1. Sahelanthropus is a shitty metal gear. It's not a stealthy nuke launcher at all. 2. Sahelanthropus doesn't work. The engineering is useless. It only worked because Psycho Mantis was moving it.
Iono man. Design wise, if you can make something smaller, lighter but equally as good (or better), that means less maintenance costs, better overall efficiency and etc. Maybe that's why those tanks from MGS3 and on forward were big AF. Technology was limited back then.

The TX-55 (that's the specific model) might have looked gross on purpose since the idea of a nuclear bomb shooting robot is supposed to be pretty bad in the first place.
If this game ever gets remade each boss is going to have around an hour long cutscene.
