Glenn, You must be playing the US version of this game if you're hearing Dana Gould, he was replaced with Danny John-Jules in the UK version, (he was also replaced with Leslie Philips in the previous Gex Game) on account of people saying how annoying his voice was.

Gex: Enter the Gecko is one of my all time favorite games. I got it used at EB Games and my brother got Croc: Legends of the Gobos.
I remember being enthralled with the craziness and absurdity of it. I also loved reptiles at the time (having pet frogs and turtles).
Gex is a product of the 90s and I don't think the younger generation would appreciate him as much as we did. But it would be cool to see Gex save the internet!..but that didn't go so well for Wreck-It Ralph...

I never played this one, though did play the previous game (on both PS1 and N64) and quite liked it, flaws and all. This game doesn't look that much of an upgrade on Enter the Gecko on the surface, it has to be said.
If Gex ever does get revived (in an age when Bubsy and Shaq Fu get new games, anything is possible!) I'd much prefer a 3D game, purely because there are about half a billion throwback 2D platformers out there nowadays whereas there are barely any 3D platformers.

My favorite of the series is probably the second one. I really enjoyed some of the levels in the third. But I seem to remember more of the same game than any of them oh, so it must have made a stronger impression.
If I were to revive the gex franchise today, I would have a mixture of 3D platforming levels and 2D side-scrolling levels but all with 3D images and shapes and environments, so it would be 2.5d on the side-scrolling stages. I would use his TV addiction to play into today's streaming and binge-watching culture.

Here I am missing Gex like.....but I have Spyro reignited trilogy, Crash Bandicoot n sane trilogy, and Red Dead Redemption 2. But honestly Gex was one of my favorite ps1 characters. The characters I remember the most are Spyro, Gex, Crash, Rayman, Croc, Tomba(guy with pink hair). Croc used to be my fav as a kid until Spyro. Spyro is still my favorite, I’m so glad he made a comeback. I know all these ps1 characters that I love can’t comeback but if I had to pick who I’d want to comeback out of these characters is Gex. I understand Gex is to 90s with his jokes, but in modern days like today, I do think he can say modern day jokes and thinking about the channel themes I have thought about. For example channels could have themes based on the media in the late 00s-2010s. Twilight saga, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead franchise, Supernatural, Fast and furious franchise, and etc. just a few that I thought of at the top of my head. His is just my opinion. But yea, I miss Gex, especially when Spyro and Crash came back and had a remake ):

  • @Specter053
    @Specter053 5 лет назад +6

Honestly, I don't really think Gex did the port transition very well... I lived with the N64 ports and they were kind of janky, with problematic camera and frame rates. On the other hand, when I played them again on the PS1, they got significantly better, with fewer slowdown problems. But on the other hand, Mythology Network is clearly superior on the N64, with the PS1 version being a hot mess of bottomless pits and despawning collectables.
I find Gex 3 as the best of the series. Not because it repairs the 2nd game's problems, but because they got around it by designing more open levels, where the camera doesn't get as stuck as before. While it has problems, especially on stages like Tut TV and Clueless in Seattle, it does the job enough to not make it a chore, at least for me. Coupled that with some pretty memorable levels (Anime Channel, Mafia TV, Superhero Show and Buccaneer's Broadcast) and the overall decent controls, I consider the Gex series to be the better one of the B graded platformers of the era.
As for how to revive it, with the recent revival of 3D plaftormers with things like Yooka-Laylee, A Hat in Time and Mario Odyssey, I think Gex could return as a 3D platformer. Make the levels thematic with popular TV and movie tropes of nowadays (a huge city as a battleground in a Superhero level, a Medieval level with dragons and spells a la Game of Thrones, sunny and moving cities as a Investigation/Police show and a Sci-Fi channel based more on Star Trek or the more recent Star Wars movies, just as some examples), bring a few levels from the other games as "Rerun Stages" (imagine Mafia TV or one of the Horror levels from 2 with nowadays technology) and add a focus on the unique moves Gex can perform (especially the Tail Bounce, the Wall Climbing and the Flies) and we have a recipe for a pretty nice game.

I never bothered with Deep Cover Gecko- anytime I saw it at Blockbuster I just thought it looked like a gimmick. Sure, Enter the Gecko had themed worlds similar to DCG, but seeing screenshots of 'vampire Gex' and 'little red riding hood gex' just turned me off. N64 Glenn Plant I'd probably say the Gex 2: Enter the Gecko/Gex 64 was my favorite of the Gex games, mostly because I liked its level design over Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko's just a bit. That said, I didn't beat Gex 2: Enter the Gecko until 2017 when I got the PS1 version, although I did get very far with the N64 version roughly two decades ago (although I couldn't beat Rez). Ironically I did beat Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko two decades ago (I owned the PS1 copy and played it on my PS2, and was for two decades, the only PS1 game I ever completed).
Overall, I'd say Gex is a pretty good franchise, mostly his 3D games (not a big fan of most 2D platformers). I wish Square Enix would remaster his old games, or better yet, make Gex 4.

I mean I understood them in the sense that I knew what he was talking about, but they just seemed completely random, rather than being appropriate to the current situation. It'd be like a character just randomly saying "That's going to leave a mark!" for no apparent reason. It's funny when it's in relation to someone getting hit/hurt, but if you're just running along, or even standing still, it makes no sense.

I have played 2 and 3 on the N64. Never owned a console that had the first one unfortunately. Both had their charm, and 3 definitely has annoying voice over and camera, but I just liked the visuals. Crazy enough, even the level design a bit better. 2 felt like going from one spot to the next, it was fun with a little bit of puzzle solving. 3 felt like a wacky world that exploring every corner rewarded you while not being over saturated with collectibles, and I liked that.

How would I *want* to make a Gex revival game? Like the PS/N64 ones, but hopefully more polished.
How would I make a Gex revival game, if it needed to be successful? Pixel-art sidescroller, as that pretty much guarantees positive feedback. ;)
(I'd still go with the former!)
As for the humour, it's inevitable that some of it would become outdated, so I just wouldn't worry about it. Throw in a good mix of old and new movies/shows to parody, try to keep Gex's comments more or less on-topic, and hope that some of the humour holds up over time. And I imagine many of the people that can't stand '90s attitude will also hate '90s platform games (just speculation, though), so they're not the target audience!

I loved the Gex games. I personally liked the Red Dwarf actors voice work in this game though I did also like the other actor who did enter.. Sonic is a more wholesome, family-friendly dude in general, despite his '90s 'tude.
But I think the real issue is that Sonic games often take themselves quite seriously- if Sonic '06 had an overall goofy tone, and if it joked about the hedgehog/human "romance", then it may have been better received. Or at least mocked differently?

  • @Gecko1993HogheadIncOfficial

Truth be told, I find Gex 3 to be the weakest of the original trilogy. The major contributing factor is the complacency of gameplay style from Enter The Gecko. The PS1 version had some REALLY poorly designed levels-so much that the N64 version had some radically altered so that they are better. And the whole “Save The Damsel In Distress” trope is unfortunately what makes this game kind-of cringy for me. Don’t get me started on the game’s ending either (the PS1 version’s is not only TMI, but it puts Sonic 06 to shame but for wrong reasons) The N64 version’s ending fed me bullcrap lies “Mr. Gex and I will see you again soon” almost 20 years later STILL no game...
If a new Gex game was to be made, maybe make it not only TRULY open-world: I.e. have him climb almost ALL surfaces (except ice, Teflon, poisons, and maybe some kind of kryptonite-like substance), and probably focus on him as a character like when Austin Powers adapts into the 1990s from him being in the 1970s; but with a twist: Gex is irritated about the fact the 1990s were better apart from a world of SJW strawman propaganda, censorship of our world of entertainment, and his character ACTUALLY develops through the course of the game. One last thing would be to make Gex talk with the push of a button whenever the player wants him to (kinda like an action figure) I call it: the Select Quote Option (obvious nod to Geico is obvious).
One last thing about a potential new Gex Game is ACTUALLY HAVE a reason why he was gone for so long. Have him locked up in a looney bin for years (released for good behavior), gets run hit by a Freight Truck, becomes a shut in, gets drunk off Ice Cream (it worked for SpongeBob), and is divorced from Agent Xtra (because he only knows one position: Gecko Style). Those are my thoughts.

I don't get why people review the N64 version, the PS1 version is superior in every aspect like graphics, lag, sound and so on. The N64 version is literally a huge downgrade.
EDIT: There is also NOT a big input delay. At least not on the PS1 version. Might also be because of the insane lag on the N64 version.
