      @Pay Attention Mr Officer Wow. Could you even live a normal life with that kind of paranoia? Go see a therapist or something. The example you said is not hating them. In that case, it's uncommon to see alot of foreigners in one place because as you said, Korea is homogenous country. And next, it's because of the anxiety, that a foreigner would start talking to me, and I feel obliged to answer that question with my bad english, because not replying to them would be seen to some(YOU) as a 'homophobic' action. Being in a place filled with foreigners outside Itaewon is like that for Koreans. And I think, some portion to this problem derives from some foreigners like you, who say 'Koreans hate foreigners, because they don't want to sit next to me.' And have you ever been here, or just been here via a weaboo channel or a vlog chanel. That's what a few weabs said to me when I was outside Korea.

      A stranger approaching someone on the streets with small talks is not normally looked upon in Korea. The only Koreans who do this are religious recruiters who belong to cults, salesman/marketers, people with ulterior motives, and crazies.

    we don't have small talk culture. If you try to talk someone, they would think you are a weird stranger. That is normal. I think old generation Korean people are more comfortable with saying something first to strangers. But if Korean got conversation by chance, they would think boundary to you first.

      You are so right! When I went to Busan for the weekend when I was studying in Seoul the older generation was super friendly and eager to talk to you. When these older guys saw a bunch of foreigners get on the train they wants to ask us like "Why did you come to Korea?" "Do you like it?" "Are you studying Korean?" and so many other things. An older lady even helped my friend when she spilt red sauce on her white shirt at a restaurant by scrubbing it out for her! Truly very kind people.

    • @gotwa229
      @gotwa229 5 лет назад +26

      Yes, I worked in Germany and even as an American, was surprised at how easily Germans can strike up conversations with complete strangers in public and even arrange meetings or further interactions on the basis of one chance encounter on the streets. I believe this is b/c of the low-context nature of the German language that allows German speakers to quickly not only tune into each other, but cooperate and collaborate with each other without much vetting, scrutinizing, testing, etc. Even among Americans, individuals usually have to be vetted somewhat if you want to make a meeting out of it, or even if you want to discuss something further with a complete stranger you met on the street. Koreans? Forget it. You would automatically be written off as some kind of religious nut, e.g., a Jehovah's Witness or a Mormon if you tried to accost someone on the street, and if you continued to further harass someone, they would call the police and charge you with harassment. Koreans definitely do NOT network on the street, never mind have conversations with complete strangers. At a minimum, a third-party introduction is required, and/or a thorough vetting into your social, educational and familial background akin to a job interview and background investigation if someone is interested in carrying on further with you either for business or for social networking reasons. That said, the high-context nature of the Korean language is the major reason for this, where relationships, conversations, meetings, etc., need an established context to have any real meaning.

    • @eliftr06
      @eliftr06 5 лет назад +20

      @@gotwa229 I think what he/she has meant by comparing the people in Germany and Korea is the opposite of what you seem to have understood. What he/she has tried to say is: "When compared to the people in my hometown in Germany, the people there(in South Korea) are way more open to conversations and/or making actual contacts.". This can also be deduced from his/her other sentences. Anyway, I personally don't think that the structure of the language could have such a big impact directly on the communication skills of individuals. In this case, it's the culture that has an impact on the language, not vice versa. Languages are partly shaped by and mostly used in accordance with the cultural patterns of the society in which they are spoken. So, it is not the Korean language which is responsible for Koreans' unwillingness or timidity in speaking to a stranger, it's their reserved culture. Although I don't believe there is something wrong with the high-context or reserved cultures, I think that some Asian countries such as Korea and Japan take these cultural behaviours to extremes.

      Ajushi have seen foreigners in their country for 70+ years, mostly American, coming and going without making any real difference in their everyday lives. They pass on the street on the way to buy souvenirs or on the way back from gochujang, around e-mart or on leave at Jejudo but don't really have interact with the people around them. So it's weird to be stopped by a foreigner practicing small talk. "Why did you stop me?" is a perfectly reasonable response.

I’ve found they don’t do this too much in other countries tho, so sometime I’ll be visiting another country and see some random person and just give them a quick smile and they just stare/glare at me... So there are some people who actually get surprised when we speak fluent or unaccented English? It's a weird dynamic.
      ...
      **As in, we are not American enough to be treated equally on a social level. Apparently _someone_ further down in the comments got the idea that I was touting superiority to foreigners' experience when in Asian countries, even though _I have never mentioned anything of the sort._

Nowhere did I express the sentiment that said experience is superior or "worse off" than that of foreigners in Asian countries such as Korea.
      In addition, it seems that you read what I said as a serious complaint. I did not "have no regards for [my] own identity" because what I said was meant as a *joking matter* and not a serious issue such as economic or racial segregation.

      moyo jook the easiest way to learn to speak a new language is by surrounding yourself with it, for example, label things around your household so that you can get used to saying it, write it in hangul and then in romanization. Also listening to music is great help, and watching shows in Korean is also good, because you’ll learn how to speak, and pick up pronunciation easier. Also writing down the alphabet repeatedly is good (write it in blue ink, blue makes it easier to remember). When having a conversation also try to translate it to the language you’re trying to learn (if that makes sense). I hope this helped! (Probably not lol)

I think if I had time to just sit down and study it I'd do fine but with school I need to focus on my studies that mean something rather then something I enjoy :( It's sad but I don't have time currently

      Do you think her accent is similar to Jay's accent when they introduced themselves at 0:21? Of course, perceptions are personal and I'm not here to say you're wrong or something like that, but in my view, she's trying to reproduce the American accent with a pretty decent performance.
      PS: After watching the video again I could see your point and you're right. When they didn't understand her "fast" English accent, she had a second one a little more slow to help them understand her. Get my 67th thumbs up!

    Korea is kinda different from China. In Korea most of the people I met were pretty reserved and very polite but didn't talk a whole lot...But in China, you say one word to most anyone on the streets as a foreigner and they'll just start a conversation with you.

      @@marcellachan9787 Yes, I'm talking about Chinese attitudes towards foreigners. Where I live in the northwest of China in Qinghai province, many of the locals will talk a lot to you if you're a foreigner, and often come up and start a conversation.
      And also, many of the Koreans I'm friends with and many that I interacted with in Korea were friendly, but more shy and usually would wait to talk unless you talked to them first.
