For everyone saying how can she be mixed and not know that. Uhm because the lives on a commune where no one would ever use a straightener? This was her first
Time...
@Elle D her mother definitely isn't the type to ever straighten her hair
Elle D did you watch the episode? Her mother said she had to learn to love her hair and since she raised her kids mostly on the commune, they didn’t have to conform to society and get their hair straightened. The kids didn’t even know there were hair salons let alone places to straighten hair. It wasn’t apart of their culture until they went into mainstream society.
@Elle D mixed children are know to have "good hair" and black people love to see that so it wouldnt be straightened
some mixed ppl's parents aren't great at knowing how to do their hair... it's sad
@@lillost exactly, thank you!
Omg it's the girl that plays Judy from KC Undercover, I hope to be seeing her in more 🤗
OMG I thought I was the only one who noticed that. I can't believe Judy is in the show okay now I'm going to start watching mixed-ish.
😂😂😂
Her names trinitee stokes she's amazing!
Omg I noticed that 2 weeks ago

All these “as a mixed person I relate”.
I’m mixed too.... but my moms is black..I think y’all with non black moms had these problems because my mom put me on game.
😂
True! My little cousins are mixed (B/W) their mom is white, and...well. ..yeah.😔
My cousins have a black mom who hates being black and she never taught them anything about race. Stop generalizing.
@@BeccaBeccaBecca22 that's really really sad
Part of this is true
all she had to do was put her hair in a bun & call it a day
Who even exercises with their hair down anyway? I overheat easily and the back of my neck feels so gross after working out if I don’t at least go with a ponytail.

WhatAWorld Fair
In all fairness, I didn't know this when I was a teenager. My hair poofed into a fro and the hilarity began...1987.
I’m starting to see how this is a educational show for white folks about being mixed although I don’t agree with some of the “struggles” coming from a mixed family I find it funny and relatable
For white folks? Why because of one clip? It's meant to educate everyone, black people can be just as ignorant towards mixed people.
In the instance of this episode, all black people understand how our hair works and the politics around it. But white people are going to have way less exposure to these issues, and this episode directly acknowledges that there will be white people watching who won’t know how perms work
@@TheJadedJames agreed.
I’m not white and I have no idea about black hair struggles either
it's just like Black-ish and Grown-ish they educate and entertain.
The overcompensation part hits me right home. I don't miss those days
She didn't try to tell her, she was as useful as Abe Weissman when he was "trying" to warn Midge about Joel.
She was being a little hatful As#$&@ , but bow could of just washed her hair out to her natural curls and call it a day 🙄
No she did tell her . Why else would she ask her if she's going out with her hair straightened at gym to exercise ? Obviously something is wrong along with the tone in her voice telling her if she's crazy . Also , A big obvious hint is that the girl hair is wrapped up and yet her hair isn't .
@@trollingontheriver8868 , No she wasn't.
@@bittersweet6927 Yeah but one cannot always assume people take hints
@@jessicavictoriacarrillo7254 , Well if its that obvious it's to be assumed .
I'm mixed with a black mom and my mom never taught me how to do my hair. She wears weaves and I've only seen her natural hair probably like a dozen times in my life, and I'm in my 20s. I had to learn hair care on my own and from a young age I was made fun of for my hair being too "poofy" by white kids and a few mixed boys. I didn't know how to make my curls definied or or less frizzy until I did that research myself. My mom just used water on my hair and would put it in a ponytail or bun until I was in like 6th grade then I got tired of my natural hair and would straighten it every. Single. Day. This went on until I was about 18 and I FINALLY embraced my natural hair, found good products for it, and now i rarely straighten my hair. Maybe once or twice a year for special occasion. Not all black mother's know about haircare, and no I'm not blaming her but people saying this scene isn't realistic are just generalizing that all black women are knowledgeable about haircare.
Oh ok
thank you for telling them ! i had the same experience having to figure it out on my own
I'm not biracial but everything you said I felt except my mom was more mean, she never taught me how to do my hair she thought I would just get it and my mom was weaved out too. I did go to a predominantly white school and because my hair a lways looked a mess people constantly wanted to touch it or remind me how bad I looked especially my mom even till this day, I just got in the habit of getting wash and sets every week when I asked my mom for help she would just say "you're a girl, you don't know how" I'm currently in school for nails but thinking about going for cosmetology after, also I'm in my 20s still learning, this also a reason why I never want a girl only sons.
@@quiarawalker9615 I'm sorry you went through that .😔 People can be cruel. My mom always made sure my hair was done but she didn't know how to properly care for it
True. A lot of knowledge was lost in the weave/relaxer/wig cultural era.
Are they seriously presenting this as a cultural norm or joking? I’ve been black my entire life and have never wrapped or seen anyone wrap her hair for gym class. Who are the people writing this stuff?. I don’t watch any of the “ish” shows.
Update: I was in elementary school in the 80s and can STILL say I have never seen anyone wrap their hair up in PE class. TBH I kind of doubt my PE instructors would have allowed us to wear this because it could become a safety hazard if it comes off on the court during a game and someone slips on it. No I’ve never seen a basketball, volleyball, softball, flag football or whatever game with a bunch of girls with their hair wrapped in scarves. Even if some girls were doing it in other places this show acts like the girl was STUPID for not wrapping her hair when based on the comments here it’s clear not all black girls did this. We put our hair in a bun/ponytail.
Never have I ever or seen anyone else wrap their hair for gym. Maybe Get a hair tie and don’t do too much...
Right! Wrapping doesn't stop curly hair from reverting, who tf came up with that? I don't trust this show. Won't waste my time
@That One I do. But wearing a scarf before gym is merely a barrier to the elements, not a fix to its effects
This shit show is absolute trash, disrespect!!!!
Y’all got some issues for real cause not everybody’s hair is the same. I had to wrap mine for PE cause any sweat will make it frizz. Y’all probably had sew ins and didn’t need to wrap your hair
I feel like a white person be writing these shows💀💀💀

Unfortunately, Kenya Barris, a Black man, and Tracee Ellis Ross did this. 😒 They should know better.

Corrine Williams this is trash
yeah, it's definitely written for a white audience
And this is why the "I don't care what others think" attitude ends up backfiring because they to stubborn to take advice
Not always. People can do what they want.
Unfortunately this is kinda weird for me to watch. Mixed race black people, black people with looser curls, softer textured hair, etc. have always been a part of the black community. This “problem” for you g bow was overemphasized. The hair texture could have caused her issues but not like this. Also, even with the boy. Maybe his hair could have been given a style update but the texture being made a problem is weird. “Good hair” aka looser curls has always be a preference and helped in terms of socializing, especially during the 80’s lol idk this is just weird to me
And having a black mom is a guarantee you know how to upkeep whatever style she "slaved" to do. My mommas words not mine lol. Wrapping your pressed hair, oiling your scalp, all that is given to you by your black parents. Hair is so important to the black community we bond over it you telling me this girls BLACK MOTHER didn't tell her nothing? I call malarkey
Folks are forgetting that they are from a commune so they won't be letting society change them so easily like everyone else smh it's like yall just watch clips on RUclips instead of the entire episode

OK it was never that serious just put it up into a ponytail or a bun🙄
Shanoriya Robinson lol it’s a show
If was never that serious, why are you taking it so seriously?
That leaves a wave/huge wrinkle in your hair when you take it down. Or are you not black??? (I’m jk, but because SO MANY black people here are judging this as if the mixed kids are black like them. That’s the point of the show that they don’t fit in and they’re not like either side!! I have mixed girl hair and hers looks like mine when it’s only slightly straightened and a little stiff. If you tie it up, it will keep the line from the hair tye in it when it comes down. That defined my middle school hair years)

You don’t have to be mixed to relate to having your hair bounce back to your natural curl due to sweat, humidity, water, etc. It’s a curly hair thing, not a race thing.
Yes any curly girl on the planet knows about this or finds out at some point
Tell me about it. I only straighten my hair out to make it easier on my stylist when I get a haircut. And whenever I want to have long hair. My hair goes 2 inches past my shoulders when straight but when it's curly it only goes down to my chin. My hair looks beautiful because it's long but the entire time my hair is straight I'm miserable because I have to keep obsessing over it to get it to look good. Constantly brushing it every 5 minutes and going back over it 3 times with the straightener before I leave the house. If I sweat even just a little bit, even with hairspray it's all ruined, one drop of rain or even a little bit of humidity in the air and it's all ruined. It's just more stress than it's worth.
uhh wow i can’t relate. my darkskin friends accepted me entirely and never said anything about me being part spanish and lighter.
This was set in the 80s
@@Ddaee1580 exactly
Good for you. That doesn't mean everyone has that luxury
My biracial classmates went through hell and this was in the 2000s. My friends says its easier these days though.
I wish people would realize that this takes place in the 80's. Ya'll are trying to apply 2019/2020 standards to mid 80's. We didn't have Google or RUclips to look things up. Keep that in mind while you "why didn't she know?" everything.
This was literally my middle school experience and I'm black. My parents were pro-black so my hair was either cornrowed or in an afro/afro puffs. My mother did my hair in beautiful Fulani braids and the other black kids and white kids literally made fun of me and called me Kunta Kente. That was in 1987, before Instagram made it hot to have Fulani braids. Before Instagram existed. If you didn't grow up in the 80's things in this show might seem foreign to you.
Kids were definitely meaner in the 80's/90's. Schools didn't have zero tolerance bullying rules until those kids shot up Columbine High School. It was a different time.
@MisMupp It definitely depends on where you are in the US. There are parts that are not as diverse as others. I went to an elementary school in Glastonbury, CT in which me, my sister and one Asian girl were the only non-white students in a school with 6 grades.
By middle school there were maybe 25-30 POC students. Unfortunately some were so eurocentric minded that, yes, even being black themselves, still made fun of Afrocentric things.
Be thankful that you lived in a place in which you didn't have to go through that type of crap.
I wish people would understand that hair needs to be cover when they are swimming. That has nothing to do with a time period. I am sure that water has not changed.
Who go to gym class looking with a headscar on. Her aunt could told her to put her hair in a ponytail. Keeps the hair from going back in it's natural state.
You would be surprised
I knew girls who walked around school ALL DAY with a headscarf on. One girl I remember doing it because she didn’t want to mess up her hair, but why keep the scarf on when you got it done to show it off?! I guess she wanted it nice for after school situations, but people definitely did this at my school.
@@BeccaBeccaBecca22 Some of these girls didn't do their hair in the morning and that's why they aren't removing it 😂😂😂
A ponytail doesn't always keep the hair straight maybe the roots, but the ends of the hair can become frizzy mines did anyways even when i straighten it.
my thoughts exactly the i thought maybe in the 80s some people did that lol i don't know
Just have to say: I laughed my head off during the whole episode. This is some of the best and freshest comedy writing on TV today.
What episode was it
I identify with this so well. As a mixed person I'd get my hair done nice but people would not inform me what I needed to do to keep it from getting messed up
That isn't exactly anyone's responsibility except for your parents.
Me too!
Why would people need to inform you about your own hair??
So your parents who took you to get your hair done didn't tell you either?
I am.not mixed but I used to have the same issues when it came to my hair straightening now I rock my beautiful curls
I am just not feeling this show...😳

Bow’s hair problem reminds me of me and my sister when we went to Disney World. I have wavy hair and she has coarse curly hair. We both had almost afros by noon. Our hair was not made for humidity. 🤣
So I’ve been black all my life and I didn’t know the trick of tying your hair down for athletics. I probably would be more fit now 😂
Ummm it might help. But you should try doing a pony tail, and some type of scarf along the front hairline. But with either style, that sweat, mixed with them roots, just a disaster waiting to happen😩😂
try the two ponytail option. one ponytail at the front top of your head and 1 at the back botton of your head and wrap it with a scarf. it really does flatten the roots

I LOVE this show and I identify with it.
This was a really well thought out episode. It's nice to see you tackle serious topics with a little humour. Great job
Okay it's 2019, can we stop with the sassy black girl trope
Is it a trope though? 🤔 I knew a lot of black American kids like this growing up. Being African from Africa myself, I just saw it as a cultural thing- people acting a particular way because of how they grew up.
Not all black girls fit the bill, but there is a sassiness to African American female culture. It is NOT lesser than. It's just acceptable within the culture.
We have the same here. Some people groups culturally carry themselves a particular way. It's not negative, it just is. It's not universal, but it is common.
This actually fits better than the tone of the white girl. A trope sometime fits for a reason. Many support the sassyness I seen it. But it was not a big deal because it's common. Trope is not racist but this show makes everyone sound bad.
I have never disliked this bias show. There was always cool people & sucky people. You adapt to the person's character. This show reminds me of my sister & the sad way of looking at the slight contractdiction but this show just points out bad. I remember being asked all time but it's almost on same stress level as 'what's your name?' Many mixed kids that were popular as they were just said whatever ima just do me.
This is one person's view point not the standard.
My problem is that I've never seen a black girl on television portrayed differently. It's lazy writing.
Maybe if black girls didn't actually do this we could stop.(note: not all black girls. depends on neighborhoods, family dynamics, social situations and blah blah whatever else I need to add to not come off as painting black girl doing this since most people can't do the "math" in their own heads anymore, so to speak).

As a white woman I will honestly tell you that I love seeing other cultures Embrace their own diversity in hair their hair is so beautiful so natural way course I may just be bias I love when people embraced the curls when they have it no matter what type
I really like this show and it’s honestly so real! Great episode!
Me too! The Aunt is my favorite character. She's hilarious!
I think they are being picked on more because they came from a commune. It really don't matter about the mixed race as much. Because my best friend were mixed and people mostly messed with them because the were fresh from Mexico and couldn't conform to the US so quickly. My little sister on the other hand who is mixed with Indian, ( from India) was the most popular kid in her class and would Woop anyone a$@$ who crossed her.

This is giving me Wonder Years vibes. This show might be aight. Hope it goes deeper !
Sooooo y’all couldn’t find no dark skin/brown skin or unambiguous looking black ppl for brownish or blackish buuuuuut somehow for mixedish y’all could find all that so they can portray as bullies. I like how there is no full black ppl off lighter skin tones on the show other than the mixed kids. I’m sorry the show is problematic. Black ppl are the ones who took in mixed ppl so much so we uplift their lighter skin tone over darker skin tone buuuut y’all not ready for that. Just wanna day only reason you have struggle is because you are black
THIS! I really can't with this show. It's making me cringe every time the children get bullied by the black children. Like, why are they having the outspoken bullies be only black? Just adding to the stereotypes dark skin folk already have to deal with. It would be really nice if they could depict dark skin characters in a posotive light for once.
BrenMeetsWorld preach !
Why do you have to see color in the first place. bullies can be white and black
I didn’t get asked what I was mixed with until I moved to a blacker city. I’ve also had the stereotype of a darker skinned girl hating me for no reason, so... Some of you people here are in major denial....
So mixed people can be black people but black people can't be mixed people? The irony.
They made mixed a pure race and black people the mixed ones.

I've never seen anyone do that before. My impression when the girl first walked in with her hair wrapped up was that it was cultural/religious. Regardless, it's actually really cute!
It's mostly cultural and religious for some I never knew any girls to wrap their hair for gym maybe put it back but never a full on scarf.
I just remembered scarfs were banned in my district due to gang affiliations, so maybe the older gen and girls in different states wraped their hair for gym.

I'm not sure if i just learned something new or if they just told a huge lie. If anything, wrapping your hair should create more sweat, which will also undo a flat wrap. Also, your hair can still get wet under the scarf.
Caramel Brown it will produce more sweat but dries flat. Honestly its better to get a sweat headband for the edges and put your hair in a high pony till it dries imo for gym. But your hair will naturally revert and wrapping does help it keep straight. Most ppl wrap before bed or before a shower.
HeatJourney wow you must be prepared each time
Wrapping really don't do it, a satin cap AKA( JIFFY PUFF HAT) GIRL DOORAG is heaven sent straight from God. Yo hair will stay soft straight and frizz free....... Until you take it off.
I have 3c hair and when I go to the gym when my hair has been straighten (which is rare) I have to tie it down with a moisture absorbing fabric and keep it tied until fully dry (sometimes I sit under the dryer) to keep it from reverting. So in my case they are truthful about this but, some of the other stuff is questionable.

Oof! I feel the last part. As a mixed curly haired lady living in a humid environment I can assure all that sweat is curly (straightened) hair’s top enemy. It is a struggle when all your life you are told your hair looks awful or not well combed due to frizz. Especially when your mothers doesn’t have the same hair type as you do. It took me almost 29 years to accept my natural hair and learn how to properly care for it. On my own with all the tricks of the trade, I stopped overcompensating by sleeking my hair an just accepting my curls and my hair thanks me for it.
@Elle D Just didn't occur to me. Curly hair in my family is mostly had by males and they keep it ridiculously short. Since we have spanish and native american ancestry as well my hair is the rare exception, not the norm.

I was in elementary school 80s. AND my personal experience is I have NEVER saw students wrap their hair for gym class. I went to multiple schools in multiple states. You are assuming everyone commenting is very young. My mom is black I never lived on a commune and she never told me to wrap my hair for gym because people where I’ve lived didn’t do that at school. My only issue with the clip was acting like the girl was “clueless” because she didn’t wrap her hair for class when obviously this has NEVER been universal for black girls/women. 🙄
The entire time I watched this I was just like girl if you don’t put it in a bun and go about your business smh

I've never seen this happen a day in my life. Can't say it never did, but where??? What planet?
Pam right , Black kids in particular suck up to mixed kids and want to be their friend cuz they are seen as more attractive! But they’ve got a narrative to push I guess .
@Elle D Honestly I think that's a step in the wrong direction. You should want to be someone's friend bc they're nice and treat you right. I don't have children, but I talk to kids about things like this so they don't get accustomed to reading off the white supremacy script and those bs ideas become normal to them. Not on my watch!
Yeeeaaah, it's called water and gel. Problem solved Rainbow. 🙄 btw, I never as a black girl wore a scarf in gym class. We pull our hair up in a pony tail or bun. Whose writing this mess?
I feel you bow I feel you
One time I had got ly flat ironed and I got my ends cut.
Judy from Kc undercover is in mixed ish
Thanks so much! I knew she looked familiar!
She wore a wig. I just noticed that hmmm
I defiantly know about hair puffing up
That's my hair when it rains! Lol. And I don't care!!!
Just put it in a piney tail who tf wraps there hair in gym lol
So this show is basically everybody hates Chris?
I would of loved to have that long 😭
Y’all are so negative about this, THIS IS A SHOW! It shows things some mixed kids go through but VERY EXAGGERATED!
-but i rather curly over straight hair.
People should watch the episode. Making judgements off of a minute and a half video. It’s a 22 minute episode, people. 🙄
There’s a lot going on and explains everything you’re complaining about.
its unrealistic fam
LOL HIS BEADS CAME OUT
The bully in 0:23 went to my elementary school I have proof
This show gets dumber the more I watch it
Momostic ur not watching it this is a clip
Lmao
How so
All these comments about not white enough, not black enough, not mixed enough ... And I'm here being Asian and enjoying the show.
Too woke to be entertained?
I can relate my hair use to get like this all the time when I was younger still do but I’m not mix I like this
She has a whole damn black mama, how does she not know what to do with her hair?
I am Black and am glad I had sons. I keep my hair natural and no longer than 3 inches. I don't wear makeup and don't own a skirt or heels. If I had had a girl, that doesn't mean I would have learned to be more feminine. My way is quick and easy. Husband has stopped asking me to wear a dress.
Not all Black women are interested in hair like that.
Yeah none of this happens to mixed people
Fr
Maybe not with y'all but many people in comment section can relate also think about the timeframe and it's a show so it's going to be dramatized
Yes it does🙄
😐
There is an easy solution, just don't straighten your hair
easy for you to say
@@AS-cs9gi why exactly?
@@emmaadewole3252 I never see any naturals just leave their hair as is after the shower
@@AS-cs9gi what does that have to do with my comment or the video? Genuine question.
theres another spinoff from blackish?
1:05 I'm white and have curly hair and already knew all of that🤦♀️
Like if this way better than grown-ish
Never this show is unnecessary
ReginaK.C you know
THEY HAVE A BLACK MOM THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.
And what if the dads white?
@@dogetheiv5538 she specifically mentioned the mom and her race as is pertains to black women knowing how to do hair; in that the main character's mother didn't grow up in the same culture her children did, Further proving that she being a black American woman within this specific era/decade would have known how to do her child's hair.
my black mom didn’t do my hair either it’s a real thing
I have a black mom and she doesnt know shit about hair in general. She only wears weaves.
Exactly!
You going to gym like that😒 love that part
On Saturday night while I was at work ,my hair got frizzy so I had to put my hair in a ponytail.
