    I have had a lot of stick for not cutting a slot in the house wall on extensions , not for cold but for damp ! I’ve opened up the cavity in the past but they weakens the wall , some inspectors compromise and ask for a grinder cut with DPC slid into it .
    As for that out house did anybody spot the old flue just gobbed up with 4 brick on brick ahhhhh I hate that . They got a decent match on the brick then went and left the halves in which looks shocking ! 😱🧱👍🏼

      That is interesting. I have cut that slit in the past and filled it with foam. No building inspector has ever asked for it where I live and they hardly every ask for cavity trays over steels when you are doing a single storie extenstion.

    3rd item Fill the bath up with cold water and then do your tiling, that way the bath won't leak when it is filled and someone gets into it.

    I put 3 or 4 rounds of gaffer tape on and then use a wrench to move it. After you have put it back on just unwrap the tape and it is ready to be used again for something else.

    Re. Butting new cavity wall into existing, a separation slot is required in my area not for cold bridging but for damp. We typically refer to it as a 'vertical DPC' and it's only a saw blade cut wide with often a (possibly pointless) bit of DPC slipped in. Sometimes cut is wider to allow a bit of insulation, and occasionally properly opened up to full cavity width. Of course in the situation where an existing wall continues up above an extension, then that will offer a damp path (as well as thermal bridge) down into the wall below, so usually retrofit cavity trays will also be specced (and tied into roof/wall junction flashing) to block any moisture from travelling down. Possibly all a bit OTT but being a seaside location we can have severe exposure conditions.

    Keep them coming, love the items. only disagree with the item about doing the little jobs for customers, it can backfire! they will sometimes not consider you for a larger job as they think you only do small things. if someone wants to spend the biggest amount of money after buying their house they want to feel happy that you are capable of doing the job and not just a handy man, keep a record of the achievements you are proud of & post on face book or website, people do investigate, wouldn't you!

    Thermal bridging? What about damp passing across? I daresay spraying a silicon liquid on the wall behind the starter kit would go a long way to help

    One answer for the first question is to use a strap wrench to undo the chromed parts of the tap, the handles now are plastic with a rubber strap, also handy for high security jam jars when you can't unscrew the bloody lid.

    Great collection of probs well responded to Roger. That Bamby one, with high level timber clad he could punch a couple of inch diameter holes thru eh? Could even use some cut up 90 deg gutter pipe to rain protect may be? Looks like someone put uPVC doors on which I'm sure is the prob, I bet before them, there were just timber doors with a good inch missing from top and/or bottom?

    Hi, (i'm) Roger Bisby - Curious about bleach attracting more moisture? I have an issue in my shower tray where I regularly use bleach. it's a slight leak ( and I know it needs sorting), but wondering what you mean by it? thanks

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  5 лет назад

      If you use bleach on absorbent surfaces the bleach dries on the surface and the hygroscopic salts in the bleach attract moisture from the air.
      On tiles and surfaces which become wet on a regular basis it is not an issue but on emulsion paint a film of dry bleach act like a sponge.

      anyways, you have a lot of good info in your videos, though lots of it doesn't pertain to the codes we have in Norway,,, no - and i say absolutely no - pro builder would upload a video or even think about recommending a diy-er to seal a wet room without adequate procedures, and certainly not only as a "suggestion",,, propper sealing is under strict codes and should only be certified by a pro (ie. you can seal yourself but have it certified when done,,, i did it myself some yrs ago with up 5 layers of sealant layers),,, if you don't have certification, leaks/damage will be void from the insurance company (pronto),,, besides, why build/renovate when you can expect to be up to £100k short on price when you want to sell the property w/o propper certification? (that's a real saving or loss)

    • @thechrissyb
      @thechrissyb 5 лет назад +2

      Sounds like exactly like salt to me, you can get efflorescence remover but it doesn't necessarily stop it coming back. Alot of of the time its from the bricks getting wet then drying again leaving the salts behind on the brick surface. Just brushing it off is always a good idea, eventually the bricks will run out of salt in them.

    • @julianthornton9076
      @julianthornton9076 5 лет назад +2

      You normally only get salt leach after the build is new, is it a new extension or build? you can also get salts if there is a leak from roof etc or gutter if the property is not new & it reactivates the salts & washes them through the brickwork, sadly in building salts or water ingress don't come with a label so can be a case of sherlock Holmes! good luck.

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  5 лет назад

      Baz
      It is likely to be efflorescence, which is salt that is in the sand or bricks. It is activated and moved by damp so it is a sign that some damp is coming through. What height is it?
