I’ve been going back to Starcraft 64 every few years since it came out in 2000, when my mom ended up buying it off the local rental store for me. Playing through the Zerg Troopers scenario splitscreen with a friend is still the ultimate test of friendship. The last minute where the screen fills with ultralisks and the frame rate dips into the single digits is truly a trial that will forge a strong bond between any two people who can overcome it, haha.
Very surprised to discover how well they were able to make Starcraft play with an N64 controller. I actually kind of love it. Obviously I can’t “micro” as well as I can on PC, but that’s fine because I’m not playing competitively online. Atrocious frame rate dips aside, it’s been a very enjoyable way to casually revisit the campaign missions. Would have been even better if they included some of the popular community-made UMS games from the time on the cartridge.
@@n64glennplant I don’t agree because just the mouse alone wouldn’t be enough. Without a keyboard for command hotkeys, we’d be stuck having to constantly click every command from the onscreen menus. It would actually end up being a slower APM than using the controller with the innovative way they coded the commands into the C stick. This is especially important when the frame rate dips to single digits and the cursor drags along super slowly. We’d need an N64 keyboard to accompany the mouse lol.
indeed, I'm picking a select few titles as R6 will come in a future episode so trying not to select some games intentionally to avoid the videos having too many of the same games
Wetrix is definitely worth checking out. It's got a little learning curve, but once you get the satisfaction of multiple ducks and rainbow multipliers it can be a great experience.
Love Ogre Battle. Took forever for me to beat though because I kept trying to level up my characters. I actually thought hybrid heaven was a fairly intellectual game also, aside from some flaws in the system. The fact that you could use an expansion pack to play split screen Starcraft was tight back then.
I am definitely no good at fast reflexes and die all of the time games, like the independent studios were obsessed about a few years ago. I used to play a lot of Civilization on PC and I have been getting the itch to play strategy games again so I think I will give Starcraft 64 a try!
I have my og copy still from when it came out, the cartridge has all the cheats unlocked too so it's still fun to go and play and you can just jumpstart in if you want. I think the cheats help the enemy as well so you can only really use it as a jumpstart
Fun fact. It's technically impossible to beat Lode Runner 3-D on console (I tested on two different US cartridges.) Upon reaching the final warp on the final level, the N64 crashes and has to be hard reset. Saving also crashes the game, but only during the later levels for some weird reason. I wish there was a solution because it's such a great game otherwise.
Of all Nintendo's homegrown action puzzlers, I find Dr. Mario is the most overrated. Most of the challenge is just waiting for the right corresponding drug for the viruses rather than setting up your own advantageous combos with clever planning. Panel de Pon (here as Pokémon Puzzle League) is easily their best, certainly being more fast and frantic of the two. If Wario's Woods and Yoshi Cookie had any presence on the N64, I'd opt for them too in lieu of Dr. Mario.
Big fan of your channel Glenn, glad to see you back making new content. Ever considered starting a side channel reviewing GameCube games? Would love to see it
If you think about it Starcraft 64 should be the most expensive game on the n64. It is a RTS game, one of the best, Starcraft, on a console that runs on 10 watts?, with 2 player split screen multiplayer? We won't get anything like this for the rest of human history. lol. A generic fighter like clay scuptor on the n64 and the rest of the n64 library, a dime a dozen on other consoles and future consoles.. A game like Starcraft 64 will never be attempted again by any game developer. It was a product of its time. I am glad I snatched a copy before people actually realize how valuable this game really is.
I’d probably say, Heroes of might and magic 3, played that with a friend. SMALLEST map possible. It was over within a ingame two weeks. With new units being purchasable after a week. You pick your hero, to take the units out to explore, and your town is undefended. On a small map. You then have a weird mental challenge that I certainly struggled with, How far away is my hero now from my town? Because it’s like a turn based RPG board game. On small maps you can’t feel comfort. Larger maps you take comfort in the fact your opposition will be occupied elsewhere to build massive armies... It really is a good game. It’s just one I can’t play - well enough lol The other ones I can think of unpopular I think in decision for mentioning. (Flash games) Building rush - because I am tainted by the fact I get bronze/silver. And the level is a few minutes tops. How the hell can I fail to get gold, you finally get into it then it ends. It’s annoying as hell but like a guilty pleasure of mine. Airport madness - not a ‘great great’ game. It is simply, planes coming into the airport. Don’t have them crash, you can tell them what to do, like go to another run way, but you can’t front rim them. Then you have the ones on the ground trying to get out, so you finally get it down to a rhythm, the game throws the same level at you - but at night. Anyone who says that’s cheap! I’d say, think about it, you can see everything during the day, now you have just the lights flashing to tell where they are! It’s brilliant! It’s simple, and gave me an actual perspective, How many systems are there for this plane? The people you just let board, then sit idle at the run way, cos you were letting 5 planes in. (Why?!) - biggest guilty pleasure. I friggin love it, I love the characters, I love the music, I love the graphics, I just wish it wasn’t a guilty pleasure lol Insaniquarium! (Oh boy...) feed fish, aliens come to eat your fish. It’s a click-a-thon. Complete a level, you get a pet. This pet will do ‘one action’ for you, like, fight the aliens, feed the fish, provide income. To make your life a tiny bit easier. Or potentially ALOT harder. I have completed it more times than I care to admit. Or remember, I wish there was another one or an expansion, except how many different ways can you have the pets and aliens attack differently, behave differently? A design philosophy is, you have say, good vs evil. For good you have angels, for bad you have demons. Within insaniquariums case, your limited to three pets, and your choice is between (in the same class) A ouster that gives a perl every so often. For a couple hundred A undead fish that drops gold coins as regular as the fish do, A clockwork fish that drops bombs. Will kill a fish if hit (any fish) but gives a lot more money for collecting the bomb. Or an electric eel. - that will kill ALL your fish (excluding larger ones, and if you have no fish left they give you a guppy for free) - but for every fish killed regardless of level or size, you get 200 coins in the form of a diamond. Oh, and they have time trial mode. Which is 5-10 minutes, how much money can you finish on. *clears throat* I played a lot of the game. (Also 4 quid on steam!?... bought it on sale cos I couldn’t find my disc... it’s not worth 4 quid. I might have got a lot of entertainment out of this, but it’s not worth 4 quid.)
