64yo grandpa here. Haven't smoked a pipe since my college years and tobacco only a few times. Came across my mint Whitehall Italy briar from 1981. Did buy Captain Black because I'm old school, but with your help my first evening was real enjoyment. My house smells terrific. A new hobby. Thank you.

Great video. I just finished restoring 10 estate pipes from the 60s that I purchased at a NYC flee market in the early 1980s. I haven’t tried smoking any of them yet, but this was super helpful and is motivating me to give it a try this weekend. I did purchase a corncob for herbal smoking blends, so that will be the 1st I use. Keep the videos coming!!

I just recently started smoking a pipe. I was a cigarette smoker for 20 odd years, then switched to a vape several years ago. I started out with Backwoods Cherry, which I quite enjoy and I also ordered a Captain Black Dark, a black cavendish, which I also enjoy. Not sure why you would say the Captain Black is hard to smoke, it isn’t, and it’s pretty good, not as pleasant to those in the vicinity as the cherry but I think it’s good.
As far as buying a pipe from Amazon or Etsy, this can be done as well. You just need to know what you are looking for, and always check the reviews, this will keep you from buying something you should not smoke out of.
There are many different woods that can be made into pipes, the wood needs to be dense, and not produce harmful chemicals when heated.
If you are looking to get into smoking a pipe, you are most likely contemplative and intelligent. You don’t need another man to tell you what not to do, you can figure that out on your own.
    Enjoy your smoke, gentlemen.

This is a fantastic video for any begginer. It hits all the finer points that may be missed for a new smoker.
But there is one thing i dissagree with. Presbyterian, i think there would be too much Lat for a new smoker. Maybe a EMP or Chealsy Morning, or plantation evening would give you a bit of a Vaper with a hint of Lat (if you really want to buy bulk.

Don’t just throw away a new tin of tobacco, for whatever reason you think you don’t like it. Give it some time. Try it more than once or twice, especially if you ar new to smoking, because you will have different opinions as time goes on and experience is acquired. Over all, great start up video. But I believe the smoking method is the most important part of learning to smoke which you said you were going to make a video about, so that’s great.

Great tutorial, very informative from top to tail. On an aside, your Lav mic is fantastic: picking up the very soft sounds. Is the audio just the lav or did you use a secondary mic for the room tone? Been looking for a good lav. Vids that are completely devoid of room tone as seems the trend sound so sterile.
Also can appreciate the dad joke patter.

What are the cons of inhaling? I’m using a pipe to get away from cigarettes. You and another guy have both said “you don’t inhale pipes” but even when I smoke cigars I inhale them. The extra bite feels great and I love it.
Is it worse for you to inhale say an organicly grown Virginia compared to a cigarette?

I smoke both cigars and pipe tobacco. I can say with confidence that tobacco for pipes and cigars is way different than the process for cigarettes. I disagree with you about cigar, because the process is just as strict as pipe tobacco. A lot of them even use aging method that can last up to 5 years, just let the tobacco mature on its own. You should do research on premium cigars. There are thousands of brands just like pipe tobacco.
And in the cigar world, the cigar smokers are often more fanatic about avoiding flavored or infused cigars. I don't see that kind of conviction in pipe community. Some lounges even prohibit flavored cigars because the smoke can interfere with the enjoyment of smoking cigar with pure premium tobacco.
