I'm glad I came across this, and I recognized it right away from your book which I had recently purchased! I love this painting (and your book!). I'm am stumped, however, by the color of the door in the book which appears more purple-blue. I've been experimenting for an hour and can't seem to capture that color which I absolutely love.. Any suggestions for how to obtain the door color in the book? Thanks so much. I love your humor with the shirt and saying it began all white - that's hysterical. You are a great teacher. Someday I must narrow down my palette. I am addicted to so many colors that it's out of control. Your video awhile back stressing how your teacher suggested doing that still plays through my head. I share that tip with my beginner students - and tell them I'm too far gone -ha!
Hi Patty, many thanks. Sometimes the print on the book can change the colour slightly from the one on the video. If you want a slightly more warm blue, go for a French Ultramarine.

Thank You for posting this video and the others. I have been doing small tutorials because I am afraid to take on a bigger project. With this one I used a full size paper instead cutting it smaller and I'll am pleased at how it turned out. I know to most this is a small project, but to me it is a big step doing any work on a full sheet of paper. Thank You again for giving me the courage to give it a try

Hi Paul, I’ve just been enjoying your tutorials, can I ask a question about your paints. I notice you use tubes, what happens to the paint in your mixing palate once you’ve finished a painting. My gray did not turn out as transparent as yours, I am wondering why? I used winsor newton cotman cad yellow, cobalt blue and alizarin crimson. Did you use a warmer cad yellow? All all these 3 primary colors cool? Or did you use a warmer cad yellow? Thank you.

I LOVE the blue door!! You make it look so effortless even though it is not. Your personality and sense of humor always puts a smile on my face and makes trying to learn something new more fun. But, I have a question. do you have to seal your paintings with anything especially since you use pastels on them? And do you stretch you paper before you use it? I've been seeing a lot of videos on stretching techniques to prevent the paper from buckling when you are painting and it all seems a little confusing ...
Thanks again Shirley! - I don't seal my paintings - If I really like one it goes in a glass frame so it's protected or in my plans chest between a sheet of lining paper. I do sometimes stretch my paper if it's one that is going to need a lot of washes but more often than not I use thick watercolour paper - have you seen my video on paper, it may help. see link: ruclips.net/video/TiVpc7O-umM/видео.html
Paul I would like to see a Misty mount painted by you. Not a Western Range pf mountains in mist, but mountains like those we see in North India Blue mountains with under light mist, yet see the blue of the mountain and with very very thin white misty clouds floating in front of it. Do you get it I am sure You have seen them.
Paul, i have some questions regarding mixing of paints. In your videos and in your book you refer to mixing paints in percentages. 40% water 60% paint or 50% blue & 50% red etc. how much paint do you start with from the tube and how do you estimate the percentages? Having a challenge with this part. Thanks,
Hi Larry - it's always difficult to explain as it's not a scientific thing, more just trial and error. What I was trying to get across is when you are mixing your tube paint and water together to make a wash always add more water than paint - thus the 60% water, 40% paint ratio. It's never exact as you will add more water to get a lighter value wash. It's just that I find beginners tend to not use enough water - and you need the water for the magic happen!!! The colour percentages is a different thing - that are just the amount of each colour you need to mix together to make another - hope this helps!

I was shocked when I saw the last painting you show us in this video. 😮 (The one with the violet ivy all over) I had framed it as a photo and hung in my living room a few years back. I've seen it on an office calendar's page and cut it out. Now I wonder had you actually took the photo too or just painted it. Beautiful paintings all of them. I live in Turkey by the way.
So cool! - It's quite a well known picture and I've seen various versions of it and too be honest I'm not even sure where the original reference was from as it was painted a few years ago. Glad you like it!
love this. but here is the magic question, and pardon my ignorance here, but how does one transfer the printout to watercolor paper? I traced it on parchment paper (I know, 'cringe' but all I had at the moment} but how does one transfer ???
Yes - transfer onto the watercolour paper - easiest way is just scribble on the back of the print with a soft pencil and then press through with a ballpoint pen.
One more question regarding your work station. I have a bid standing easel. I’d assume that would not be the best for watercolor. Would you show us your station. Thank you

Received Watercolor Plus yesterday. This is a fabulous book; I've been using the soft pastels sticks and pencils but this morning ordered a set of 48 Mungyo Oil Pastels. The whole resist thing with oil pastels intrigued me; a must try! Also ordered your book, by the way.

I attempted to paint this with your instructions...and Aaaha, I couldn't believe I could paint so well....All credit is yours, thanks a ton!! Few more valuable lessons I got..., about mixing colors and right sequence of using colors...I would have painted the red flowers last... had I not followed the instructions...!! I am eager to do the next :-) wish I could share my version with you...

Received Watercolor Plus yesterday. This is a fabulous book; I've been using the soft pastels sticks and pencils but this morning ordered a set of 48 Mungyo Oil Pastels. The whole resist thing with oil pastels intrigued me; a must try! Also ordered your book, by the way.

PS: how do you like/compare, the Brockford? (sp?) 200 lb paper... to the Arches 140 lb, both cold press?
Very Different but love them both - Bockingford lifts out better but Arches is just .... Fab!
Had fun doing this!!! Perspective is challenging for me. I'm not an artist but have fun with watercolor and keep learning about perspective by doing and watching.
