Thanks! I do not torque the spokes, I just go by feel. When tightening the spokes every few rides I go in a pattern to ensure they are tightened evenly. Once you build a few wheels you have an idea how tight they should be, but a spoke torque wrench would be nice to have for sure!
This charges the part and allows the powder to stick. The powder is electrically charged when it comes out of the gun to the part has to attract the powder for the powder to stay on the part before baking.
Thanks! The bearings need to come out so the plastic caps and ball retainers inside the bearings don't get melted in the oven. Any plastic or rubber needs to be removed before powdercoating.
holy hell man alot of people are quick to misjudge you. its like yeah you sound quiet I did not expect to see a pro vid like this you blew me away man. million thumbs up to you bud you did quite a job on that wheel. wish you could do my bike frame for me lmao.
I'm not sure of the exact temperature of the part when the red is sprayed. I would guess somewhere around 125-150 degrees. It has to be hot enough for the powder to stick but not too hot where it starts to fluidize.
Thanks! Nope, I haven't had any issues. Powdercoating holds up pretty good. On engine covers and frames it wears through eventually, but on wheels and hubs it works great.
Thanks man ! just got the yamaha side covers done satin black and the sprocket bright red ! came out perfect !! and you helped alot with your videos !!!
when powder coating the hubs could u keep all the bearing in the hubs and just mask around them so no paint gets on them? what is the advantages of taking out the bearings? and sweet videos man, you good at working on bikes, and hondas are the best lol.
If I want to get just the rim on my wheels powder coated, do I have to take it all apart or can I jus have them powder coat it with the spokes and everything on?
how did you bake your rims? i doubt those fit in the oven. im looking into buying a gun and such but only if i can do my rims too, the spare oven i have is about the same size as yours.
Extremely helpful! The ladder, the tray for the spokes, all great ideas. I'm aboutto powder coat drum hardware and this looks to be the same process from what I've read. Can you tell me what cleaning solutions you used at 6:10, right before sandblasting?
I love Eastwood products. I use to think lacing wheels was a pain until I did it a few times with the help of a book and videos. I use plates and pre drill holes as well for hardware. My friend was watching me one time and was like what the heck are you doing lol most things you have to make yourself because either ya can't buy it or its not worth paying for. Great vid by the way
About 10 years ago my son and I built our own oven using insulated ductwork for the box and an electric stove for the heat elements it was large enough for dirt bike frames and wheels it worked great.
Hi! I just powdercoated my hub like u did but i used regular red and didnt get the "eloxated" finish at all. what kind of red will i have to use? Best regards Marcus
hey buddy, do you think it would be possible for me to cook my rims by hanging them over my oven? as in cook them close to top pot area? my oven is like 2inches too small for my 21inch from rims :(
Very nice video! Thank you. I didn't see it in the comments so I'll ask. What color of chrome and red did you use? I'm going to attempt the same color.
Thanks for your reply . I can't wait to get my hubs back from powder coat , I'm going to try your trick for making the rim true on the bike . Have a good one !
Powdercoating holds up great, no chips just the average wear on the top edge where the tire meets. Any coating will wear on that spot. The rims were actually diamondyzed.
Good movie, but... sandblasting the bearings surface can basically change the dimension and create a play. I leave old bearings, and replace them with new ones after painting.
You definitely need to remove the bearings. They will be destroyed when you prep for powdercoating (beadblasting). Also, they do not hold up good in the heat.
Yes you can do this in your basic oven at home but I would not recommend using it for cooking food after doing so. I would also find a good way to monitor your temps also. Some powders will create some odor also.
Nice job! Im doing my spokes and nipples black, hub illusions red/clear and rims illusions cherry with (black stripes on 1/2) then a coat of clear vision. Hope it works!
Great video! Iam thinking of powder coat my wheels, but how long does it last for a life time? on sand tracks for example? can i hit 150 hours before the paint is trying to disappear/ Thanks for answers
Thank you for watching the video! The powercoating on the hubs will last quite a while but the rims take a lot more abuse and won't hold up as long. If you are careful changing tires then I would guess you can get at least 100 hours before the rims start to get chipped.
which powdercoating gun and powder do you use? I am looking into the eastwood dual voltage. however i am wanting to use prismatic powders which recommend 45kv and the eastwood only does 25kv
I hope you see this and respond, but could a person powder coat with wheels in one piece, or would baking them mess up the integrity of the spokes? thinking of doing my super moto rims all in a chrome, then the barrel in a candy red and the spokes smoked black chrome.
It is possible to powdercoat the whole wheel but it would be very tough to completely cover the spokes and then the hub and rim when they're still together. I'd much rather spray them separately. But to answer your question, no, it wouldn't damage the spokes to bake them.
Great video. I got myself an eastwood kit and have been following your process closely with the same colors actually, chrome base with trans red on top. Question. Did you ever encounter problems with the ground when spraying the second coat? I used a self tapping screw in a spoke hole as my ground, which worked great for the chrome base, but when I went to spray the red only half the hub would take the red. I see the screw worked great for your ground so I'm wondering if you ever had problems with it and did you use a machine screw not a self tapping? maybe thats my problem. Just curious of your two cents. Thanks and again, great vid! Big help!
Hey Mitch, glad you found the video helpful. Doing a second coat is always tough once the base has cured and cooled. I've had similar issues with the translucent not wanting to stick, the screw definitely helps but spraying at a certain temperature solved the problem for me. So after pulling the part out of the oven after the base coat, I would let it cool until the rack was just cool enough to touch, usually a 2-3 minute wait. Then spray the color and it will stick much better when the part is still hot, but not hot enough where the powder will start curing. If you have a temp gun you can really find the sweet spot. Maybe try the process with a test part first.
Hey man I love your videos! Were do you buy your paint and what does it price around? How much is the powder coating gun you have or one that will work good but at a cheaper price? thank you!
Hey yo oneone9 Creations !, well i got my powdercoat kit from eastwood and pickedup a oven, now im working on getting my sandblasting - cabinet, compressor, etc. What blast media and profile do you use for your motorcycle parts ? Thanks a ton, keep up the great viddys :D
That's great! I use a media called Green Diamond, I'm not sure of the exact specifications. Any medium grade sand will do the job on most parts. Thanks for watching!
Yes, you can go thicker for sure. Any powdercoating on engine covers will wear pretty quick though. I've since just left them raw aluminum to avoid the wearing.
You sure have improved your videos over time! This is so different!
I am using a standard EW gun. The chrome base is from Eastwood as well. It is the "Reflective Chrome" model.
Thanks! I used a dish soap mixture to clean the parts. Any dish soap/water mixture or degreaser will do the job.
Thanks! The bearings need to come out so the plastic caps and ball retainers inside the bearings don't get melted in the oven. Any plastic or rubber needs to be removed before powdercoating.
i sure do love some SPOKE NIPPLES!! lol. Great vid bro and your powder coating skills have gotten better.
Yes, you should be able to do it, it just takes patience. There isn't much to mess up when lacing and truing.
Sweet! I might be turning that bike into the next bike build series.
You'll have to use a translucent red with a chrome base like shown in the video.
holy hell man alot of people are quick to misjudge you. its like yeah you sound quiet I did not expect to see a pro vid like this you blew me away man. million thumbs up to you bud you did quite a job on that wheel. wish you could do my bike frame for me lmao.
Hey thanks I really appreciate it! Videos definitely don't come naturally to me haha. Heck yea send over your frame ha.
moto dodo Yea, this guy is sharp..The instructions are clear and to the point..
I'm not sure of the exact temperature of the part when the red is sprayed. I would guess somewhere around 125-150 degrees. It has to be hot enough for the powder to stick but not too hot where it starts to fluidize.
That is a good idea. I will try to put something together.
Not sure, never used a Harbor Freight one. The EW one works fine.
You have to drill out the punch marks so the retainer will thread out. The punch marks hold it from spinning.
Thanks! Nope, I haven't had any issues. Powdercoating holds up pretty good. On engine covers and frames it wears through eventually, but on wheels and hubs it works great.
Can that be done without removing the seals and bearings?
Thanks man ! just got the yamaha side covers done satin black and the sprocket bright red ! came out perfect !! and you helped alot with your videos !!!
That's awesome! Great to hear it worked out for you. Powdercoating is an amazing thing.
Thanks! I hope to do more soon!
Most of the time they are not interchangeable. Check with an aftermarket rim manufacturer to see if they interchange.
Thanks! Yes, as long as you remove the bearings and seals.
@conner31 racing After about 20-30 hours they got beat up, about the same as side plate graphics.
Where did you get the rim decals
This kid is sharp. Thanks for the informative video!
Thanks for watching!
i dont have a spray gun or anything i just use spray cans will i still need to bake the parts and add the ground wire to it ? thanks
If you have a spoke torque wrench do you still need to tire the wheels or will it automatically be tried after you torque to the service manual specs?
question, could you tape off the spokes and stuff and powder coat just the rims? thanks
when powder coating the hubs could u keep all the bearing in the hubs and just mask around them so no paint gets on them? what is the advantages of taking out the bearings? and sweet videos man, you good at working on bikes, and hondas are the best lol.
I bought the rims the way they are. I did not powdercoat them. You would need a bigger over to bake them in.
Your videos are awesome man I've been wanting to paint my rims and hubs for a while now just didn't know how to go about it!
Extremely helpful! The ladder, the tray for the spokes, all great ideas. I'm aboutto powder coat drum hardware and this looks to be the same process from what I've read. Can you tell me what cleaning solutions you used at 6:10, right before sandblasting?
Vintage Cameron. How did the coating on sprocket hold up? I imagine the chain wore off the pc around the teeth.
You will need a gun, oven, powders, plugs, masking tape, and hooks. All of these items are available from Eastwood. Everything should be under $200.
after putting some hours on the power coating riding does the dirt and rock make it chip?
i wanted to get my hubs powder coated but by looking at the front one, it looks like the edge will chip. Are yours still good?
Hello , nice video I can't understand with what you painted parts of circles
I love Eastwood products. I use to think lacing wheels was a pain until I did it a few times with the help of a book and videos. I use plates and pre drill holes as well for hardware. My friend was watching me one time and was like what the heck are you doing lol most things you have to make yourself because either ya can't buy it or its not worth paying for. Great vid by the way
Thanks! It's pretty amazing what you can learn online, that's how I learned most of what I know.
About 10 years ago my son and I built our own oven using insulated ductwork for the box and an electric stove for the heat elements it was large enough for dirt bike frames and wheels it worked great.
Power Wagon how about a video on your oven. I'm using a freebie electric oven and a box on the front for longer parts.
Air temperature? The powder is sprayed at room temp.
Hi! I just powdercoated my hub like u did but i used regular red and didnt get the "eloxated" finish at all. what kind of red will i have to use?
Best regards Marcus
So, in looking into getting powder coating, but I don't know exactly what I need and how much it will cost? Can u help me?
hey buddy, do you think it would be possible for me to cook my rims by hanging them over my oven? as in cook them close to top pot area? my oven is like 2inches too small for my 21inch from rims :(
Great video! I also learned a lot! Thanks for taking the time to make and share your videos. Keep em' coming! Have a Super,Blessed Week!......Gus
Thanks! I can't tell you how much it really means to see that people have good things to say! I appreciate it!
hey man i have a question did u sandblast the rims or soda blast it??
How do the spokes hold up after using the spoke wrench? Just curious how durable the powder is after tightening them down
oh, thanks. do you think i should buy a harbor freight powder gun for 60 dollars or just buy an eastwood for 100?
Thanks for the great video! I learned a lot from it. You have some amazing talents. Keep up the good work!
Thank You! I appreciate the positive feedback!
Quick question can u powder coat the rims too or will they come out bad?
Very nice video! Thank you. I didn't see it in the comments so I'll ask. What color of chrome and red did you use? I'm going to attempt the same color.
+seth haddix Thanks! I used a translucent or candy red. The chrome just needs to be of the highest gloss or reflection. Good luck!
Green chrome
oh and btw i have a 2003 cr125 and i hope to see more of your cr125 that i saw in that high side video!
are rim interchangeable between manufacturers like lets say i want to put rm125 rims on a yz125 would it work
@brandon voss
Thank You!
Thanks for your reply . I can't wait to get my hubs back from powder coat , I'm going to try your trick for making the rim true on the bike . Have a good one !
How much does getting a powder coating gun and the paint cost?
All of your videos are amazing keep up the good work
hey dude is powder coating rims and hubs a good idea? im thinking about it but dont want them to chip!
Great vid, very useful. Which powder coating setup are you using in the video? :-)
im just wondering, how do u afford all this since your only 19 what do u do for a job? love your videos btw!
Did the powdercoating on the rims hold up pretty well? What do they look like now? are they really chipped up, or just normal wear and tear.
Powdercoating holds up great, no chips just the average wear on the top edge where the tire meets. Any coating will wear on that spot. The rims were actually diamondyzed.
How much Volt you use in order to paint the rims ? Can it be done with a 120V kit ? Thanks
+raul fernandez Yes, you can powdercoat with 120V. Check out the guns at Eastwood for more info.
why do u have to drill on the marks on the rear bearing retaining ring?
I use an Eastwood brand gun.
just wondering what do you do for a living?
Why did you use crome first and color later?
@hondaaxrs85 why do you put a ground wire on the part when you spray it
Good movie, but... sandblasting the bearings surface can basically change the dimension and create a play. I leave old bearings, and replace them with new ones after painting.
Thanks for checking out the video Jack!
when lacing the rear wheel do the longer ones go inside and shorter outside? or the other way around
?
sprocket side is longer. Bag your parts as you go with labels. Makes it much easier.
Can do this to all your bikes outer metal
You definitely need to remove the bearings. They will be destroyed when you prep for powdercoating (beadblasting). Also, they do not hold up good in the heat.
Do they hold up good?
Thanks!! I really appreciate it!
Can I so this in my oven at home or is it poisonus or somtin? . Also can I hand sand the parts as oposed to sand blasting????
Yes you can do this in your basic oven at home but I would not recommend using it for cooking food after doing so. I would also find a good way to monitor your temps also. Some powders will create some odor also.
Did it last a while or come off quick
hey at what temp did you spray the red
As far as home DIY and open minded u ROCK.
Thank You
what do you have for a powder coating gun?

OneOne9 Creations Thank you for the answer! Keep up the good videos/ Thanks
Thanks!
Do your chickens have large talons
Did you use a clear coat over the transluecent red ?
+nicole casale No, I did not use a clear coat.
Nope, haven't had any problems with chipping.
Hello how do I get on the machine and spray materials
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoy the videos! I'll just say I have a good job :)
which powdercoating gun and powder do you use? I am looking into the eastwood dual voltage. however i am wanting to use prismatic powders which recommend 45kv and the eastwood only does 25kv
I use the older Eastwood gun. I don't know much about the newer guns. Haven't been into powdercoating for a few years now.
ReVive Moto Parts right on well your parts still turned out great!
Thanks!
Hey! Can I sandblast my two engine blocks? :) Thanks for awesome videos!
No
I hope you see this and respond, but could a person powder coat with wheels in one piece, or would baking them mess up the integrity of the spokes? thinking of doing my super moto rims all in a chrome, then the barrel in a candy red and the spokes smoked black chrome.

thank you
also why does your powder coating look like bed liner on film? is it what you chose? shouldnt it be smooth like paint
what type of tape is used for masking ?
Hello. What kind of paint do you use? It looks great :D
Thanks! I use Eastwood brand powders.
It's not paint it's powder. Pay attention
Great video. I got myself an eastwood kit and have been following your process closely with the same colors actually, chrome base with trans red on top. Question. do you use a dual voltage gun?
No, I just have the standard gun.
Are stock hubs cast versus aftermarket forged?
Yes, stock hubs are cast.
Hey man I love your videos! Were do you buy your paint and what does it price around? How much is the powder coating gun you have or one that will work good but at a cheaper price? thank you!
Any more questions
Hey yo oneone9 Creations !, well i got my powdercoat kit from eastwood and pickedup a oven, now im working on getting my sandblasting - cabinet, compressor, etc. What blast media and profile do you use for your motorcycle parts ? Thanks a ton, keep up the great viddys :D

thanks oneone9 !! you gotta do more powdercoat videos brah !
OFFROADcrashes
I hope to do more vids in the future. Glad people enjoy them.
Nope, they have held up great. No chipping, but there is a little sun fading.
may i ask why you heat the part up then let it cool? then powder coat it?
The purpose of pre-heating the part is to burn off any contaminants or oils that may be on the part prior to spraying the powder.
Ooooo ok that totally makes sense good idea no other video i seen said that step. thank you
So it is ok to leave the masking tape on while it bakes right?
Yes, the tape I used is made to withstand high heat.
ok thanks, I have the same tape, just wanted to be sure.
Does doing a little bit thicker than not make it hold up better? Like on the engine covers than will have boots against them?
Yes, you can go thicker for sure. Any powdercoating on engine covers will wear pretty quick though. I've since just left them raw aluminum to avoid the wearing.
ReVive Moto Parts Thanks for being honest! How about the rims though? They hold up good?
Thanks! Haha, not yet.
nice
