I haven't smelled a pipe in ages! My great-grandfather smoked a pipe and I vividly recall the wonderful smell and sound of him puffing at the pipe when I was a little girl. I would sit at his feet and watch with interest. An old coal miner from Wyoming who worked too hard for way too little, he didn't say much to us kids, but simply smiled and puffed away. Truly, it's a practice I wish was more prevalent here in the U.S. - we all could use a bit of slowing down to sit, puff, think, and read.

Back in 2022, my dad (stepdad) passed away of a tragic heart attack. In the nearly two years since his passing, I’ve found myself in much the same feeling as the hobbit towards his departed king. I’ve faced great challenge when approaching the music him and I loved and the movies we relished in. In particular, we loved the song Hotel California. It took the first year until I was able to even hear some of the notes and not break down in tears.
Hearing the words of Aragorn say “Smoke then, and think of him” has been very powerful for me in my grief journey. Now I listen to the songs and watch the movies and think of him. Though tears may join me while I watch and listen, I know they are the outpouring of those thoughts of my dad.

One of my favorite passages in the trilogy, thank you! Being inspired by your videos to give poetry another go, I went to the library and borrowed books of Donne and Keats. I'm still struggling with Keats, but Donne is making some sense. Nearby on the shelf was Tolkien's The Fall of Arthur. This I really enjoyed! It is unfinished, so it abruptly ends just as it gets going (like Steinbeck). But unlike Steinbeck, who had dug himself into a hole, Tolkien was warmed up and in full gear. I would love to hear you read this poem, or other Old English alliterative meter.

Amo profundamente la obra de Tolkien. Todo cuanto tenga que ver con la vieja Inglaterra. Me encanta su biblioteca.

I also own a version of the 2015 James Fox 135th anniversary, shape 106. It has a similar stem and silver band, but the bowl is green. Really good smoker.

Yes, good morning! That stem and band are lovely. I will keep my eyes out for that book. I see that it is on various tobacco websites

I so agree with this. I would love for him to do a chapter and then really go into it and break it down.

Love hearing you discuss Peterson and Tolkien. I discovered the Peterson 605 pot and it’s become my favorite pipe/shape. Cheers from Tennessee!

Smoke and think, even on the hard things, as they too shall pass eventually with thought and meditation. Never gone, but pass into memories and the sting will float away. Always have to stay rooted in the simple pleasures…… have a great evening sir.

Man you help out so many people in these unfortunate times we’re having. It’s crazy over here in the US. The division of this country is so crazy, it’s hard to pick a side because it’s just cringy being a part of either party. Times are crazy and they’re only regressing. I’ll definitely be looking forward to some new posts.

Malcolm, only a few days ago I found your videos as I was suffering through the stomach flu. A horrible thing I wouldn’t wish on anyone, honestly. Since then I’ve watched at least 10 of your videos, subscribed, and liked every single one of them. It’s a nostalgic feeling for a video to start and to be welcomed into the host’s study for a conversation. I’d like to thank you for rekindling my love for Tolkien, a love for me that started only a handful of years ago during my college years. I will think of you during my first ever reread!
