    There is a 3rd option for the joists on the extension and it's the one that I tend to use a lot. I fix jiffy hangers to a length of timber the same size as the joists then I fix it to the wall on the house with threaded bar and chemical fixing and build them in on the new outside wall at the other end of the joists. I find it a lot easier than getting the brick hangers level on the original outside wall

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  5 лет назад

      I have seen a similar idea set out on steel plate. It is fine if the building inspector likes it but my approach is to screw a batten onto the wall and sit the hangers on it while the mortar sets then take the batten away. You can do a similar thing by attaching the joists and then winding them up with a pair of acrows and a board and grouting in the hangers.

      @@SkillBuilder the building inspector seems fine with it as I've never been pulled up on it and a lot of the architects around my area tend to ask for it to be done this way on their drawings

    No good tradesmen should ever be cheap and cheap tradesmen are very expensive. If you want good quality work that means you should expect to pay the going rate. Realistically that means paying upwards of £30-£40 per hour and double that for a good one. If you want work done in London then you will be paying considerably more than that.

    Forget about the floor joists and fix the poorly laid soil pipe and if you are considering hanging the stack from the joists don't, the bounce will cause problems over time, And I couldn't see any lintel above the brick block work, there's some bollocks conveniently in the way, but I see a block above the soil pipe that's been curved out. No lintel.

    I've just got a builder in he's done brickwork,,,, and he's just wondering how to do the floor. FFS this is why our trades get a bad name, if you can't do it don't do it, get some time on the tools with a proper builder don't risk it because if your like me and you live in a small town, your career will be over before it's even started and you'll end up travelling to London everyday because knowbody wants you in your home town. And before all the trades in London get started I didn't mean that personally your probably sick of ending up with the shit that gets sent your way because I'm sick of rectifying it. Hi I'm building a timber frame lean to car port (3m x 6m) and want to make sure I'm using all the correct joints and fixings, which I think I have covered except for one. Which is the correct way to attach rafters and other timbers together in the frame? Some say always use nails (galvanised of course) to allow for flex others say screws such as Timberlok, I'm using galvanised coach bolts to attach the posts to main loadbearing timbers. I was planning to use nails (Sheradised for the rafter hangers, will be using birdsmouth joints) and galvanised elsewhere, is it ok to use the equitant of Timberlok (suggestions please) for fixing the noggins (horizontal supports) between rafters. Many thanks love the videos

    It's never cheap,, my missus I love so much and she will buy the bathroom for our home and with my labour and the cost i then put in for all the ancillaries it's usually around the same price doubled to what my thrifty wife pays, but I know it will last, my bathroom is 12 year's old but it was designed to make you feel as if in a hotel and it hasn't aged and the grout isn't black or orange,, cleaning correctly helps to keep your bathroom as good as the day you created it,, pro tip, buy two radiators identical at the start, one is for the future when corrosion happens, if you can afford it buy all brass wear (or chrome) as well, so you can easily replace,, if you have a sliding shower door buy the door runner's as extra,, the trouble is that if you contract that out it will cost more because nobody wants to break down the cost of parts, so always know the product being fitted before and research for the parts, that's why my bathroom looks as fantastic as the day I finished it. Future proof the fact that after 10 years those products will be obsolete is what I should have said, 👍

    As for doing the work yourself to make savings, depending on the skills level. I built a £15k extension for £2k. Everything that was hidden was reclaimed, joists etc, roof tiles. Bricks came from end of jobs, same as insulation etc. Bought cancelled ordered windows/ door. If you've got the time to hunt the materials down, it can be done so cheap.

    im a diyer, not experienced tho. so youtube is a great help for some things. but for the little things that will be 2nd nature to a builder, those are why u pay someone. if i built a pergola, a wall in garden, i can do it, but will take me a lot longer to do. also helps to learn about what u want before u ask a builder.

      If you treat people as human beings and look after their needs you get the best out of them. Of course you don't have to because they will fulfill their contract and do what is required but if they like you they will go the extra mile. There are people I will turn out for at 2 in the morning when they have a burst pipe and people I won't. If you have never tried showing people a little love I highly recommend it.
