As a now old white ( as people who are darker than me like to assume I am) my best friend in kindergarten through 2nd grade was very dark complected. Her mother was from Ethiopia and her father was from Paris. She had these beautiful twists with different colored cute little hair clips. I had 2 basic braids on either side of my head to keep this stick straight hair from becoming what my Mom called a rats nest and taking hours to comb out. Mom would put silky ribbons on the ends of my plats to match my clothes. On Bridget’s last day at our school she gave me a pink poodle hair clip on one of my plats and I tied my ribbon on her beautiful twist. Here it is 50 years later and I still get teary eyed wondering what life did my friend have.. I always pictured her a beautiful model.. I still have that pink poodle hair clip in my jewelry box and throughout the years wore it.. even now.. and smile.
Awe this made my heart so happy to read! I hope you’re living a beautiful life and your childhood friend is too 🫶🏽❤️ I hope you’re able to find her one day! Have a great day!
Bitter sweet moment in this video! I love that she is happy and that you were able to treat her and make her feel special, but I hate that it was because she didn't feel good already with the hair she naturally has 😥 As she grows older, it will be tough to navigate, but I hope she is taught lots of self love and to appreciate her own beauty! ❤️ Not to say she can't also treat herself to getting her hair done, but I hope that she learns to love herself with her hair done & without her hair done ❤️❤️
KEEP THOSE CURLS HEALTHY!! I know how it feels to want to have ur hair straightened just because of growing up in a white neighborhood and school. I wished i never relaxed, permed, straightened my hair as much as I did. You could straighten it every once in awhile like what you did for her in this video was great! Make sure she learns to love her curls and her hair just the way it is because she will LOVE it even more when shes older
Right??? My little sister has the same amount of hair length the girl has in the video and her hair has never been permed or messed with! We just put her hair in braids and let her go!
White kids can be bullies. My hair didn’t like being straight it would frizz up after a few hours so I had to learn to love it curly. I would do my hair in all types of styles they couldn’t do and I got a lot of compliments that way. Once you stop trying to fit in and look like everyone else and you start being your best self they have no choice but to respect it. They loved Bantu knots and braids and would ask me to cornrow their hair.
@@JesusLovesEVERYTHING no, I grew up around all whites people, I wanted my hair straight, not because I hated my self, but rather because I wanted my hair to look like all of my friends. Her getting her hair straightened is honestly not that deep

It’s so important to teach our kids self love. I live in Europe in a predominantly white neighbourhood. I’ve taught my daughter to love her curls and skin from day one. From very young I kept instilling in her the love for her hair and her own brown skin. She’s now 9 and has never asked for her hair to be straightened. She’s proud of her brown skin and her curly, coily hair. I empowered her daily to know that she is beautiful, and there is no need for comparison. It’s a journey but we are getting there day by day.
@@NoveltyQueensmy daughter is almost 12. Hair down to her butt. Never interested in straightening, but we are from the Caribbean, so that's part of why. I teach her that her hair is beautiful, though, because these kids have social media
Lola is just perfectly rocking both hair styles. Love her big smile that what I would assume matches her big heart and personality. You go girl. That neighborhood going to learn a lot from you❤
Feel pulled two ways here. Totally rock the relaxed hair look bbuuttt her natural look is so beautiful too. Letting her explore with her own style is such a good choice mom. Learning to love herself.
Yes completely agree her hair before was absolutely gorgeous but you could see on her before and after how happy she was with straight hair, idk if you because she thought she'd fit in or if she just genuinely loved it but either way she looked absolutely beautiful with that hair style and you can see how happy she is with it i hope she trys other styles for herself and not for others 😊

BEAUTIFUL! Not just that she got what she wanted for "picture day" but that she has GORGEOUS naturally long beautiful hair. Good for her and good on you mom for keeping it R.E.A.L & not going the easy route & getting extensions, etc. ❤
Going to a predominantly white school when I was around her age I used to actually PRAY for straight hair. Getting it straightened was a once in a while treat. Looking back I'm glad my mom never gave in and got me a relaxer, I love my beautiful 4c hair now that I'm older!!
She have beautiful hair, it doesn't matter what neighborhood someone live in. She's a little girl just keep her hair taken care of. (Don't start with the flat irons)
I am mixed with 3B/3C hair and I always wanted straight hair as a child partially bc my white mom got stressed when doing my hair. She almost gave me a relaxer until a mixed woman at the beauty store told her not to do it 😭 I've learned to love my curls too. I'll take natural over straightened any day. I hope all curlie girlies know that their hair is beautiful as is and to only change it if its fun.
My mom gave in as did most. It’s hard but sad when can’t love ourselves. We both back natural now. Not even a press or flat iron can touch these curls now. ❤
I’m white with straight hair and think your daughters natural hair is amazing. It’s great to have a change but make her proud of what she has and that she doesn’t need to look like someone else. She’s beautiful as she is.
Thank you for this 💕 but what’s messed up a white person can see our beauty of our mane but yet this mom seems to have not poured into her melanin beauty the love of her own unique beauty .
@@shawnjackson6242 I'm white too, and I genuinely wish that more high profile Black women would wear natural styles. I get that's you're damned if you do, damned if you don't, which is absolutely unfair, but so long as Black women continue to embrace straight hair, whites will continue to see that as normal. I hope she understands that her hair is unique to her and that’s what makes her special. Heartbreaking that she wanted it straight because everyone else had it. Beautiful girl❤
My hair is extremely coarse, and straightened hair is easy to comb and maintain every day. The texture of African American women's hair is the only type that can be styled in any way. Hairstyles are forms of expression. Let people do whatever they want without giving them heat and judgment. Just my expert opinion!
She’s beautiful no matter how she styles her hair, and while I can understand her want to fit in, I hope that as she grows she only wants to straighten her hair because it fits the mood she’s in and not what others expect Beautiful young lady!

Learning just how versatile we can be with our hair also builds confidence and understanding of self. Good job mamma for being attentive to her concerns😊❤
the fact a 5 year old resorted to socially excluding another kid due to jealousy is what amazes me, it all starts so early man we need to teach them from the start 😢
Dina I just LOVE this. You’ve started your baby girl out with bomb confidence in who she is!! I’m astounded at just how versatile your hair is and I am loving that women are moving back to their natural hair. I grew up in the 70’s & as a child I was a mascot for my aunt’ college basketball. I was in awe of the girls’ big hair as a kid. Tell your baby girl we all like her pretty hair too:)💞🦋
Well done for raising an assertive and self loving daughter, we had a similar experience and my daughter reacted the same way, she was the only black girl in her class.
What a little cutie! Beautiful head of natural hair. Straightened is cute too. Hopefully she will learn and embrace the full beauty and versatility of her lockes.
Yeah I totally agree. My daughter has a head full of hair and now she’s 9 and has began asking me to straighten her hair. I encourage her to realize that she’s beautiful with her hair straightened and natural. It’s a process that most women especially brown has to experience.
Versatility is what makes black ppl’s hair unique. Nothing’s wrong with her wanting it straight. She’s a child in a new environment. It’s for the adults to provide that affirmation that in either style she’s unique and straight hair does not make her more/less beautiful. This is a beautiful child with beautiful hair. ❤
I believe a conversation about hair and culture is needed. She’s a beautiful young lady, so is her hair, however, if she feels an insecurity due to being in a different environment and conforming to that standard she’ll be able to differentiate herself between the two While always seeing herself and accepting herself when looking in the mirror no matter kinky curly straight or bald lol ❤
@@theaondracawley5441 it's a problem if you want to straighten your hair because you're around a bunch of white people. It's literally an insecurity and Should be addressed with reinforcement, self-love and care.

White kids moving to more diversed neighbourhoods want to try the hairstyles there. It's very normal. Just make sure they're doing it for the right reason. Doing it because you like the way it looks is very ok. Doing it because you hate yourself is very wrong. All parents of all colours should teach their children to love what and who they are.

Mom, Buy this product for her hair: Shea moisture brand - coconut & hibiscus curling gel souffle ( in a peach/orange container). It makes your hair really oily initially BUT after a couple of days it makes the hair easier to comb and manage. It also makes the texture easier. For people with thin hair, this product thickens your hair a little. I have thick hair but still love the product because it makes my hair manageable and soft AFTER the oily couple of days. Try it for at least 4 weeks. Also the formula changed within the last couple of years to a thick solid BUT you will see the benefits in your hair manageability.

You guys have things we wish we had...i mean the way you guys have so much rythm when you dance, the rich culture...yalls cooking...like damn... And by making it an issue...we effect not only the self image of the older generations...but the younger ones especially... We need our kids to be confident and love themselves for who they are
Her hair is flourishing in its natural state. Hoping that the school and neighborhood gets better for her so she’s able to flourish in her radiant black girl magic and not dim her light due getting to heat damaged hair
She never said school and neighborhood is bad; she just implied that her daughter has been wanting to get her hair to look like the people she is around. Humans, specifically kids, subconsciously gravitate towards being more similar to everyone else in their society and environments. It goes back to primal instinct to find safety in community. Sadly, this is also often how racism manifests.

Every little girl wants the exact opposite of what they have. I had pin straight hair when I was young so naturally I wanted curly thick hair 🙃

I did this and my daughter is 19, she prefer her natural hair over straight hair. Teaching our children self love is key
@@NoveltyQueensmy daughter is almost 12. Hair down to her butt. Never interested in straightening, but we are from the Caribbean, so that's part of why. I teach her that her hair is beautiful, though, because these kids have social media

@@shawnjackson6242 I'm white too, and I genuinely wish that more high profile Black women would wear natural styles. One is for little girls like this sweetheart, but also because a lot of whites are so accustomed to seeing straight hair on Black women that natural styles look "weird" to them. I get that's you're damned if you do, damned if you don't, which is absolutely unfair, but so long as Black women continue to embrace straight hair, whites will continue to see that as normal. My hair is extremely coarse, and straightened hair is easy to comb and maintain every day. The texture of African American women's hair is the only type that can be styled in any way. Hairstyles are forms of expression. Let people do whatever they want without giving them heat and judgment. Just my expert opinion!
She’s beautiful no matter how she styles her hair, and while I can understand her want to fit in, I hope that as she grows she only wants to straighten her hair because it fits the mood she’s in and not what others expect

Mom,
Buy this product for her hair: Shea moisture brand - coconut & hibiscus curling gel souffle ( in a peach/orange container).
