I was an artist on a Moshi Monsters fan revival project, so I got a glimpse of the back end. The entire game is held together by duct tape. There's bugs that never got fixed because the team was seemingly too focused on adding new products to make merchandise of. The amount of merch is absolutely insane, you can hunt down toys of characters and moshlings not even added to the game because they pretty much gave up. It's a shame too, the game had a lot of potential that never got built upon due to the sheer amount of content added to sell toysets.

I think over saturation is something that might even be worse than micro transactions (well ofc it depends on how greedy a corporation is an how oversaturated they make a game/franchise, but in my experience, oversaturation ruined more for me.)
Oversaturation kills things. It makes characters feel obsolete and unimportant. They’ll be forgotten because of the sheer number of figures or playable characters or content that will be added. That’s why I love it when games announce ‘final’ updates. The game doesn’t die, not updating without players knowing if the devs will ever see it again. Instead it sends a message. That the game is complete. It doesn’t need anything more because it has everything already. Every character, mechanic, collectable, there won’t be any more. All of them are special

the saturation of moshi monster merchandise and toys was insane. I knew someone who was obsessed with Moshi Monsters, bought tons of the cheap crappy collectibles and all that. Now that the games dead and the community only sort of exists, im certain most of this merchandise is worth nothing and all in landfills nowadays. I remember that Guiness Book of World Records around then usually had sections on people who had large collections of things, and one was moshi monsters merchandise.

Your monster would have like happiness and well-being bars that would go down if you didn’t play for a few days and it made me feel really bad as a kid. I also remember I when we were canceling my membership there was a sad poppet on the screen saying like “You really want to cancel? 🥺😢” and I had to leave the room bc I was to upset to watch my mom cancel the subscription.

Fun fact: Mind Candy actually made an ARG game that had players buying card packs that contained puzzles that players had to solve. The main goal was to find a cube that was important to the fictional "Perplex city." The cube was found in 2007 and the person that found it won 120,000 thousand dollars.
You might have heard of Perplex City from one particular card called "Billion to One" that had a picture of a man, and the words "find me" in Japanese. If you're interested in this card I recommend watching Inside a Mind's videos on the card.

I remember going nuts when the Zoshlings missions came out. I was a member, I knew all the songs, I was obsessed with the lore, and I loved it. I loved it so much. My house was fully leveled up, stuffed with items. I had quite a few moshings, I beat all the missions with all of the EPICs, I even made my own dance to Moptop Tweenybop and did it in my school talent show. I cannot make this stuff up. moshi monsters was my first big experience with talking to other people online! i eventually got bored of the same repetitive daily tasks because i didn't have a membership, and somehow found my way to the forums. there in Roary's eyemagination station, or RES, I got my first taste of text based roleplay, which started developing my writing skills, which led to me developing my art skills to draw my ocs! At that point I was NOT there for the base game, I was there for the forums. They even called me one of the Legends back in the day (a term for people who made the most successful roleplays, and a term i REALLY did not deserve).
I couldn't have cared less what they were doing with the site... up until they installed a very harsh text censoring system and did a forum wipe that deleted two years of stories I'd created with my friends. At that point, I just straight up left.

I struggle to understand the slime trend, but the remembering the moshi monsters craze helps me understand the slime thing. It must of been weird for our parents. I didn't get too deep into it, for me it was all about the cards and figures also soon after the craze was over my parents sold my small collection.
Moshi monsters even got banned because too many kids were making trades and then getting really upset afterwards.
It's also kind of interesting that there wasn't as much of an issue with match attax cards even though there were several boys who were super into it. The football boys broke the stereotype and managed their trades better than the moshi monster section of the class. It did get banned but only a whole 3 years later (year 4 instead of year 1) when an argument culminated in someone trying to flush down another's cards down the toilet and causing a blockage.

I played as Poppet, favourite moshlings were Pooki and Mr Snoodle, had plushies, showbags, magazines, so so many magazines- and even got a membership for my 8th birthday which I was super excited for (and then we couldn’t afford internet for a year apparently so that was a complete waste but whatever-)
Andd I even dragged my nanna and brother to the cinemas to see the movie lmao. It was far from their kinda thing but they knew it was important to me so they stuck it through :)
