When I was a teenager me and my best friend Bill each has a cob pipe. We got some cherry flavored tobacco from the drug store and ran off to the woods, sat with our backs against trees and smoked our cob pipes. We just sat and blew smoke and didn’t even talk. That was my best memory from that era. Cob pipes are great.

Corn cob is an American tradition, I love mine and I smoke while I run my wrecker, which is an amazing job I love where I get to help people and use my skills to help my town run. I work hard to honor my ancestors, too, and to provide for my family. Living my best life.

One of the reasons life seams to move faster when your older is, when you are 10 years old you only have that many years to compare life to. If you live to be 80 then you have eight Times that to compare life to. I sometimes tell my family that life is like the snowball rolling down hill.

You got me. Your videos are like a box of chocolate. I happen to love my country gentlemen corn cob pipe (that’s the cob I love holding) but clearly that’s not the most important thing. Mostly, the tobacco I put in it could be more important, or not. I do plenty of things that I enjoy, but do I? I have lots of hobbies and I enjoy lots of things. Do I feel like I’ve done something? Most of the time, no.
And you are renovating an old tobacco farm.
I hope to end up in Idaho someday enjoying more nature. Fortunately, my wife shares that idea. Looks like I’m gonna be enjoying all the cigars and pipes while I’m there as well which makes me happy to think about.
    Edit and addition:
Thank God I do what I love, construction. I love being out there and doing it every day. Couple years ago I started doing it for myself. Thank God I have clients. They keep calling, I keep working. I feel like I’m being taken care of while I take care of myself and my family.

I actually prefer the taste of tobacco out of a corncob rather than a briar pipe. I rarely smoke briar these days. To my taste buds, the briar kind of subdues the flavor of tobacco with the corncob doing the opposite. I have had briar and meerschaum pipe smoke like crap. IMHO, it comes down to the draw. If the draw is too tight, now matter how nice the wood or meerschaum is, it's not going to smoke good.

    • @williamfrost4055
      @williamfrost4055 2 года назад +5

I'm definitely a fan of meerschaum pipes but in traditional shapes. briar not so much. Already have more pipes than I can figure out what for. But like 90/95% of the time I find myself smoking the same meerschaum pipe I can smoke 2 maybe 3 bowls out of it in a day on consecutive days and not have problems with moisture. You have me thinking I should try a corncob though.
If you want an easier draw you can pretty easy drill out the draft hole a little bigger even with a hand drill the existing draft whole works as a pilot just run a slightly bigger drill bit through it will follow the existing draft hole.

I have a few “high end” pipes and a few cobs. My cobs run from a 7 dollar MM Legend to a 2024 MM Honeypot. So, all in all my pipes range from $7-$300. I’ll be brutally honest, may favorite smoke is my $7 corncob. I didn’t want to admit this to myself but hey it’s the truth! Every pipe smoker needs to have at least one of each though a briar and a cob. Two COMPLETELY different experiences!

  • @Supermodelyum

Comparing a briar pipe to a corn cob is not really a fair or reasonable comparison. It certainly isn't what what people mean when they ask; Is an expensive pipe better than a cheap pipe(?). For that comparison, people want to know; Is a $1800 Dunhill pipe really better than (say) a $90 Savinelli ?
Briar & Corn Cob pipes are completely different materials & have different purposes. - I have 30 or so "nice" briar pipes that I reach for regularly. (From $75-$300). I also have a few corn cobs. The beauty of corn cob pipes is that they don't hold on to the flavour of the previously smoked tobacco. So corn cobs are fantastic for testing new blends, trying out new tobaccos that you don't want to effect (or be effected by) a pipe that you have designated for a particular tobacco type. (Some people don't care, but I never smoke a VarPer in a Latakia pipe, never an aromatic in Vaper or Latakia pipes etc..). They are also great for working out in the yard. If they fall out of your pocket you don't care as much (I've lost 2 nice pipes in the back 20 acres. Bummer!)
So, between briar and corn cob; Which is BETTER? - It all comes down to the needs of the moment.

I haven't watched the video yet, however i recently acquired an old grabow grand duke. Before the grabow i using some cheap headshop pipe made intaly, I've noticed a huge difference in how the grabow smokes. The grabow is a billard versus the other other being bent and a little bigger. The stem fits tighter on the grabow allowing for a tighter and smoother drag.

I know this is not the right channel, and not the real topic, but yeah, the is a world of differences. Here in Italy you get to visit the best artisans and learn a lot if you have passion. So if you compare a handmade expensive briar pipe with a cob (not a bing'a favorite Savinnelli, have One, enjoy It a lot, but it's an entry level), a real expensive well mare briar pipe, it's like comparing two different worlds. They are both pipe, but they are made for different way of enjoying the hobby.

I, personally, do not like either a corncob pipe or a Meerschaum pipe. The corncob makes the tobacco taste burnt, and the Meerschaum, chalky. A briar is what I like, and a large bowl, like the Peterson 03 is the best I have every smoked. I am sure for others the corncob is their best, it is all what we as individuals like. As stated, the tobacco is the star of the show. A cool, slow burn is what makes my smoke the best... Happy piping, ALL.

Hmmmmm...the meer gets prettier as I smoke though. Anyhooo. I will say this the first few smokes out of that cob will be horrible, then be ok but have an aftertaste of corn. Reason being My pipes are a tool that I’m hard on all day every day like my work boots and blue jeans. I started smoking pipe as a alternative to rolling my own cigarettes. Which I started doing to save money when I started my farm. I’m tough on pipes I clean the bowl with pocket knife. I clean the stem with a long nail. And the mouth peice with wire. I bang them out on my hands or pants or whatever is around. I constantly have it in my mouth smoking cigarette tobacco that’s classed as menthol pipe tobacco for tax reasons. And the corn cob pipe holds up just as good as any expensive one for me. I’ll swear by them.

I love the Peterson system so much that I have just bought another. I love my lakeland flakes and the Peterson brings out all of the nuances. Lost my 50 dollar Molino. My first pipe. Had served me well for 3 years. Was heartbroken. Bought a 140 dollar Peterson. Felt better. Smoking it while writing this.

I’ve been piping for the better part of 15 years, so I’m definitely not an authority. I will say that I have many many pipes, from meerschaum to briar to cobs to homemade pipes from apple and Myrtle. Of the three main types, I prefer meerschaum, then cobs in second place. The thing is, I’m not gonna take a 250 dollar meer out on the canoe or into the woodshop. That’s where cobs are handy. I lose a 7$ cob over the side, or drop it in a pool of lacquer, I’m not gonna cry. I lose an expense pipe, I’m gonna be mad at myself. Corncob pipes have been my favorite until about a year ago when I finally bought a meer. I say this, different pipes for different occasions. 😊 cobs are awesome for the price. I recommend them to anyone who is simply curious. Cheers bro

Regardless if you're starting out I'd go for the Cob pipe. Cheap smokes good doesn't ghost if you try different tobaccos. Nothing beats a bit of Huckleberry Fin moments. If you enjoy smoking a pipe then move onto a briar pipe.
Oh I have big hands so any pipe sits in my hand fine if alittle small 😂.

I'm 18 and I feel so lucky, yet proud, that I am asking such philosophical questions now rather than later. Most of the people I know just live their life. Me? I actually have a problem of thinking too much about what matters most and how I want to live, that I don't get around to actually living it. I am determined to make it work, however, and I hope I will build a meaningful life from now - a young age.

Good luck my man. I thought the same when I was 18, yet life rushed past my eyes and now I am 32. It's really easy to get lost in the experiences in life, because what matters most to you isn't readily gratifying, and all the other unimportant stuff hit you with dopamine all the time. Don't let that take you away!

I have 10 pipes in my rotation.
    I have 5 MM pipes… 4 cobs and 1 hardwood ( maple)
I have 5 briar pipes.. a Savinelli 614(Bent Billiard) Peterson Spigot, 2 “ Estate “ pipes ( they belonged to my great uncle.. a Dr Grabow and a Basket briar), and a HIS Churchwarden.
Eventually I would like to get a clay and a meerschaum pipe.
I think it’s a matter of quality of the pipe and style. I’m not a big fan of a large heavy bowl .. I want to be able to clench it if need be without it being too uncomfortable. I’m content with the pipes I currently own, but I would like to have a an eclectic collection

Okay man.. gotta pick a fight on the cob thing lol I find most of them to be comfortable with my favorite being the acorn devil. Now they don’t smoke as smooth as an expensive pipe which is true but they are light and if one breaks or gets lost it wasn’t a huge loss monetarily. Sad none the less but not a huge loss. Now on the other hand some of my favorite pipes are nice briars from dagner pipes. They are just a pipe that makes me feel good to use, 100% joyful experience. I also just received a couple Peterson pipes as a gift from a friend who took a vacation to Ireland. ( I asked for a simple clay Irish pipe and I was surprised with two clays and two peterson pipes! 🤯) so I have yet to experience those but I bet they are fantastic for sure. Now other than that, this is he first of your videos that I’ve seen and am now a new subscriber 🤘🏻 I dig your authenticity on camera 🤘🏻

In a nutshell, that’s why I took up pipe smoking. The pipe, tobacco, and smoking are mostly props while I sit my retired body down with a coffee or glass of wine and ponder all those thoughts. I’m at the point where I no longer need to make sense of them. (“Hey you kids, get off my lawn!”) Not.
