The N64 era is still alive! Easy to pick up consoles and games and nothing stopping us continue to enjoy N64. And why wouldn't we? A lot of the games are simply classic and hold up VERY well compared to today's cheap recycled knock-offs and cash-guzzling loot bags/DLC.

Accessibility has definitely gotten worse with respect to people with visual impairments and information comprehension problems.
Text in modern games is so tiny that sometimes I have to stand up and get close to my TV to read it, and text boxes often contain so much information that I literally can't retain it all. I miss the chunky text boxes of the N64 and GameCube era.

100% I fully get that, I can understand ‘just fine’ but if you give me SUBTITLES, please PLEASE let me have them!
Cos even if you switch off and didn’t catch what someone was saying in say a TV show, or THAT next line is about to play but it’s on screen in advance, it can give someone like myself a heads up ‘this is coming’
Even if it’s not a jump scare or a proper big thing. Just seeing words that are about to be said gives you a tiny bit of foresight and if your on the spectrum. (Wording might be delicate*)
Re-enforce what’s just been said. As emotions are some times really subtle, you may not pick up on it. Seeing a subtitle saying an emotion, can by some extent in the brief window.
      1. Comfort as you knew what was about to be said.
      2. You can hear the emotion in the words.
      3. I can’t remember what it was that had it, but I do remember seeing one TV show have subtitles that had [Emotion] to the side.
I presumed it was for those who were hard of hearing and struggled with understanding the visual emotions of characters.
I just wanna make a promise to everyone right here, right now. On the side I’m working on game development. Whilst I don’t have SOMETHING to show, I FULLY intend to make the accessibility options as fully featured as possible within every release. And if it isn’t at launch, I’d be making sure it gets an update.
IF ANYONE can’t play and enjoy the game, because… well anything from, it’s not in my language (though, that’s trickier than you might think) to, I don’t have those reflexes, I can’t read that text. I can’t use keyboard and mouse but I can use a controller.
I fully promise to anyone with autism or has anything that would ‘enhance’ the experience for them, I fully intend to make that a thing for you.
Just don’t expect me to pull a major as mask and give you the moon 😂

Wow.. I was literally going to write out this exact point. So glad to know that I'm not the only one frustrated by all the tiny screens, small text and miniature HUD's present in HD video games.

    • @stasisasmr7724
      @stasisasmr7724 3 года назад +2

@@Reshyrah oh yeah! That’s an exact thing I don’t think I mentioned, but that ability to turn it on and off in C&C was amazing, and what they had was just blocks to represent both the map and terrain, with blocks for units.
Granted you couldn’t tell what each unit was from that specifically, and StarCraft did a better job in terms of readability, where ‘large scale’ units appear bigger.
But just the simplicity of just looking at the radar and it’s enough so you know.
And I just remembered, Mario kart DS, you TOTALLY CAN* play using the bottom screen, which just has character pucks, showing briefly obstacles as like Xs or something,
So if you focused just on that screen it’s not quite the karting experience but it plays like one, I was actually annoyed when they took that out of 7, and then of course 8,

I'm not even on the spectrum and I find that shit annoying as hell. One of the worst offenders in this regard have always been Rockstar, putting tons of tiny text-boxes in the *upper left corner* of all places during tutorials, and if you don't read them fast enough, they disappear! All the while you're expected to keep playing and shooting/driving, or whatever it is you're doing at the moment. Hey, Rockstar, my two eyeballs don't function independently from one another, this shit doesn't work!!

Hi, Glenn! Long-time subscriber, first-time commenter here. First things first, thanks SO much for your superlative research and thoughtful recommendations: I’m sure that they’ll come in great use for the Asperger’s community. :) Even though I’ve never played on it: your choice of Pokemon Snap was particularly inspired: I wish that I had the opportunity to play that game as a teenager!
Before I start waffling, I was just want to clarify one thing: I don’t have Asperger’s, but I do have dyspraxia, to the extent that I literally can’t use smartphones because touchscreens are ultimately too fiddly for me. So, when I was aged five in 1992, my screening results were that signs of dyspraxia were VERY conclusive and a diagnosis of Asperger’s was more inconclusive (i.e. a borderline case, but as it was a different time and there wasn't quite enough evidence to be officially diagnosed, I’ll NEVER say I'm quasi-autistic etc).
But, seeing that I’m still officially on the neuro-diversity spectrum, I might be able to make other recommendations from a slightly different perspective, particularly with regards to hand-eye co-ordination. After all, the two disorders often have overlapping symptoms and it’s not uncommon for people with Asperger’s to be later diagnosed with dyspraxia (or vice-versa, of course!) where the symptoms of dyspraxia are chronic and lifelong (thus it's not always the case that those with Asperger's grow out of their lack of physical dexterity as they get older, alas, and it's not always limited to their childhood).
It surprised me so much that you chose Pilotwings 64! That game came with my second-hand console, along with Mario Kart 64 and Yoshi’s Story, when I was aged 11 and I REALLY struggled with it and the super intricate controls (it also didn’t help that it came without the instruction manual, haha). I hear your valid points on it and I know that it’s struck such a big chord with others in the comments section, but the learning curve is steep and it’s a game, presumably much like Mario Golf, where precision is king, so I’ve always found it to be an unforgiving game when there’s so little room for error or leeway.
Perhaps something like Blast Corps or even Virtual Pool 64 would fit the bill a little more for the casual and/or impatient gamer here? And, seeing that F1 World Grand Prix and Beetle Adventure Racing both have a time trial mode (thus making it more accessible to the less experienced gamer!), maybe they would also be suitable for those who want something that’s very detailed-focused?
On a more positive note, however, I do want to recommend Yoshi’s Story, particularly for younger and less accomplished gamers with Asperger’s and/or dyspraxia. The low difficulty and storybook design, for starters, has long had a calming influence on me when I feel overwhelmed with life, plus the treasure hunt-style gameplay and option to replay individual levels arguably make it very friendly to those who are on the neuro-diversity spectrum.
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon would be great for older gamers, too! I’ve always been fascinated by the attention to detail and references to Asian culture - I’m sure that I’m not alone! - so the level design alone makes it very Asperger-friendly to me. But I really feel that Konami really nailed the open world element of the game because, as someone who REALLY struggles with an open world that’s more complex than, say, A Dog’s Life or The Simpsons: Hit & Run, the open world on Mystical Ninja is condensed and slow-paced enough to not intimate or overwhelmed the gamer, while being interesting enough to encourage further exploration. It's a tricky thing to get right, but that even balance is perfectly struck, I reckon.
The robot battles are a tad intense and there’s the occasional difficulty spike, sure, but Mystical Ninja is one of the few action games that I have been able to complete. And this comes from someone who literally can’t get beyond 85 stars on Super Mario 64, Gobi’s Valley/Mad Monster Mansion on Banjo-Kazooie, the train level on GoldenEye 007 and Dodongo's Cavern on Ocarina Of Time! A classic case of a game not being too easy nor too hard.
I hear you on sport games, alas. I remember buying a second-hand copy of Mario Tennis as a university student and finding it too cumbersome. And, as much as I love FIFA ’99 and International Superstar Soccer 64, they are objectively WAY too fast for a gamer that struggles with hand-eye co-ordination. That being said, I do want to defend FIFA: Road To World Cup ’98 when, much like Mystical Ninja, it strikes exactly the right balance. After all, it’s not an out-and-out arcade title and it’s also not an overly intricate simulation either.
Maybe it’s just me, but the N64 version of FIFA ’98 feels like a very bespoke version when it seems to play at a MUCH gentler pace than the other console versions of it. Thus it’s one of the few games that I’ve been able to truly master at the highest difficulty level and the sheer amount of teams are an added bonus for any keen football fan.
Thanks again for another insightful and thoughtful video, Glenn! :)

To answer the question in the description, "So who's looking forward to the eventual N64 Mini Classic console and do you think any of these games will end up on it?" I'd say most likely not except for Pokémon Snap. My reasoning is that if we follow the trend of the NES and SNES Classic, then the N64 Classic will have 10 games (NES had 30, SNES had 20, you get the gist). Those 10 games have to be very carefully chosen. They can't be rated M because they'll want to sell this families (sorry Shadow Man) nor can be made by Rareware due to Rare being bought by Microsoft (sorry Banjo (DK64 might be an exception to this))-so that's a double no for Perfect Dark and Conker's BFD. They have to be varied as well (so can't put in all three Mario Partys) and encompass a variety of genres.
Being realistic, I'd say the N64 Classic line-up would look something like this:
    - Super Mario 64 (you gotta have it)
    - Mario Kart 64
    - LoZ: OOT or LoZ: MM (no room for both)
    - Mario Party 2 (it's the best of the three)
    - Paper Mario
    - Smash Bros.
    - Star Fox
    - Mario Tennis or Mario Golf (most likely Tennis)
    - Yoshi's Story or Kirby 64 The Crystal Shards
    - DK64 (this could be their one Rareware get) or Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness or Pokemon Snap
    Let me know your thoughts.

Hi! I am an Aspergers myself, living among people as a bit of an outcast, an outcast who ironically longs for companionship and understanding. Cinema and video games, as restrained as interest it might be, it's helped me more than I can say. I did play some of those mentionned games, though, Mario Golf was fine but didn't hook me, and Pilotwings 64, I do own but haven't found the time to explore it fully. Though I'm sure the unlockable Cannonball mini-game is a great fun time.
I didn't get attached to video games until Super Mario 64 and especially, especially Rayman 2. For some reaso nthis hooked me, its world, its characters, its challenges and enemies. The fascination for it drove up the wall. I was taken, invested, wanting to learn all. I could talk for hours about it. Maybe it reflects my own flaws/strengths, as Rayman is an incredibly weird, unusual leaving people to stay in their comfort zone, but those who love him really do love him. Could never figure out why since I can hardly tell people's emotions all the time.
Thank you for this great video, Glenn. I hope you're well and healthy really. Even for me, Aspergers is a hard subject to talk about, but you did it really well!! I may be the odd one out, but as someone with Aspergers/ASD, I tend to really enjoy games like GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, and Resident Evil 2. All three are methodical games with a clear end/completion state. They also have unlockables standing as a good incentive to come back and replay the games for more value. Pilotwings 64 is a good choice, but I also think Star Fox 64, Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, and Banjo are all great choices too. They might be cliche answers, but they have colorful graphics with easily recognizable characters, and they also have a lot of collectables that you can check off a list (or at least in Star Fox’s case, you can go for medals).

Mario golf ironically being one game that I found difficult to estimate the shots, and did easily flap at (as I call my meltdowns) but the music was extremely calming and the mini golf section was a section I found I could do better on.

I have Aspergers and perhaps surprisingly, my favourite N64 game is hands down Mario Party (especially 2).
In general I am not a huge fan of socialising, but that's more with strangers and when small talk is involved. Mario Party gives things to talk about when the conversation dries up, it has a slight strategic element and just leads to a lot of funny moments with friends. I know some people with ASD are really competitive, and for those types Mario Party may not be any good for them, but for me I really see it as a fun catylyst to have some fun with a small group of friends and make some unforgettable memories.

My son has autism and loves Pokémon snap on the N64. It really is a unique and fantastic game. He recently purchased the new version for the switch which is also fun.

Thank you not only for this video but your use of games to explain the symptoms of asbergers. I have long suspected I may be on the spectrum but admit, and I’m opening myself up for criticism here, I am scared to get diagnosed because I’m afraid if I do have it, I may be told I can’t work or told I’m “disabled” when I don’t see myself that way. And, If I’m not…then that means something else is wrong. I know no one really cares about this, but I want to thank you for sharing this because it brings me a lot of comfort in a strange way.

You know many people self diagnose. I was diagnosed professionally by a psychiatrist and psychologist and at first it was a big surprise but after researching more I completely agree with it. You should buy a book called a complete guide to aspergers by Tony Atwood who’s pretty much the global authority expert on aspergers and after reading it you’ll pretty much know for sure if you didn’t want to go down the diagnosis route. The actual assessment has some weird tests though which are quite funny.

It's difficult to think of games which would be suitable for those with Aspergers syndrome or other conditions that would put them on the spectrum. I do love a good, quiet, at-your-own-pace puzzle game though, like The Witness or The Talos Principle. Obviously, they aren't N64 games though. Maybe Tetrisphere?
I haven't been formally diagnosed with anything from the spectrum so maybe it isn't my place to comment, but my hydrocephalus definitely causes some similar traits in myself like following a routine and keeping things in order. Routines are helpful with memory loss.

I think accessibility has been getting better with a lot of more recent games. Good examples being Last of Us II and upcoming Ratchet and Clank as options for text sizing, color blindness, color contrast, narration and more. While my eyesight thankfully is great, it’s nice to have the option to change text size for example based on what works best for me.
I think companies are looking more into accessibility now than ever and with Microsoft even going as far to develop the accessibility controller for the Xbox One, mind you a product they made no profit on, as a means to break down those barriers.
It’s awesome to see more of these barriers coming down as when everyone can play and access these games, we all win.

There are some clear signs and I see it more and more obvious at key times. To be honest we wanted her to have a chance at a normal life so we didn't want the school to know but now that they've taken her away from us that's far worse than her being in special education and something I never seen coming, our daughters were a huge part of our life especially since they're both still so young. This was a really interesting list. I have mostly speculated on accessibility in regards to understandable premises or gameplay mechanics or level of difficulty that was not way too easy or too hard [probably on an insulting level]. But then there's controllers and if the layout and design is good for disabled people. Then there's colour, text size and so on as options in recent games such as Last of Us 2.
But this video touches on how the games work for those on the spectrum, and it was informative and even touching, considering I'm not really on the spectrum myself. I've played both Pokemon Snap games quite a bit, and even just resorted to basic escapism with games such as Harvest Moon on SNES and Breath of the Wild, purely because life was difficult for me at the time.

    Damage dealt: 90,000
    Ammo Used: 460,000
    Distance Travelled: 9000km

Sure it can be a pain sometimes, but me personally, I found my special interest to be in technology and I absolutely love robots, mecha and the aesthetic that comes with it. This overlooked gem (I blame the tutorials) has you exploring an island to find as many hidden treasures as you can, and I absolutely loved collecting everything in this game that I can. I wish that Capcom would release another mega man (or Rockman) game in this style, but apparently they think nobody has any interest in it, but the Mega Man Legends (Rockman DASH) series is so criminally overlooked.

Hi Glenn. Long time subscriber, love your videos. I was formally diagnosed with Asperger's 18 years ago (when I was 14) and have received regular support since. I've also been writing and drawing an auto-biographical comic as a means of catharsis, self-exploration, and raising awareness.
I was nervous going in for many of the reasons you talk about. People tend to stereotype or make sweeping generalisations, so thanks for acknowledging it presents different challenges for different people. If this were uploaded by anyone else, I'd be concerned about it being exploitative or click-bait. Thankfully, that's not something I have to worry about with your general integrity.
You mention you prefer to use the term Asperger's despite it being replaced with high-functioning autism. You might be happy to hear that my understanding is it's the other way around and that we no longer classify types of autism as low-functioning or high-functioning. Funnily enough, for the exact reason you discuss, high-functioning implies the existence of low-functioning, which can be offensive to other forms of autism. It can also imply people with Asperger's are "okay" or don't need help and support because they're "high-functioning".
I did flinch at "I can name a few people who I think are definitely on the spectrum, but maybe haven't been officially diagnosed." It is assumptive, and self-dioagnosis is a huge problem at the moment. One is, when we're asking for help or telling our story, we get shut down by "Oh, I think my boy might be a bit autistic." and people self-diagnosing or frivolously claiming to be autistic in complaints etc can make it harder for companies to take our genuine requests for reasonable adjustments seriously.
Ironically, I am an artist and I do have a long running career as a Senior Instructional Designer. Possibly a separate topic, but there seems to be this assumption that art is an innate talent, you can either draw or you can't when in truth, it's a skill that has to be regularly practiced and earned. Naming it a talent can discourage potential new artists from ever picking up a pencil, while disregarding the years of study and dedication put in by existing artists.
Most of the game recommendations are spot on though. The video was definitely relatable and it clearly came from a place of good intentions.
    Some recommends from other platforms:
Guitar Hero - despite the reflex and motor issues you mentioned, we tend to excel at pattern recognition and memorisation. I learned the note patterns and found that repeated play improved both my hand-eye co-ordination and reaction times.
Tomb Raider (PS1) - the game's movement is based on an easy to understand grid system (albeit you're not told that, it's fairly obvious from the level geometry and how Lara moves). It's puzzle heavy, combat light. There's usually only music during set moments. Most times, you're left alone in these abandoned and beautiful environments to think through the next few steps.
Persona 5 - JRPGs are a good fit anyway, stat management, turn based combat, finding, remembering, and exploiting enemy weaknesses, all good stuff. Persona adds in the social links outside of combat and gives in-combat bonuses for engaging with the system. Multiple choice canned responses really take the load off and make it enjoyable.

Great recommendations. The whole self diagnosis thing is always a strange one for me, I’ve never come across a community where there’s so many who self diagnose who don’t go down the route of getting a medical diagnosis. I was fortunate that my assessment was covered through a private medical policy I have so I didn’t have to pay anything but in my opinion if you’re going to make life choices after self diagnosing then surely you have enough concerns to warrant getting a proper test to ensure you haven’t misdiagnosed yourself. That’s one of the reasons that I tend to avoid any aspie communities as from what I’ve seen there’s too many self diagnosed people who want others to almost validate their thoughts which can be a dangerous thing. Each to their own but I’m also lucky that I don’t have many of the most challenging symptoms and have lived a successful life and so the problems others have don’t really impact me on a day to day basis.

    • @WebstersYouTube
      @WebstersYouTube 3 года назад +1

@@n64glennplant 100% with you on the communities. I tend to find it's either self diagnosed people looking for validation, as you said, or people who were diagnosed at very young and impressionable ages who believe they can't achieve anything due to their autism because that's what every authority figure and trusted adult has told them their entire lives. When you're 3 or 4 years old, rules based anyway, and your parents, teachers, and supports are saying "You can't do this, this, or this." you tend to believe it. Heck, when I got diagnosed I was told I wouldn't be able to live independently, hold down a job, or maintain a romantic relationship. Thankfully, I was 14 and didn't take that at face value. Now I'm 32, married, with two kids, a successful career, and a mortgage.

I have been diagnosed with Aspergers. Aspergers taste is so large and sweeping, I’m not sure it’s possible to really create a list of those for those with Aspergers. It’s almost as sweeping as creating a list of games for the general population. I personally only like Harvest Moon 64 from this list, and is not a favorite. I also like it mostly for the the character interactions and romance, and the more regimented aspects of the game are what keeps it from being one of my favorites. My favs for the N64 would be Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, and Mystical Ninja Starring Geomon. And that is not to say that those games are any more appealing to those with Aspergers, they aren’t, because there really aren’t any games that appeal specifically to people with Aspergers because we have a wide a range of taste near as wide as the general population.

@@n64glennplant Every commentator on RUclips who counters the use of autism as a strawman excuse, has problems of their own. That's why you can't call someone out for it while making yourself the better person, because you eventually reveal yourself to be a hypocrite if you have autism too. This has nothing to do with you or this video, by the way. It's just something I wanted to get off my chest, because I've kept seeing this a number of times in the past and not enough people have brought it up as a legitimate issue.

If an Autistic person loves Pokémon for the battles (which involve strategy and semi complex math to calculate what will hit well enough), then I’d recommend Pokémon Stadium. Both 1 and 2 are equal in their own ways and take about the same amount of time to complete. The world record is 20 hours. I’m Autistic myself, and prototypes are ESPECIALLY my favorite. In fact, Die Hard 64 might be my favorite unreleased game because the 1st person perspective on something that was never completed makes for a fun curiosity. It adds even more of a mysterious atmosphere because of the 1st person perspective. In fact the builds the dev released was around the same time as it being cancelled, so there most likely won’t be later builds, sadly. I hope we have more N64 prototypes. There’s been a lot more released recently. Non master quest OOT debug, Debug Rocket RoW, Bass Mastee fishing 2000, Debug Duck Dodgers, Early Aiden Chronicles protos, Early TWINE, E3 99 40 winks, Dinosaur Planet right before the cancellation, Cubivore N64, Freak Boy, Viewpoint 2064, multiple tony hawk protos, early glover 1 proto (which was released by Piko themselves due to a misunderstanding with another new glover proto), redumped glover 2, and not only a release candidate from 3 days before final, but THE SECOND HALF OF SPACEWORLD 97 OCARINA OF TIME from a final F zero X cartridge. There’s more, but the rest is not that significant or has bad dumps.

I would also recommended certain games like perfect dark and golden eye, pokemon puzzle league, and blast crops. Possibly even forsaken 64. High score or "completionist" gameplay resonates with me a lot. I really enjoy finding every single little collectible and finishing every objective.
Blast Crops is good for those who like to search and enjoy vehicles as you control many different types all the time.
The n64 fps games are fun for speed running which I enjoy.
Forsaken 64 has full freedom of movement like the PC game descent.
Movement based games are great too, though I don't have a particular example.

  • @TBoneTony

I have a mild form of Aspergers.
So I have no problems with the stereotypes as they are mostly ground down to the basic traits of autism and it helps people to understand some of those traits instead of being confused all the time with someone who is not quite normal compared to everyone else.
It comes from trying to understand someone without thinking of the worst possible opinion of them and I get that allot from people who think I am not able to do something normal when I just do it in a different way of thinking.
When it comes to JRPGs, we were left lacking on the N64 but I am happy enough to got a fair few games that I enjoyed on the N64.

Interesting, myself being autistic (that you refer to Asperger /high functioning autism) played quite different games as a teen. I had this completionism necessity to finish my games at 100% that I applied to my favourites games such as Zelda, F zero, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Excite Bike, New Beatle Adventure Racing, Wrestling games made by Aki/Asmik Ace, 1080 Snowboarding, Harvest Moon, Jet Force Gemini, Mario Golf.
My impatience and total fear of not making the right choice made me go to the library on the internet to download game guides from GameFAQ. Then I would come back home, format these guides to my taste then print them (a process that could take several as hours).
At the time, I was a real encyclopedia on games (even on the consoles I did not had such as the PS1) and every kid in the little city I lived in came to me for advices and help. (I was the one who leaked the Golden Eye password revealed by Rareware long after the game release)
Sometime, I would go to this kid place just to watch him play RPG for the whole afternoon or evening just because it was soothing. He did not mind and now thinking of that, he was probably autistic as well.
My best friend and I survived these years because of videogames.I stopped playing in college as my obsession got into my studies, but my interest on the topic made me continue to be up to date even if I don’t play as mush as I used to.
