Kibbe really saved me. I also would follow those rules about looking chic and I never looked or felt right. Once I understood my soft dramatic frame, so many things started to make sense and I began to realize that I needed to focus in fabric and line. Now I do not waste money on items that don’t work for me. The fruit and geometric systems only added to the chaos and waste. I appreciate your videos so much.

I was confused because I have no hourglass, so I thought I could be soft natural. In the end i was typed as pure romantic. And I’m happy about it. I think the old adage "you have to know the rules before you start breaking them" is in play here. You don't need to strictly adhere to the Kibbe system to look good or even your best, but it does give you a great starting point with lines that suit you (and lines that don't, lol).
It honestly helped me develop a sense of what I like vs what simply flatters me (it also saved me soooo much money on clothes 😂)

I'm a 170cm tall SN, wide arms, soft body, even when underweight. I also have muscular legs which wouldn't help my self- esteem throughout the years- they're just strong and everyone notices this fact. Even now, at a very healthy weight I look much fleshier than my peers who have way higher BMIs. When I was overcoming my body dysmorphia and eating disorders, my co-patients were literally pitiful of the body I'm stuck with. They said at least "my face was pretty". I was in tears.
If it wasn't for Kibbe and you, Aly, I would've never dared to wear flattering clothes. I'd been overpowered by the need to cover up as much of my body as I could and then, POOF, you showed me I didn't need to "fix" my body because it's already perfect. I've never been happier and more liberated. And I've never felt so self- confident. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Aly.

Thin legs are pretty as well but there's nothing wrong with thick or strong ones either!

I have a very similar story about a make up artist. She was not even an artist but a student in very prestigious French make up school. She asked me if she can try make up on me. The make up was invisible but my eyes became so gorgeous and bright blue that I have never thought that how my eyes can be. People in the room were staring at me because they couldn't understand what happened why I looked so different from a few minutes before. No visible make up just your own beauty being elevated.

Ah, I think I might know what she did! A friend of mine was a makeup artist for TV news anchors. She did my makeup once, it was light, almost invisible and made my eyes just pop right out.
She lined only the middle part of my upper lid right above my irises. She used an angled tight eye liner brush dipped in dark brown eyes shadow. After that she coated my upper lashes with a layer of brownish black mascara. That was it. So simple, easy and very effective!

A friend of mine is text book Soft Natural. She didn't know about Kibbe, but was really into boho style anyway (now she knows, of course xD). Some people will just catch which style fit them best, without ever understanding why. Another one, a textbook Gamine, was quite into Lolita.
I'm Romantic, I was a teenage in the 90s, I liked these frilly "medieval" tops so much, no wonder why. xD
That being said, Kibbe helped me to know which piece will fit me and which won't. And as a Romantic, 90% of the clothes in about any store will look awkward on me, so it saves me a lot of time and a lot of self worth issues.

This is very interesting! I’d like to add my 2 cents:
I was a tomboy growing up because I wanted to be independent and take care of myself (cargo pants, a tank top, hair in a ponytail, a cap, and boots lol).
As I was getting older, I started to look down on girls that dressed in red dresses and wore red lipstick, I though I was better than these romantic-looking girls so I dressed in very classic clothes: pencil skirts, dress shirts and blazers, hair in a tight bun, small earrings.
Years passed and my friend helped to get me into Kibbe. Lots of research and pondering followed, and I realised… that I was jealous of these girls. I wanted to look like this romantic Spanish dancer, in her nice white blouse, flowy red skirt, her hair in beautiful curls, smiling while dancing. I wanted to be like that and I was jealous because, for some reason, I told myself I can’t look like that. Lo and behold, a TR in denial!
The Kibbe makes so much sense ❤️ now I know why I’ve always looked so stocky even when I was exercising regularly, and was thin. These thick fabrics and tailored fits really killed me 😅 and don’t get me started on low-rise jeans.

Finding Kibbe was like a revelation to me. I'm a SC and most all of the clothing the fashion industry dumps on the market made me look stupid, fake, lost, strange, trying to hard, and what have you. And I so much wanted to feel nice and "me"in my clothes. It's so funy, because nowadays I search for "unfashionalble" clothing in stores I always turned my back on before I found my Kibbe ID.

When I watched your first video, I took detailed notes on each type. I became a little obsessed with it! It was very clear that I am a Soft Classic. It has been a tremendous help for me to clear out my closet of all of the stiff or too thin fabrics. And to get rid of most of my loud prints. I am getting better and recognizing the fit and proportions that work for me. The hair and jewelry had come more naturally to me, so it was fun to have that confirmed. Not everyone has the time, money or even wish to ”express yourself” with clothing style (maybe we express ourselves in music or cooking or something else), but we do want to look put together, polished. In that aspect the kibbe/bodytype bonestructure knowledge REALLY made a difference for me :)

Kibbe typing helped me immensely! I'm 5'8, with wider bones and an hourglass shape. I've always struggled to look at myself objectively, and the looks and clothes that I was drawn to were perfectly suited to more gamine types. I wished I could be shorter, bone thin, narrow, anything but what I was, so I could look my best in tinier clothes, and what I now know to be extreme yin. When I was 15, it was cool to have a pixie cut. All the cute petite girls I saw on tumblr did it, so I decided that would be the next life changing step in my style journey, so I did it too. It looked... just okay. Not terrible, but not good. I spent such a long time hating myself because I never looked good in the clothes or hair I liked. I genuinely thought I must simply be ugly, not even considering that it might actually be the clothes I was picking out. When I stumbled across Kibbe at age 20, even while not being able to determine my type, I suddenly began to understand why all the styles I tried looked so wrong on me. I've since determined that I fit into the FN category. It was confusing because while I have a thin, balanced hourglass shape, it's apparently not what Kibbe considered to be hourglass, so I mulled over SD vs FN for a long long while. I was able to find things that work beautifully on my from both types before realizing that FN works the most. It really is about the journey, more so than the perfect label.
From this journey, I learned to love my height and my athletic build, enabling me to work with my body rather than against it. With Kibbe, color theory, and youtubers like yourself, learning the rules and tailoring them to fit both my body and style have never been easier, and I thank you so much for that!

Aly, you're so right! I was always super interested in fashion, sewing & sketching my own ideas since I was a child. My advice for anyone who wants their own style is to keep a fashion journal, cut out pictures from magazines that inspire you & put it together on the pages in a way that you like, a moodboard, put pictures of yourself in amongst the fashion pictures to see how it looks. I used to order catalogs from different stores, j.crew, anthropologie, and get free fashion magazines from the library. Maybe go to a thriftstore or the mall, try on everything and anything that you like (without the pressure of purchasing) take pictures of yourself & play with new styles, create outfits. Take your trusted friend or your mom/ sister, ask for honest feedback. Go with your instincts but also keep an open mind and try things before you rule them out. It takes time but you have to get to know your body & your unique aesthetic. Don't compare yourself to anyone, don't copy pinterest or Instagram etc, learn to appreciate your own beauty & have fun being creative!

In my opinion the kibbe system really helps towards owning your lines. I am a DC and I ve always dressed myself in strict lines and deep colors. My mistake was that when I tried to dress more feminine I would add things in my look that really took away from me and made me look and feel kind of clownish. After learning about the kibbe system I go all the way with my strict and geometrical lines and I feel more feminine than ever.

Those low rise jeans were terrible! I’m a FN; I probably never had a pair that was really long enough. I did like the very long ‘tunic’ tops around that time. I could wear a super long top with a hip level belt and look good at least. But I already have a long torso, and those styles made it look longer. I am loving the high waisted trousers theses days! Never going back.

I specifically remember going to a dress shop with friends for my first formal dance, and trying on a short puffy dress that was popular at the time, and I looked like a swollen kids birthday party fairy. I ended up getting a long dress that looked great on me, but I always wondered why I looked so terrible in the dress all of my classmates looked great in. When I found your channel it all clicked, and I had a name for what I was; Soft Dramatic. Of course I looked puffy in the popular dress, because it was made with gamine body shapes in mind. After watching your videos, all of the clues were pointing towards being an FN. This cleared up so many things for me. Instead of being confused about trying to dress like a pear shape, I started noticing that my hips were actually just muscular and athletic and I discovered the broadness of my shoulders which I had never noticed before. I had body type blindness until Kibbe. I thought I was totally lean and "sporty", which I am to some extent. I was however blind to my yin - softness and roundness. Probably because I don't like frilly pink things which they dressed me in as a kid. When I realised I was Soft Natural and saw non-frilly examples of SNs wearing soft and even pink clothes, I copied them and now feel awesome. My Style is now relaxed fits in soft colours+a little sportwear+artsy accessoires.

i think that kibbe is so helpful not just because of the clothes and the styling, but rather because it celebrates each and every particular body type, including its essence. as a soft classic I would always feel bad when some trends just didn't fit me or felt awkward. now i feel so much better because i know it's all about embracing who i am and adding pieces that just work. so yeah, I definitely think is not a rule to know your body type but it sure does help! (sorry for the english, I'm Peruvian)

I'm here to agree with all the people who have benefited from the Kibbe system. Since I learned that I am FN, I get a lot of wear out of every purchase. Every new piece is a hit. That didn't use to be the case. When I was trying to copy celebrity styles that I liked, I would always go for SD or DC! It's very depressing actually, when you don't look good in the clothes you like on others, but you don't understand why...

Yes I am SN and tried so hard to find my style through trends and other avenues. I would just end up constantly buying clothes that I only wore once before realizing I hated it and went on to a new style that I would also end up hating. I never felt confident in my clothes and like Aly said, I never felt that I fit in them. Also, I felt I looked like an imposter trying to fit into a “cool girl” mold that everyone could see through. Granted, the SN typical style is not what I would have chosen for myself, but I can’t deny that I look and feel MUCH more comfortable and confident when I wear clothes that are recommended for SN. I now have a mostly “SN wardrobe” for lack of better term, but I do still have a handful of pieces that are probably not in my SN recommendations, but that I love and do still feel good in. I wear these items occasionally, but I notice I do wear my “SN clothes” about 85% of the time and everything looks and makes me feel great.

Hi Aly and friends 👋I have mostly been a silent viewer for a long time, but this felt like the right video to comment on. I am a SN. I wanted to tell you how much Kibbe system has helped me. Like many comments I see here, I went through so many style trial and errors to finally find what works for me. For me specifically, I really love streetwear looks (especially London streetwear, I was so inspired when I went there for a trip), but in all honestly most of those styles looks TERRIBLE on me. I went crazy for a few years buying endless packages of clothing and feeling like everything looked AWFUL on me or that I didn’t fit in them the way I was supposed to or that I was an imposter...like I was trying to look cool. I always felt I looked like I was trying too hard, and now that I know I am SN this makes complete sense. I would have never gotten a new outlook on myself and my body if it wasn’t for your videos, Aly. I have since converted most of my wardrobe to a “SN Wardrobe “ for lack of a better term, and I can not deny how comfortable and confident I now feel in my clothes! If I ever order online I know it will look good on me and it always does. If I am being truthful, the boho style I wear now doesn’t always feel like what I would prefer to wear (boho and London Streetwear could not be more opposite lol), but boho looks great on me and I do have many pieces that I love. I still have a few of my beloved London streetwear pieces though, particularly only select things I feel great in and feel I look good in (only a handful of items lol). All in all, I am very happy with my wardrobe now and actively think about being a SN whenever I make a clothes purchase! And I am also very happy with my body now and COMFORTABLE in my body...which is something I never thought I would say. It’s been such a relief to come to terms with what I look like and why I look that way. I look just the way I am meant to. ☺️ I wasted a lot of time trying to wear super structured and tailored pieces, very unusual silhouettes, and now I know why they never felt like “me”! I

I relate to this so much! I love sportswear and sharp suits, but I am a soft dramatic so now I understand why they always looked uncomfortable on me. Now, even with my running clothes I buy something with a softer, drapier fabric and it looks so much better. Have you seen Merriam Style’s video on body type versus style? I watched it and it was the first time I really grasped how our types aren’t the same as the styles we like, but how they can work together or against each other.

    • @travelandlaughs9281
      @travelandlaughs9281 2 года назад

@@sallyfrench007 oooh so I have seen a few videos from that channel but I don’t believe I have seen that exact one! I will have to watch it today! 🤗 Thank you for recommending it, because sometimes I do find it hard to know how to balance things that fit into a typical SN style with things that might not be the most true to my lines. I envy people I see on RUclips who look amazing in everything they wear (who knows how much trial and error it took for them, though! I’m sure there’s a lot we don’t see behind he camera lol.) How long ago did were you able to “type” yourself? Do you feel you’ve fully “got it” in terms of what makes you feel the best in your clothes now? For me, it’s been like six months since I figured out my “type”. I’m sure it’s always a learning process. I feel I have made a lot of progress, but like I said my biggest thing now is trying to balance out my newly found “boho” style with other pieces I love. Sometimes I feel boho style is too casual for me . 🥺 Though I do live in the South, so boho really works well for the heat we experience almost year round!

@@travelandlaughs9281 Aha, I found it, it’s called “Style vs Body Type vs Essence”. I like it because I t’s the first time I’d seen the difference between the three explained in a way I could understand.
I pretty much typed myself but got a paid typing to confirm, because I don’t think my face fits my type particularly, certainly not when you see the celebrity examples usually given for SD. I’d agree that it took about six months to really get it and I still bought a couple of things in that time that I can see were nearly right but not quite there! Compared to my wardrobe before still a big improvement though. I think my favourite thing about Kibbe is it’s about playing to your strengths rather than trying to mimic a different body type. You’re tall? Make the most of it. You’re curvy? Make the most of that too!

One of my biggest realisations was that crop-tops were basically made for a TR! It fits me like a regular shirt :) basically, clothes that were tailored for smaller builds can do wonders for you ❤️

And there is no advice on the net either. As if there was no solution. I was always small and with curves, but now I almost don't have a waist, my hips have shrunk a bit (this has highlighted my shoulders) and my belly has increased ... For example: If I wear skinny jeans I have nice legs, but my body looks disproportionately big. The ratio is better in straight pants, but my whole body looks big ... etc. It would be great if You could make a video with some tips for us postmenopausal women.

I don’t really dress 100% like my body type because the general style of it I don’t like. I’m a SD and I don’t like the femme fatale look. I like to look feminine but soft. I just try to focus on the general ideas of Kibbe.
    1. For example long coats look great on me and I love them. They emphasize my vertical line
    2. I used to buy clothes with small flowers and always looked off on me. Now I know bigger flower prints look way better.
    3. I should look more monochromatic and don’t mix and match different styles.
    4. General draping and not too heavy turtlenecks
    5. No lived in hair or too layered and thin ends. Better is full and one color or where you can’t see the highlighted strands one by one
    6. Light black tights with skirt 🥰
    7. Nothing oversized and heavy
    8. Pay attention to fabric
    9. Nothing too smoked out eyeshadow. Washes me out. Eyeliner is best
But I think color season was very important for me

Hi Aly. Yes very interesting and "eye-opening ". No one could have said this better than you. I think that in previous generations women didn't have a lot of fashion choices or colours to chose from. There was basically one type of style and everyone wore the same things. I think this starting changing in the 2010's. There were a lot of choices and many clothes and colours to choose from. Women chose to wear whatever they wished and it didn't matter if it looked good on them or not. I feel sorry for these young girls that dress very casually, sloppy and over-sized. I think that designers, manufactures, stores and probably most sales people don't care about how the clothing looks when worn. It's all about sales, marketing, money. Where I live in Canada everyone wears mostly black clothing. Black coats, pants, footwear, purses ect. And now women have everything in black that they don't need to buy anything else. Being a Spring black is not my best colour but there wasn't anything else that I could buy. My guess us that stores realized a drop in profits because finally now coats are being sold in more colours. Unfortunately these colours are light pastels and get very dirty quite quickly. I think most people and myself still tend to wear our black coats the most. As for trends it's a good idea to keep up to date, however, most trends do not look good on everyone. Again it's just a money grab. Great video and keep up the good work.

During lockdown something flicked where I started to see my image objectively and not just go for things that are 1) cheap 2) reminds me of an aesthetic I like. I still find it hard to not gravitate towards things that may not suit me as due to my location and me not remembering how different my body is too the average woman so I get drafted into buying something that may fit them more but Kibbe made it more comfortable for me to accept my look and see the good in it.

My late mother, who was firmly on board with the concept of color analysis (she was a Winter), introduced me early to the idea of wearing one's colors. We were talking to a lady who largely agreed with Carole Jackson's Color Me Beautiful but had set up her own thing. I was typed as an Autumn.
The few times I dressed trendy as a wee thing, I hated it. I would say much of my look throughout my tweens and teens was loosely inspired by the 1960s and 1970s. I looked like a rumpled little ragamuffin, but I didn't care. I didn't start trying out "groomed chic" until my late teens and early twenties. This looked all right, but something was still missing.
To cut a long story short, I got more into unusual colors, avant-garde looks, standout pieces. Via Grace Margaret Morton and Harriet T. McJimsey I learned that this impulse was the correct one. Initially when I was looking at Kibbe I thought I might fit with Flamboyant Gamine. Come to find out I'm a full-fledged Dramatic; the knack I have for pulling off elongated lines and styles should have been a tipoff. On top of all of this, circling back to color analysis, I am a Dark Autumn (or what Suzanne Caygill would have called a Bronze Autumn).
I don't know if I would have evolved my current style on my own, but I must say McJimsey and Kibbe both helped. Thank you so much for this video!
