  • Making Fiends tells the sad tale of another Nickelodeon show being trapped within the Nicktoons channel curse. But this time, the story behind Making Fiends, it's origins and what ended up happening to it is sadly a more tragic tale than any other cartoon on the the Nicktoons Network.

      After hearing this sad story, I was afraid the same thing would happen to C.H. Greenblatt when Harvey Beaks got greenlit and became a series. Sadly, my fears were proven right when his show got horribly mistreated once season 2 happened.

    • @Stormer13
      @Stormer13 2 года назад +9

      We should keep in mind the time period this came out when considering what happened and how creators were shafted in the end. While the internet was growing, getting recognized by a channel like Nickelodeon was a really big deal. The only better outcome at that time would have been someone like Cartoon Network or Disney picking it up. That's because (at least I believe) back then, independent creators didn't have fantastic ways to get word out about their work. Nowadays, there's a hundred and one streaming platforms plus the rise of popularity in crowd-funding sites that would have allowed something like Making Fiends to exist today in a way it couldn't back then.
      If anything, I think it would be great if the creators of shows like this could try to get the rights to their properties back and then let the creator decide where to go. Maybe the show will be extended thanks to viewer support and crowd funding. Maybe it'll die. Either way, at least the creator can know its true fate rather than having it waste away in some vault

      They should at least give her back the rights to it. When you create something and agree to share it, to have it shelved and then be told you cannot do anything further with a product of your own creativity is just cruel. In a perfect world, they'd just be like "Hey, we decided not to use this. Go ahead and continue to distribute it the way you want", but unfortunately, people just aren't that neighborly. There's been other examples of this with different cartoons as well that frustrated me to no end, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

      Which, to me, seems funny in a stupid way. Most big recognizable names in pop culture required a leap of faith in order to get popular. In the 70s people already had campy sci-fi shows like Buck Rogers or the Jetsons dictating the genre for movies and TV, and the original Star Wars was a low-budget risk that has payed off significantly. I can’t imagine a world without Spongebob, but was also a risk considering how unique it is as a concept (ie undersea animals as opposed to more typical cat or dog MCs) And later on, during the dawn of the MCU, most superhero movies weren’t well received. While movies like the Superman series or Blade were enjoyed by fans, those movies didn’t grip outsiders like how the first Iron Man did making it, yet again, another risk.

    @acmeanvil3022 2 года назад +407

    That comment Amy made about giving NEW shows a chance, I feel that's been something both the network and viewer base should learn to do. I've seen so many great Nicktoons ignored and tossed aside in favour of talking more about the older stuff. Nostalgia is a nice thing in small doses, but I feel that too much of it can halt progress. Nickelodeon and Hollywood at large is stuck living in the past, and mainstream consumers only seem to be enabling that problem. I don't think I saw anyone talk about It's Pony until it was dumped on Nicktoons network to which then people tried to stand on a soapbox saying how horrible the company is for doing such a thing, when they themselves did nothing to support it beforehand!
    Shows like Glitch Techs and Harvey Beaks are just as important and worthy of praise as the classics like Rocko's Modern Life Hey Arnold!, and I long to one day see a world where every Nicktoon is seen on equal footing with another. To not be propped up on a higher or lower pedestal based on what era they came out or how well known or obscure they are. If we want to see more original shows and ideas thrive not just from Nick, but from any company, then we must be willing to put our best foot forward to support these underdogs.

    • @njrk97
      @njrk97 2 года назад +17

      Its a uphill battle even with support, apart from the fact most people watching these vids are probably not the kids they are marketing towards, you have other issues, IE countries not America almost never actually airing the new episode around the same time as America and having alot less advertising about when they will air them. Combined them with at least with Nick the stupid high standards IE not sure if its the case anymore but before they wouldn't even give a show a proper chance unless it hit spongebob numbers on its first airing. Plus then other situations IE just deciding the merch sales are not practical, the show is too expensive, it accidentally got a older audience into it. I mean look at Owl House, the creator literally went on record explain the situation with her show, the rating were great, the show was popular, it had momentum, but its being kicked after a 3 longer episode 3rd season simply because one day one person up top decided the show did not fit their 'brand' because it was vaguely serialized.
      Nick in general though really seems to have some crazy attachment issues with how much they define themselves around basically being the Spongebob channel and being deadly afraid to release anything that wont directly measure up to it, as if every show they make needs to be as milkable as Spongebob otherwise its not worth it, while also at the same time being super two faced and pretending they 'care' about the old cartoons and not just cause they can squeeze the nostalgia for cash now and pretend they supported them all along.

    • @inendlesspain4724
      @inendlesspain4724 2 года назад +4

      Well, I didn't even know those shows existed before people started talking about them when they got cancelled, and unfortunately where I live only shows that have already proven themselves in the US are released here, so even if I did know I probably wouldn't have been able to support them. It's pretty much up to the american audience whether these shows live or die.

      They don't even rely on their entire retro catalog. I watch their Nick Rewind block a lot, and it's literally the same shows every night: Rugrats, Doug, Hey Arnold, and Rocko's Modern Life. Then on weekends, they just pick one show and do a weekend long marathon. I would kill for more variety. Like a different lineup each week. Give more love to the mid-2000's era shows, and even the early 2010's are kinda retro now. I feel like a huge part of the problem would be solved if they rebranded Nicktoons as a full Nick Rewind channel with all of their retro catalog from 90's, 2000's, 2010's, and give love to obscure shows, with a consistent schedule based on the different eras, while new shows stay on the main channel and aren't dumped to die on a side channel.

    It's sad that the show had that fate, I remember watching the cartoon around 2008 in reruns with my older sister alongside the three delivery and the secret show. It had a interesting atmosphere, not as grim as Invader Zim, but not too cheerful like other toons at the time. Yet, I liked it's atmosphere and episodic problems brought about by Vendetta trying to end Charlotte, but backfiring. Sad that it was short lived like the other toons of Nicktoon Network.

    Tonally, I always thought the show was more Cartoon Network than Nickelodeon. I really liked it though, especially the amazing voices, which we didn't get to hear here―they take a rather typical cartoon plot concept and elevate it into something genuinely weird and vaguely sinister. It's sort of classic animation that way: It takes a simple, familiar idea and makes it resonate in a fun, unique way

    I remember being at my grandparents house, who's tv package included channels like nicktoons, and turning this on one day, I instantly loved the art style, and it didn't take more than one episode to get me to the whole show. I remember loving the goofy yet weird, almost creepy vibe the show had, but I also remember being confused as to why the show never aired on regular Nickelodeon, since it seemed to be a new show at the time, and Nick usually airs the first couple of episodes of their new shows on the main channel before dumping it on Nicktoons. Years later of course I discovered the reason why, and was bummed out that not only was this cartoon nuked at 6 episodes, but the creator just would not be to do anything further with it. It really sucks when networks won't do anything with failed pilots and cut-short shows, but then will hoard the copyright from it's creators. Though, it is cool to see this cartoon get more love and appreciation in recent years!

    I watched Making Fiends on Nicktoons in about 2012, and it was the first time I'd ever seen the show before or even heard of it (along with Invader Zim). I didn't rush to watch it when it was coming on like with my other favorite shows, but I did sit and watch when it was on in the morning. That's so cruel that the creator can't even do anything else with it because she accidentally signed her soul to the devil and then the devil decided to lock it away forever. The fact that Nicktoons even has the "final resting place of Nick cartoons" title should tell them they need to get their act together.

    Something truly special that ends quickly can have a legacy far more powerful than something popular that goes on forever. I’m never in support of milking but I am in support of telling as many good stories in a world as you can before ending it. Sometimes the creator and audience disagree on whether there are more stories to tell or the creator simply prefers to end it in a place the audience doesn’t like, sometimes it’s worth taking a chance on a new voice to come in and work on something that seemed done, but as a whole people tend to agree that something special should remain so regardless of how much they want more. A passionate fan base is something that should be grown, not discarded, regardless of what the numbers say in that moment.

    I remember only seeing the show on nicktoons when I was a kid, and I remember loving how dark but cute the artstyle is! Growing up knowing what happened to this show was a reality check for me to never make a show for a network because once you do, they can do whatever they want to it. It sucks this happens, I can already imagine shows like fairly odd parents, Dexter's laboratory or even Ed ed n eddy getting reboots in the future because these networks owns the rights to these shows and never just rely on only new things. I found this show early this year because the characters and theme song were featured in a video my friend showed me and I decided to check the show out for myself. I instantly fell in love! It's so creative, and exactly up my ally of what I love in a show. I feel like I would've loved it as a kid just as much as I do now. It's one of my favorites.
