We had an N64 magazine here in Mexico back in the day. I wonder if what we got here was only a translation or people here had the freedom to add what they wanted. I remember I had a Magzine with Shadow Man on the cover, and they also spoke about Pokemon Snap I think. I like that magazine a lot, but I have none of them anymore. The N64/PS1 era is so fascinating to me. It was an era of huge experimentation, games were build around the main concept of being 3D, whereas 3d is just a "backdrop" for games now and considered normal and day-to-day.

The best N64 magazine was Australia's "N64 Gamer", which among other things had a one liner joke in which they superimposed a photo of a topless woman (model Elle MacPherson) onto a screenshot of Goldeneye. With this picture was the caption "Write in and we may give you the nude code." They allegedly received over 2000 requests.

One thing I remember being really surprised by as a child of 11 reading this magazine in its early days was that in one of the issues - I don't remember which, but around 11-12 - they mentioned that if the next issue didn't arrive on shelves by the due date, it was "bye bye Jonathan", or something to that effect. Each new issue was supposed to be available by a date which they had given in the previous issue, but in my experience, it often arrived with me later than that. I was surprised that they published a hint of what seemed to be internal discontent/office politics for the readers to see, and it made me wonder if there was some unhappy manager we weren't aware of who had given the editor an ultimatum. I was just surprised that it was actually mentioned in the magazine itself. Whether it was due to that or not, Jonathan ended up leaving and was replaced by... James, I think? In any case, I've always wanted to know what the story was behind all of that, and why Jonathan left.

Haha great comment on Quake 64. Since now Quake 64 is DLC for the new Quake Rerelease, we were looking at the levels. Levels like Ziggurat Vertigo are pretty much fully intact, but then there are levels which are cut and some which have reduced geometry. Since Ziggurat Vertigo was kept pretty much intact, we figured cut geometry and cut levels were to save space on the cartridge. Reduced multiplayer was likely to make a deadline (which happened with Doom 64 too).

I really disliked the cover flaps that they started doing, but N64 was definitely the best of the Nintendo magazines of the time. Even at the time, I often noticed how much padding they had to do to fill the magazine with content. They often had very little to work with in terms of games releases, so the few games they did have, they gave huge 8 - 10 page reviews for (with the infamous 2 part review for Ocarina of Time being a prime example of cheeky N64 magazine padding).
Still, hats off to the writers, they did a great job with what they had to work with.

Simplemente GRACIAS.
