    This is a good video. As an experienced pipe smoker, I find it good to revisit introduction videos because we develop bad habits when we forget key steps. I often notice new pipe smokers doing a better job because they are being careful to do everything correctly, whereas more experienced pipe smokers sometimes create problems for themselves and their pipes in their arrogance or haste.

    Today with the cost of tobacco taxes. In Canada it's $70 for a 50gr pouch. I found that if I fill my pipe to the top I end up stopping smoking before the pipe is done. I get about three smokes out of one bowl. But if I pack the bowl for one smoke I would go through 5 smokes compared to filling it fully. I only press lightly the ashes and pour them out before a relight. And I will light and puff two or three times initially then poke down the barely lit tobacco due to it fluffing up from the first light then I relight it and get it going properly. Also if you are using a butane lighter (never use a Zippo unless you like gasoline taste) and always light the pipe from the same side you will find that you start to burn your pipe into an oval opening. Wooden matches are better and don't do that because you hold the flame deeper than you can with a lighter which bends the flame into the top of the bowl. Also don't constantly clean your pipe you really only need to clean it if it gets too hard to draw on it. And as for cleaning the bowl out don't do that either you want to let a char build up on the inner bowl which will increase the life of your pipe considerably. Also trying to guage when you are over smoking your tobacco which is basically smoking the char buildup and burning through the wood of the pipe will get better. You will be able to guage when it's done from the subtle change in the smoke and increased drawing that happens. You don't want a lot of dottle (aka dried out crispy scorched unsmoked tobacco) left over. And if the pipe is getting too hot let it go out and relight it later. If you can't hold it for more than a couple seconds it's too hot. It will be hot though but you should be able to hold it for over 5 seconds without wincing in pain. And try not to bite onto the stem too hard. I do this and hear a crack now and then. It's easy to do. Also a bent pipe stem is easier to hold in your teeth than a straight one is. I like bent pipes for the ergonomics but there's something about a straight bulldog briar that I'm addicted to. I love bulldogs

    Very good video and I keep coming back for reference. I had two questions if you or anyone could answer. When tamping down gently, how much are you tamping down? Enough to just return the tobacco to its original level or keep pressing down more? I guess I’m wondering when should you stop tamping. Now forgive me with asking this question as it may sound very ignorant as I assume everyone knows this, but what is “puffing” and how do you do it properly? I only smoked cigarettes long time ago and know you don’t inhale the smoke, but what is the key, or art of “puffing”? Thank you

    • @PerGeorgJensen
      @PerGeorgJensen  4 года назад +4

      Hi Justin. The questions you are asking are very good and at the same time a bit difficult to give you a clear answer. However, I will try to do my best to give you an answer even though both of your questions have to do with feelings.
      The first question was about tamping the tobacco down. The only way to smoke a pipe is when you have a little resistance in the air flow of the pipe. When you make the initial light the tobacco rises automatically and you lose the resistance. To get this back you use your tamper and the best you can do is to breathe through the pipe while you tamp the tobacco down. You should be looking for a change in air flow, and when you feel this, stop tamping anymore. Relight and enjoy the smoke. Every time you feel the disappearing resistance you should tamp once more. The first sigh is that the tobacco doesn’t stay lit and that you are having problems with keeping it lit. This is a sign to use the tamper and you should tamp down the tobacco until you feel its back. This means that you are pressing the tobacco a little under the level from before tamping. Stop tamping when you feel the resistance is back.
      Your second questions were about puffing and how to do that in a proper way. Well, I have to dig down in the feeling basket once more and try to explain what puffing is. It is simple to answer, because puffing is the basic of all pipe smoking. If you didn’t puff the pipe tobacco wouldn’t burn. It's like a wood stove where you need the oxygen to start the burn. In a pipe there is no air circulation except when you puff. So puffing is artificial respiration for the pipe tobacco, it keeps it burning. A puff you can compare to the feeling when you are drinking with a straw; a little vacuum in the mouth and you start bringing air to the tobacco and carry the smoke to your mouth. Small puffs are preferable as you don’t want the temperature to rise too much in the pipe bowl. If this happens the natural sugar in Virginia tobacco will turn from a sweet taste into acid which will give you a bite or irritation in your mouth. The lower the temperature you can smoke at, the milder the tobacco will be and you will also get more flavors than if you smoke at a high temperature.
      I hope this is to understand and I hope it will help you on your journey into pipe smoking country.

    • @justinprince971
      @justinprince971 4 года назад +1

      Per Georg Jensen Wow! Thank you for your response and great answers and gives me a better understanding on what I am doing. One more quick question though. After my initial light and I let the pipe go out, when I breath through it still has the same resistance before I lit the pipe. Would I still need to tamp, or did I do something wrong or not enough of? I do the 10 puffs like you advised

    • @PerGeorgJensen
      @PerGeorgJensen  4 года назад +2

      After doing the 10 puffs I would recommend you to tamp the tobacco down. The reason is also to crush the half burned tobacco, which will burn much easier because the smaller pieces of tobacco, so that your next re-light will be perfect. I learned this from my father many decades ago, and I must say that still today it is the easiest way for me to light a pipe. Happy smoke :)

    • @justinprince971
      @justinprince971 4 года назад +1

      Hello again Jensen, I had another question if you didn’t mind? How does one properly fill and smoke flake tobaccos? I picked some up since we last talked and following online guides and videos I seem to be ending up with disappointment with them and burned my tongue real good. I’ve tried both rubbing out and followed your video but keep running into the tobacco isn’t lighting so well and have to keep lighting it and getting it really hot and encountering half way the tobacco gets super hard to tamp down and I just end up dumping it . With food and stuff same results but I’m not able to tamp it down hardly. Please bestow your wisdom upon us for flake tobacco the same way you did for this video and correcting my errors with your responses. Thank you

    I think this must be one of the best videos on youtube on how to pack a pipe😊
    What do you think of these 9mm filters Per? I am struggling with toungebite from smoking MB Mixture Scottish blend so I tried these german filters and they do help, but finds them to take the flavour away. Any tips? I do like the idea that these filters make the smoke somewhat "healthier", but is it worth it when they thin out the smoke and the taste?

    • @PerGeorgJensen
      @PerGeorgJensen  3 года назад +3

      Thank you for liking my video. I tried to keep it simple and it seems it worked :) Concerning filters I personally think it is a matter of believe concerning health. In short, there is no such thing as healthy smoking. Smoke because you like it. It is true that the filters take away some of the flavours of the tobacco however a lot of pipe smokers use filters of one reason or another. Your problems with the Mixture biting you depends on a lot of things. Your personal body chemistry, your pace of which you are smoking etc. My suggestion would be that you try to slow down the pace as much as you can, because the higher temperature in the chamber the more acid the Virginia tobaccos will release. And it is the acid that bite your tongue. I hope you find your way of enjoying Mixture. And ... just for the record I smoke without filter. 😊

      The resistance in a pipe should be a little like when you drink from a straw. Try to breathe through your pipe without tobacco. Then fill the pipe, breathe through it, press/tamp the tobacco, and when you feel a little difference in the airflow, you can light it. If you fail, press/tamp a little more to get the tobacco compressed, and lite again. It might take a few times before you get the right resistance. Good luck :)
