  • El Tigre is next on the list in our "The Fault in our Nicktoons" series and technically the "WAIT... Remember?" series. A 2 in one special, only for you! El Tigre, while having something special, never fully hooked me when it first came out and thanks to Nicktoons, didn't have that long of a shlef life. By the same creators behind The Book of Life and Maya and the Three, today we dive in and take a look at El Tigre!

El Tigre was the first kids show I remember watching that really nailed the idea of moral struggle.
Manny was from a rough city, surrounded by bad influences. Manny wanted to be a hero, wanted to do good, but he also was realistically tempted by evil.
What is tempting about evil to a kid? Getting what you want, doing things the easy way, the cathartic joy of destruction, avoiding responsibility. Every kid could relate to that.
Seeing a character, a kid, who did bad things, but wasn't portrayed as being just a bad kid, was really important. Manny was the hero for the troubled kids, and made them believe they could choose to be good, even if it was hard.

    • @JavierGomezX
      @JavierGomezX 2 года назад +57

@@mikelove8720 I couldn't agree more. One particular episode is stuck permanently in my brain. Manny is part of a football team (yeah, I am calling it football like everybody in Latin America, not soccer) that always loses, so he asks his dad about the possibility of cheating, hypothetically speaking of course. His dad tells him about this occasion where he was also part of a football team and was pressured to cheat in order to win a very important match. He refused and after losing he was chased out of town by an angry mob throwing rocks at him, for "shaming" the city league with his loss. At the end of the story, Manny tried to figure out the lesson, and his interpretation was, and I quote: "So if you cheat you win, but if you don't cheat people throw rocks at you?!". And his dad answers him with a hand on his chest, the posture of a champion and pride on his face: "Rocks of Honor!!!".
I have never, ever forgotten that joke. It always makes me smile and I think about it every time I think about the reasons I should do the right thing. Not because I might get a reward, but because living with integrity is a source of personal fulfillment and pride that can't be rivaled by the momentary pleasure of winning. Not to mention it just ruins the game because Manny ended up cheating and in time his matches devolved into a fiasco contest, not football at all. He risked disappointing the people that really loved him, to not disappoint the mindless masses that would turn on him the moment he failed (and fail he did, but not to his father)
      Man... what a good show

@@JavierGomezX bro this is exactly what I'm talking about that was beautiful! El Tigre came out at a time when most cartoons still had positive messages, but the way this show tells them is really one of a kind! And so real, like a lot of folks manny doesn't usually get the conviction to do what's right instead of what's easy until he gets burned in trial by fire. After going through it, he really understands most of Rodalpho's mesages, but like a lot of US, especially as defiant adolescents, he has to learn the hard way. But he DOES learn, and that is the biggest takeaway

@@lordhighfixer4560 Kinda does, if he had just said El Tigre was special because of the main character's skin color then it wouldn't really matter as people are far more than their outward appearance, but culture is something special and can be a big part of someone's identity, my father was from Mexico and my mom was first generation in America from Ireland, growing up I always loved seeing the two cultures in the media I consumed because it was stuff that I could easily relate to that isn't really a big thing in America such as Dia De Las Muertos, or watching a pantomime on St. Stephen's Day with my whole family, racial representation isn't actually important as people can empathize with others who don't look like them, while cultural representation is important as it's a look at history and the personal values present in families from those cultures, one is just outward appearance while the other is how people live.

The creator has a canon future for El Tigre.
It's been revealed by the creator that Manny and Frida are still friends up to the point of where they both attended high school. It's been explained that if Season three were to be made, Frida would be given Maria's glove and become a superhero but she only uses it on occasion due to the whole "she can only wear the glove and use its power for 1 hour, and if she doesn't, then the glove will take over her mind and she'll become insane and obsessed with violence" thing.
In high school, both Frida and Manny only just hung out with each other due to them dating other people. Manny began dating Zoe Aves at this point, though it’s unknown what Frida's reaction is to this relationship. Fans realized that it was anger and jealousy due to both girls being enemies. Frida dated more people than Manny, since she dated Sergio first, followed by Dr. Chipotle Jr., and for some reason after that Django of the Dead, but broke up with them in unknown periods of time. After graduating, Frida remains to pursue her career of being a rockstar with her band since the old days. For some reason after this, she met up with Manny once again and under unknown circumstances got married to each other. Also said by Jorge that Manny and Frida would have triplets; one a hero, one a villain and one hasn’t decided yet if he wants to be a hero or a villian.

The art style was ICONIC and every other flash animation on Nick looked ugly next to this. Absolutely love the premise and how family issues between the two patriarchs in Manny's life come about because they are both superhero and supervillain. It's such a smart way to build a family dynamic. Plus, character designs were always memorable and have been stuck in my head forever.

Man. It really bums me out when a show like this, with actual heart and originality, is scrapped for the same basic formulaic junk we've seen a thousand times. El Tigre had interesting character design, animation style, setting, and concept, and yet it's basically been relegated to blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameos in Nickelodeon media, and just pop culture in general. I really wish this show had been given a fair shot, as it feels like the cards were stacked against it from the get-go with its early time slot, unique layout, and lack of advertisement. It's a real shame, because I feel like there was a lot of untapped content here that could've lasted the show a long time.

this show was pretty good, i liked the idea that Manny descended both from heroes and villains and the naming theme of himself, his father and his grandfather being cats was clever. Manny himself was also a good character, he was bit of trouble maker but was still likeable. the setting was unique, i think this was one of the very few shows that had a Hispanic lead and was set in a another country. Freida and Manny relationship, while maybe a bit...standard (main boy and girl becoming a couple) was pretty adorable.
I'm nor sure why this didn't succeeded, I liked it enough and would watch it pretty regularly, and while it was never my favorite, I still found it funny and actions packed.

Heck, the show defined me as a person.

    I never forgot.
It was one of the few shows where we were one of the leads and not just the comedy sidekick or a random "spicy" love interest.
And it never felt forced or deliberate to me. It was just so STEEPED in everything that it felt like there was genuine love.
They actually did make two endings to the finale episode, and you can find the alternate online some places.
Though I sincerely doubt (even back then) they'd ever let Manny end as an outright villain.
(That ending has him and Frida take over the city and build a rollercoaster.)
The only complaints I have is that in the second half of the series, it repeats itself a lot.

This show will always be one of my favorite nickelodeon shows, it left such a big impression on me when growing up. I remember the excitement and the emotions I felt watching the last episode. At that point of my life I had never seen a character falling under the anti hero trope and it was truly amazing and groundbreaking watching something like it for the first time, especially considering I was just a chind. It really sparked something in me and to this day anti hero stories are still one of my favorite tropes, simple yet powerful. Don't get me started on how it opened my eyes to how different and beautiful different cultures are, as a Greek kid I had no way to appreciate Mexican traditions yet El tigre made me feel one with the culture it represented

Funnily enough, this show got imprinted into my brain thanks to the fact that around the time it was on air I discovered and was playing a videogame called Fable that tackles the same "who I want to be" dilemma. I liked the concept so much that I immediately got hooked. It's sad what happened to it.

Well, the good news is that Nick has been starting to acknowledge the show more lately, as the show had a marathon aired on TeenNick's NickRewind block earlier this year, and they've also been occasionally acknowledging the show in social media posts.

I remember El Tigre very well. Ironically, I remember a majority of the shows that you do your videos of. Not each & every episode because I didn’t have continuous cable, & had to go to others homes in order to watch them, but I remember watching. I guess my childhood was my peak of life…

El Tigre always stuck in my mind. It was my favorite show on Nicktoons at the time.

I was a freshman in college when I found out my dorm had access to nickelodeon and when I woke up at 4 am to find them playing El Tigre, I made it a habit to wake up at that time and do my art assignments while watching the show. I have never been so dedicated to a show back then when cable was still the only way to watch things but El Tigre will always have a place in my heart. I hope it resurges in popularity! It's a super fun show!

This show was my intro to Eric Bauza, and it was probably some of his first major original characters

El Tigre was one of my favourite cartoons, the dilemma between being good and evil was quite refreshing to see
