    Great vid and thank you. Paint choice is my topic of question...
    I have done this in the past with the same great results in aerosol mete black fashion.
    The problem I’ve experienced is sand/dirt dinging the rim from prolonged abuse over time with the end result having my rims looking like 💩 more than before. This is from paint choice. I keep researching before my next re-do and I’m still stewing in my thoughts.
    Gun paint might hold up very well, wheel paint, powder coating, ceramic paint, but not regular off the shelf spray paint.
    Any good first-hand experience out there?

      Joseph T: Hope all is well in your moto world. I haven’t repainted my rims yet because I’m in the northeast and I’m awaiting warmer weather so I can do it outside. I bought some PJ1 Fast Black (Porcelain Hard) as advertised but I’ve yet to use it. I also bought a Tusk Rear Rim/Spoke kit but the fronts are still unavailable. I’m going repaint my rims soon enough just to try out the PJ1. Prep and cure time is critical. I’ll likely put the rear in the oven once it’s semi-dry, but the front won’t fit. A good heat bake at about 200 degrees makes it harder.

    try using VHT epoxy black spray paint, they sell it at auto parts stores like auto zone, its really strong stuff and holds up good against rims or on the frame or anything else.

      Rustoleum paint black and that steel clean primer?

  • @JDawgBuilds
    @JDawgBuilds 3 года назад +1

    The rustoleum enamel (black) works well if that’s your final coat. If you’re going to add more coats of color or clear stay away from enamel paints or wait for it to fully cure not dry, but cure.
    You should try “spray max 2k clear” it’s a 2 part clear in a can. Same stuff that’s on a car’s clear coat.

  • @RidingWithNick125

    I’m thinking about doing this too. I’m having trouble finding the same exact black paint you used because there all sold out on Walmart’s website. Have you tried any other paints that worked well?

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  6 лет назад

      It doesn't have to be the same brand I used here in the video, but I do recommend using the same brand for primer, base and clear coat. And yes, I have used Rustoleum, Krylon and the Walmart 87 cent cans; all have worked fine.

    to use rustoleum clear on there own spray products you have top let it dry for 3 days to fully cure before applying the clear coat. I have had the same issue researched it, and then tried the 3 days and it works perfect!

    • @MichaelSabo

      You can always modify the heel guard to give you more range of motion for your kick. Aftermarket parts sometimes take a little bit of finesse to make them fit/ function right.

    In my case my excel rims are already black but faded and have chips on them can I just straight up spray the black again or do I need to rough up surface, use primer then coat in black? Thanks!

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  4 года назад +1

      Roughing them up is what makes the finish last longer; I'd probably follow the same procedure as if they were painted. Just remember, the finish won't be as durable as powder coating but it will freshen up the wheels and it usually lasts pretty well.

  • @TPA_JW
    @TPA_JW 6 лет назад +2

    How long did you wait between the primer, black paint and clear coat? Also, how long did you wait between the layers of each? Thanks! great job

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks man! Primer dries very quickly, I usually only wait about 10 minutes between the primer coats. Don't wait more than an hour to spray your color over the primer. Depending on which primer you use, this one in the video is designed to be painted over before it is fully cured to make a better bond. Depending on how humid it is where you're painting, I generally wait 15-30 minutes between color and clear coats; I will usually wait until the "wet" look goes away. I give the color paint at least an hour before I spray on the clear and in VERY thin coats. Don't spray to thick or you will get run and sometimes fish eyes. Hope this helps!

    • @TPA_JW
      @TPA_JW 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, it does. I used your video to paint the silver rims on my 2007 CR125, came out really well. I did run into a few spots where the black paint bubbled and cracked a bit, not sure what caused it. I just sanded it down and re-painted the specific spots. I do live in Florida, so the humidity is typically really high. But, now it is a little colder, so the humidity is lower than normal. I used the same paints you did as well. I am getting ready to paint the silver rims on my 2011 yz450f.

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  6 лет назад +1

      Awesome man, thank you for this feedback. Sometimes no matter how much I clean the rim, i still get cracks and bubbles. Best advice to avoid that is to make sure you're making your coats thin.

  • @owl1873

    Iv had the same experience with clear coat wrinkling. Paint must be cured before applying clear coat. Also clear coat will wrinkle if applied during unsuitable cold temperatures even on cured paint. On cold days i will leave my spray cans out in the sun to allow paint or clear to get up to an suitable temp for applications.

    Do you recommend using spoke wrap?

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  6 лет назад

      You could but straws is so much cheaper and the spoke skins would be ruined with over spray.

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  6 лет назад

      If you buy actual spoke skins, yes. They're much thicker and will provide protection. The straws though, I would not recommend; I just use them to mask the spokes and prevent over-spray.

      Didn't work.. Started to bubble after I put the clear coat on.. So I Sanded, and power washed all of it off.. Then used a wire brush to beat up the rim a little more.. Then did it again with different spray paint, and no clear coat.. and then it worked..

    • @morgansanchez8241
      @morgansanchez8241 7 лет назад +1

      It was probably my fault, I probably messed up somewhere.

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  7 лет назад

      For whatever reason, sometimes the paint bubbles or gets fish eyes when you put the clear on. I think it has to do with cure time and humidity. 99% of the time it doesn't bubble up on though if you let the base coat cure long enough.

    • @tomthomsen11
      @tomthomsen11 6 лет назад

      The thinner the paint the better (meaning final thickness on the rim). You only need enough to make them black. Then the clear coat. I use this same technique but you can leave the wheel on the bike and I use an industrial coating (uses hardener) and a touch-up spray gun. Way more durable than the spray can paint. Use a paint pen for touch ups if necessary. Use a Motion Pro rim protector or equivalent when changing tires. Good to go!

    What's the use of painting the rims when the spokes still look like shit? I would have take it al apart and polished
    the rim and rechrome the spokes, and that's the way how it should be done.

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  6 лет назад +4

      Nah man that's just the way you would do it. This way is much easier and cheaper and the wheel doesn't need to be re-spoked or trued. These are things that a lot of people can't do on their own or afford. This method works fine and it doesn't look like shit either. Thanks for the comment!

      It still comes off, but it's pretty durable. All comes down to your prep work. I've done quite a few bikes this same way though and it holds up pretty well. When you change a tire your going to make some marks, but if you touch it up after you barely see it.

Don't rush to the end result,take your time or you'll regret the end result.. not everyone can spray paint well.. most don't listen and skip steps half assing their way to a drip covered paint chipped mess.. don't paint rims people will see unless you can paint lol

      el malo lmao yes i guess you could call it a backyard job. 500 is way too much man! Even if he's putting on new spokes and powder coating. The paint can be bought at Wal-Mart too. It's just basic rustoleum and a good primer to use is the bonding primer from rustoleum.

      Actually estimating that job...Dismounting and mounting tires, tubes, dismantling wheels, powder coating, relacing with new spokes. $500 is a great price. It would be Cheaper to buy preassembled aftermarket wheels or just do it the way Michael did. Turned out great!

    I bet that after one ride the rims are for another painting, true?

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  6 лет назад

      No. I've done quite a few rims this way and sold some of them to friends who still ride on them. It's not powder coating but they hold up well if you take your time and prep correctly.

      It's a simple quick mod. Sure you can remove all your spokes and powder coat the rim if you want. There are many ways to get the same look, it's your choice how you do it. This is just a video of one of the ways I've done it. You sound like one of those girls that is never happy, no matter what she gets 😃 I hope your boyfriend does something nice for you this Valentines Day!

    At 7:59 right near the top, does his front rim have a crack around the edge?

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  6 лет назад

      I don't have this bike anymore but I think that was a mark on the rim. I'm usually pretty good at looking over everything, especially if I am painting. I could be wrong though.

    what happens when you wash them with pressure washer

    • @MichaelSabo

      I use a 3000 PSI pressure washer on my bikes with no problem. Paint just has to be prepped correctly.
