In Brazil there are even plenty of non black people who practice the Candomblé religion. You can find candomblé centers in some very rich parts of Rio. I know one in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood, where artists from the Globo TV network go to.

It's amazing how Afro Brazilians connect with African struggles against the same european oppressor .I get chills when i see images of Steve Biko the slain leader of the black consciousness movement of the 1970s in South Africa.

Very interesting and eye-opening. Ive always wanted to visit Brazil. It just seems like and beautiful and vibrant country. Never knew about Salvador..It seems like Afro-brazilians have really tried to preserve their culture. That is very commendable given the racial opposition and challenges.
Most of Brazilian people mixed with African race. However, like South Africa where the goal was to prevent the Afro-mixed people from coming together with the Afro-Brazilians, the Colonial powers told the Afro-mixed people that they were than the Afro people. Then the Colonizers villainized the enslaved people.
Happy to see they have Steve Bantu Biko Institute in Brazil 🇧🇷. The late Steve Bantu Biko is an inspiration and was a great revolutionary Pan Africanist. "Pamoja milele."
Is there anything that can be done to twin this city with African cities. The Afro Brazilians sound amazing. There must be a way to open them to visit Africa and experience the their roots, it will give them a new stamina to navigate their destiny.
you think africans are the same no, congo have own culture, Angola and central africa (is where most brazil influence come). Ghana or Kenya we brazil have no relation with. Nor in Somalia... We are all different people. And brazil is mixed because we are one nation, just like sudan. Mixed mostly, then theres lot of white and theres are black peopoe. This is brazil.
Surely all black or Afrikan people must unite. Every year we should hold a Pan African congress that should be accompanied by Afrikan art, music and craft fest. "Pamoja milele!"
That's a very brilliant idea. Hope they can start something like that and it can always take place in a different part of Africa or the African diaspora
This is like your 3rd video of Brazil that I'm watching and I like how you show the more inner-city, vibrant, high rises and everyday experiences of Brazilians and other non-Beazilians in the country. It's a very unique Afro-centric perspective as opposed to most of the videos of Brazil posted by Americans, Canadians or Europeans who always focus on the favelas, crime and poverty to the point where I thought that was all Brazil had to offer. As far as I know, it is said that Salvador is the city with the most Afro-descendants outside Africa, not the blackest. "Blackest" suggest it's ranking according to skin color, which Salvador probably doesn't qualify, since most are mixed and have an intermediary skin tone.

Wode Maya when you come to the U.S.. or any other country outside of Africa get some music, books, pictures etc of African Americans, and all people from the diaspora this way you can understand their history and what we and our forefathers have been through and have overcome and are still overcoming. And most especially what we as a people have accomplished in spite of our names, culture, tribes and basically everything striped away in order to enslave us body, minds and but for the GRACE OF ALMIGHTY GOD our souls.
I’m back to watch our beautiful brother and sister from Brazil i’m not gonna lie. I did not know that Brazil has so much deep Black history.thank you Wode Maya more Blessings 🇨🇦🇯🇲❤
The Brazilian government tried to wipe out the African gene by importing Europeans. it was called "Blanqueamiento" between 1889 and 1914. It backfired on them because the African gene is dominant while other groups are recessive.
Not everyone. There are people who arent of mixed descent, but the majority of the country is. There are a lot of historical context to why it is the way it is, but basically we had centuries of whitening policy which consisted in encouraging race mixing throughout all the social classes. 44.2% of brazilians are of mixed race descent (they are called Pardos).
That's right. European blood being mostly Portuguese and Spanish mixed in with the African and local indigenous genetics. Even the whitest Brazilians probably have a little non-White blood at this point. Unless they're a transplant from Europe or of pure European descent.
Not really. The demographics of Brazil is quite similar to the US. With the only difference here being that the mixed race population make up the vast majority of the population within Brazil.
I LIKE TO LEARN AFRICAN COUNTRIES WHICH WERE COLD WAR. I LIKE WORLD HISTORY. BUT WELCOMY IN MY COUNTRY KYRGYZ REPUBLIC ALSO. WODE MAYA I SAY TO YOU. I M BIG FAN OF YOU.
1:30 Not really. There are black people in brazil, but many more of them are unlike us because of the mixing. Trying to force a connection with brazilians that are mostly mixed isn't going to have any positive gain for africans or ghanaians. We need to reinforce our black image, not a black image mixed with white. There's also heavy anti-blackness in the society, even amongst brazilians that are a majority black.

You shouldn’t say all Caribbeans, should say all Afro-Caribbeans because there’s other races in the Caribbean too such as Indians, Chinese, Arabs, Amerindians and European.
Thank you, my only brother! I;m an African-Brazilian from Sao Paulo state living in the US for many yrs & I visited Salvador once. I'm more familiar with Southern Bahia, particularly Porto Seguro, where the Portuguese "discovered" Terra Brasilis. It's gr8 to see Salvador/Pelourinho through African eyes. I worked with a girl from Ghana at Rockefeller Center, NY & it was funny to hear her saying "Africa is not a country!" So, Africans also strive to show you're not as homogeneous as people may think, having different ethnicities & traditions. The same happens in Brazil in regards to the "negritude" & brasileiros in general. Axe'!
I thought you said that Afro-Brazillians looked like you. They don't. At some point, Africans need to realize that Africans were the ORIGINAL people who were put on ships. Not their descendants. Once racial mixing happened, they ceased to be African. They are a NEW RACE that now belongs in the Americas and has partial ancestry in Africa. But they are NOT African. I would consider Haitians to be ethnically African because they almost have no racial mixing.
@@tysonomondi4174 I am East African. And I stand on my word. Maybe you are the one who needs to come here. In Africa, we know who is native and who is not. And East Africa has the most diverse phenotypes of NATIVE Africans. Not mixed race. North and South have a lot of mixed-race populations. Those are the results of invasions. "Colourds" as they call themselves hate to be called Africans. Africans don't claim them.
@@michelejones4351 Well, I guess that original bloodline got bred out in some of those people. You can't look phenotypically white and come to claim to be African. And at the same time seek to take a prominent position to represent the original race as you look down on the originals. Seriously! You are a new people now. Own that. There's nothing wrong with being your own people. You lost the original culture and look. Your lived experiences are not the same as those of local Africans on the continent.
One of the things that defines Latin America is that a good percentage of people is mixed race, there is not a particular look, you find race mixing of all kinds, in my family we have relatives with white, arab, indigenous, asian and black mixes in different percentages. Thanks so much Nephew I enjoyed this series of our Afro-Brazillian family keep up the great work 😊.
Henry Gates did a whole documentary on this topic. You have to check it out.
Wode Maya is always educating me about my African-Ness.
Wow, beautiful vlog Wode very very nice. Please keep coming out with more vlogs!!
Now i understand this "mixed race" in Brazil and this kind of shape my perception of Brazil as a blackman because this question has been lingering my mind for a very longtime but i have never taken the time and effort to find out why. Thanks @ Wode❤ !
I don't see the difference they look like the average Black American.
Superb series Wode; I enjoyed seeing our Brazilian brethren; they are strong-spirited et lovely! 💕💕💗💗🙏🏽🙏🏽
Happy to see you in my place and with my friends in Salvador - Bahia. Congrats for the wonderful videos. Africa For ever.
My next place to visite will be brazil, the country of pelé my favorite soccer player of all time
In burundi this dance is agasimbo dance 🇧🇮🇧🇮🇧🇮🇧🇮🇧🇮🇧🇮🇧🇮🇧🇮
Great video Wode Maya!! I want to visit this place now. I see the language barrier being an issue for me. 🤔
Wode -there is lots of love to go around. Culture over skin color. What a novel concept. Glad you can travel to see what exists over 100 years. I am mixed race elder from the West Indies. You should visit Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 to experience cultural mix.
Too much mix race will diminish the black race & bring conflicts
Wode I agree that black people need to be proud of their heritage. Afro Brazilian ladies are very attractive and beautiful ladies in Salvador Brazil 🇧🇷. I must give the ladies respect. Kali the guide is a very beautiful lady with long curly hair 👩🦱.
Sir Wode Maya nuff respect to you 👏🏽👏🏽,your Brazilian series is very mind blowing 🙏🙏🙏🤝❤❤
I’m glad

Hmmm that's deep...our ancestors left Africa but the AFRICA in them never left
I was under the impression everyone in Brazil was of mixed descent (African, European and Native) from the blackest areas to the whitest, right?
The Brazilian government tried to wipe out the African gene by importing Europeans. it was called "Blanqueamiento" between 1889 and 1914.
It backfired on them because the African gene is dominant while other groups are recessive.
nope, there is white + white in the south
Thank you DJ Sankofa and Darkito for helping Wode Garvey Maya
Salvador is now on my bucket-list after watching this video.
Brazil is not majority black, maybe only in the city of Salvador. I live in the south of Brazil
Thanks Maya - for showing Salvadore - bn a very long time I have heard and longing to see Salvadore - I just like what I see - black ppl everywhere - gryt energy and gryt vibes - Keep shinning the light of Africa Maya - we luv u so much...🐦🦆🦅🐞🐝

Read The Bible Book Joel 3:19-21. The Tribe Of Judah Was Scattered To All Four Corners Of The Earth. TMH YAH Will Cleanse Our Blood.
Have you ever been to africa if not travel to eastern side or south you will see same people looking exactly like them.
@@tysonomondi4174exactly
I have so much respect for the work that you do. I really feel like you're helping to unite the African diaspora.
One of the things that defines Latin America is that a good percentage of people is mixed race, there is not a particular look, you find race mixing of all kinds, in my family we have relatives with white, arab, indigenous, asian and black mixes in different percentages. Dance and food are also a blend of different cultures in Latin America.
Thank you so much for this one. Keep up the good work 👍🏾

Please help, we are set to go on 01/Jan., 2024 for his birthday which is Jan. 2nd 😳 and reason we got tickets is the website said you needed them and hotel reservation first, and the usua requested items before you apply for Visa. I'm from US so from what i see on website i don't need Visa, but my Ghananian husband does.! I can't wait to see these other countries in Africa and other mostly black countries stop treating Africans bad and making it so hard for Africans to travel!

WODE MAYA WELCOME TO THE CARIBBEAN ❤WHEN ARE YOU IN JAMAICA AND ST.KITTS ?.❤❤❤
I had no idea capoeira originated from African-brazilians, now it makes sense why Eddie was a black guy on the game. Great video my friend, informative and insightful. I respect that they still celebrate their African roots, I'm from an island in the Caribbean and we sadly don't have anything close to our African culture anymore, maybe only certain foods we cook similar.
The whitening of the races was no secret. It also happened in Argentina although their methods were a lot more radical.
