surprise. These are the folks that labour like pack-animals along the Trans-Canada Hwy on a foot of asphalt to the right of the adjacent traffic lane, and claim they're having an 'experience'. It's an experience alright, called trepidation and fear, that you don't get hit by traffic coming up behind you. Avoiding highways and arterial roads is a constant challenge. I often end-up walking for kms on the shoulder to connect to safe back roads just for the sake of sanity, let alone safety.

    Definitely were going to dump something. And it could have been a body. My friend used to live at the end of a gravel road near King City. She tells me someone drove up to the end of the road and dumped a body on the other side of the berm just across from where their long driveway connected to the gravel road.

    I rode fixies for most of my childhood up until I was 16 or 17. Money was tight so my dad would make my bikes from leftover parts. My favourite was one that had a long banana seat, an upright steel loop at the end of the seat that was as high as my head, and long curved harley davidson handlebars. None of my bikes had brakes. We lived on top of the escarpment so if I wanted to go down the hill and stay in control I'd have to pedal slowly but instead of pushing down I'd resist the pedals upward movements. A few times I just let fly and then I couldn't get my feet back on the pedals. I'd have to position myself to get a foot dragging on the ground to slow myself down enough to get my feet onto the pedals to resist them turning. That harley bike was a great little bike though. Easy to maintain. I think the chain finally snapped one day because I have memories of standing on one pedal, leaning over the bars, and pushing with my other leg like it was a weird skateboard.

    Creepy/cringeworthy or not, one has to ask when cycling alone: "What if I have an accident?". When I've done the Peterborough to Uxbridge trail (three times now over two decades) it was typical to not meet a soul for 30km stretches, and even then it was bozos on dirt bikes. Even with a cell-phone, it could be an hour or more until EMS could arrive to help you, and if you've been whizzing along (and the surface was very good in years past) you could hit a rut that produces a a bone protruding through flesh, and a large loss of blood. Those 'ruts'? Dirt biker burnout produced in many cases. I'm now mid 70s, and still able to do that distance given the right day and circumstance, but I wouldn't do it alone. In the case of the Sutton Trail now (it used to be a lot better kept decades ago), I'd also not do it alone. Ditto for a number of trails. The Cottontail Trail also comes to mind, albeit help would be a lot closer. Cardiac was absolutely right to raise the point.

    I rode single speeds, 10-speeds, 27-speed front suspension mtn. bikes, 27-speed full suspension bikes and downhill bikes but, for the last 5 years, exclusively fat tire ebikes (one front suspension, current full suspension). Full suspension are always heavier and my ebike is 65 lbs without the battery. Tack on another 7 lbs for the battery). I love the ebike when I am tired and heading home or riding against a strong wind. Where I live(d), since buying the ebikes, there are minimal hills (south eastern Ontario and now, south western Ontario) so not a factor. Studies have shown that riding an ebike is beneficial. Tariffs are already in place in the U.S. and I suspect Canada will implement them too so get one before that happens if you're considering one.

    I'm guessing water quality in Lake Ontario was pretty abysmal during Victorian times

      I have to admit, that was definitely my first thought as well. I was then thinking, when it is used in those 19th century ice boxes, I don't think it comes into contact with the food. I think it just touches the box. So I'm just not sure.

      Lake Ontario is a 'deep' lake, (mean depth about 86m) and doesn't freeze as readily as a shallow one like Simcoe. (mean depth, 16m) Also there's a pronounced current that flows westward along Ontario's shoreline on the north side. That's the reason ice-fishing happens on Simcoe and not Ontario.

    Liked your video and story. Reminds me of the weirdest thing that happened to me on a trail. I had recently moved to Ottawa and was on a trail to do some photography. It was very early Morning. Sun was about to come up. I am about to take a pic of a huge dew shimmering spiderweb, when I hear a noise behind me, like wood being dragged on gravel. I turn around and there is this woman with a huge beach towel over her left shoulder. Wearing flipflops. In her right hand is a full size baseball bat. And she kind of moves the huge towel to partially cover the bat. I say hello to her. She just keeps looking straight ahead and says nothing. I am spooked and figure I will just go on with my business and not aggravate this person. I turn for less than 10 seconds to take the spiderweb shot. I look up expecting to see this weird lady walking down the trail. But when I turn back around she is gone. I could see up and down the trail for 100 yards. Nothing. I headed back to my car looking over my shoulder. I told my wife what I had experienced and she looked up online some old news stories about the trail. Seems a woman was killed 3 years earlier on that trail by her husband. Beat her with a baseball bat. I have been on that trail again many times. The lady has not reappeared to me.

    I could be wrong but I don't think Lake Ontario freezes over but I know Lake Simcoe does, because I'm from that area.

    • @dennismicallef9350

      That makes sense. Lake Ontario does not freeze. The water is probably moving too fast.

    • @cardiaccyclist7477
      @cardiaccyclist7477 11 дней назад

      I think this is essentially right. Although Lake Ontario definitely freezes in parts, I don't think it can be relied upon to freeze. Also, because it is perhaps more active and deeper than Lake Simcoe, I think you can't guarantee it will freeze as smoothly and from the photographs I have found, having a smooth surface appears to be crucial.

    • @cardiaccyclist7477
      @cardiaccyclist7477 11 дней назад

      I have lived by the lake, and it definitely froze by the shore, but it often looked more like a mountain range than an ice rink!! not ideal for harvesting.

    You’re right, it’s the trail length for me. The distance and time it would take to get there would mean I would want a bit longer of a ride. Plus looks a little under maintained. Would make a nice segment of a race course I would think though.

      I was going to recommend to people that they maybe start at Willow Beach. Then you can ride along the Lakeshore, before connecting with the trail, HOWEVER!!! There does not appear to be any legal free parking there and the pay parking is $10 per hour!!! So all round, it doesn't really make sense.... but you know John, my job is to go to these places so others don't have to HAHAH!! :)

      This is a real shortcoming with many Ontario trails. I sent away for a free map of New York State's Empire State Trail a week ago, it came yesterday, they paid the US$3.86 postage for it....they're so pleased and progressive as to entice persons to share their facilities. And it's not just NY State, the US Feds sponsor/host national networks too, with overnight facilities for those wishing to camp/shower doing days-long trips. I'm also familiar with the UK National Cycling Network in the UK. Many nations do this, but alas....Quebec is about as close as we'll get to that. I'm in incredible envy. Btw: The Empire State Trail? You can cycle from Buffalo to NYC! Or to Montreal if you head north on the Hudson at Green City. Why can't we Ontarians have nice things too? RUclips threads like this one and a handful of others can only help promote the cause. One of the missing links from Toronto is going to be the trail replacing the Orangeville-to-Brampton Rwy. Ironically more trails intersect in the eastern part of our province, no thanks to Queen's Park though.
